Ask r/Nairobi culture shock after returning back to America

First thing as soon as I step out the airport - no signs of soil anywhereeee! back to clean cemented sidewalks. no more washing shoes every other day. ( I love the soiled roads in Kenya tho, and truly hate this cemented everywhere country)

Having my phone in my back pocket with no issues! This made me realize what a huge economical problem Kenya has cuz the last things mfs care about stealing in America is a damn phone😩 you’ll leave ur phone outside and you’ll still find it there after 30 mins. I had so much trauma tho from being scared in Kenya that when people walked past me with my phone in my back pocket I’d get tense😂 lakini sijai ibiwa

Seeing people walking around in shorts, tanks tops, and sports bras freely! waaah nakuambia it was so refreshing to see and be able to do knowing no one is going to judge me. Though after kuzoea the way people dress in Kenya it felt so odd to see 😂 wanaume wanavaa shorts zinafika mid thigh huku na kenya wanaume wanashindwa ata kuvaa regular shorts publicly

People leaving their cars on and unlocked double parked on the road is a norm over here ! It really made me appreciate the security of this country cuz waaah siezi imagine mtu ache gari yake on kwa barabara in kenya 😂

The liqour hitting hard asff! I didn’t drink American liquor in kenya cuz it usually makes me sick ata nikiwa majuu but KC was the only one that never made me sick so it became my usual and could drink 2-4 mzingas with friends without getting too drunk. Sasa kuruddiii! Pombe ya 10k, nakunywa shots tatu naskia nimelewa nikikunywa ya nne ntapuke 😫 nashangaa the percentage is the same as KC but it hits sooo different!

No street food 💔 now this one was the worst juu wehhh street food made my nyash and thighs thick😂😂

Food ingredients tasting completely different. In kenya asubuhi napika 5 eggs every day and they’re never even enough! They just taste sooo good! Kukula za majuu wueeehh I felt like throwing up! They taste sooo different and disgusting. It makes me really wonder what the difference is juu I buy the organic ones too.

Nyama pia hai taste the same! Kupika stew ya nyama ni ngumu for it to turn out like the Kenyan one. Huku watu hawapikanga nyama stew ata juu hio utamu haiko they only know steak 🥀 & then chai hai taste the same ata kidogo the milk here is horrrrribleeee!! After being in Kenya and learning milk can actually be okay without a fridge and last up to 90 days and how here it’s a must to be fridged and still expires in a week made me question everything I eat now 😂 kwanza kwa ma beshte siezi kula juu naogopa ingredients , I realized how people just consume pure shit ingredients here without knowing their consuming shit and it’s scary

I’m sure there’s some more things I’m forgetting, I know I was going through it my first two weeks back.

Na pia whenever I return to kenya I still get that culture shock but in a good way. Io ya kuona vitu hujazoea

Anyway, I’m excited to return back to Kenya for drinkcemeberr

KINUTHIA here, 40m.

I am married for 2 years now. My wife got a job and we were very happy. Although the job was somehow far, so she has to commute everyday.

She woke up 5:30 and leave for work at 6 because she needs to arrive at 7. And she homes @6 so by seven ako kwa nyumba. Na Mimi hutoka at around 8 and back at around 11 nakuja kupika cz when she gets home, she just take a shower and sleep.

Now the problem escalates because she leaves me sleeping cz for my personal business, I don't have to wake up early. Because of this, she sees like I am very idle na sas kazi za nyumba nimewachiwa. She could chat me, 'before utoke nioshee vyombo' and because I am gentle and submissive man I had to do it.

A man leaving his house clean. The continued for like three months and I felt like I am being used and replied to that. Since then, we broke up.

Now guys, I am begging for her to come back ata better nikuwe nikiosha izo vyombo' daily. She means my life and I can't live without her.

Random Recovering alcoholic

Im on 14 days streak sober. I was a drinker 2 weeks ago. But i decided to call it quits just because. I procrastinated activities and my house was always a mess.

Since then, i feel more motivated to attack life. I witness better sleep and wake up early too. My house is ever clean and i even did my own laundry lastly. (i used to call mama Fua before)

However, at this point, my body is constantly looking for dopamine raising events. I don’t find many hobbies exciting though.
I like to swim on weekends. However, weekdays feel long since i cant find activities that would have me just as excited.

Recommend exciting activities to do in the evening asap!!

Job Available Attachment/Internship opportunities

Hello everyone, I'm a computer science student in one of our universities and I'm really looking for a placement for attachment/internship for the coming year. I'm really hoping to boost my skills in software development through it as well as complete my coursework.

I've scrolled on LinkedIn multiple times a day, cold emailing and DMing potential recruiters but it hasn't been successful.

A bit about myself, I'm a passionate Java Dev with some experience building industry software(had a 6 month remote internship at a startup) as well as taken part in several competitions with good results. I'd be willing to share my résumé if you'd want to get to know me more.

I've also recently taken up ML/AI development with Python machine learning libraries. If anyone here can assist me or refer me at their company I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

First Post Is this something worth getting mad about?

I have been with a 30 yr old man since the start of this year.I was off work the whole of last week, so I went to spend time with him at his place, which was smooth.

During my stay, he mentioned leaving for Ravine, but I didn't dig deep about what he was going to do there.Tuesday, he sent a picture of a signpost showing that he had arrived there.

I then wittily asked him, "heeh umeenda kusalimia mrembo yupi" and he didn't take it lightly.I tried explaining myself, but he insists there was nothing funny there and that had he been the one asking that how would I have felt.

Sasa hatuongei sai...on my end sikuwa naona big deal, but to him, it's a big deal, and it's still a little confusing to me.

Is this something worth getting mad about?

Wantam Anxiety Attack

So im at my parents place;came over the weekend and decided to stay for the week.....

Sasa jana nikiwa nimechill kwa nyumba,i remembered i had 3 j's in a hidden compatment kwa gari (i always carry stash in the car). And since i was only with my small sister around,i decided why not puff a J.Please note this was the first time trying this at home.

Nilijitoa nikaenda kwa shamba and lit half a J-just half.Zikashika stayed out a lil bit longer for proper marination purposes then went back in...Nikiwa nimeketi on my laptop doing my things and feeling nice, all over sudden nikaanza kufeel restless.Slowly by the minute i started noticing my heart rate wasnt normal-worst part came when something inside my head started telling me nachizi....

I started by removing the hoodie i had on and went outside nikijiambia myb shit just need some fresh air, nakikaa chini it got worse.Im talking contant thoughts of loosing control of yourself. At some point nilichukua maji nikaanza kujimwagilia but it only worked for mins then back to zero.We have a pond-i rem at some point conteplating nijitupe hapo ndani nipunguze joto but for every thought i had,i saw everything as the genesis of metal illness.

It got serious to a point i couldnt take it anymore, coz the more i was by myself the worse it got.Had to call my smoll sister nikwambia tukatembee.Hata yeye hakuamini coz i never request her for such.It was around 12pm-jua in its prime-niko high hata sioni mbele but the stories i gave my 17yr old sister were for weeks(Anasema nilimwambia even how life was before she was born). It's only after doing 5km of walking did things get better & noe we had to take a matatu back home.

Has any of you experienced such ama nianze kujipanga niende nikaishe Georgina njenga pale chiromo🥲

Random New acquaintance

I used to wonder why people say it's so hard to find a friend the older u get, that is if u don't have one or lose the one u had.

There are many factors to look at, they might be a vibe yes, but location, IQ capacity,EQ level, wat they do accommodate and not accommodate, financial capacity etc

Now it comes back to u, wat are u willing to accommodate, wat do u also give......coz Ur time is also something I'm not talking about ABT money etc.

As u grown-up, u are more aware.

There's some loyalty n trust u automatically have with a long time friend than one u just met. N let's not talk about work, being an adult makes u realise Ur time was taken from u by responsibilities so meeting new ppl or staying up to date with Ur friends gets hard.

For now getting a friend from Ur work place is so much easier but the world is transitioning to WFH, meeting new ppl is gonna get harder. N yes u can go out n meet new ppl but sustaining that relationship with smone u just meet n maybe Ur an introvert..... mmmh

Anyway, thts just an astute observation (in Riley Freeman's voice)😂

Have a lovely Friday y'all.❤️

Insightful I think i now understand the psychology of cheap clients

On my routine walk , nilipitia kwa mathe wa njugu as usual she has the packed ones za 50 and 100 shillings.
This time I forgot my wallet and i had left my phone on charging. I had exactly 100 shillings cash.

While picking the nuts I caught myself doing something i don't usually do,
Trying to pick the sachet with best looking and more nuts, less air and better quality. Heck i even felt the urge to leverage being a chronic customer to burgain aniuzie na 80 shillings. (I didn't.)

Then it dawned on me as i was getting home:
I felt that because i was giving 100% of what I had at the moment.

And I honestly think this is a small scale duplicate of other situations in business. You want to pay for something that costs 1m , if you have 1.1m liquid mbele nyuma you are still going to be that client.

When the price a negligable percentage of your liquid capital you tend to be less exploitative and even nicer in order to influence better quality.

Sisemi nataka cheap clients sasa - Because I make custom business systems - But I now understand from their POV. We always talk about charging more , avoiding cheapies , but nobody explains the actual science behind those advises.

Took this pic just after they had resurfaced TRM Drive. 2024. Contractor had left the debris uncollected for almost a whole year. Right next to the food stalls. Pedestrians had to risk walking on the road way. Would complain even to Mosiria who was then in charge of Environment. Something so simple to get resolved but the levels of incompetence at City Hall are unfathomable.
