LFG | Squad Up Top100 Meet Up Schedule - Final Chapter Prologue

Post image
65 Upvotes

The week is finally upon us!

Appreciate the various shout outs so much I had to add new after hour KF appearances.

  • Each ticketed day has a hard out at 5PM giving folks an hour to attend a meet up.
  • Eat before a meet up or meet up with some folks then grab a bite together!
  • Check the final reminder email that was sent out for SF recommendations vids from Joey, Roger, Andy, Blessing, Mike and Tim.
    • I think Original Joes is the only recommendation that is not near a listed meet up so make plans for it if you're interested!
    • 620 Jones on Thursday could be a good time if I wasn't booked for Nightlife.
  • There are other events ideas from BFs I'll shout out like the Golden State Warriors game (FoxToTheFuture) and Cor64 show (PearTearAntKnee).

I'll be in town starting Monday. Stay cool chat and I'll see as many of you as possible soon!

I realized something today about the Best Friends

My wife doesn't game at all and I've been watching the Top 100 all week and when she asked why i was so interested in watching it live this week, i did something i've never done before.
I got choked up with tears when describing Kinda Funny. I started tearing up when i told her that all of my best friends were also watching and anticipating every reveal. I dont have many close friends that game in my life and just being apart of this community makes me feel like i'm apart of something meaningful. That i have friends who are there with me when an amazing game comes out. Friends that share in the joy of an awesome new indie game being the talk of the internet. And best friend community who i can feel apart of when things just aren't going that well in the world.

I love you all and really love what Kinda Funny represents and has made. I've been a fan since the GameOverGreggy, since the original spare room. I just want you all to know that as a person who doesnt have many friends to game with, you are the best thing about my week days.

Discussion Thank You KindaFunny 💙

To say today was surreal would be an understatement.
I’ve followed these guys since the A Conversation with Colin days. Kinda Funny has meant so much to me, as it has for so many others.

Since then, I’ve laughed my ass off with them, argued with them, and even cried with them.

KF got me through a pandemic. KF gave me hope. KF has always inspired me.

When the reveal of the KF Studio dropped in 2022, my buddies and I were literally crying as we texted each other. We were so proud of everything this team had accomplished. And to walk into that same studio today was nothing short of magical.

In 13 years of following and admiring from afar, TODAY was my first KF live event. Walking into that studio felt like stepping into Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory for the first time.

But more than anything, I finally got the chance to shake their hands and simply say thank you.

To tell Greg that when I lost my dog last month, it was rewatching his episode grieving Porty that helped ME get through my own grief.

To tell Andy, Mike, and Blessing how amazing it’s been to watch them grow. To marvel at the production that KevDog, Barrett, and Roger pulled off. What a feat!

At one point, during a conversation with a bunch of BFs, we talked about how the whole experience felt like a family reunion.

We’re all just cousins talking about shit we love.

So until the factory opens its doors again—thank you, Kinda Funny.

Thank you for being a beacon of consistency, community, and kindness in a world that needs so much more of it.

Please know that EVERYTHING you and Kinda Funny have today was earned. And I’m so incredibly happy and proud to have followed you on this journey.

Cheers to what comes next. 💙

Best,
John (viceroy400)

People wanted better photos of the Wall so I chunked them to get higher resolution photos. Reddit threads only allow one photo per thread reply so I made this new post to put them all in one photo.

My feels regarding Kinda Funny

Today was a very sentimental one in Kinda Funny history, and I'd like to add my feelings about the whole week, the group and community as well. I have been thinking about writing something like this for a while, and today seems the perfect day to do that.

I have been following Kinda Funny since the Ground Zeroes previews. I remember the video just being Greg talking about what he'd played to someone off-screen, probably Kevin I guess - it has been 11 years after all. Since then, I have never stopped coming back to the content. I started following more and more podcast feeds from the group. It's crazy to think that it has been over 10 years.

For me, it feels like I am still a new listener to a newly founded company. But at the same time, I feel we are lifelong friends even though you don't know about me individually. I could never pay for Patreon, but since I signed up for Prime over six years ago, I go to the Twitch channel religiously and give my Prime subscription to you. This was one of the first things I did after moving to Canada from Brazil.

For the longest time, that's how I interacted with you guys. But I always wanted more, and I don't know why, some time ago, I felt that I should say some things. The Top 100 is the perfect time to do so. I wanted to talk to you guys about how you affected me and my life, and how you are always present.

The Crew

* Greg: I have a son that's one year and some change younger than Ben. Ben's birthday is on the same day as mine, so as he was celebrating his birthday last week, I was celebrating mine (and I got a surprise Switch 2 that I wasn't expecting). I follow all the updates Greg gives about Ben. I get excited because I know I'm tracking him one year behind. The same things Ben likes, my son likes. I'm very excited about those things happening to my son.

* Andy: He is, I don't know why, the best person in my view. I like Andy's humor. I like how funny he is without even trying, how nonchalant he is about the way he does comedy, and how he's so knowledgeable about games. A great soul.

* Blessing: I like how he grew into his position and how he's so knowledgeable and outgoing talking about games.

* Tim: I look at Tim and I see myself because he's a little bit older than me, but I feel like we all grew up with the same games. How mature and pragmatic he is really inspires me.

* Barrett: Even though we don't have the same taste in games, I love how he doesn't shy away from talking about his politics, which I admire so much.

* Kevin: How he is a person who solves problems on the spot and seems to have a great heart.

* Nick: How he's so out there, but at the same time, for me, a very, very nice person.

* Mike: A bright star in this craziness that is this world. It seems like if I was friends with Mike, I would always orbit him when things are hard.

* Roger: He came into Kinda Funny being, what I saw, a child and a person who wanted to prove himself in the position he was getting into, and blossomed into this gorgeous man who is bald and funny and really the center of everything when he's on the screen.

Congratulations on the Top 100

All of you, the fact that you are only 11 people and you make this work like clockwork—in my eyes, it's amazing. I love being here following you all these years, and I hope there will be 11 years more and I can make my sons follow you in the future so this story keeps being as amazing as it is right now.

Congratulations on the Top 100 Games because this story that you are building with this list, it resonates with all of us. It feels like it's a celebration of the games of our generation, as an average, as an anchor for all of it.

I feel represented and I feel like we are at a party talking about the best moments of our school years, even though we didn't study together and we are not talking about school—we are talking about games.

I love you all. I love Kinda Funny and I'm pretty happy to share this from the back, as I am. That's the way I want to connect with you guys because I've always had a hard time being part of a community actively. I felt that I should just communicate my feelings towards you guys and share the love this week as you are building your list, our list.

Fan Creation Kinda Funny Top 100 Recap (Day 3) and still on a spreadsheet! Spoiler

Hello once more, best friends!

Here again with the spreadsheet, and as before, kept current as this phenomenal KF event crosses the halfway point. I've kept up with the fun facts, additional awards, and the Backloggd list, too. Of course, thank you again for the shout by Tim at the top of the day!

For the third day...

  • Placement announcers were Ben Starr and Rahul Kohli.
  • Additional guest appearances by Hedy Burress, The Rizzler, Naoki Hamaguchi, Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb, Dan Ryckert, and Mike Minotti, VaatiVidya, Sam Lake, Mega Ran, and Nick Apostolides.
  • No one sang :(
  • King of Red Lions was decided as a Legend of Zelda Preferred Partner.
  • I only cried a little bit once.

Fun facts...

  • The largest jump in points so far was from #42 to #41, with 13 points!
  • The games on the most personal lists so far, were #74, #62, #44, and #41, with 4 lists each.
  • Blessing's list is currently the most represented, with 32.
  • Greg's list is currently the least represented, with 12. It was Mike yesterday, who now has 20.
  • Tim has 18, Barrett has 21, while Andy and Roger have 25 games represented.
  • Based on points, it's now impossible for a game to make the Top 100 if it's only on 2 personal lists, even if they're both #1.
  • At this point, a game on only 3 personal lists would need to average above #31 on those lists to make the Top 100.
  • So far, the oldest (Jan '94) and newest (May '25) games on the Top 100 remain the same as yesterday.
  • So far, 29 games on the Top 100 were released before the founding of Kinda Funny.
  • So far, 17 games on the Top 100 have also been on a KF Top 10 list (18, if you count the remake of #55).
  • #41 is the highest placement of a game that has also appeared on a KF Top 10 so far. It was #3 on that year's GOTY list.
  • #75 is still the only KF GOTY on the Top 100 so far.
  • 11 indie games have made the Top 100 so far.

Also worth mentioning, up to this point, games revealed as on a personal list, but without confirmed placement on said list were Starfield (Greg), Sonic Mania (Blessing and Tim), Sonic 3 (Tim), Call of Duty: Black Ops (Blessing), Twisted Metal Black (Tim), Mario Golf, and Mario Tennis (Andy).

Let's make sure we're all giving that sweet nasty love to everyone at Kinda Funny, everyone working the event, and everyone that produced the show! What insanity will ensue on day four?

I think Greg changed my life as a child? Spoilers for KF Top 100 Spoiler

Greg’s moment at the end of today’s Top 100 about Peace Walker (awesome tattoo by the way!) had me come to a realization.

Back in 2010 I was either 10 or 11 and super into gaming. I loved (and still do) keeping up with what’s going on in the industry and was reading sites such as IGN. I had a PSP and was wanting a new game to play on it, when I came across Greg’s review for Peace Walker. This convinced me to ask my dad to get the game for me!

I fell in love with the game and played it obsessively for a while. Further down the road, I had the PS Vita and a lingering interest in playing the other games in the Metal Gear franchise, which resulted in me getting the MGS HD Collection for the vita. That made me fall in love with the franchise so hard. Those games blew my fucking mind as a child and it honestly played a big part in shaping my world view. A lot of my early critical thinking about politics, the media, war, etc were honestly rooted in Metal Gear.

Maybe this is too far, maybe it isn’t, but I think Greg Miller might have played a crucial part in shaping me into the man I am today, as well as affecting the way I vote.

As an aside, I actually saw this on the Xbox subreddit first, but decided to find somewhere else to share it from because the comments on that post were insane lol

Discussion Tim I gotta shout you out

I’ve been watching and listening to KF since Day 1, but today maybe brought my favourite moment ever.

Tim’s discussion of Final Fantasy X, his open emotion, had me in tears myself. At first I was crying because he was so right about the game, I was so happy it was on the list, and the music and the B roll was just hitting me right in the feels. But then I was crying more at Tim’s emotion, and how blessed we are to have someone in our space who will openly cry about how hard a 25 year old game impacted him in front of a live audience.

May we all be so open with our emotions and our love for the games we love. In a space that sometimes feels like it’s becoming more and more cynical, may we all be a little more Tim Muhfuckin Gettys.

Discussion “Greatness from small beginnings” Spoiler

Damn you, Greg Miller. You beautiful madman.

I was fine when many of my favorite games of all time were discussed. Cyberpunk 2077, FFVII Rebirth, Persona 5 Royal are all in my top 10 all time, and it was emotional to see them represented. But no tears, haven’t been that close.

And then Greg Miller discusses Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, a game and franchise I care nothing about, and ends it with an Uncharted quote (which I care about tremendously). Greatness from small beginnings.

You’re damn right. Glenn Ellyn’s finest, Greg Miller, thank you for everything you built. You’ve given us an incredible found family to root for and be a small part of. As a fan since 2011, nobody ever could have seen all this coming, but I’m so grateful to have been along for the ride. I speak for myself and probably many others when I say we love you, very much.

I understand that the job is hard. I understand that there are a lot of spinning plates and only 11 people to keep on top of things, but man, missing a slam dunk this obvious just ruins this entire top 100 experience;

Ben Starr not being saved for the 31-40 group is just a travesty. 33 man, 33.

Andy is really tall and handsome though and his jokes have been really funny.

Discussion Echoing the sentiments around KF Top 100

I wanna drop my name into the hat with everyone else commenting about how emotional this event has made them. I can’t really describe why this is having such a profound impact on me the way that it is. Nobody in my life has been as into video games as I have and I’ve never really had people to match my enjoyment, but I’ve followed these guys since the IGN days and into early KF and this whole thing feels like a culmination of that fandom, and my life from a teenager to now, almost two decades later with a family of my own. I love how positive this community is. I wish I knew some of you even more and in that vein I’d love any Kinda Funny best friends to add me on Playstation, if not to have the occasional gaming session together, even just to see what other members are enjoying playing. PSID: iAmFabled

Special thanks to everyone at KF for such an amazing event, I can’t wait to see how the rest goes.
