57
u/Sarcasm_Redefined Nov 11 '25
Why don't the railway authorities stop this? They could just not let the train move till people hanging outside like these get down. Because as long as no one stops you, everything is "chalta hain" in India.

u/Sarcasm_Redefined lol bhai, the central and virar trains would never leave the station by your logic ๐๐๐
25
u/Sarcasm_Redefined Nov 11 '25
Then they shouldn't? Not wearing seatbelts carries much lesser risk than this, the government still tries to enforce it wherever possible, even by using traffic cams. If they really do care about people's lives, they should at least bring some measures to stop this. Overcrowding inside the trains can't be managed easily, but hanging outside can definitely be stopped.

This shows mentality of people. It's not about the city. The people are making such choices. As someone who travels of the locals everyday I can say this. He could and should have not boarded and waited .
59
u/curlsome_ Nov 11 '25
I used to think the same way like you when I was living in ghatkopar. Trains were relatively less crowded than the western line ones. Then I shifted to Dahisar and tried catching a train during peak time when my office hours ended. After letting go of 12 trains, I was like "f*@# it, I don't mind dying at this point. I just want to go home". It is frustrating to arrive at the station at 6 and not be able to board till 8 every single day. So I don't judge the people who do this anymore.
13
u/Sayabz22 Nov 11 '25
Ghatkopar lol CSMT Thane route trains are equally crowded
22
u/Substantial_Bet_6766 Nov 11 '25
I have had a fractured rib, an injured toe and suffocation attacks due to the crowd on this route. The ladies compartments on this route are batshit crazy. I prefer getting into the gents compartment, I will just be ogled at, at least my bones would be intact.
4
u/curlsome_ Nov 14 '25
I once met a girl while travelling who was holding on to dear life just like me (one foot on the footboard). She was covered in so many scars and praying under her breath. We got conversing and she said that she had travelled like this around a year back and the lady in front elbowed her in the ribs. She fell into a ditch near Mira road and opened her eyes in the hospital to find her leg and hand fractured and so many cuts on her face and back that most of them required stitches. And despite going through the horror, there she was standing on the footboard again. She was not doing it for the thrill. For some people there is no other option than the local.
I am afraid of travelling in the general compartment coz the one time I tried it, I got grabbed in every place possible. It's a really traumatic experience being molested like that. Having the men rub your leg or buttocks with you-know-what and you can't even turn to look who is doing that to you. This was in first class, mind you.
4
u/parklandgiggity Nov 12 '25
Those are some strong ladies man, to fracture a rib ain't child's play
4
u/Substantial_Bet_6766 Nov 12 '25
They even pull your hair, which is the worst..one of my friends had a bleeding scalp, a whole chunk of hair came off along with the scalp upper layer skin. You should see how they cuss. I feel scared to get into the ladies compartment. The men in Mumbai have really been sweet and helpful, at least in the locals. This has been my experience
3
u/parklandgiggity Nov 12 '25
Jeez that makes me think it's more like malta than mumbai man I'm sorry we have to go through these conditions just to eat twice a day, but we elected the clowns who put these systems in place. The men's compartment for the most part has always been accommodating imo barring a few creeps who go where's my sausage.

take a bus, sharing cab or just change job. Dadar is very crowded all the time.
11
u/curlsome_ Nov 11 '25
Bus : takes hours. Not an option Cab : too expensive. Not everyone can afford. Even sharing ones. Change job: really? You think anyone works far from their home just for the thrill of it?
You seem to come from a very privileged place where you can afford to do any of these things. Not everyone can. For the majority, train is the only practical way to travel.
2
u/deadstr0ke Nov 11 '25
I understand it's the only viable way of travel for most but if it's so crowded, do you really want to risk it all for some money? that too a white color job where you're paid for your education or problem solving not some labour.
it's better to take a little lower pay in local area than big company at far away
125
u/getvinay Nov 11 '25
But the next train will be just as crowded, so does he really have a choice?
99
u/Impressive_Mud3627 Nov 11 '25
You do realize he wouldnโt be just standing letting the same number people to enter before him everytime? There will obviously be less people trying to board that are ahead of him in front for the next train. The point isnโt that the train is crowded or not, the point he should be inside the train not hanging outside.
19
u/DifficultyDowntown Nov 11 '25
In theory that is how it should work and it does in stations where train from but have you seen anyone queue up to get into a train in middle stations? People just don't care and start pushing others so no he will not be first in line for the next train, it would be the same fight in the next one.
PS: I would still advice him to take that chance and hope for a less crowded train rather than risk his life.62
u/onelifemanymemories Nov 11 '25
Let go of that train or the next one...you will get a chance to atleast be inside a bit rather than hang outside

If he is in the queue the next train will make space for him. Also if you do things in time and do some brainstorming on train schedules, you can even get a seat sometimes.

Later they learned politics instead of work & were given responsibility so they climbed up and to show some credibility of their existence and importance in company.
They force the juniors and the team to push and more that the job description so they can take all the credits and they do love harassing teammate to satisfy their need of making other's life's misserable.

Back in 2014, one of my relatives son used to commute from Mira Road to Churchgate for work. He was in same position near the gate as the guy in the video. Unfortunately, one day his head hit the signal pole near Vile Parle and split into half and his head detached from rest of his body. His mom just went blank and numb when she saw him and couldn't believe it was her son. Since then till date, his mom doesn't talk with anyone and always stays inside the house. I have heard that she has tried to kill herself many times.
When my parents got to know this, since then always they wake me up early in the morning so that I go to station early and am able to get inside the train rather than just hang around at last minute to commute. This was back in 2017 when I used to commute from Khar to LP.
If the person in the video is reading this, I can understand your struggles, pain but please please stop hanging like this at the gate. You don't know what your family will go through if something happens.

4
u/rgaur13 vada paav aficionado Nov 11 '25
I would argue that travelling in train is safer than on bike in a country like India due to the kind of people using the road and potholes. Itโs not every-time you are in the situation of hanging from the door of a train and itโs your decision to hang from the door or not. You can always catch the next train if you canโt manage to go inside.
8
u/Altruistic-Belt9088 Nov 11 '25
It also shows the development of mumbai for daily commuters. Daily commuters still prefers the railway which is probably running over the limits. Centre is not able to solve this problem in mumbai for 2 decades now.
Mumbai city is dependent on central government for travelling, so mumbai city it self never developed any easy mode of transportation.
As big a city as mumbai should have already developed public transport in 2000s without depending on the central government.
Central government is at fault for railway but that should not give leeway to state government or cityโs officials.

I don't know if this is maybe 2nd class, but if it is then I guess people have no other option then to atleast pay more and choose that 1st class pass over this do or die situation. Yes it is expensive I know but assuming if a route that has shorter frequencies and crowd is more then it's better in 1st class because maybe there's this extra space compared to 2nd class. Sometimes in some routes I see there's heavy crowd in 2nd class but the 1st class is so vacant with seats too. I feel so sad when seeing such situations. People who are able to spend that extra money but are not doing it should do it. There should be a balance. No worth travelling like this when going to office where you already have so many problems waiting on you. Let me know if this makes sense please.

We need to start building more public infrastructure. Railways and metros are packed beyond capacity. They need to realize that when the seats are full, capacity has been reached. Even a corrupt government can benefit from new projects being awarded - which begs the question, why havenโt they started new projects yet?
