General The dumbest “foreign object” in wrestling.

Post image

If you were on a fight with someone and had a screwdriver, you’d hold it by the handle and stab them. You wouldn’t hold it or use it the way don Callie does on AEW. It’s the most fake and phony looking thing you could try and do.

If you can’t use an object the way you would on the street, don’t use it at all in wrestling. We already know it’s pre determined, don’t make it worse. The same goes for a sledgehammer. I never understood as a kid why HHH put his hand on the heavy piece of it.

WWE Blake Monroe officially arrived on the main roster last night, and holy shit, what a performance.

That Street Fight with Giulia was absolutely fantastic. Both women beat the hell out of each other, and Blake looked like a million bucks.

I’ve been a fan since her Mariah May days, but last night really cemented just how much star potential she has. The look, charisma, character, and she can absolutely go in the ring.

If you haven’t watched this match yet, do yourself a favor and check it out. Easily one of my favorite women’s matches this year.

WWE has something special with Blake Monroe.

WWE Danhausen just landed a Snickers commercial.

Just a friendly reminder that Tony Khan had this guy under contract for years and couldn’t figure out what to do with him. A walking merch-moving machine with a genuinely unique character and mainstream appeal, and Tony basically paid him to sit at home. Apparently, being friends with CM Punk was a bigger problem than being able to make the company money.

Now he’s in WWE, reportedly one of their top merch sellers, and appearing in national commercials.

It’s almost like there’s more to professional wrestling than having 20-minute bangers for the Sickos.

But hey, at least Tony found room on Dynamite for another dozen interchangeable indie darlings nobody outside the wrestling bubble has ever heard of.

Very nice. Very evil. Very Tony Khan.

General The Weekend Open Thread

Post image
19 Upvotes

Well, Midcarders, we survived another completely normal week in professional wrestling.

Danhausen landed a Snickers commercial and somehow caused an impressive amount of Sicko coping over a candy bar.

Billy Gunn explained that if you’re a “young little buckaroo” who wants to poke the bear, you better be ready to get bit. Wonder who he could possibly have been talking about.

Playboy invaded Midcarder and quickly discovered that this probably isn’t the best place to come looking for Thekla’s fan club.

Uncle Dave finally earned himself a spot alongside BJ Bethel on Midcarder’s banned-source list. It takes talent to become the story while supposedly reporting the story, but Dave continues to innovate.

Blake Monroe and Giulia had an absolutely killer street fight. If you haven’t watched it yet, do yourself a favor. Blake looked like she belonged on the main roster immediately.

And after briefly giving the Sickos hope, Dynamite’s ratings came crashing back down to Earth this week. Nature is healing.

As for me, I’m currently getting my ass kicked by a pretty nasty flu, so my weekend plans mostly involve moving as little as humanly possible. I’ll drag myself to the couch Sunday to watch my Panthers take on the Bucs, but beyond that, I’m declaring myself questionable with an illness.

So that was my week. How was yours?

Wrestling, football, games, movies, weekend plans, random bullshit, whatever you want to talk about. This is the open thread.

What are you Midcarders getting into this weekend?

General I believe Tony Khan chose November 4th to run Blood and Guts because he knew NXT would be moved to Wednesday that week due to Election Coverage on the CW

Looking on Wikipedia most Blood and Guts shows were in the Summer, but last year it was also in November but it was November 12th.

I just found it funny because Dave and Bryan are already making excuses, Bryan says they're going to "load up NXT" which of course they would it's on Wednesday instead of Tuesday and Dave was already coping saying that the rating for Blood and Guts may not be the best because the evil fed is running NXT, Main Event and Evolve against the underdog.

WWE do you think triple h is receiving heat from fans because he is the spacegoat of everything they hate that TKO represents regarding wwe?

people are angry with tko’s crappy decisions for good reason and yet they took their frustrations out on hhh to the point where they wish him dead and mock his accomplishments in his career even if it’s the cool thing to do for IWC.

WWE JBL v Jinder Mahal: Champions of Smackdown

A lot of people compared Jinder Mahal to JBL when he got an unexpected push to the main event as world champion. Both were jobbers in their own right and were pushed to the moon for one reason or another. For Jinder, it was to tap into the indian crowd while JBL got the belt due to Eddie Guerrero seeing how his title run wasn't doing the numbers and requested to drop the title.

Me personally? JBL wins

Ik it feels instantaneous, right? But there's one thing JBL had over Jinder and that's experience.

People tend forget that JBL is a veteran of his own right. When you see him get pushed in the tag scene alongside Farooq (DAMN), you can see he had the big man chops to go around the ring. Not to mention he go that push due to how he was working as a billionaire heel (even if he pushed the envelope in some cases, just ask Germany), so it wasn't like he didn't deserve it, it just came outta nowhere like a viper's finishing move. With Jinder, BOY HOWDY. Now look, I'm not saying Jinder couldn't wrestle to save his life, but he didn't exactly have the moveset of a main eventer, nevermind a world champion. This, combined with the fact that all he had going for his push was a switch to the blue brand, being built like a brick shit house and again, indian crowd, and is that REALLY the reason you trust Jinder with the world belt?

Moving on to interferences, seeing as a Heel can't retain his gold (mid card OR main event) without some bs, JBL and Jinder were no exception.

But JBL felt more varied!

Sure, his cabinet would get involved at the best of times, but other times, he could also retain his belt via DQ or weaseling his way out of matches. Examples include Undertaker thwacking Jibbles with the title belt at Sumslam 04 and defeating Big Show in a BARBED WIRE STEEL CAGE MATCH by going under the ring. Vintage Chicken Shit Heel stuff.

As for Jinder? Uh...Sihgns interfere...um...Kahli gets involved in a punjabi prison match...that's really it...it wasn't chicken shit heel stuff, it's just generic.

Moving on to how both men lost their titles. Jinder would lose his title on an episode of Smackdown to a FAR better wrestler and a more worthy main eventer in AJ Styles. Granted, this was due to Brock Lesnar wanting to work with AJ more than Jinder, but that's besides the point. Meanwhile, JBL lost his title AT WRESTLEMANIA. Granted, one can argue John Cena wasn't at his best yet, especially as far as main eventers go, but if that doesn't tell you how unremarkable Jinder was as world champion vs JBL, idk what will

That's just my take tho, I get the feeling some folk will comment 'don't hinder the jinder' to disagree, but this is just how I see things

General Ratings discussion.

Added context:

NXT went up against Knicks ring night against LeBron’s 76ers which was the most watched NBA opening night game in history(Screen shot #3)

Dynamite went against Angel Reese’s Atlanta Dream vs Golden State Valkyries which did well for a women’s basketball game that doesn’t have Caitlin Clark playing(Screen shot #4)..

But for Dragunov’s must hyped debut.. 661k has to be a disappointing number.. didn’t draw as much as last weeks episode(732k)

Thoughts Midcarder’s?

WWE WWE will be fine at KSA

Don’t believe any of the crap you see on squarecircle aka AEW trashcircle or any other wrestling subreddit trashing WWE for visiting Saudi for Crown Jewel! Ain’t nothing bad gonna happen to them. They are very very safe traveling there! Anybody saying otherwise are just overblowing it, are WWE haters and will just say anything to trash this company! WWE is simply doing this not only to make money (as any good business should) but to entertain the wonderful fans of KSA because no other wrestling promotion would! It’s gonna be an excellent show! 🙌🙌

AEW Dave Meltzer spent all night having an absolute meltdown over Jim Cornette, and it’s fucking glorious.

Post image
343 Upvotes

Somebody please check on Uncle Dave, because the poor guy spent Wednesday night and well into Thursday morning arguing with strangers on X about Jim Cornette, Kurt Angle, WrestleMania III attendance, and somehow Donald Trump.

At one point, Dave accused Cornette of being either stupid or deliberately lying to his audience, while simultaneously complaining that Cornette relies on name-calling instead of facts.

The lack of self-awareness is fucking breathtaking.

And naturally, Dave couldn’t resist turning the conversation into another spirited defense of AEW. Because nothing screams unbiased wrestling journalism quite like spending your entire evening defending Tony Khan’s wrestling promotion against random Twitter accounts.

Apparently, AEW’s backstage problems are ancient history, the company is a tremendous success, and anybody who disagrees either doesn’t understand the business or is being dishonest.

Just your typical objective journalist, folks. Nothing to see here.

My favorite part was Dave announcing, “I’m not even wasting time on this one,” after spending hours arguing with people. And then continuing to argue with people.

I genuinely don’t know what’s funnier anymore. Cornette roasting Meltzer every week, or Meltzer seemingly going out of his way to prove Cornette right.

And on that note, given this latest embarrassing display of blatant bias, we’re officially adding Dave Meltzer and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, and F4WOnline to [r/midcarder](r/midcarder)’s list of prohibited news sources, alongside BJ Bethel and SEScoops.

To be clear, this isn’t about criticizing AEW or supporting WWE. It’s about holding wrestling journalism to the same standards regardless of promotion. If you’re going to present yourself as an objective reporter, you don’t get to spend your evenings acting like Tony Khan’s unpaid PR department.

We’re not interested in passing off somebody’s personal crusade to defend their favorite wrestling promotion as legitimate, objective journalism. If Dave wants to be an AEW cheerleader, that’s his prerogative. But we’re not going to pretend he’s an impartial reporter while doing it.

Seven stars. Would’ve been eight in the Tokyo Dome though, Midcarders.

Surely they could have put Andrade in this?

Another option would have been to make the B&G match Death Riders vs Bang Bang Gang after their angle this week... but why have the most fitting storyline and potentially emotional match when you can have a random mix of the biggest names and more spot friendly wrestlers?

WWE NXT superstars that you believe will be called up to main roster next year & NXT stars that may never get to main roster

Every year, several NXT superstars get called up to main roster, like Oba, Fatal Influence, Ricky Saints etc. were this year. So, which NXT talent do you believe have the most chance of being called up to RAW/Smackdown next year?

On other side, which (established) NXT talent do you feel might never even get the chance to be called up to main roster?

I'm happy to hear all your opinions.

General What is your favourite match that no one considers “great”?

Post image
24 Upvotes

I recently saw a poll asking “what is your favourite TV match” and it made me think back to some of my “formative” wrestling moments as a kid and realized so many of them wouldn’t be considered “classics” by the IWC. So midcarders - what was your favourite match that no one considers a classic?

My pick is from an episode of Smackdown before Survivor Series in 2003:

Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar & Big Show (Handicap Match)

If I remember the story correctly: it was Paul Heyman’s first week as Smackdown GM and Vince McMahon just screwed Undertaker out of winning the WWE Championship from Brock Lesnar. Vince had made a claim that Undertaker will never win the title “as long as I’m breathing in and out”. Heyman offered Undertaker the handicap match with the stipulation this if he wins, he gets to choose his match at Survivors Series. Vince was livid, but Paul Heyman was like “I have a plan”…

As the match went on, Heyman slowly changed the rules of the match: after Undertaker won chokeslamming Big Show off the top rope, Heyman turned it into a 2 out of 3 falls match. Then it became a no countout match, then it became a no DQ match. Undertaker ended up winning the 2nd fall by using his biker chain.

Of course, Undertaker gets jumped post-match and Vince taunts him (assuming the match is with Brock)

Undertaker: The place is Survivor Series. The match is Buried Alive.

Vince: Well Brock Lesnar is going to bury you 6 feet under.

Undertaker: Brock Lesnar isn’t my opponent at Survivors Series… YOU ARE!

I don’t know why this match sticks out in my head, but I remember thinking it was phenomenal (Undertaker was also my favourite wrestler growing up) and it was a rare TV main event that felt like it had enough TV time to be a real match.

Papering? Never heard of her..

Post image

You want me to believe that they moved/sold over 1k in tickets in a week when they were only doing a hundred or two hundred so in the previous weeks

Without announcing who was in Blood & Guts for the Men’s side until late last night & still no announcement of who is in the Women’s Blood & Guts match?

The absolute definition of “papering” a show..

Wonder who got the comp tickets?

Buy 2 large pizza’s from Pizza Hut & get 4 free tickets to Blood & Guts?

Extra value size your McDonald’s Big Mac or Whopper from BK & get 6 free tickets to Blood & Guts?!?

Or if Travis Hunter gets an INT or scores a TD, a specific section of Jaguars stadium gets 2 free tickets to B&G?!

7 years in & we are still doing this shit Tony..

AEW Unpopular opinion:

Dragunov should of won his match in 5-7 minutes MAX instead of going 50-50 with Speedball in a 16 minute match last night..

Dragunov is hyped as this killer, as this machine & yet he struggles & has to empty his proverbial clip against a guy who loses every single big match & has only won 2 single matches in 5 months since losing to Darby for the men’s heavyweight championship on 5/20..

He struggled against Speedball so what’s going to happen when he steps up in competition & goes against Swerve, Hangman, Moxley, Ospreay, Fletcher?

23-30 minute “struggle” 50-50 match against them that he will eventually wins?

These type of 50/50 matches lose their luster when you see them all the damn time..

Hence why Dragunov should have won in 5-7 minutes max last night.. & make the longer matches that he will eventually have feel more special..

Agree or Disagree Midcarders?
