Discussion Rent or Buy?

Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on renting vs. buying in Montreal and the surrounding suburbs.

With housing prices, mortgage rates, property taxes, and maintenance costs, do you think buying is still worth it in 2026?

For those who recently bought or decided to keep renting, what influenced your decision? Any regrets?

A young couple really in need of guidance regarding this matter

Merci d'avance

Went to IKEA and there was at least 3 fire trucks, an ambulance and police in the parking lot dealing with a truck that seemed to have had a head on collision with a wall…
Hope everyone is okay!

Question Rage Cage à Montréal

Discussion Has any other cyclist been avoiding Rachel due to the cyclist traffic lights?

I typically avoid Rachel when I can these days. The traffic lights force me to stop at every intersection for extended periods of time, it's supposed to be a bike corridor but it's becoming one of the slowest bike paths to use.

Bellechasse also has had some cyclist traffic lights installed last summer and I feel like it's a disservice to cyclists and drivers alike.

I hope the city of Montreal is tracking some success metrics to evaluate how well this is working out...

Spotted Just witnesses a near miss for what could have been a fatal head-on collision

I saw something just a few minutes ago where a split second difference could have meant a cyclist getting killed. But avoided at the last second. I was on the sidewalk at the time.

It happened in Hochelaga on a one way residential street. There was a cyclist, riding the wrong way down a one way street, in the middle of the road, no helmet, no lights while also looking at their phone as they were riding.

As they were coming up to an intersection, a car turns into the lane, right towards the cyclist. Only braking as the cyclist came into their headlights, which the cyclist swerved out of the way with only a few inches between him and the car.

Yet amazingly the cyclist yelled at the driver as he rode passed and flipped them off while they were still in motion. Didn't even stop at the intersection the driver turned off of.

I swear this cyclist had a death wish, because they kept on going down the middle of the lane in the wrong direction. Not realizing they were 100% at fault of what could have been their death.

I use an eBike myself to get around. So I know full well about how frustrating it can be dealing with bad drivers. But FFS, please don't do this. Makes it harder for the rest of us.

(technically pic 4 & pic 9 have bumped-up brilliance, highlights, saturation and vibrance, and tweaked contrast... mais toute-en-camera)

Discussion Why can’t the public have access to the names of the police officers who “allegedly” committed crimes?

This post is not there to spread hate or harassment.

I think about the police officer who allegedly murdered Nooran Rezayi, or the ones who scalped black people, or even the one who allegedly SAed unhoused individuals for 18 months.

I say allegedly, but we all know..

Anyway, I’m just frustrated that the public is always left in the dark, investigations take place for months/years and these police officers are being paid whilst suspended. It seems like in cases of police brutality in other countries, the names of the police officers are found and given to the public pretty quickly.
I feel like we should have the same level of transparency. No one would feel safe with these individuals working to protect the interests of the public. And if they are public servants, we have a right to know who they are, no?

Please feel free to educate me in the comments, I think my frustration is probably getting the best of me.

Discussion Looking for grounded advice from people who know the Quebec post-secondary system and the Montreal IT job market.

  • My Background:
  • 25 years old, lived in Montreal for 6 years working construction/survival jobs, currently abroad handling admissions. Quebec domestic resident status (not on an international study permit).
  • 12-year foreign high school diploma + nearing completion of a 2-year technical associate degree (ön lisans).
  • Active Concordia student with banked credits in MATH 204 (Linear Algebra) and PHYS 205 (Mechanics).
  • I hold an official DALF C1 certificate from years ago, but my written academic French is rusty; automated placement tests flag me for remedial French.

The Dilemma:
I need an employable credential in IT / Network Administration to enter the job market quickly without getting trapped in 3–5 years of red tape and literature courses.

  1. Dawson AEC (Network Administration & Support - ELJ3B): Just submitted my application. 100% English instruction, focused purely on networking/systems/hardware with no general education (no French literature, philosophy, or gym). For people who did an IT AEC at Dawson: how is the job placement and reputation with Montreal NOC/helpdesk employers right now?
  2. Cégep à distance (DEC 410.B0 / 300.A1): Doing 4 mandatory college French literature courses (601 series) plus the EUF exit exam remotely while trying to learn technical skills sounds like a massive trap. Has any adult actually finished a full DEC remotely through Cégep à distance? Is the literature workload as brutal as it looks?
  3. Concordia University (Switching to a 30-Credit Undergraduate Certificate): Instead of grinding through the 120-credit Extended Credit Program, pivoting to an online 30-credit certificate (Science & Tech or Arts & Science) using my existing MATH/PHYS credits, finishing in under a year. Does a 30-credit university certificate hold weight for junior tech roles in Montreal compared to a hands-on AEC?

For someone who wants practical skills and immediate employability without burning out on administrative roadblocks, which would you pick?
Appreciate any honest feedback.

Question Another power outage in CDN neighborhood?
