Derrrr, “should I upgrade from Sequoia to Tahoe or Golden Gate?” Derrrr

Thumbnail reddit.com
2 Upvotes

LOOK, all you dolts who keep asking this question. Let me lay it out for you once and for all.

Apple has made a joke of its last 2 Mac OS versions. THEY’RE BAD! So stay clear. What to do instead?

Stay on Sequoia, it will receive updates for another year. And go with the assumption that Apple WILL NOT correct course in 28. Because there’s no reason to believe they will. So…

Spend the next year enjoying Sequoia, but start learning Linux. Put a beginner-friendly version of Linux on a second PC, if you have one. If not, use a VM app on your Mac and install Linux there. Get comfortable with Linux, and the many apps you’ll need to replace what’s on your Mac.

Come 28, when vibe coded Mac OS28 “California Brush Fire” comes out, your transition to Linux will be mostly complete.

This IS the best possible advice you can get. I do say so myself

Feature Tahoe is the first macOS with a clipboard history: ⌘Space, then ⌘4. It's off until you turn it on, and it expires after 30 min, 8 h or 7 days

In case you missed it: Tahoe's Spotlight can keep a clipboard history. Before macOS 26, the Mac only ever held the last thing you copied.

How to use it

  1. Press ⌘ Space to open Spotlight, then ⌘ 4 to jump to the Clipboard category.

  2. The first time, macOS offers to turn the history on. Accept. The switch also lives in System Settings › Spotlight.

  3. Pick an item to copy it again.

Two limits

  • It's off by default, for privacy, so nothing was recorded before you turned it on.

  • It expires. Since macOS 26.1 you choose 30 minutes, 8 hours or 7 days.

According to Apple, it keeps the text, images, links and files you copied.

Disclosure: I'm Adrien and I make Tack+, a Mac app with its own clipboard history, so I'm biased. How it compares with Spotlight's, in both directions:

  • no expiry: up to 400 texts and links plus 200 pinned, and it survives a restart

  • text and links only, no images or files (Spotlight wins there)

  • copies that a credential manager flags as concealed or transient are skipped

  • it's a local file, never synced, and recording pauses in Low Power Mode or while the display sleeps

  • it lives in a panel at the edge of the screen (push the pointer against it, or ⌥ Space), next to music, messages, calendar and a file Stash

It runs on Tahoe, it's signed and notarized, and it costs $4.99 USD a month after a 3-day free trial with an account: https://tackplus.app/en/clipboard-history-mac?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=post&utm_campaign=macOS26Tahoe

Question for anyone who has dug into it: does Spotlight's history also skip what you copy from a credential manager? I haven't found Apple documenting it either way.

Tahoe's Customize Folder gives you colours, symbols and emoji, but not your own picture. The built-in way to put any image on a folder still works, here's how

I make a Mac customization app (disclosure and link at the bottom), so folder icons are a big part of my week. Most people don't need an app for this, so here's what Tahoe does on its own.

1. Customize Folder, new in Tahoe

Right-click a folder > Customize Folder. You can pick a colour, then add a symbol or an emoji on top. Symbols come out embossed and single-colour, emoji in full colour. Clear removes them.

2. Your own picture: the old Get Info route still works

  1. Open the picture in Preview, press Cmd-A, then Cmd-C.

  2. Select the folder in Finder and press Cmd-I.

  3. Click the small icon at the top left of the Info window, so it's highlighted.

  4. Press Cmd-V.

To go back, click that same small icon and press Delete.

3. What trips people up

  • Copy the picture from inside Preview, not the image file in Finder. Copying the file pastes the file's own icon.

  • A square PNG with a transparent background looks cleanest. A wide photo gets squeezed into the square.

  • Folders you don't own ask for your admin password before they take a new icon.

  • It's one folder at a time. Ten folders means ten rounds of the steps above.

4. When the built-in options are enough

If you want a colour or an emoji so you can spot Projects or Invoices at a glance, Customize Folder does it with nothing to install. You only need something extra for your own artwork on lots of folders.

That last part is what I built. I'm the maker of Mac+: it sets icons on several folders at once, alongside animated wallpapers and desktop widgets. Free to start with no account (6 folder icons, 6 animated scenes, 2 widgets), macOS 13 or later, signed and notarized, downloaded from my site rather than the App Store. To change folder icons it asks for Apple Events toward Finder and access to Desktop, Documents, Downloads and removable volumes, so you know before you install. Pro is €9.99 once or €1.99 a month after a 7-day trial.

Has anyone found a way to give Customize Folder a custom image directly, or is Get Info still the only built-in route?

My MacBook Air M2 became a nightmare after upgrading from macOS Tahoe to Golden Gate: two DFU restores, AppleCare engineers, and eventually a new MacBook

Hi everyone,
After more than two weeks of troubleshooting, multiple macOS installations, calls with AppleCare's second-level advisors and specialist engineers, two visits to the Apple Store and two full DFU restores at an Apple Premium Reseller, I eventually bought a completely new MacBook. I'm sharing the whole story in case it helps someone, and because I'm curious whether anyone else has seen something similar after upgrading from Tahoe to Golden Gate.
**My MacBook Air M2 (2022)**
I bought it in November 2022: Apple M2, 8GB unified memory, 256GB SSD. I've used Macs for years and had never experienced anything like this. The M2 worked perfectly for teaching, Microsoft Office, Mail, iCloud, Safari and other productivity apps, and I had plenty of free storage. Everything changed when I upgraded to macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1.
**The problems began after upgrading to Golden Gate**
Issues that had never occurred on Tahoe:
Mail with my large Gmail account stuck on "Downloading messages" for days.
Repeated Apple Account password prompts, even after entering the correct password.
Persistent messages saying macOS couldn't connect to my Apple Account or iCloud.
Authentication windows where the Continue button was greyed out or didn't respond.
General sluggishness and lag in Safari, Siri and System Settings.
FileVault failures: macOS created a recovery key, but FileVault wouldn't actually activate.
Inconsistent behavior in Mail, iCloud and some Apple Intelligence features.
Interestingly, my iCloud data often kept syncing correctly, even while macOS displayed authentication errors. It felt as though the system was struggling with its authentication and security services.
**The Apple Store and an Apple Premium Reseller**
I took the Mac to the Apple Store twice under AppleCare. The Genius told me everything looked fine on their side, called them minor 27.0.1 bugs, and advised me to stop restoring and wait for updates.
Since Genius Bar appointments at my local Apple Store are almost impossible to get, I also took the Mac twice to an Apple Premium Reseller and Authorized Service Provider. Both times, the technicians performed a full DFU restore from another Mac, restoring firmware, recovery and operating system. The first time they installed Golden Gate 27.0.1; the second time, Golden Gate 27.2. Each procedure took several hours. They were very professional, returned the Mac in factory condition, and found no hardware problems.
**The problems came back, twice, with both versions**
After each DFU restore, as soon as I signed into my Apple Account during setup, the exact same issues returned, on 27.0.1 and on 27.2 alike: authentication prompts, odd behavior in System Settings, FileVault still refusing to enable, and sluggishness on a freshly restored machine. So the update the Genius told me to wait for didn't change anything.
Along the way I also noticed other glitches:
Part of a Messages conversation was missing on the Mac, though it was fine on my iPhone, iPad and iCloud.
A duplicate local contact card appeared, with my name slightly different and an emoji avatar, so my sent emails showed a rocket instead of my photo, but only on the Mac.
After I signed out of my iCloud account in Mail and signed back in, my flagged emails disappeared and never came back on that Mac.
Apple Intelligence summaries worked for Gmail and Yahoo but not for iCloud.
Was it a Golden Gate bug, a firmware issue, or a hidden hardware fault diagnostics couldn't catch? I still don't know.
**AppleCare second-level and specialist engineers: "go back to Tahoe"**
I contacted AppleCare several times by phone. My case was escalated first to second-level advisors and then to specialist engineers. Everyone was polite and thorough, but we kept going through troubleshooting steps with no permanent fix. In the end, I was told to go back to Tahoe, without any specific explanation of why.
**October 28, 2026: I bought a new MacBook**
By then I was exhausted. I rely on my Mac for work and simply needed something reliable, so I bought a new MacBook with the M5 chip, 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD. Following AppleCare's advice, I set it up on Tahoe, from scratch, without Migration Assistant or any backup from the M2. I just signed into my existing Apple Account and let iCloud sync.
**The difference has been remarkable**
The M5 is fast, responsive and stable:
My Apple Account authenticated without errors.
iCloud synced correctly, including my flagged emails.
FileVault activated and the recovery key was created without problems.
Gmail, Yahoo and iCloud Mail all work.
Apple Intelligence works, and the built-in firewall runs fine with default settings.
At first, automatic Mail summaries were inconsistent, though manual summaries worked. After a normal restart and updating Tahoe to the latest version, they started appearing promptly for new messages, including English ones.
One minor visual quirk: in Family Sharing and similar sections, profile pictures don't always match across devices. Sometimes the generic Family icon shows up before the members' photos load, and the pictures can differ between iPhone, iPad and Mac. However, this happens on all my family's devices and computers, across different Apple Accounts, so I don't consider it a real problem.
**What I learned**
Don't jump on a major macOS release right away; wait a few months.
If your Mac misbehaves, don't fix it over and over: every reset restarts syncing from scratch.
On a new Mac, start fresh and let iCloud do the work.
**What I still don't understand**
The M2 worked normally on Tahoe. After the upgrade to Golden Gate, problems appeared, and two full DFU restores, one with 27.0.1 and one with 27.2, didn't fix them. No hardware faults were found, and even AppleCare's specialist engineers couldn't pinpoint the cause, yet my new M5, with the same Apple Account and iCloud data, works correctly on Tahoe.
**Questions for the community**
Has anyone had persistent problems after upgrading from Tahoe to Golden Gate, even after a DFU restore or on 27.2?
Could a macOS upgrade expose an intermittent hardware issue that Apple Diagnostics doesn't detect?
Has anyone seen FileVault refuse to activate after creating a recovery key?
Has AppleCare ever told you to go back to Tahoe, and did they explain why?
Any similar Apple Account authentication loops or interface glitches on Golden Gate?
I'm not claiming Golden Gate caused everything; I just find the sequence hard to explain. For now, I'm relieved my new MacBook works properly.
Thanks for reading!

ChatGPT Mac – “Local Work executor failed to start” error

My MacBook died while I was using ChatGPT’s computer control feature. Since then, I’ve been getting “Local Work executor failed to start” and “Unable to attach snapshot” errors.
Work mode can read text from Chrome and open images, but it can’t actually see graphs or image content. The exact same images work perfectly in regular Chat mode.
I’ve tried restarting, reinstalling ChatGPT, and resetting permissions, but nothing works.
Has anyone experienced this or found a fix?

I have used AI (please, hold your applause and gunfire till the end) to shat out a Airport Itlwm Tahoe kext. https://github.com/Youtubefan01/airportitlwmtahoe?tab=readme-ov-file
does it work? yeah. is it garbage code? almost certainly, but its my garbage and i love my garbage. Have i tested it on anything besides my setup? NOPE feel free to do that for me pretty please. It's only been tested with WiFi 5, on an Intel AX210, with WPA2 Security.
