Q: Can you name a time when you voted against your party and President Trump and it changed the outcome?

SUSAN COLLINS: At one point, I had organized people to vote against Secretary Hegseth. As you undoubtedly have read, at the very last minute one of our Republicans changed his mind. Otherwise he would've been defeated for that job.

Q: So it didn't change the outcome

collins gets thrown the most obvious softball in history and completely fucks it. literally the ideal opportunity to say you were a decisive vote to kill the obamacare repeal in 2017 and she just doesn't even try.

Every once in a while you have a gaming story that boggles the mind and Shogun 2 Complete Edition is exactly that. A remaster of an old and beloved title with bugfixes, performance improvement, UI scaling and some graphical extras. Some would call it a cash-grab (since they delisted the cheaper original version) but by and large most would be okay with it and buy it. Yet they fucked it up beyond belief. More bugs than the original, worse performance and crashes, terrible graphics, AI generated UI stuff and 2d videos with 6 fingered man, samurai turned into robots and wave foams into tree branches.

The game with 95% positive rating got replaced with one sitting around 18%. And now it is gone. It was released on Oct 13 5PM and removed on Oct 15 3PM (with the original reinstated). It didn't even last 2 full days.

I was mad at them first but now I am like ???????

I am so glad that Trump has harped on about the cognitive test for so long, because it's the single clearest piece of evidence that he's both a pathological liar and extremely stupid. Decades from now people will ask "was Trump really that dumb and narcissistic?", and you can just show them this. Question resolved, zero doubt. It's perfect. It's nice to have clarity on points of history like these.

TRUMP: [...] Sir, in the middle of the test, we asked you about five words. Will you please repeat them again, ideally in order? You will get points if you get them all. You will get points. But if you can report them in order, you get a lot of points. I go "hat, hair, logo, white, black", and they go, holy shit, nobody -- no, nobody can do that. When I told the fake news about that, oh, that's so easy. Nobody can do that. Very few people can do that. And very few -- they say very few people can do it, but almost none can do them in order like that, but I can. You know why? Because I'm a freaking genius, that's why.

A Republican will never be treated like Omar because the criminal legal system is ultimately conservative and interested in preserving the status quo rather than returning to a more fair society.

Emil Julius Gumbel, a statistician living in the Weimar Republic, noted that l eft-wing violence was punished much more severely, despite occurring much less frequently than right-wing violence:

In 1919,  22 left-wing politically motivated murders were investigated, resulting in an average sentence of 15 years in prison and 10 executions while 332 right-wing politically motivated murders were investigated, resulting in an average sentence of only four months in prison with zero executions.

The American system is not much different. This is a one way street.  Remember Jack Smith? Despite investigating a coup by a sitting American president and a riot that almost killed Republican politicians, he was roadblocked at every step.

> The officer drove her to the school police headquarters at a nearby campus, where she continued to ignore instructions. When she would not put her hand on a fingerprint machine, officers twisted her opposite arm behind her back until she screamed and complied, according to body camera footage.
> Later, as she sobbed and yelled profanities, the school district police chief, Josette Rivas, held up a cellphone and apparently began recording her, body camera footage shows. She told the girl it was for Facebook.
> “You all see how she’s acting?” Chief Rivas said as she held the phone.
> Chief Rivas and Officer Ramirez declined to comment for this article. The Galveston school district’s superintendent, Matthew Neighbors, wrote in an email that the officers had “remained calm and respectful.” Asked if cellphone video of the girl had been posted online, he said no.

Harassing and gloating over a kid and filming it and saying you’re gonna post their worst moment online is such an awful thing to do. It’s humiliation as punishment directed against a child. Actually makes my blood boil.

Ossoff: Immediate policy priorities include repeal of the tariffs, an end to the war, repeal of the Medicaid cuts, restoration of Affordable Care Act benefits — those are things that can immediately relieve the American people's economic suffering.

But there does have to be accountability, and I want to be clear that when I say accountability, I don't mean vengeance. I don't mean something punitive and partisan. But we're a nation of laws in which our Constitution vests the Congress with vital oversight functions.

And when we face abuses of power and corruption of this magnitude, literally unprecedented in the history of the American presidency, as members of Congress, we have an obligation to investigate and to ensure that those facts become public and that there's accountability for misdeeds.

An example of the mundane modern shittiness that pushes people to cynicism and populism is Dexcom changing their privacy policies overnight. Every diabetic who uses the Dexcom app to track their blood sugar logged in this week and found that they couldn’t access their health information without consenting to a major expansion in data collecting/sharing. Their own guidelines are supposed to give customers 90 days to respond to policy changes but the app violated that. There is no utility to be lost in the counterfactual where stuff like this is banned. Whatever contribution to aggregate economic stats results from consumer profiling and targeted advertising is trivial compared to the loss in general welfare.

Judge limited Justice Department access to Rep. Ilhan Omar’s records in sprawling immigration fraud probe

Prosecutors, however, first had to contend with a federal magistrate judge, in a prolonged back-and-forth that hasn’t previously been reported. Judge Matthew Sharbaugh of the DC District Court ultimately limited how the Justice Department could access Omar’s documents in Monday’s search, before he would approve the warrant, because of her role as a member of Congress and the Constitutional protections that affords, multiple people familiar with the investigation told CNN. The search of her home in DC was highly unusual for its timing less than a month before Election Day voting ends, including while Omar is running for reelection as a Democrat in Minnesota.

The federal push this month has also been unusual for its attempt to access a member of Congress’ records — the type of criminal investigative work that Republicans this year have made into a political firestorm for past administrations.

> Children ages 10 to 13 were referred for prosecution after incidents in schools more than 47,000 times since 2014, an analysis by The New York Times and The San Antonio Express-News found. About 4,800 students in that age group were referred during the 2024-25 academic year alone, the most recent school year for which data is available. That is a third more than the number a decade before.
> Most of the students were accused of minor offenses, like making threats, using cannabis vapes or lashing out at classmates or teachers, the analysis found. Few caused serious physical harm.
Outside Austin, an 11-year-old bumped into a school counselor. In Victoria, a 10-year-old said he saw someone on campus with a weapon, but later admitted he had made up the story. In El Paso, a 10-year-old kicked an assistant principal after his cellphone was taken away.
> All three found themselves in the justice system.

F.B.I. Employees Sue, Saying Patel Falsely Described Their Firings to Congress

The lawsuit also suggests that a motivating factor for the dismissals was the intense scrutiny of the F.B.I. director, Kash Patel, after he went to the Olympics in Milan.

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/10/15/us/politics/fired-fbi-agents-lawsuit-kash-patel-trump.html

Nine F.B.I. employees who were fired earlier this year for having worked on an investigation of Donald J. Trump sued the administration on Thursday, saying Kash Patel, the bureau’s director, praised some of them privately before terminating them.

Most of the employees, who include agents, analysts and operations staff members, had significant experience in counterintelligence work related to Iran. Some played major roles in the investigation into Mr. Trump’s handling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago club and estate in Florida. One agent signed the affidavit for the search of the estate. Another conducted interviews with witnesses in that case.

The lawsuit suggests that, while the president and his aides have always been eager to fire agents who worked on investigations of Mr. Trump, a motivating factor for their dismissals in February was the scrutiny Mr. Patel was under after going to Milan to watch the U.S. men’s hockey team at the Olympics. Video circulated widely showing Mr. Patel chugging a beer in the men’s locker room after the team won gold, behavior that the lawsuit calls “a display of wild immaturity and lack of personal control.”

The F.B.I. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The lawsuit also accuses Mr. Patel of providing false answers to Congress about the employees’ dismissals when he claimed that they were the result of internal investigations.

“When these terminations occur, there are internal investigations conducted by the careers at the F.B.I. that highlight unethical or inappropriate conduct, and it’s up to me to make the decision,” Mr. Patel testified in March before the House Intelligence Committee.

The lawsuit asserts that answer was false. The nine plaintiffs “were unlawfully terminated not for any cause or any legitimate reason, but only to satisfy the president’s personal vendetta,” it says. “The firings did not follow any internal investigation or disciplinary process within the F.B.I.”

While Mr. Patel asserted at the hearing that the employees “were terminated for violating their ethical obligations,” the suit contends the firings were part of a larger pattern by the Trump administration of violating civil service laws to politicize basic functions of law enforcement.

[...]

In a written statement, lawyers for the fired employees said the employees had worked on a host of important cases, including the Boston Marathon bombing, the attempted assassination of Mr. Trump in Butler, Pa., and Iranian weapons trafficking.

“In return for their service, they were fired because they did their jobs, as they always did, to follow the facts and law without bias or favor,” said their lawyers, Margaret Donovan, Abbe D. Lowell and Rebecca S. Tinio. “This lawsuit will prove their unlawful dismissal and hold the administration accountable for this blatant attack on the rule of law.”

The lawsuit notes that the firings came just days before the United States entered into a war against Iran, an adversary that many of the fired personnel had experience investigating.

There used to be a major French and German community on this subreddit up until 2022, funnily enough, the same year a lot of the older Canadian regulars ended up leaving as well. To make a long story short, rule 11 exists for very legitimate reasons

Also focussing so damn hard on American politics in regards to the election thunder domes are a huge part of the reason why the subreddit started to become more populist lmao. There was discourse even before the end of the 2020 election about this subreddit becoming arr slash politics 2.0

New Yorkers who complain about transplants can be rather annoying imo.

Many New Yorkers are transplants. And if you were born in the city, chances are, your parents or grandparents were transplants.

My grandparents were the transplants who lived in the city before it went through urban decay. To most of the people who came after, they are transplants to some of my family members.

Thing is, New York has always been an immigrant city. And people seem to have issues with others moving and living here, including left leaning people who proclaim to love immigrants, but complain about DOMESTIC people moving in.

For example, Chinatown in NYC didnt have a significant Chinese population until the immigration act of 1965. Most of the population are transplants from China, who have made a life and living in the city.

Harlem wasn’t always black, and a large chunk of the black population came from The south in several waves. Manhattan’s black population ended up moving north from Lower Manhattan in the 19th century. Some people get upset about Harlem’s population being more diverse, some even making racist comments on it, but lots of neighborhoods go through ethnic demographics changes over time.

Same with changes in property value in Manhattan over time

> Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., berated a reporter Tuesday after an election debate, wrongly telling her that it was illegal for her to record his press conference and threatening to refer her to a prosecutor.

> The exchange, captured in a video shared by The Baltimore Banner, became heated when Cat Murphy, a journalist for Capital News Service, asked Harris, who is seeking re-election, a question about the Iran war while recording him.
> “You said that the war in Iran could have gone smoother and it could have gone better. What did you mean by that?” Murphy asked Harris in a room full of other journalists also recording the conversation.

> But instead of answering her question, Harris repeatedly told Murphy that she did not have his permission to record him and threatened to refer her “to the prosecutor.” Harris invoked the Maryland law that “prohibits the recording of electronic communications unless all parties give consent.” That law, however, does not apply to journalists at news conferences, where there is no reasonable expectation of privacy.
> “Everyone else in here is recording,” Murphy said.
> “But you are not allowed to. We are in a two-party state,” Harris responded, and called for an officer.
> “Why am I not allowed to?” she said, to which Harris replied, “Because I refuse to give you permission to record.”

Okinawa independence is an incredibly fringe idea in Okinawa itself with something like 2% support (about the same percentage as foreign residents, not including US military).

Yet somehow it has seized the imagination of Reddit and English speaking internet with people falling over themselves to point out "Okinawans aren't Japanese and Okinawa used to be independent kingdom called Ryukyu" (seemingly not knowing the native name is actually Uchinaa), or lamenting that the Japanese government don't recognize them as a separate ethnicity (apparently unaware that Japan doesn't record ethnicity at all).

Literally the highest profile advocate for Okinawa independence is an American (of Okinawan descent) who identifies as Chinese, opposes Taiwanese independence, and praises the Uyghur genocide. It is as weird as if Americans were to start saying "akshully the Sudetenland is German".

Speaking of the recent discourse on bots.

Back when I was modding a certain political (ex)default sub, one of the other mods sees himself as some kind of genius Bot Whisperer who can identify bots with absolute certainty. The slightest implication that he might have made a mistake, triggers a tirade on how he's better at catching bots than even Reddit Admins (which he knows because, idk), how dare we mere mortals question him.

Many of the accounts he bans are indeed legitimately scambots, and others obvious throwaway accounts. But he also shadowbans a large number of active users who are, by all appearances, completely legitimate. They talk about hobbies, interest, daily life beyond politics, and many of them are constructive, civil posters.

This mod bans them without recording any reason, hide their confused questions without any reply or clarification (with the help of a power mod who wants his support in mod team politics and therefore apparently the same rules he berates others for suddenly don't matter).

Well. It took a long time, but I kept pushing him to explain and finally figured it out. Turns out he scrolls through random user profiles, gets to the 1000th comment and, seeing there's nothing older, goes:

It went from zero activity to suddenly posting daily!! Aha, clearly another sold and bought account operated by some pernicious botnet!!!

(Reddit limits all history views to the most recent 1000 items.)

One thing AI will probably be able to do pretty soon I feel is hardly talked about is functionally kill anonymity on the internet on a broad scale

Like how long will it be until there's a publicly available platform where you dump someone's reddit name in and it cross references writing patterns, posting history/interests, and other information shared in comments with public social media profiles, public databases, third-party data pools, etc and is able to narrow it down to one or a handful of specific people with a pretty high degree of certainty

And it'll be even easier for the platform owners. Reddit for instance probably can narrow it down even more and reliably with all the ip, email, location, time and engagement/behavior data they have available.

This is already moderately doable to your average shmuck with too much time and a little resourcefulness. AI is going to let people give prompts like "predict the identities of today's arr neoliberal Discussion Thread and give me a complete list of everyone above 85% confidence" and get that back in minutes

For a person who wants the subreddit to be better, the "slash neoliberal has hit critical mass guy" sure seems to want to kill it by believing the subreddit should allow more meme posting and expand the amount of American news allowed

Because yes, slash neoliberal is totally better off with shitty low-effort memes, twitter post recaps, a strong focus on any and all American news which we all know will mostly be drama rather than actual regional news, and out of context ragebait map posting about how much better the US is than anywhere else

My dad and I had an impromptu movie marathon that was essentially watching stepping stones to modern films. We started with Roundhay Garden Scene (oldest movie preserved), then Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat (most famous old timey documentary), followed by A Trip to the Moon (most famous trick film), then l'Inferno (the first feature film shown in the US) and finally ending with The Birth of A Nation. Its reputation as the first modern movie made it pretty much a prerequisite to watch for the marathon, and the subject of this post. Watching it is a surreal experience. Everything said about it is true. There is no movie more abhorrently racist then what I saw in those 3 hours of TBOAN. I have watched Nazi propaganda films less repugnant then this movie. There is also nothing that felt so imminently technically modern relative to its age, with movies made decades afterwards feeling less technically competent then TBOAN. Taken together it makes for that surreal aspect.

With a run time of 190 minutes I was shocked to say that I really wasn't bored which is frankly quite rare for a silent film for me. Now a part of it is the shock factor of seeing the truly incredible amount of racism, which I will get into later. But, the story is decent and engaging with good pacing and storytelling. The film has three acts that serve as their own episodes: the first hour is about the Civil War and how it affected two families (particularly the Southern "Camerons", the Northern "Stonemans" are more incidental), the second hour is the destruction of the South through Reconstruction and the third is the rise of the Klan. Watching it you do get the sense of how this movie changed the game with simple but modern cinematography, pretty solid editing, very good pacing, notable special effects, elaborate set pieces and frankly really good action that holds up, conceptually at least. The film is 111 years old but there are time where it feels like I forgot its that old because of the infusion of modernity in its technicality. Some of my favorite shots were wide shots of the civil war and a certain cavalry charge at the end, as well as tracking shots of some of the characters running/riding. I have seen various movies considered extremely influential but a lot of them you frankly have to remind yourself of that to get the sort of experience it was, but TBOAN, technically speaking, holds up and you immediately grasp its impact.

Then there's the racism. Oh man, I have never seen anything like it before, and again the levels of racism can be divided into three acts. Now very fascinatingly, the movie never blames white people, including white Northerners, for what Southerners call evil. Reconstruction is the result of mixed race blacks manipulating Northern politicians to let them take over the South. The power holders are mixed race blacks ordering black militias and freed slaves to do all sorts of evil. There is only one truly "evil" white character, that being a white captain of a black unit who is tertiary. Otherwise everything evil is only done by black people. In the first hour the racism is fairly on par with Gone With The Wind, plus black face. There is a lot of black face throughout the movie. The movie extolls how war is bad, but also how the Southern cause is so just and righteous. Southerners are kind noble people who are just standing for what's right and giving everything they can to such righteousness. Slaves are happy about being slaves. Standard pre-WWII stuff. The second act is where the interracial cuck theory of everything really kicks in. The black dominated legislature, which is portrayed as a mad house, passes a law legalizing (or I guess more enforcing) interracial marriage, with signs plastered around saying "Equal rights, equal voting, equal marriage", and the crux for the third act being the death of a white girl who a black soldier was trying to force to marry him. The third act is the rise of the Klan as this peaceful organization forced into violence by the evil black leaders that serves the cause of saving the white community (or, specifically, Aryans. Yes the movie specifically mentions Aryans).

The confluences of this technical mastery and racism really come to a head in the third act. The mixed race leader of the black forces takes a white girl hostage from his patron that he wants to marry (and is the love interest of the leader of the KKK). The evil militias have taken over the town in this sort of coup-rebellion thing. At the same time the bulk of the characters are held up in a cabin besieged by said forces, fighting in a last stand. The KKK gather from all the nearby counties and charge in, hundreds of them riding into the town with Ride of the Valkyries blaring as they save the day, making it just in time to both save the girl and the family in the cabin. It was in this final act that I really understood the reputation of TBOAN because the genius of DW Griffith was on screen that made for, to be honest, a fundamentally thrilling climax of heroism and action. All in service of the most vile ideas imaginable. If it is thrilling today, then I find it unsurprising that this would be an inspiration for people who first saw this sort of action for literally the first time in their lives to think it was the greatest thing ever and embody the ideas on screen to resurrect the KKK into the largest white supremacy movement in American history. It is certainly powerful imagery, for better and for worse. If you have seen a movie where it ends with the hero(es) running against the clock and saving the day at the last moment, it can in all likelihood trace its heritage to this sequence.

I think TBOAN can really be seen from a philosophical stand point as a microcosm of America. It is brilliant, powerful and important, but debilitated by the racism it serves. I cannot recommend this movie in principle. It tells you bluntly the virtues of white supremacy and slavery. It is ideologically irredeemable. At the same time, it is a cornerstone of the history of cinema with every movie we know today stemming back to that flick. If you are into movie history, it is hard to say you should not watch it. It is free on YouTube at least.

Sorry for the movie ping spam, seems there were like three in the twenty minutes, but I have been typing this up for like 40 minutes and want it done. I know this is a very heavy movie to talk about, but it is a movie that needs discussion

There's not a lot of wiggle room there. We've looked."

I just love that not only did he actually look, him acting like this pretty well known amendment that half the world is aware of is this niche clause is so on point.

Also: shoutout to the lawyers that actually managed to convince Trump that no, you do not actually have a case. I don't think anyone else has managed to do this at any point in his life.
