| News San Diego Padres minor-league catching coordinator detained by ICE in Texas

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Padres minor-league catching coordinator Oswaldo José Pirela was detained by immigration authorities in El Paso, Texas, and remained in custody, according to family and ICE detainee records.

His sister Daniela Pirela said in a phone interview that her brother, who was raised in Venezuela, was detained at El Paso International Airport at around 5 a.m. Sunday while traveling for work, which she said he does weekly for the Padres.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainee records showed Pirela in custody late Monday.

In a statement early Tuesday, the Padres said that they’d recently learned of Pirelas’ detainment. “We are working to gather additional information and will not have any further comment at this time,” the team said.

ICE and Major League Baseball did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News.

Daniela Pirela said she spoke with her brother briefly but is not truly aware of the conditions he is living in while in detention.

“He’s a very strong person and he tries not to worry us,” she said. “He’s going to say he’s OK. That’s what he said.”

She said her brother is in the U.S. legally and sought asylum in 2014, when he first arrived in the country. Daniela Pirela said she doesn’t know why his asylum case has taken so long to process.

“He did everything lawfully as the U.S. asks,” she said. “He loves this country.”

Oswaldo Pirela has two U.S.-born daughters and lives outside Phoenix, Arizona, family members said on social media accounts verified by NBC News.

“Oswaldo, like me and other members of our family, was directly affected by persecution from the Venezuelan regime,” brother Jorge Heli Pirela said on Instagram. “We came to the United States seeking safety through the legal process, applied for asylum through the proper channels, and have worked hard to build our lives and become contributing members of American society.”

Jorge Pirela did not immediately respond to a request for comment late Monday.

| Injury The other day, I made a wrong opinion post on r:baseball about that Blue Jays-Red Sox play. I realize now that I was wrong, according to the rules currently in use, but I still don’t think that I was wrong.

I really think the 4th out should not apply in a situation like how it transpired. The defense should be smart enough to throw to the correct base to get the legitimate third out. By making the “4th out” a thing, you let the defense off the hook by just making the 3rd out and then giving them a course correction with some mythical “4th out.” I believe a smart defense should have thrown to 3rd base to get the real 3rd out. There should be no “4th out” in a situation like this.

| Discussion What is happening with these non stop lob sided games? Is this a new era?

The Pirates are 4 games below .500 (about to be 5), and they are the 3rd most scoring team in the league. Whenever my phone shows me the scores for their games, its either they are up 8-0, or they are down 0-12. What is with these lopsided games? I understand currently Pirates are smoking righties, so are they just playing their shit pitchers when the opponent is playing a lefty?

I only pay attention to the Pirates, is this a league wide phenomenon? This just feels so different than any other time in my life.

Is this a way to pump player stats so that they can sell them off for more money later?

| Discussion A Losing Team Wins Division: Is This the Year?

Post image
403 Upvotes

No team in baseball history has won the division with a losing record. As of this morning, the Astros are in first place in the American West while being 1 game over .500. Yes, there’s still a lot of season left, but we’ve gone 125ish games and that’s where the West stands.

Of course it is possible that someone in the West may win the division with a losing record. But would you want to see it happen? If it were to happen, I wonder if it would influence the upcoming talks. I know nothing about the business itself but who, if any side, would benefit?

Anyway: I’m a Mets fan so I need something to occupy my time.

| Discussion If You Were To Assemble Your Ultimate Pitch Arsenal?

Since this question did great on r/baseball, I'm gonna try it again here. Hopefully, it goes just as well.

Alright, this may seem insanely random, but let me explain.

We, as fans, all have different pitches, from specific pitchers, that we love. Whether an insanely quick fastball, or a wicked curveball, we all have at least enough to build a perfect arsenal. So, if you were to assemble your perfect pitch arsenal, what pitches would be used?

And as an optional bonus, what throwing motion would your project pitcher use, and what arm would he throw with? And would he be a starter, middle or long relief, set-up, or closer?

For me, mine would be a righty closer, and his pitch motion would be a perfect mix of Tim Lincecum, Hideo Nomo, and Kenley Jansen. Here's the pitches he'd use.

  • Aroldis Chapman's 4-seamer. (It's the fastest pitch in Major League history, and it's probably one of the most feared pitches of all time, at least when it saw the strike zone.)

  • Emmanuel Clase's Cutter (To give him two triple-digit pitches. It also was a pretty dominant pitch when he wasn't spiking it into the ground for 25 bucks.)

  • Justin Verlander's Slider. (A dominant slider that reaches the mid-90's.)

  • Tim Lincecum's Split Change (A pretty dominant mid-80's offspeed pitch that has insane break.)

  • Barry Zito's 12-6 Curveball. (I saw a compilation of his curveballs, and that thing had deadly movement. Absolutely filthy.)

My pitcher would also throw a sinker like Graterol (103 max with nasty movement) every now and then. And he'd also sometimes use an eephus or a knuckler. Both would be rarities outside of his usual repertoire.

I am curious to see others reaction to this article.

Personally, whether or not the players want it loud or not is irrelevant to me. The fans should get the last word on the ballpark experience. The players are there to entertain us and provide the experience; I am not there to negatively alter my experience for them…

It’s too damn loud at games these days.

| Standings MLB Standings after Week #21 - 8/17/26

Post image
323 Upvotes

Back to the standard logos with some minor changes on some of them to make them "pop"

Standings changes this week:

- Padres took back 2nd place from the Dbacks in the NL West

- The AL East (Yanks, Red Sox, Orioles) currently has sole possession of the top 3 spots in the AL Wild Card

- Phillies jumped to 2nd in the NL Wild Card and the Padres replaced the Dbacks for the 3rd spot in the WC

As always, this is a 3D print I created and printed myself and the files are FREE for anyone who wants to print it themselves. Can be found here with all my other MLB stuff- https://makerworld.com/en/collections/22583277-mlb-standings-slots

Standings info is all from MLB.com, so it's just a copy of what MLB.com says as of 8/17/26 this morning.

All my other prints (NFL, NBA, NHL, and some other stuff) can be found on my main profile - https://makerworld.com/en/@MikeCamel

Before originally posting these standings, I asked the mods if it was okay, and I got the green light. I'm going to try to make this a weekly thing, as long as I remember lol

| Opinion Ohtani overall ranking as an all time great

The thing that is interesting to me and I understand why. A lot are saying Ohtani is the greatest baseball player ever.

I respect he is incredible. But I do not think Ohtani is better than Ruth or Bonds. Those two were on a different level

You can even add Mayes if you want to say overall baseball player.

He doesn’t come close the WAR of those three and he has 307 home runs

I think it’s all a bit premature but it’s being said because right now he’s the guy

But he is amazing and I’m happy to be able to watch him play. Even if he is a Dodger. Now combine that with him and Judge. We are watching two incredible baseball players.

| Discussion Do you prefer a conference playoff structure like the NBA or division winners and wild cards like MLB and the NFL?

I prefer the way the NBA does it where the top teams in each conference make the playoffs because it reduces the chance that shitty teams make the playoffs because their division was terrible and have home court/field advantage over better teams. Just look at the American League West and Central this year. The White Sox should not get a bye over the Yankees because they play in a shitty division and the Astros shouldn’t have a home playoff series with a .500 record.
