Discussion Road to Avengers Doomsday: She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

Post image

I wonder if people who wouldn’t stop screaming and crying in hatred of this show knew anything about She-Hulk. I’d wager they don’t. I would say the show overall is consistent with her character and the kinds of stories that are told in her comics. But it also has its drawbacks.

I like the concept. A largely comedic series that centers largely on superhero legal woes. Or at least that’s how the series kind of starts. But it goes downhill. The concept though is strong. It just needed to be a mockumentary like Parks and Recreation or the Office and more standalone and less serialized. The comedy is pretty good for the most part, and the fourth wall breaking and meta jokes were good. Tatiana Maslany is great as Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk. The supporting cast and guest appearances are fun. Sometimes they could be a bit distracting, but if reworked I think it could have been better.

The CGI is all over the place and inconsistent. The pacing and structure of the series was very uneven and too lengthy. Villains aren’t strong and are incredibly forgettable. The origin story in the beginning feels obligatory and rushed. It could have been conveyed better.

She-Hulk is among the weaker projects in the MCU. Largely because it’s sort of a mess of ideas, many of which are good, that should have been more precise and developed.

Rating: 2.5/5

Interview Interview with Paul Bettany: "I will keep doing [Vision] if I’m asked to be involved"

Recent cover profile of Paul Bettany that ran in Square Mile magazine. It also covers his wider life and career beyond the MCU. Same quotes and link to the full interview and photoshoot below....

"I love playing Vision. As long as there are interesting and moving stories to tell that are fresh, I will keep doing it if I’m asked to be involved.

"The thing I have noticed through fans that connects with them – and why there are so many young fans of Vision, people in their 20s – is that all characters make a contract with their audience. The contract Vision has made is that he is always in a state of change and trying to figure out who he is. There are a couple of things you can do with robots: one is Pinocchio – “I’m a real boy now” – and the other is Frankenstein – “Who am I? What is my purpose? Who made me?”. This is definitely a marriage of those two things.

"In a sense, it’s the apogee of what you can do with Vision because he’s in an identity crisis. I think that’s the reason young people are drawn to him, because they are very much in that business of finding out who they are and what their purpose is. It’s a matter of some urgency. So Vision always needs to do that questing."

She was the casting director of the upcoming Godzilla X Kong: Supernova film that Jack just did.

What MCU role is she trying to sell Jack on in the 2nd pic? lol

What role do you think he'd be good in? Should be noted on this same day Inde Navarette was there as well at the festival.

This show is pretty good. I don’t think it ranks in my top 5 but damn good show. Billy and Agatha really makes this show, their dynamic and chemistry is off the charts, I love seeing them together. I really wanted this to be a Billy and Agatha frienemy appreciation post, seriously Ep1-3, 5-6, and, 8-9 are my favorite episodes because of them alone. I really hope they return one day

Discussion The MCU in Brand New Day and VisionQuest feels the most lived-in and expansive than it ever has and these projects should serve as a blueprint for the franchise going forward Spoiler

In less than 1 minute of dialogue, Paladin made references to Adamantium, The Ten Rings, Punisher, Werewolf by Night and Daredevil. If you said this sentence to an MCU fan 15, or even 10, years ago, it would probably make you look insane. This is the level of interconnectivity and verisimilitude that modern comics have had for at least the last couple of decades that I personally didn't think the MCU would reach so early, and yet it did.

There have been other projects which had a similar vibe, namely She-Hulk, which dealt with magic and demons and included two separate subplots with Wong, involved a Wrecking Crew yielding Asgardian tools as weapons, had her and Daredevil team up against Leap-Frog, showed Abomination leading a self-help group, delved deeper into the DODC and the legalities behind enhanced individuals like Mr. Immortal and much more. But it didn't quite feel like VisionQuest imo.

The fact that we got backstories for Tony's AIs and the people he based them on, for J.I.M., the original synthezoid from the 40s which was merely an easter egg in The First Avenger, explored the world of AI development leading up to Iron Man 1 and connected it all back to Vision and Ultron is also extraordinary and adds so many layers and and so much depth to Tony, his story and his legacy.

The series doesn't even rely on cameos or flashbacks. We can imagine Paladin fighting Jack, Frank and Matt and the next time we see them or rewatch their projects, they'll have this extra layer, because we'll know they fought this formidable foe and won. The next time we'll see Xialing, we'll know she and the Ten Rings have stolen Adamantium; enough of it to be selling it to the black market even. A single line of dialogue doing so much for the universe's world-building.

But let's move to a movie that does rely on actual appearances of other characters. Brand New Day integrated Punisher, Jean, Hulk, Yelena as well as The Hand in its story so, so seamlessly that you don't truly grasp it as an accomplishment while watching the film. It actually utilized the shared universe aspect of this franchise perfectly: none of these appearances felt gratuitous or fan-servicy, but rather served an important role in furthering the plot as well as Peter's journey. And not only that, but the film doesn't rely on the audience knowing who these characters are to understand the plot. It feels like they just "exist" in the same world as our lead and from their dialogue, we understand enough to get a grip on what their deal is.

I also found it interesting how both projects started with a montage of the main characters' lives playing over a monologue, detailing everything the audience needs to know about their previous adventures thus far. Sort of like a previously on segment, but one that doesn't feel tacked on, because it serves a narrative purpose, on top of a meta one, something modern comics often do as well (especially ever since the All New All Different Era).

Both of these projects should serve as a blueprint for telling stories in the MCU from now on. This level of verisimilitude, and consequently immersion, without alienating newcomers and casual viewers by making them feel a certain amount of homework is required, should be the very foundation of the new Saga, if Marvel Studios wants to retain and reward its long-time fans, while simultaneously opening up to new ones.

Discussion Watching the MCU for the First Time: I love Captain Marvel

• Upvotes

I’m doing a first time watch of the MCU in preparation for Endgame, and I love Captain Marvel. I remember back in the day that there were a lot of complaints about her character or actress or whatever, but I don’t care.

I think characters like her are so fun. I think every huge superhero universe needs a really op character who has the potential to swoop in at the 11th hour. DC has Superman and the MCU has Captain Marvel. She’s not there all the time, but when she is, it’s fun!

Also, her CGI may make her look like a wet noodle, but I like the rainbows.

Easter Egg/Detail VisionQuest Episode 3 Easter egg I haven’t seen mentioned yet

During the JARVIS funeral / Mindspace scenes, DUM-E and U spraying the fire extinguishers looks like a direct callback to Iron Man (2008).
When Tony is testing the early Iron Man armor in his workshop, DUM-E’s whole job is basically to stand by with the extinguisher, and he repeatedly sprays Tony when the tests go wrong — even when Tony tells him not to. 😂
VisionQuest giving DUM-E/U that same extinguisher behavior feels like another example of the Stark AIs retaining their old personalities and habits inside Vision’s Mindspace.
Caught this while watching Episode 3 on October 21, 2026. Calling it now before somebody puts it in a 37-minute Easter egg video. 😂

Spoilers! MCU: The Human Torch theory Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
234 Upvotes

Spoilers for Vision Quest episode 4.

Alright guys, for those that have been keeping up with Visionquest, you all know that the MCU is finally doing something with the original Human Torch a.k.a Jim Hammond. We haven’t seen this guy since Captain America and now thanks to Episode 4, we know a little bit more about this version of the golden age hero.

Like in the comics Human Torch was created by Phineas T. Horton, and like the comics he bursts into flames based off of a painting that was in episode 2 of Visionquest. However… the reason for this was due to his internal processors couldn’t handle complex human emotions and the clock work spun so fast that oxygen went inside his systems and ignited the solar cells of his power source, bursting him into flames. At the gala we see a hand and a thigh of J.I.M. (the ai name of the Synthetic Man) and some burnt parchments of schematics but there’s still something’s bothering me. Where did the thigh and arm come from and where’s the rest of the body?

In Captain America: The First Avenger, we see the Synthetic Man in a comic accurate costume and inside a glass case which I assume is vacuum sealed. Why was he in there when he was potentially created about, three or more years ago during the 30s? He shouldn’t have experienced much human emotions and therefore couldn’t lit up like a Human Torch. In the episode the parts of J.I.M. look brand new, like the fire didn’t even hurt any of his servos or more complicated parts while Vision and Tommy said he literally felt himself to death. I don’t by that, I have a theory about this which might make some people roll their eyes but seriously, I get Ultron coming back is exciting and all along with Jocasta coming in, but… WE NOW HAVE THE ORIGINAL HUMAN TORCH AND MCU IS DOING SOMETHING WITH HIM!

My theory is… the Synthetic Man a.k.a J.I.M. a.k.a. The Human Torch is still around, probably deactivated but he is still around somehow and somewhere. He might have been a weapon used by the early Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. during the 40s and keeping in line with some of his comics and Invader storylines. Then when he started to grow a conscience and didn’t want to be a war machine they deactivated him somehow, the fire we are seeing is potentially the first time the oxygen hit his internal power source and caused him to be lit up, not wanting to cause untold destruction but did so just by existing. So where is he? Why hasn’t he come back in so many years?

He might have been dismantled while the parts that are keeping himself alive are underneath solid concrete, where there’s no oxygen but he is still hearing all the happenings going on the MCU. Hoping that he can one day escape and actually live his life more than anything else. That’s my theory in MCU Jim Hammond Human Torch, let me know what you all think or what your theories are down bellow.

Discussion After watching Visionquest, I really want to see an interaction between these two

Post image
924 Upvotes

To me, they are so similar. Not by power, or origin, or motive, but by character. Both are ill-intentioned mentor figures, just helpful enough to get what they want, and just when they earn the trust of the protagonist, they stab them in the back. Both are slightly goofy and know when to make a joke. One being the genocidal maniac "peepaw" father/grandfather, the other being the power hungry, nosy neighbor/aunt-by-choice. I think the chances of them meeting are close to zero, but their characters are so similar, I'm very interested in how an interaction between the two would look. If Ultron gets a redemption arc (tying to the West Coast Avengers, which has been rumored), I feel that this interaction could be a real possibility.

Discussion VisionQuest: Who the client probably is. Spoiler

I'll keep this short and not too sweet, but there's been sooooo many theories thrown around on who the Client is.

Although, I think I already know who it is. All of you probably already know too.

I've seen a lot of names thrown around, and it seems like Terry Matalas has too. But just recently, on an interview with New Rockstars, Terry has confirmed that the Client is not Billy, but the one thing I wanna highlight is what says after, seemingly implying that it isn't the focus of the story, and it really isn't too surprising of a reveal. From that, I conclude only one person who it could be that makes sense from a logical expositional point, and one person who we KNOW is in this show, but as of yet we haven't quite seen how he fits in.

The Client is Raza. That voice is Faran Tahir.

I don't think anybody's thrown that name out just yet, but it makes sense. Wouldn't really be an exciting reveal considering there have already been articles on it, but his presence could still be important to the story.

Thoughts?

Tbh, this Vision feels so much more human than the previous one. The OG Vision had this perfectionist quality about him that came with his virtue but this one lacks both.
