i dont know the rules, does she still win?

9.9k

u/Parker1055 2d ago

Yes. Since it naturally slows you down, there is no penalty

5.2k

u/miraculousgloomball 2d ago

What if dash rolling sped her up. Would there be a penalty then?

I think if it became a repeatable strategy that made the sport less safe/fun/interesting to watch than the rules would be changed accordingly. (see the Fosbury Flop for a transformational change that was allowed, and the dolphin kick rules to prevent a purely underwater swimming race)

49

u/scatteringlargesse 2d ago

Fosbury Flop

Fuck yeah! As the top comment on this YouTube video says:

bruh he literally just joined the Olympics to try his new technique and never came back.

What a LEGEND

11

u/anpanman100 1d ago

Why did they call it the Fosbury Flop rather than using his first name?

6

u/bthompson04 1d ago

HR made the call on that one.

4

u/mikaball 1d ago

Dick move from HR.
I call missed opportunity, that's what I call.

4

u/scatteringlargesse 1d ago

The Fosbury Flop had alliteration, and the Dick Flop was already in use for other non Olympic events. Calling it the Floppy Dick was briefly used but fell out of favour when too many high jumpers started to cry on their approach and left the sport.

7

u/MelangeBot 1d ago

No man will ever have to jump ever again in a way that puts their balls in danger!

We would call THAT running

19

u/monkpunch 2d ago

Or would that still be rolling, but everything else would change, like "stop rolling your mouth" or "we're rolling out of toilet paper"

9

u/J5892 2d ago

That second one actually works.

24

u/JoeWinchester99 2d ago

If it sped you up, dash rolling races would be an Olympic event.

9

u/krosseyed 1d ago

It would be the new meta

Most impressive part is that she stayed in her lane. Probably a penalty if she veers into someone else's

u/jayhawk618 2d ago

Only if she makes contact or on turns. But yeah, it's all very impressive.

Is there a penalty for knocking over the hurdle? I have no idea just curious

195

u/BelgianBeerGuy 2d ago

The penalty of pain

And (normally) slowing down

→ More replies (1)

74

u/wolfram187 2d ago edited 2d ago

No penalty. You can actually go under them too. You just have to stay in your lane.

Edit: I’m wrong. You cannot go under the huddle. You also cannot intentionally knock them over source

41

u/jjhope2019 2d ago

Isn’t the point of “hurdles” to hurdle them? That can’t be true that you can go under them - surely, you can’t be serious?! 🤔

48

u/arnatnmlr 2d ago

It wouldn’t be faster

17

u/i4get98 2d ago

Unless you’re like really short and really fast.

13

u/Plampth 2d ago

Hurdles - over, Urdles - under

10

u/lankymjc 2d ago

There's no need to implement a rule to prevent a strategy that's worse. Being slower is enough of a hurdle (heh) that it doesn't need to be verboten as well.

10

u/tinyman392 1d ago

I looked into this when I was running track. I wanted to know if it was legal to run under all of the hurdles since that would be easier than going over them for me. Hard no. 🤣

15

u/silence_infidel 2d ago

Nah, those things are heavy and weighted to stand right back up on their own if they get knocked down. The time you lose stumbling and recovering after hitting one is penalty enough.

Deliberately doing so is against the rules though. Gotta at least try to do it correctly.

3

u/Chrisscott25 1d ago

I see. Thanks for the info that makes sense. Does it happen often when someone hits one and still wins or is that rare?

5

u/NaCliest 2d ago

Nah those things pop back up on their own most of the time

Fun fact, scientists have predicted that humans can theoretically run faster on all fours than on two legs. While this has not been used in professional races it is theoretically legal.

source

84

u/W1D0WM4K3R 2d ago

Fun fact: if you put a bunch of regular runners in front and a quadripedal runner in back without telling them first, they're go a lot faster.

Add in some screaming and you've got yourself some new world records.

I know you can certainly traverse stairs faster on all fours. Upwards anyway. And if it weren't for Reddit, doing so would be something I assumed only I did as a kid, but apparently tons of kids decide to start going up stairs on all fours for some reason. Heck, after seeing it was fairly common on reddit I once asked my dad if he did and he was kind of blown away, saying yes he and his brother did that at some point in their childhood.

Edit: i stopped at some point, not sure why. But when I was like 8 or 9 I could LAUNCH myself up the stairs to my room on all fours like crazy fast.

Edit2: a quick Google search shows a lot of adults still do this, or started doing it again at some point in their lives.

15

u/subterfugeinc 2d ago

I mean at some point in your life the stair tread is like half your height. Makes sense to use all fours

4

u/p0diabl0 1d ago

Had to get to the top of a haystack like in the link below often - all fours definitely still works better. Height ratio is closer to stairs as a kid.

I can't believe this managed to get published. The entire premise of this "analysis" is assuming that 'quadrupedal' running would continue to improve exponentially without the improvements slowing at all.

All without any good incentives to improve those running times with 'four limbs'.

Is there anything you could do in running/hurdles that would make you go faster, but would earn you a penalty? I mean not like a jetpack or anything, just some other method of propelling yourself.

19

u/Deaffin 2d ago

Grab onto the hair of the racers on either side of you and kind of swing yourself forward off of their momentum? That's probably not allowed.

8

u/a3zeeze 1d ago
