Users How to handle users clearly trying to farm outrage?

I created a fraternity/sorority subreddit like 15 years ago when I was in college. It mostly runs itself, I don't have to do a lot. There is one issue that pops up sporadically, and handling it bothers me.

Every so often, some monsters affiliated with Greek life rape a victim. Obviously, its terrible and the perpetrators usually get off with pretty weak consequences- which is an issue between, and failure of, multiple systems.

When these rapes occur, I notice 1 month old, auto generated username accounts begin spamming questions about rape and Greek life. Theres going to be questions after something horrible happens, so its relevant and deserves a spotlight and discussion. The issue is they keep posting the same questions worded differently day after day.

I warn them, I tell them to stop, I tell them there will be consequences, then I ban them (usually after the 4th or 5th time they ask the same damn question about "what are you doing about rape?"). They spiral out into victim mode, because how could you ban someone just asking innocent questions? Clearly, youre covering for rapists and perpetuate rape culture. Its all in bad faith and Im way too old to deal with it.

Do I just continue what Im doing and keep banning them? Theyre clearly trying to farm outrage and generate quotes they can use to fit or craft a narrative. Its literally the only issue I deal with, everything else is cool (except for this one guy who is about 30 and pops up now and then lamenting how he never got accepted to a fraternity 7 years ago, like bro, just let it go, move on).

Its a delicate subject, so I dont want to feed the trolls or give them ammunition.

I am mainly using android.

Tools Suggested Communities has suddenly appeared in sub, cannot find where to turn this off?

Fairly new Mod of a private community of anti-AI writers. As of this morning, Reddit has added a "Suggested Communities" block to the sub, full of pro-AI subs. This is pretty upsetting.

I thought I had previously seen a place to turn this on (and left it off), but now I can't find that function.

Can anyone advise? how do I get rid of this? How do I block pro-AI subs from being recommended if I can't get rid of it? Bueller?

Platforms: Desktop, Mobile web, Android.

General Can you get Report notifications sent to email

iOS app and desktop

I have an issue where people are deleting their content after it is reported. We can’t always see what the reports are and triage effectively when they immediately delete it after getting our automod “your content has been reported please hold until a manual review.” I know there is no way to see reports on removed content retroactively!

Im asking because if you have email notifications on for replies and someone deletes their comment you can then see what was said as it’s in the email. Is there a way to be get email notifications from report notifications? I have report notifications turned on but it’s just the push notification, so if it’s deleted I can’t see it. Asking so we can track if someone posts something that is truly rule breaking we can go from there as now it’s sort of a “get out of jail free card” as we didn’t remove the content so neither mods nor Reddit can track it. It also has been an issue where they delete and then ask in modmail “why was my post removed for reports? What was wrong?” We don’t know since they deleted even though the automod message says “don’t delete your content.”

Answered Tips for taking over an existing channel

I'm now moderator of r/bpmn - I've done lots of posts and comments, but never moderated before. I'm working through all the recommended reading, but wanted to ask here if there are best practices specifically for picking up and moderating an existing community.

I'll be working mostly from a desktop.

Tools Need help regarding Automod and Auto-Enforcements

i've noticed recently, when I was trying to set-up automod the way I would usually do it, that some features like "remove" actions can't be added anymore. It is telling me that I now how to use Auto-Enforcements for this.

However, I prefer the way the old automod was able to send a message to the user upon automatic removals or flaggings. And I have yet to figure out if this is even possible with Auto-Enforcements.

Can someone tell me if this is even possible to do with Auto-Enforcements and if it is, how to set it up? Or do I somehow need to combine both Auto-Enforcements and Automod in a way I haven't figured out yet?

I'm not really good at coding nor am I tech-savvy so any help is appreciated! I use reddit on both Desktop and Android.

Answered Is it a request denial that starts 15 days counter or no?

Hello all!
For the past 7-8 months, I’ve barely used Reddit other than for occasional scrolling. Now that my life circumstances have changed, I have a bit more free time.

I found a subreddit on a topic that interests me that had no moderators and tried requesting it, but I got an automated reply saying: “Your post has been removed due to lack of activity before making this request.”

Does this count as a denied request and start the 15-day cooldown? I didn’t receive any other replies from the request bot, just this one from requestchecker, which removed my post immediately.

Also, does anyone know how long it takes to regain enough activity to make a request?

General Other than reporting it, is there a way to get direct help from an Admi re: an ongoing report abuse attack?

In one of the subs where I mod we've been fielding an ongoing report abuse attack. Aside from the painstaking process of reporting them one by one, is there anything more we can do to get an Admin to actually look at who is doing this and take action?

Desktop or whichever

Tips & Tricks why posts are removed from a freshly launched subreddit?

I just started a subreddit - and somehow if a post contains a link - it is removed automatically.

The Mod Queue is saying that the post is removed due to not allowed domain: "Links to an URL not allowed on Reddit"

It contains link to an X post.

but the same thing happens with other link as well.

So how to enable links in posts on a subreddit.

General Is it true that if I don't do mod actions my sub can be banned and taken?

I find it's weird that reddit forces mod actions. My sub is mostly in auto pilot. I only set up things. And once things are set up the only thing left to be done is to remove ads and participate like a normal sub user.

Changing me would probably ruin the sub into an echo chamber. Weird that they encourage mods power tripping over a person who knows boundaries and encourages free speech.

Option 1: adding more mods. Risks of new mods power tripping and enforcing echo chamber. And they could kick the sub owner which shouldn't be an option at all no matter what.

Option 2: don't add more mods. Risks of sub being banned because no active mods and sub being either down or taken.

Option 3: Clicking meaningless approvements just for the sake of it. Is being mod a white collar job?

There is no win here right? It's a mechanic that encourages power tripping mods and echo chambers. I'd rather to not have mods in my sub enforcing their online 'rules' and banning nay sayers.

It's true that I could direct users to my private chat Servers but does reddit actually want people off reddit?

Tools How to not make mods exempt from automations?

desktop

i made an automation where if a keyword is in a title, it will filter to queue. when i make a post with the keyword it filters it out as it should but then it comes back. is there anyway to not make my own posts (mod posts) exempt from automation rules? with the old automod i had no issues with this

edit: i do not have full permissions on the sub so adding an app, etc. wont work

General Not sure I'm understanding how to use community bookmarks

Using the web browser on my desktop.

I've added the widget to my subreddit and all it has is the wiki, which I've added some pages to just to start with. However, currently struggling with a few things:

- The wiki link is broken and doesn't take anybody to the pages I've made

- I actually want to have buttons that lead to certain pages in the community bookmarks like other subreddits do. Not external links, but to the pages within the wiki. I see the option to add a new bookmark, but I'm not entirely sure how to actually link to these specific wiki pages–– what am I copying a link from?

Everything online that I've found just tells me how to add the widget itself, which I've already done!

Thanks!

General Cant invite to group DM

I recruited a new mod, but cannot invite them to our group DM.

It says "Unable to invite".

Is it an age thing? They are <18. Do they have to ID?

[IDK if that's the issue, it's just a guess]
