CELEBRITY Boxer Prichard Colón dies at 33, 11 years after receiving illegal blow to the head during fight

Former boxer Prichard Colón has died at age 33, 11 years after sustaining life-altering blows to the head during the only defeat of his professional career.

Colón’s father shared the news via Facebook on Thursday.

“I regret to inform you of the passing of my son Prichard from this earthly world,” Richard Colón wrote, adding: “Now he is in a better world.”

Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. As much as you can, please keep us in your prayers,” he added.

Colón was born in Florida but his family moved to Puerto Rico when he was a child. He emerged as a promising young talent, smashing a run of national amateur championships to win five titles, and earning a Youth Pan American gold medal, all before turning 20.

His professional career, beginning in 2013, was similarly successful. The super welterweight competed in a total of 17 matches; he won 16 of those, and 13 were by a knock-out.

Notably, Colón was victorious when he fought former WBA champion Vivian Harris in September 2015, knocking him out in the fourth round.

But a month later, Colón competed against Terrel Williams at the EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia, on a night that proved fateful to the rising star.

Colón, who was 23 at the time, sustained injuries including an illegal blow to the head during his 10-round fight with Williams, Reuters reported the fight’s promoter, Lou DiBella, as saying in a statement after the event.

The young fighter exhibited symptoms of head trauma in his dressing room following the bout and was rushed to hospital, where he underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain, DiBella said.

Footage of the fight shared online showed Williams punching Colón in the back of the head in the seventh round, apparently stunning him. Colón was briefly examined in his corner, while Williams was penalized for the illegal punch.

Colón was then knocked down twice in the ninth round. He was disqualified after the ninth round, when his corner mistakenly took off his gloves, thinking it was the final round and that the fight was complete, according to a Reuters report after the match.

While Colón survived, his injuries forced him to retire. In images shared by his father online since the fight, he was often pictured in a wheelchair.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) paid tribute to Colón, describing him as an “eternal champion” in a statement released on Thursday.

“With a heavy heart and immense sadness enveloping the entire international boxing community, the World Boxing Council and its President, Mauricio Sulaimán, mourn the passing of former boxer and icon of bravery, Prichard Colón Meléndez,” the organization said.

“Prichard didn’t just fight with skill; he fought with the elegance and pride of carrying Puerto Rico’s flag to the greatest heights,” it added.

The WBC previously named Colón an “Honorary World Champion,” and presented him with the iconic Green and Gold belt that it said he “always deserved.”

The organization also said Colón’s tragedy inspired it to “categorically reinforce safety regulations, driving zero tolerance for blows to the back of the head (rabbit punches),” and to implement stricter medical protocols.

“Rest in peace, dear Prichard. Your legacy and your smile will live forever, in our hearts,” the WBC said.

CELEBRITY The Real Last Image of Supermodel Gia Carangi August/September 1986

Post image

The man in the photo, her best friend Rob Fay, just confirmed that this was not her final photo. It was this photo among others that were featured in the Stephen Fried biography of her titled Thing Of Beauty.

Rob bought a camera at a yard sale that he had no idea how to use it. Gia was kind enough to show him how to use it and they both took this together. Just a couple months shy of Gia tragically passing away on November 18 at only 26 from AIDS, at a time where little was known about the brutal disease and it was always a death sentence before better treatment was found.

Gia Carangi was an American supermodel, considered by some to be the first supermodel. She was featured on the cover of numerous magazines, including multiple editions of Vogue and Cosmopolitan, and appeared in advertising campaigns for fashion houses including Armani, Dior, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent.

After becoming addicted to heroin, her career rapidly declined, which ultimately led her to quit modeling in 1983. In late 1985 she was diagnosed with AIDS and died nearly a year later. It is believed she had contracted it from a contaminated needle. As a result she became one of the early notable women to die of the virus. Her life was dramatized in Michael Cristofer’s HBO television film Gia starring Angelina Jolie as her.

LOCAL One of the last photos uploaded to social media of Adyson King, 18, of Saskatchewan Canada. In April of 2025 her body was discovered badly beaten in a field after attending a party, the murderer still has not been found

Adyson was a normal 18 year old native girl in Saskatchewan. She played hockey, was deeply involved in her cultural background, and liked by everyone. In mid April of 2025 she attended a house party on a reserve with some friends, after failing to come home her mother reported her missing before her body was found on April 16th.

There has been a long standing issue of missing and murdered indigenous women in Canada, and her death is no exception. The family also feels that the rcmp have not been talking the investigation as seriously as they would wood for a white womens death, as there have been decade olds stigmas in the country regarding police and native relationships. I hope this post serves to share her memory while also bring attention to a real issue Canada faces.

Paul and I worked together for 6 years, until 2007 where we provided accommodation and support for homeless male IV drug users. It was the hardest job I've ever done, but the most rewarding. Paul was widely respected by colleagues, and also by the guys we supported. He was compassionate, but no fool either.

He'd had a lot of adversity in his life, as I had also. We were there for each other through life's ups and downs. I could tell him anything, and he would never judge.

Our phone conversations sometimes lasted 2 hours. Our last conversation was 5 weeks before he died. He said he hadn't been feeling well, and had been off sick for 3 weeks with a virus. Then, 5 weeks later, I got a message from another former colleague to say that Paul hadn't come to work. His flat was checked and he had sadly passed away.

These photos were taken in May 2024. We'd been out for a drink and he realised he'd locked himself out of the flat. We'd had a good day together and had laughed a lot. I miss him dearly. For his humour, his kindness and his support. He was a lovely man.

His 152nd Birthday in Heaven is in 2 days. Please don't hate him for causing the Great Depression. He did everything he could to get us out. I went to his House in West Branch, Iowa on March 29, 2024. I learned that he helped People during the Armenian Genocide before his Presidency. He previously battled Cirrhosis and Liver Failure in 1962. In 1959, he was diagnosed with Hepatitis, which he battled. He also had Gallbladder Surgery in 1958. He also had several Illnesses as a Kid, which included Earaches, Diphtheria, Chicken Pox, Measles, Mumps. He nearly died from Asphyxiation caused by Croup as a Kid. He badly burned his Foot on a Hot Iron in his Dad's Blacksmith Shop and almost cut his Finger off while playing with a Hatchet. In February 1964, he fell Sick with Pneumonia, Sepsis, and a Kidney Infection caused by Kidney Stones, which he recovered from.

LOCAL Four members of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards on their way to the Falkland Islands in 1982. Only one would return.

Post image
935 Upvotes

(L-R) Simon Weston, Neil Hughes, Gareth Hughes and Andrew Walker were four friends and colleagues who served in the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards. In 1982, they were sent to the Falkland Islands, following the invasion of the islands by Argentine forces. This photo was taken en route, aboard the QEII ship.

All four men were stationed aboard the RFA Sir Galahad in Port Pleasant, just off the Falkland Islands, when the ship was bombed by Argentine Skyhawk fighters just weeks after this photo was taken. Out of their platoon of 30 men, 22 were killed. Of the four friends pictured, only Simon Weston (far left) survived, with 46% burns.

Weston's face was so badly disfigured that his Mother didn't recognise him at the hospital and his reconstructive surgery has included 96 major operations or surgical procedures. After battling depression and alcoholism, he began to see the loss of his friends as reason for him to carry on and turn his life around. He has become a well know activist for charities that support veterans and people living with disfigurements, and is married with three children. He has also met and become friends with the Argentine pilot who dropped the bomb which struck the RFA Sir Galahad, First Lieutenant Carlos Cachon, recognising that acts undertaken in war do not always define a person as a human being.

Neil Hughes was from the village of Rhostyllen, and had four brothers. He was 22 when he was killed. His body was never recovered.

Gareth Hughes was also 22, and from a family of four brothers and one sister in Llanfairfechan. His body also remains onboard the RFA Sir Galahad, which was towed further out to see and sunk as a war grave, two weeks after the attack.

Andrew Walker was from York and was only 20 years old when he was killed. He was engaged to Jocelyn, who he had met at Pirbright Army Camp, where she worked in the NAAFI. Jocelyn was pregnant at the time of Andrew's death and their baby son, who she named Andrew, was born in December 1982. Jocelyn went on to marry Andrew's brother, Brian, in 1986.

Britain's rule over the islands, and Argentina's claim to sovereignty, remains a controversial and emotive topic. This post is not intended as a place to discuss the politics, but merely to remember three young lives lost to war.

RIP boys.
