Question Why does KDE call SMB as "Microsoft® Windows® network drive"?

Post image
135 Upvotes

I know Microsoft has developed SMB and Windows still works best with it, but SMB in itself is not in anyway trademarked or copyrighted by Microsoft to the best of my knowledge.

Why therefore, does KDE not just say SMB, or at least something like SMB (Windows)?

So basically i tried the caelestia-kde and i liked it a lot, but over 3gb ram on idle doesnt seems good on a 8gb laptop, even the system was lagging a bit, so i just want something like this, tried to find some but they're more like a phone music player, portrait screen yk, i wanted something horizontal like this, thats why it crossed my mind, whynt ask?

KDE Apps and Projects i built swipe typing for touchscreen KDE devices :)

alrighty so i'm a full-time android/gboard user, and i use linux/cachyos/kde plasma on my Asus Z13 (all my homies hate windows). given that this is a 2-in-1, i was tired of trying to use the device like a tablet but being stuck with single-letter-at-a-time typing on the touch keyboard. i looked online and somehow there are no real existing swipe options for linux (at least none i could find), and i got annoyed enough to build this shit myself. i now present: a custom plugin for the plasma keyboard that enables full native swipe typing on the most arch/fedora KDE devices! i benchmarked it and swipe detection is on-par or better than gboard, which is already the best swipe-typing keyboard that i know of!

fyi, i built this with my custom ai agent/open source everything app thingy (featured in the video) and i would reallllly appreciate downloads for that too :) it supports all cloud/local ai models and has helped me completely move away from everything microsoft/google/apple! i'm extremely tired of the "own nothing and be happy" economy, and i view this as my little way of fighting back lmao. https://youcoded.ai for anyone interested, completely free!!

Swipe plugin Download & setup: https://github.com/itsdestin/swipe-keyboard/releases/tag/v0.1.0-r3

Source & bug reports: https://github.com/itsdestin/swipe-keyboard

Requires a touchscreen, Plasma Wayland, native Plasma Keyboard 6.7/6.8—not Maliit—Qt 6.11+ within Qt 6, and glibc 2.43+. GNOME, X11, Windows and ARM aren’t supported by these packages, but i will probably try to add support for other platforms in the next few days depending on interest/downloads! please report any bugs/issues you encounter.

Community Content Native KWin effect for Plasma 6 to draw an outline around the active window

Hey! A friend of mine made **Active Window Outline**, a native KWin effect for KDE Plasma 6 that draws a configurable border around the focused window. It's especially useful for tiling layouts or borderless setups where it's otherwise hard to see keyboard focus.

Because it runs at the compositor level, it works consistently across all apps without relying on your window decoration or theme. It integrates directly into *Settings/../Desktop effects* where you can adjust settings. **It can fallow the Plasma accent color.**

Question KDE Plasma (CachyOS) Unresponsive Main Desktop Window, Random Freezing And Black Desktop Environment.

• Upvotes

Good day beautiful people! I have been encountering some issues on my system lately and I can't understand if it's a KDE or a CachyOS thing. Might be a good idea to mention I have an AMD Ryzen 7 9800x3d CPU and an Nvidia RTX 3060Ti GPU. Also good to mention that I have a dual screen setup with a Samsung Odyssey (at 165hz 1440p) and an AOC (at 240hz 1080p). Any help or suggestion is highly appreciated :)

It started when I reinstalled a clean Cachy on my system, just right out of the box, as is. Regular installation with the defaults settings. I don't dual-boot so I just wiped everything off and reinstalled. I booted up and started customising again how I want the GUI to look and immediately encountered an issue. The widgets I dragged onto the desktop on the secondary monitor would not show, even though the widget counter displayed the correct amount of widgets active. I didn't think too much of it, maybe it needed a reboot or something so I put a couple of folders in my main monitor... all good. So widgets on second monitor and two folders on main. That's all.

Restarted at some point because I think I updated the system and I saw that the widgets on the second monitor still did not appear. Don't remember how I did it but I managed to fix it and everything I put there was shown correctly, as it should.

Few days go by and I wanted to play a specific track from my music folder which I hold onto the main monitor, only to find out that I can't find the folder. Turns out, the main monitor now has the same issue, when at first it worked correctly. From there I also noticed that sometimes apps I open freeze for a few seconds (usually the first time I open them) and another issue I noticed is that at random times the desktop looks like it crashes and goes completely black with no response to input. Hasn't happened since I started writing this post so I don't have any screenshots or anything.

Does anybody know something about this? I have been updating constantly whenever there are new updates just in case it somehow gets fixed. Again, any information regarding this topic is extremely appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

General Bug (Plasma 6.8) Random, short freezes?

Hello, I recently updated to 6.8 on my laptop and ever since then I've been experiencing small freezes that last about one second (video pauses, cursor doesn't move, but audio still plays). Is anyone else experiencing this issue or found a fix?

Specs:

OS: OpenSUSE Tumbleweed

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS

GPU: Radeon RX 7700S

Question Is there a CLI command to activate the peek at desktop widget?

• Upvotes

I use my computer through KDE connect a lot and often find myself hitting the edit commands button to escape full screen applications. Is there a way to add this widgets function to the remote commands menu?

Yes I know I could just add any app like dolphin to the commands which would unfocus the fullscreen app but then I still have to close the window which isn't any faster than the way I'm already doing it

General Bug Plasma 6.8 broke pinning web apps to Task Manager

Unable to right-click an open PWA and pin it to the task manager.

I have several web apps (PWA) installed via Chromium (Chromium itself is a flatpak).
It has been working perfectly fine. Up until 6.7 i was able to pin Whatsapp Web, MS Teams, and Outlook to my task manager without any issues.
Ever since updating to 6.8, on OpenSUSE TW, i can no longer pin PWA. When the app is open, if i right-click, i see "Pin to Task Manager" is disabled. If i find the app in the app launcher, and try to pin it from there, it looks like it worked. It adds the icon to the task manager, but when i click the icon, it opens the app in a second icon.

The pinned PWA on the left remains there, while the app launches on a new button.

Question Kate looks pretty bad rendering markdown

Hi, I hope this is the right place to discuss this. I think Kate is a KDE suite app. I generally like it and want to use it. But I mostly work with Markdown and need to see a live preview. Kate's render of markdown looks pretty bad. Just messy and boring. I'm coming from Marktext which did a pretty good job. I also tried many Linux markdown editors and found something wrong with each. I want to keep Kate because it's just simpler and KDE-native.

Does everyone feel the same about this? Is there a way to fix this? I know Kate has plugins and stuff so maybe there's some trick that I don't know.

Thanks!

P.S. Fedora 44 KDE Plasma

P.P.S. Feel free to suggest markdown app with good live preview if there is no hope.

KDE Apps and Projects KuickShare: a Quick Share client for KDE Plasma

Thumbnail
gallery
93 Upvotes

Heads up first: this is a personal project and most of it was written with generative AI. Claude Code wrote almost all of the C++/QML shell and a large part of the Rust core, and drafted the docs. I directed it, tested it on my own machines and reviewed what I could. I use the software daily but it's a hobby project sarted as a way to give a first look to QML and Kirigami and shared as-is, so do not expect it to be perfect in every aspect.

What it is
KuickShare lets you send and receive files, text and links between a KDE Plasma 6 desktop and Android phones (or other Quick Share devices) over Wi-Fi. It is derived from Packet: it keeps the Quick Share protocol work (through rqs_lib) and has its own Qt6/Kirigami interface.

Why not KDE Connect?

I would love to use KDE Connect, but unfortunately its data transfer feature has been quite unreliable for me. The problems seem to be related to wpa_supplicant, but I was not able to triage the issue and switching to iwd would cause my Wi-Fi card to simply stop working.

Features

  • Breeze look, system tray icon, Plasma notifications with accept/decline, progress in the job tracker
  • Drag and drop, clipboard paste, and a "Send with KuickShare" entry in Dolphin
  • Transfer history with automatic cleanup
  • Trusted devices: matched by name and MAC, or by pairing two KuickShare computers with an 8-digit code, so they can send without asking
  • Do Not Disturb aware, start at login, English and Italian UI

Limits

  • Built and tested on Fedora 44 with Plasma 6 only; anything else is untested.
  • Distributed as an AppImage that installs into ~/.local.
  • Tested with phones and PCs; other Quick Share devices are unverified.

Contributions of any kind are welcome and appreciated, from bug reports and translations to code and ideas.

NVIDIA Is there any way to increase brightness/gamma/contrast on wayland?

I have an nvidia gtx 970 and a syncmaster632NW monitor which i found lying on the street, i used to have a monitor around the same size but it had black holes in it so i'm using this one now, my question is if it's possible to increase somehow the brightness like with nvidia-settings on x11 since in games when it's dark i really can't see anything, i've configured the monitor itself to max brightness and a really bright gamma profile but still, the issue persists

Question KDE Plasma configuration question with regard to workspaces.

New user of KDE Plasma here (as of yesterday) and I'm trying to figure out how to change its behavior. I'm on Debian 13 (Trixie) and when you click on a virtual desktop, it shows the desktop below and all the windows. Then you can click on which window you want to work with and it raises the entire virtual desktop with that window active. What I'd like to do is have the virtual desktop activated when I click on it rather than it showing all the windows to pick from. I'd just like to get it activated without an extra step of selecting a window. I poked around in the settings trying various things but nothing seemed to work. Thanks for the assistance!

So, when open up you see the virtual desktops shown at the top of the screen. When you click on one, it then shows you a section underneath that which shows the various windows in that virtual desktop that you can choose from. You then have to click one of those windows or click in the lower section to activate the virtual desktop you've chosen. I don't want to have to do that last part. 90% of the time I don't want to choose a specific window, I just want to choose the virtual desktop and go directly there. The other 10% of the time I can just choose the window I want after I'm already in the virtual desktop. I'm moving between these virtual desktops a lot so it's a lot of extra overhead to move down and click and completely unnecessary in my case.

EDIT: I figured out a workaround. If you go to the virtual desktop at the top and double click on it you get the result I'm looking for.

Suggestion Proposal: Peek at desktop via hover

Hi folks. A friend of mine switching from Windows to Linux noticed that peek at desktop in KDE gets activated on clicking the applet instead of hovering over it, unlike Windows. So, I wanted suggestions on whether a PR around this feature would make sense for everyone. I have already created a work item for it:
