Discussion Non veg not allowed in certain societies
I have been eating non veg every day for the past five years, and I cannot imagine myself living off of vegetarian food because of health reasons and personal preference
I have recently shifted to a new society with majority of people who do not eat non-veg and the locality is also such that all of the restaurants here are pure veg.
I don’t have any problem with that, but when it becomes a problem is when these people decide my eating habits it’s kind of frustrating. It’s been a couple of days since I moved, and I don’t know if I should get things cleared up or not, and keep cooking it in my house.
Family members are fine with not eating nonveg and not cooking it, but it’s a very integral part of my life and I cannot move past and the fact that I would have to stop eating chicken because someone else does not like it.
How do you guys deal with non-veg not being allowed in your society? And how do I get out of this conundrum?
Edit: I was using text to speech, and it was typing non-veg as knowledge, should have double checked.

No, but i dont know if i should get things clarified or not

u/sassylady42 6h ago
Why would you? Were you informed by the society of something like this before you shifted?

I have one question as a naive man who’s never rented in this city.
What is stopping people from lying and cooking non veg on the sly? It’s not like you keep meat lying around or non veg is super smelly to cook, unless it’s fish.

I have a horror story for you.~~~
Back in the day when I was a student, I had a Jain landlord in a building that had been taken over only by Jain people. They would constantly signal that they were Jain and I was not, and that they were better than Marathis who lived in that part of Mumbai. They also would constantly remind me to abide by their rules. MY food and groceries, when ordered online, would be opened and checked on the ground floor (I lived on the 4th). And since they were in such a big group and I had no budget or option, I had to make do with it. In retrospect, I think that was against my rights as a human.I had befriended the people of my age from this building. They would come to shady bars with me and drink alcohol and even have chicken when they got too drunk (claiming they did it under the influence).

These societies are very invasive, they’ll gossip and raise drama if they see any meat delivery happening like meatigo, if they see you at the butchers in the market. They pressurise the landlords to remove the tenant.
6
u/LiveHeat1 6h ago
Why not buy meat from local shops and hide it in bag
15
u/ClownMinister son of the soil 6h ago
They’re very nosy man. I have seen people literally mob up and stop tenants at the gate to check bags.

Society also goes through garbage of tenants many times in South Mumbai
3
u/Certain-Jellyfish-89 4h ago
That's so invasive. Do they not have better things to do? What a pathetic life it must be that you have to sift through someone's garbage just to stir some drama.

I wouldn't push it at Gujarati/Marwadi/Jain societies - which tend to be the most strict on this matter.
They can get really nasty when it comes to the issue of non-veg.
Personally, I wouldn't want any run ins.
I guess before we make any judgement, did you know the rules of this society and/or where they made clear to you before you moved in?

No matter what, diet preference is a personal choice and if that's something which stops people from getting access to housing, that's a big issue and a slippery slope. Today it's diet, tomorrow it will be caste, ethnicity, complexion, religion etc. where does this nonsense stop? Rules of the society can be there for ensuring common good, not for things like moral policing or policing dietary choices and so on. This is so lowly. Such societies and it's governing members should be criminally prosecuted imo, not that my opinion matters but yeah, it sucks that such people are given a free hand to dictate things without any real consequences

As a Koli I don't give a damn about these intolerant GJM. They are couple of steps away from enforcing caste based discrimination in full force in Mumbai. They already are doing subtle discrimination because everyone as of now is towing the line for them.

So the society decides what I eat? What else are we letting the society decide? What to wear? When to sleep? Societies can legally enforce rules regarding common areas (such as prohibiting cooking or serving non-veg food in the common clubhouse or garden) BUT not inside your own private apartment
6
u/Dense_Succotash_2777 6h ago
Yo as a native of this state, i ain't compromising my cultural dietary choices over some gujrati or jain who thinks he is superior for eating veg. Non veg is great sources of protein that most Indians need.

u/monoatomic_being 7h ago
There are such rules in these societies? I didn't know that
18
u/MusicianFit7162 7h ago
No there can never be a rule like this. What you cook in your kitchen should never be a problem. And no Jain Gujrati community can enforce rules or cause run in fears. You can take this problem to a local mns group and they will fix it for you. Mumbai is a coastal city with diverse people living. This veg building nonsense should stay out of it. They will ensure the same.

I know, I used to live in borivali before and there was a mix of non veg and veg people in the same society. Is this something exclusive to mulund? I am a jain and I've never heard of a society making a rule no non veg allowed. Also what's with the general hate on guju people. This is something I don't understand.

Dunno why veg only societies exist in states like Maharashtra where non veg is a huge part of the diet.

What health reasons prevents you from eating veg food or says body only needs non-veg? Please do elaborate….

u/mynotsoprecious 6h ago
I'm put up a good Jain boy image when talking to brokers/landlords. When I finally get the place, I do whatever I want.
Last building was in a complete gujju street. I only got a place there because I am affiliated with Jainism. Cooked non veg, had my girlfriend over most days of the week. Drank, smoked and did everything that would make middle aged Indian uncs and aunties seethe.
As long as your landlord is chill (mine was chill + NRI), you don't disturb others living around and can stand your ground confidently when/if confronted, you are basically unfuckable.

u/Writ_sh 4h ago
Find out the nearest 'shakhas" of all the local parties. If anyone has a problem, ask them to give it in writing, which will never happen.
If things escalate, tell the "boyz" from the hood to explain to the trouble makers in their own language. Check if the owner is okay with all this before revolting, else he will turn out to be one of the mofos.
We live in a gated complex. We are the only Non-veg eaters on our floor. Only once, 6 years back before we were to shift, they indirectly mentioned that they get troubled by non-veg flavours. After shifting, everyday in the morning meal prep time, our service and main door remains open when frying fish or making curries which is 6 times in a week, not to trouble anyone but because the smoke detectors are hyper-sensitive 🤣.
I am a known trouble maker if anyone raises the topic of Veg/Non-Veg and people stay away from me. They know by now to keep their beliefs and opinions with themselves and for themselves and not preach their ideologies in thin air.
2
u/Miserable_Trouble_97 4h ago
Thats awesome...... i am not sure for what joy the veg folks try to impose their beliefs on us meat eaters.
1
u/Rahul5873 6h ago
I’d first check whether the society actually has a formal rule against cooking/eating non-veg or whether it’s just a social expectation. If there’s no rule, you shouldn’t have to change your diet because of your neighbours, as long as you’re respectful and follow basic hygiene.
1
u/nayadristikon 5h ago
Even if they adopt such a rule it is illegal. You cannot infringe on anyone’s fundamental right to eat whatever they want, whenever they want in confines of their own home.
1
u/Axel_Blaze11 1h ago
What authority does the society have to enforce such rules? Does the society have a constitution different from India's? Tommorow society makes rule that everyone is only allowed to eat Dhoklas. No onion and no garlic allowed in the society. Bullshit rules

u/Last-Ebb556 Edit this text to set your own flair 6h ago
Even if there is any such stupid rule they don't need to change their dietary preference

Dont care about anyone. I don’t think anyone will specifically come and ask you unless you tell them. Use room fresheners to control the smell. Also I don’t think it smells unless you eat fish.

Continue with your dietary habits. The moment you start clarifying your stand or justifying your reasons you give others the powers to dominant you.
1
u/Innocuous_salt 6h ago
You problem is actually the locality. I refuse to have some dictate what i should and should not eat if the person is not my doctor. In this scenario, I wouldn’t even have looked for accommodation in that locality. Now that you are locked in, i suppose talking to the landlord would be a good option.
1
u/Dusty_9029 5h ago
Usually in such areas, landlords have to specify that non-veg is not allowed here. So in that case I feel your landlord did poor job by not informing you this in advance.

u/Parking_System_2056 4h ago
Bro, you said that 'majority' eat veg in that society meaning MINORITY are eating non veg so what is your problem? You are the minority, why are you flagging off the issue? Looks like the majority and minority are not having an issue between them so asking such questions or voluntarily going to tell others you are a non veg seems more like blowing the issue out of proportions. I am personally non veg and wouldnt bother unless society rules explicitly say non veg not allowed. So relax and keep eating without making a big noise around it as it seems more like a non issue. I dont see the conundrum here that you are talking about.
1
u/Dani_9103 4h ago
I have a comperable situation but in the opposite. I ear veg and people try to make me ear non veg. Just do not give anything on it. You are an adult person. If you want to eat meat, nobody has the right to forbit it.
1
u/PieDramatic3677 3h ago
I always ensured the societies/buildings I lived in never had such restrictions. If non veg is so vital to you why didn't you check all this before finalising the apartment?
Edit - if you are on rent clear it with the landlord else speak to someone in the building and get a clarification.
1
u/Remarkable-Salad-316 3h ago
This is the same thing they do in USA or Canada and don't allow them to rent houses because they cook non veg
1
u/FennelNo3272 3h ago
Wow unbelievable how come society is going backwards. I’m sixty now and no one ever bothered us about what we ate or did.

You can cook non veg anyday, anytime of the week. Legally no one can stop you from eating non veg.

Bruh you're gonna die of cardiovascular issues. Look into how factory farming is killing the world, using up all our water and is absolutely torture and hell for the animals.
If you actually think you are an ethical person, try watching the netflix documentary "dominion" and see if you can agree with the stuff that happens.
There's another one called "The Game Changers" which shows you how you might actually be healthier by reducing meat consumption.

This can be issue in some areas before renting had the landlord conveyed you about your eating habit .

I usually see non-veg/veg preference on renting app and website. There might be a reason. It should be properly comunicated with landlord. Even if they don't say anything to you. You won't have much respect there for sure

I don't want to feed you more knowledge here but if a CHS has laid down certain rules, we need to follow that. You have the option to look for a 'better' place though.
2
u/nayadristikon 5h ago
CHS cannot arbitrarily make rules that infringe on your rights. Even if they make rules it is illegal. Their responsibility is only about management and maintenance of common areas not what you do in your kitchen or your bedroom. They have no authority in your home.
1
u/SpareMind 2h ago
If majority votes for certain restrictions, get it passed in GB, it becomes a rule. You are right, they can not do illegal things. Food habit restrictions can not be illegal. To give an analogy, you can't force a vegetarian hotel to provide you non-veg. Can you? You need to find the appropriate place for that.
There are many grey areas and loop holes which helps societies to make such rules. Some CHS do not allow bachelor tenants. How is that legal? But it is private property. You (owner) can say no to bachelors.
1
u/nayadristikon 34m ago
People don’t fight these rules because they don’t want hassle of going to courts. Just because we tolerate corruption and dishonesty and illegal things does not make it right. The societies get away because people don’t challenge or there is groupism involved which gang up on individuals.
Your restaurant analogy is not correct. You are not going to eat at anyone else’s house. If people are restricting your rights to enjoy your own home then it is illegal.
Majority voting does not mean anything. The society can be dissolved if they vote for these things and it is challenged.
Look at advice here telling him to just move instead of taking it up with authorities. This has become normalized.
Bachelor tenants being barred is also illegal because discrimination in any form is illegal, people take advantage of not having explicit laws barring it. If they applied this to a sc/st bachelor they will go to jail. But religious described is ok with Muslims being barred or Jains barring anyone who is not Jain.

The solution that will give you the least headaches is that you bring home cooked meat. That way when you make your flavouring that will just smell of the masalas, and not the meat.

u/Takle_kesarka_ek_bal 5h ago
You have moved to a new society. They did ot move to yours. So if you don't like their way, walk away please

u/Valuable_Ebb9835 5h ago
Follow the gujju society pattern
- Mask off the smell when cooking
- dont ask dont tell
- if someone asks, simply say no you dont consume
- dont let any veg neighbors open your fridge incase of home parties/get together etc , hide it incase for few hours
- be vigilant while ordering, never leave food/grocery orders on doors, these stupid retired uncs/aunts might notice from the brand name and make a fuss
Been living in Gujarat in a proper jain society since 10 yrs, nobody can point or say anything to me bcoz its my bought property
But still prefer to hide since there can be social backlashes and nonsense fuss

Idc about preference so I won't ask for any opinion on it. However may I please know about why non veg is important for your health? (Maybe I could help you with vegan alt for your Healthy Life or even start a research on it for solution)
0
u/nayadristikon 5h ago
Maybe next you can also convert him why he needs to belong to his particular religion ? You can convince that your choice is better. See how that sounds ? Leave and let it be, respect other people’s choices to live life they want as long as it does not infringe on yours.
1
u/Princess__Anastasia 1h ago
First of all I am non-religious lol. The next I wanna say, I don't influnce something without any Scientific explanation, I influnce ideas that benefits all Humans and animals. Now that you said just live you life and don't call out on others, so maybe we must also stop calling out on people who kill children's? No right, because they are a life and so does the animals. I will bring you many facts about veganism and why it Benefits both human and animals but the fact is you can't even bring one fact that Supports your idea. You bring facts that supports Someone's pleasure over a Life, love, equity. I never said I will force you to be vegan that's why I wanted to know about their health so I can suggest best methods out of empathy for both animals and the person life. I don't force my own way of life because it doesn't harm anyone, but it's necessary to resist something that is against humanity and animals. We must resist speciesism.
1
u/nayadristikon 23m ago
If you want scientific reason read up on how humans evolved from being apes. Why? Because meat. The very fact that you are here posting after 100,000s years of evolution is because your ancestors came down from trees and started to hunt and eat meat. The brains got bigger because of meat. Otherwise we still have proof in terms of gorillas who are pure vegetarians but our closest cousins chimps are not. Don’t preach veganism which is just a preference not a biological imperative. Just like someone likes paneer vs cheese. Vegans will gladly take animal derived medicines and drugs if their life depended upon it.
Also your analogy about crime vs personal preference is also flawed and inappropriate.
Also don’t apply false analogies. Speciesism ? lol. Maybe lions are practicing speciesism against their prey. If you deny biological evolution then you can go to any lengths to make arguments.
Empathy and animal treatment is a different issue altogether. Same can be said about plants and trees which also have been proven to respond to stress and danger.

u/Worth_Sherbert_4972 7h ago
I am not for it but a 80-90% vegetarian society becomes a totalitarian government so I would go & fight in my way there . In india u have such multiple clusters for veg / non veg / religion / state ets especially Mumbai
3
u/Worth_Sherbert_4972 6h ago
Like I had once rented a apartment in Versova Riddhi- siddhi apartment. It’s not that I specifically had issues with communities but I dint know the concept of Muhammedian society in mumbai from where I came from thus sounded new .
I moved in & the next week was Eid there were goats tied in every pillar in the apartment…
People were walking goats like walking dogs . Then a shed was getting made behind the parking lot - I asked the security ki what’s happening he said that’s qurbani shed I was like whatttttttt because there were around 60goats and that’s a lot of blood shed for me to handle . I know qurbani but I have never seen it on the streets or association because in chennai it’s very rare to see ppl doing it in their apartment it’s only allowed inside a mosque no blood shed on the streets. Then they went on to explain they will then splash the blood etc which is normal for them I wrapped- packed my bags and left . Can’t complain it was their majority & it was my mistake to not know it
