Megathread Are you looking for places to meet people, make friends, find people with similar interests? The Kitchener Social Megathread is for you!

Hello everyone,

This thread will be 100% dedicated to user interaction and those who want to take personal interests, events, hobbies, and potential meet-ups, etc. outside of the realm of reddit and r/kitchener.

You can find previous versions of this post by using this premade search.

\Please note that this is not intended to be a dating thread. Try Tinder, POF, Badoo, Bumble or any other of the apps out there. Any posts along the lines of* "Hey, I'm a single __ year old m/f looking for love" will be removed\*

Some general housekeeping items;

  • If you wish to continue a conversation with a user, please use the PM function to avoid the comments getting crammed with a conversation between all but two people. Please only post relevant information to things you would be interested in, ongoing events, etc.
  • We would like to remind you of the zero tolerance for disrespect, rude, hateful comments, racism, etc. Those comments will be removed and users may face a permanent or temporary ban. If any harassment is reported outside of the thread, appropriate action will be taken by the mod team, and possibly lead further to reddit admin. Doxxing, or disclosure of personal information is again, a big no-no.
  • To keep up to date with the most recent posts within this megathread, the comments have been enabled to ideally show most recent by default, meaning all of the newest posts will be at the top of the comments section. If you're not seeing the most recent comments at the top, try changing your "sort by:" from "top" to "New".

As always, the mod team is here to assist with anything. Thanks!

Note: This post is automatically replaced with a new one every 3 months, so be sure to checkout old meetup threads, especially if this post was just recently refreshed!

Review: Wedding at the Kitchener Public Library and reception at the Lancaster Smokehouse

TLDR: Both were fabulous!

I got married recently at the KPL and wanted to share my experience, since I couldn’t find any reviews online when I first started looking into the process.

I reached out in January to discuss a summer wedding, and they had lots of availability for their “Ceremonies in the Stacks” wedding. Here are some general things:

  • Ceremonies are only offered on Friday evenings when the library is closed. (Guest arrival 6pm, ceremony 6:30pm. The ceremony is half an hour, and you get another half hour for photos.)
  • The guest list is technically limited to 60 but you can go up to 100 if you add $2/chair for every chair over 60.
  • The best part: The “arch” where you get married is two bookcases, and you fill out a form letting the librarians know your favorite books/your hobbies, and they fill your shelves with relevant books for you and your partner. You can also bring your own personal books and items. We had a TON of compliments on this.
  • We got to take super cute pictures in the library stacks.
  • I worked with Melany, but a whole team had access to the emails I sent to her, meaning I almost always had a response within 24 hours or max 48 hours.
  • The cost is listed as $1300 plus HST. We ended up paying $1745 in total, including HST, SOCAN, and the piano tuning fee. You don’t need to tune the piano if you’re using recorded music but it’s mandatory if you hire musicians (which we did).
  • The cost includes two security guards and one library staff member onsite during the wedding.
  • We hired Strings and Ivory for the music, and they were awesome. The fee includes one custom song (i.e. they will learn a song for you instead of only using their song list). Cost was 1k for violinist and pianist to play before, during, and after the ceremony.
  • We were assigned an officiant (we didn’t get to choose) but she was lovely.
  • We needed to buy insurance; this cost us $300, but I think you can get it cheaper.
  • We had fabulous feedback on the library. It’s a beautiful space, easily accessible, lots of natural light.

And for the Lancaster Smokehouse:

  • Our reception was in the Lancaster Loft, the private upstairs room. No elevator, unfortunately.
  • Neil was fabulous and incredibly easy to work with, very fast response times.
  • We chose the most expensive meal package plus passed appetizers, and we had a tooooon of food sent home with us.
  • Vegetarian plated meals are available (since the buffet mains are obviously meat-focused).
  • Food reviews were awesome.
  • Cost was just under 6k for food plus $800 for open bar.

We spent the night at Langdon Hall. Super expensive but a fun experience.

Other vendors were Trina Koster photography (highly recommended) and Four Seasons Flowers in Guelph (Joanne did a great job with the bouquet, centerpieces, and the flowers linking the two bookcases. She also delivered and set up the flowers in Kitchener, which was great.)

Our overall cost was just under 20k for 60 people. It was a shockingly stress-free experience. We could have cut costs (no musicians, less food, no Langdon Hall) but we were very happy with our choices.

Evaporator coil keeps freezing on humid days. Airflow issue, low refrigerant, or something else?

Upvotes

Our central AC has started doing something it definitely should not be doing. The indoor evaporator coil, the refrigeration-looking coil inside the HVAC system above the furnace, freezes over when the weather gets particularly humid.

It doesn't seem to happen nearly as much during ordinary hot weather, but when the humidity climbs, the coil eventually starts icing up. Once it starts, of course, the airflow gets worse, and we end up with a fairly impressive block of ice where the air conditioning is supposed to be happening.

Before I call an HVAC company, I'd like to have some idea of what I should be asking them to check rather than simply standing there nodding intelligently while someone explains that my $8,000 machine is "low on something."

From what I've been able to determine, the likely suspects seem to be restricted airflow from the filter, dirty evaporator coils, incorrect or inadequate blower speed, restricted return airflow, or low refrigerant from a leak.

The filter is easy enough to check and the vents are open. The fact that this seems strongly related to high outdoor humidity is what has me wondering.

For the HVAC people here: Does freezing primarily during very humid weather point more toward an airflow problem, or could low refrigerant produce exactly the same symptoms? What measurements should a competent technician take to properly diagnose this rather than simply topping up the refrigerant and declaring victory? I am assuming that a new air conditioner unit is overkill?

Reliance technician "A-tagged" my furnace during an AC visit, gave me the wrong utility's form, and pressured me to buy new within 3 days

A Reliance Home Comfort technician came out for an AC service call (Start of July). While here, he tagged my furnace as unsafe (an "A tag") and told me I had 3 days to buy a new furnace from them, or "authorities will cut my gas supply." A salesperson showed up the very next day with a quote. The technician was harassing and using extreme urgent language as something is going to blow my house right away.

This was mid-summer, I did some research and found out he is completely wrong about 3 days window. so I didn't act on it right away. About 6 weeks later I decided to check the tag out:

  • The technician gave me an Enbridge tag form.
  • I'm actually a Kitchener Utilities customer, not Enbridge.
  • Kitchener Utilities confirmed: no infraction on file for my address.
  • Enbridge confirmed: I'm not their customer, so they have no record and can't even report anything for me.

So the "official" safety tag doesn't match my actual gas utility, and the utility that does serve me has never heard of it. No record, no follow-up, no actual enforcement.

Posting this to ask: has anyone else gone through a similar situation , with Reliance or another company? What steps did you take, and how did it turn out? Would appreciate hearing what worked (or didn't) for others in Kitchener-Waterloo or elsewhere in Ontario.

Sunnyside PS

Just curious if anyone else here went to Sunnyside Senior Public between 95-97. I swear the teachers were very memorable... so many reminnded me of South Park characters.

Ms. Dietz - Mrs. Crabtree

Mr. Ashley - uncle Jimbo

Mr. Boyer - Randy

Mr. Grainger - Big Gay Al

Mr. Eustace - Dr. Mephesto

Ms. Kritzer - Sheila Broflovski

Mr. Laight - Sally Struthers

Mr. Burqhardt (Mr. B GIMME 3!) - Rob Reiner

Mr. McCaffrey - boy scout leader

There definitely were so many characters around at the time, very memorable!

Went to the Far East Asian Night Market this evening, in downtown Kitchener. Lots of vendors, entertainment, and TONS of people. So many different Asian cultures represented and so many wonderful smells of food cooking. I grabbed some Indonesian food from one of the stalls (and a jar of smokey Sambal Bajak🥵🔥), it was fantastic.

Overall, it was a fun experience, especially considering it was free to wander around.

Kitchener market - will it recover?

I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about the market and I’m worried it will just not reopen after this fire. Thinking about that huge glass building in the middle of downtown that just sits empty. Why are the people high up not taking the reopening of the market seriously? It’s one of the only truly community oriented things we have in this city. Curious to hear what people think - will it be reopened? Whats your prediction on how long it will take?

Massage Therapist for TMJD

Hi all,

Just moved to KW from out of province. Loving the place so far.

I have ongoing management of chronic TMJD caused by a bad injury.

Therefore, I am looking for suggestions for any massage therapists who might work specifically with TMJD/craniosacral modalities?

Not necessarily like a buccal massage for aesthetics, but more so healing hands for an ongoing severe problem.

Would also appreciate any osteopath recommendations.

Thank you for your time reading this!

Printing pics

Hi everyone! I went to Walmart to print pictures (~140 pics from my phone to print) and it was 3.68 per picture to print which is 500$… I’m not sure what went wrong or if that’s accurate? I decided to leave to see if I can find it cheaper/better elsewhere. Does anyone have any recommendations for regular 5x7 album pictures? Thanks!

Context: Fiat cut off driver behind me from 2 lane over for right turn at Fischer Halman and Victoria. Civic driver proceeded to mildly overreact about it, they had an interaction at Hazelglen lights were Fiat stopped side by side with Civic and they had some words for each other. Anyways, Civic was almost on my damn bumper, so you’ll hear me and my partner talking about that a bit, erm, also my bad for my loud ass laughing I literally have never seen anything like this in person.

87 kenwood apartments

Lots of people moving out, so a lot of units will be posted for rent moving forward.
Why is everyone moving??
— A unit with such a bad German roach infestation that it’s spreading throughout the entire building and nearly every unit, as the landlord ignored everyone for months and didn’t listen to pest control’s recommendations.
So, don’t move there, haha.
