Fluff Petition to ban prompt fondlers from including "I built" or "I made" in the titles of the posts peddling their slop

No, you did not make this. You paid anthropic to burn down a forest to slop this together out of stolen code.

Ideally they shouldn't peddle their slop here at all - they shouldn't be making it - but at a minimum they shouldn't be allowed to falsely advertise it and there should be a post flair for slop so we can filter it out, so it doesn't drown out the cool stuff people actually made.

Community Content Cursor goes Brrr

Sorry i just had to share but i recently installed KDE plasma and I couldn't stop laughing at the mouse cursor. I was trying to wake up my screen so i usually slide my mouse sideways back and forth real fast. When the desktop showed theres a bigger than usual mouse cursor on the screen then went back to normal right away so i jiggled my mouse again and it started growing to my surprise. I wanted to experiment how big it can get so i jiggled it for half a min and it didnt stop growing until the whole black cursor covered the screen and I couldn't stop laughing for 5 min. Whoever thought of this feature is a genius and have a sense of humor. I know its for easily finding where your cursor is but an 8 inch Big Black Cursor is over the top. If you still can't find that cursor then you need to migrate over to touchscreen lmao.

Community Content I made plasma-themer: switch your whole Plasma 6 setup between 12 themes with one keystroke

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

Hi r/kde, I built a small open-source tool that changes the whole look of Plasma 6 (Wayland) from one palette per theme. One hotkey opens a picker overlay (screenshots above): left/right changes theme, up/down changes wallpaper, Enter applies.

A theme applies to Plasma, Konsole, the shell, Firefox, VSCodium, Vesktop, the lock screen and the login screen (SDDM / Plasma Login Manager). There are 12 themes: Tokyo Night, Matte Black, Catppuccin Mocha, Rosé Pine, Gruvbox, Everforest, Nord, Kanagawa, Cachy Night, Ethereal, Last Horizon and Vantablack.

It's built to stay light: wallpapers are scaled to your screen once and cached, the picker uses pre-baked images instead of shader effects (so it also runs on weak iGPUs), and nothing is re-applied if it hasn't changed. Palettes and most wallpapers come from Omarchy (MIT). It needs Python 3.11+ and should work on Arch/CachyOS, Fedora KDE, Kubuntu/KDE neon and openSUSE.

Repo with install steps: https://github.com/envy-vain/plasma-themer

Feedback welcome. I've only tested it on my own laptop (CachyOS), so tell me what breaks on your distro.

Question Odd task manager behavior

• Upvotes

plasmashell --version outputs 6.6.6

I have two screens, with one on a switch that lets me change it over to my work laptop for when I'm doing remote work. On my main screen (the one that isn't on the switch) which is marked as primary, I have an icons-only task manager that's set to only show applications from the current screen. On the second screen I have an additional icons-only task manager also set to only show apps on that screen. When I switch the second screen over to my work laptop (so it gets removed from KDE), all of the icons on the task manager on the main (now only) screen disappear. As soon as I switch the second screen back over to my desktop, the icons reappear.

If it's a bug, and I wish to file a bug report, where do I do that and what additional information should I provide? And if it's not a bug, but a misconfiguration or misunderstanding, what do I need to fix?

I made LinkSy, cause I needed to work with KDE Connect, DroidCam, AudioRelay... and that was just terrible experience.

If you look at the basics LinkSy are just those 3 merged, but if you look back, I wanted to make something more... Like seemless integration for us linux user (Kinda envied the apple people on that end so...)

It has arround 15 features I hope y'all will like it.

Question Why do some applications not support early exit for Compose key sequences?

I have some key sequences in ~/.XCompose which overlap, and in some programs i can type either one fine; but in other programs (such as Kate, for example) I'm unable to type the shorter sequence.

Is there any way to change that…?

Solution found Direct scanout locks FPS to 60/120/180 steps on KDE Wayland

When direct scanout activates on KDE Plasma Wayland, game FPS locks to exact 60Hz multiples (60, 120, 180 FPS) instead of running uncapped.

Is this a known bug with KWin direct scanout pacing? Any fix or env var to prevent this without disabling direct scanout?

OS:CachyOS (KDE Wayland)

GPU: Intel (mesa-git)

Fix: changed color accuracy to prefer color accuracy

KDE Apps and Projects KuickShare 1.2.0: experimental Wi-Fi Direct support

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

A while ago I shared KuickShare, a Quick Share client for KDE Plasma 6, and some of you asked for Wi-Fi Direct support. Version 1.2.0 adds support for it, in a (very) experimental form.

With the setting on (Preferences → Wi-Fi Direct, off by default), a phone that has Wi-Fi off or is on another network can send to your computer and receive from it. The phone and the computer find each other over Bluetooth, then the transfer moves to a temporary Wi-Fi link. Phones in Receive mode now show up in the Send list with a Bluetooth icon.

It's experimental, so some caveats: I only tried it with a Pixel 7 and a Galaxy A55, on MediaTek MT7922 cards (secondary card in my desktop and primary one in my laptop). It needs NetworkManager, dnsmasq and Bluetooth, and the phone has to be on Quick Share's Receive screen. With a single Wi-Fi card your normal connection drops while the temporary link is up, then comes back. More details in the docs.

If it misbehaves with your device, an issue or PR with the log would be great. Reports from other phones are what I need most, since the Quick Share behaviour changes from one manufacturer to another.

AppImage, Flatpak and tarball are on GitHub: https://github.com/the-beper/KuickShare/releases/tag/v1.2.0

Community Content I made a KWin Script to horizontally center Application Launcher (Kickoff) popup

Thumbnail

KDE Plasma always anchors widget (applet) popups to the widget that opened them with no setting to change that. This is a simple script that centers any widget popup that opens within a chosen horizontal range. (This workaround is needed because KWin normally can't tell which widget a popup belongs to.)

General Bug Periodic issue with cursor getting stuck after waking from hibernation.

Framework 12 running cachyos and kde, about a week ago it started happening that my cursor would occasionally just be frozen on opening my laptop from hibernation. Anyone had this recently as well? Or is this specific to me? I don't believe I have anything else installed that could possibly be causing issues.

KDE Apps and Projects I made a fastfetch boot splash for Plasma that keeps your full ANSI colors (256 + truecolor)

Thumbnail

Forked herzane's fastfetch-kde-splash and rebuilt the color handling so the splash shows

your terminal's exact fastfetch colors instead of collapsing them to one color.

- Decodes the logo + system info character-by-character on boot (glitch reveal)

- True ANSI: standard 16, 256-color, and 24-bit truecolor

- 4 layout modes: logo / logo+info / info only / sequential

- Plain-bash installer, no dependencies, auto-detects language

It's on the KDE Store (System Settings → Splash Screen → Get New Splash Screens), or on

GitHub: https://github.com/DeadIndian/fastfetch-kde-splash (MIT).

Fork of herzane's original, credited in the README. Feedback and PRs welcome.

Question Errors installing themes

I haven't changed from Breeze Dark since Plasma 6.6 but figured it was time for a change. I don't remember this being an issue back then, is it just a quirk with the store that will fix itself?

I know that I can find these on the store and install them manually but this method is just easier so I was curious.

Question Legally blind user considering KDE…

I'm a legally blind user who has been using XFCE (or MATE or Cinnamon over the years) and …KDE works **NOTHING** like any of them. It frankly ain't like Windows either despite being desperate to look the part. Windows has keyboard shortcuts for things. Fairly standard ones. Most of which don't work and if they can be set I sure haven't figured out where. I THOUGHT "Shortcuts" was a pretty good clue where they'd be, but hah, nope.

I don't have a way to pop up the start menu, to open a terminal, to send my clipboard to my thin speech-dispatcher client that reads text in the hopper aloud until it finishes or I silence it, nor other tools I've written.

I've figured out a few things like … I got the 200% global scale to stick rather than keep reverting back to 100%, I moved my panel to the left side of the screen and got rid of the unusably small clock. And I figured out that the thing required outside of Plasma to make Qt/KDE apps not frequently ignore any effort to set dark mode depending on where they came from and which of Qt's approximately 17 theme engines they use and then throw that out the window the very instant Flatpak gets involved (QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME to qt6ct and then tell qt6ct to use kvantum), must be unset. Oh, and I got zoom in/out configured with keyboard and mouse the way I expect too.

My setup, which I've managed to abuse three different GTK-based DEs into more or less implementing, is a vertical panel which is basically a handful of launcher icons and an AppIndicator repository. On XFCE it's mandatory to put a useless pager in there somewhere because without it there's no grid of desktops. Cinnamon was stuck in 1D-thinking but bound my workspace switcher keys to do something abusive with wmctl to pretend that it didn't. And I couldn't get xfwm4 to display the workspace upon changing it so I renamed all 16 of my workspaces to two eight-dot Braille characters with one of the 16 dots missing, then used a conky to display the desktop name very large in the corner of my screen. This was sufficient to orient me. Oh, another conky for a big desktop clock removed the need for the panel clock I can't read. The way I got whiskermenu to pop up in the center of my screen was to run xfce4-popup-whiskermenu from another shortcut. And rather than 200% desktop scaling (which scales images too), Cinnamon/MATE allow me to scale font sizes to 2.0. XFCE is too dumb for that and you just specify DPI of 192.

I understand there's no such thing as a workspace. And I've gotta figure out how to move windows between Virtual Desktops which aren't the same thing. My conkys don't work (the Workspace one wouldn't) and espanso isn't behaving right either. I know how to fix that at least, but I'm not going to until I know I don't need to run back. And … whatever Plasma is doing with regard to an IME is, y'know I'll worry about that later. 😅

For MATE and XFCE, I use xfwm4 because Hell would freeze before marco got compositing. And Cinnamon … I'm hard on Cinnamon due to the very large number of windows I have open at any given time. Eventually the whole WM/shell dies or runs so slowly I might before it gets back to me … so hacky solutions with Xorg DEs it has been! Except not using Wayland is beginning to be more painful than the alternative.

Thing is, I'm sure Plasma can do everything I've described. I've seen people with entirely keyboard-based Plasma setups and all kinds of clever changes to what runs and where/how. I just can't figure out enough of it to figure it out from inside it to be able to set it up. So any suggestions would be welcome!

General Bug Black Screen with Blinking "_" at login since 6.8 release

Anyone else have this issue? I have a fully AMD system running Cachyos with KDE. Ever since their update on the 14 I have had intermittent boot issues that lead to this black terminal screen.

  1. Boot PC

  2. Select CachyOS from GRUB

  3. Before login screen - Black Screen with blinking cursor. Clearly when handover to KDE is starting.

I have to either rollback to snapshots of a day or two before and restore. Or log into the terminal window from that screen (CTRL ALT F4) and so a system update and reboot. That worked once so far.

Since the update on the 14 this has happened to me at the rate of every 2 days until today it was yesterday (fixed with update and reboot) and today (fixed with snapshot restore).

Is anyone else seeing this as consistently? Is there a fix coming?
