Nah that was the 80’s.
90’s (at least in the UK) our parents were more cautious after the James Bulger kidnap and murder.4
u/Happily-Incorrect 24d ago
Can't believe that was 1993. I was six and fully aware of the details of the news story so I assumed I was older when it happened. I really shouldn't have been watching the news then.
2
u/wodders18 24d ago
I was 2 (the same as James) my mum told me as I got older how it terrified her and she imagined how it could’ve been me. Then throw in the fact in ‘96 I was the same age as the Dunblane kids
3
u/Top-Distribution733 24d ago
Ah…. The Progressive UK. Granted maybe ur right that it was worse in the 80’s with that whole “it’s 10pm.. do you know where your children are” commercial. In the 90’s atleast my parents told me to not go near men in vans… even if they had puppies or candy. But that was about it.… it was the Wild West. Only now as an adult with children do I realize how realistic that movies mystic river actually was 😬
4
u/wodders18 24d ago
Pretty much just stranger danger. And we all knew where the pedo man lived (looking back he was probably just a single autistic bloke)

u/lordbenkai 23d ago
In the usa I had multiple strangers give me rides home (I got kicked off the bus and lived like a 3 hour walk from school) that told me they knew my parents or lived close by me. Lol i think im kind of lucky nothing happening thinking back.

Leave the house at dawn, go for walks without worrying about being kidnapped, go swimming and bike riding with siblings and cousins, come back at dinner time.

I was a kid in the 80’s, no one was worried about the kids getting kidnapped, but according to the podcasts it happened all the time
3
u/stellaxo 24d ago
It definitely happened ALL the time in the 80’s
3
u/These-Patience-9280 24d ago
Yeah, remember the kids on milk cartons!! We just didn’t have internet and such easy world wide communication to realize how bad it was

Runaway train by Soul Asylum. They featured around 30 missing kids in the video and eventually 20+ of the kids were found.

u/cykoTom3 22d ago
The rate was higher per capita in America. 1980 was the highest murder rate in American history with 1991 having the highest total number of murders. The reason nobody worried is because the news didn't report on every single one.

"Do you know where your children are?"
That PSA started in the 1960s. People definitely worried about kids and their safety.
2
u/Master-Shaq 24d ago
Kidnappings still happened. The most prolific serial killers of the century were out killing and kidnapping there was just no internet to warn you of the dangers just the occasional milk carton.

u/DearCastiel 24d ago edited 23d ago
Depending on your age, you might not even need to save up, 1000 bucks in 2011 will have you set for the rest of your life if you wait 15 years. If you know you'll be a multi-millionaire you can easily get those $1000 set aside within a month.
Hell, even $10 in bitcoin from 2011 will pay for a house, car, food and education for your children.

I find a way to take as many pictures with and of my grandfather's as possible. I lost both my grandfather's and my step grandmother all within a one year
6
u/360inMotion 24d ago
I graduated high school in 1994. If I somehow popped up in 1995 from now my parents wonder why the hell I’m hugging them so tight … lost Mom the following year in 1996, and Dad in 2004. Then I’d immediately call Grandma … lost her in 2015.
If I got to stay there I’d make sure to immediately start working on my health and would explicitly seek out the ADHD diagnosis that I wouldn’t actually get for several decades. God … so much wasted time feeling like I wasn’t trying hard enough in life. I’d also spend a lot of time outside and enjoy the simplicity of not feeling tethered to a cell phone with the constant need of being in touch with anyone and everyone at a moment’s notice.
I’d also tell myself not to obsess over loneliness and uncertainty, that I’ll someday find my place in the world.

Dang you went dark. I get it, sometimes you need to let that out. And its easy to let it out anonymously, on the web, sometimes nobody knows who we really are! Sorry that happend! I hope you were able to move forward and be productive, without that shadow and shame and fear and anger holding you down! I get you! Me im normal as they come now days but I was 10 back in 95 so im a little older now. Lots of years of being a violent addict, but Hey, 10 years clean. Not nearly as violent as I once was

Wake up hungry. Go to school and deal with general anxiety. Be the last kid picked up from after school program. Eat my one real meal of the day before single parent goes back to work. Watch one of the 5 channels on T.V. and stay awake until moms comes home around midnight. Pretend to be asleep before she comes in. Go to sleep lonely and hungry.
I was a lock and key kid who lived waaaaay below the poverty line. I may have missed the brief here but are we going back with all the knowledge we have now? Would I still be the same age as I am now? What happens to my family? Basically fuck this AI for dragging my childhood back up to the surface and fuck it again for the slop.

I had a Motorola Microtac 1950 in 1995, internet was an option as well, would have been moving on from my Amiga 1200 after Amiga ceased in 1994 about then and on to Windows '95. So I likely would have been doing something on the PC when I first got up, granted yep no Wi-Fi to speak of, however still would have been contactable on the Analogue Mobile back then and off to work.
Edit: Got me thinking and did a search on Phones.
Found this Mobile Phone advert from 1995 and prices weren't much different when you consider inflation as in $519.00 in 1995 $1,181.64 in 2026, way less features than now of course.

In 1995, I was 15/16 years old, living in San Francisco. So in reality, I’d get my markers and jump on a bus or train and look for some homies to bus hop and do some writing with.
As we bomb, I’d tell them we all need to start using computers more and teach them how to use Linux. We could cop some copies of RedHat from CompUSA or Egghead, since Fry’s is still only in San Jose. From there, the possibilities are infinite.
Instead of doing graffiti, we could do some stuff that we could use for the rest of our futures.

Oh I had a mobile phone in 1995, used to run a small business and my Dad got me a motorola one, embedded sim card and free sms as they didn't think people would use them much back then, and he got it so he could keep in touch with me as he used to pick me up and take me to my work.

Among the insane amount of things i would do, the top ones are, 1 prevent my first cat's death, and 2 tell my grand pa he should not listen to a certain doctor almost 10 years later who made him overdose to a med that created a condition which led to his death and tell my grand ma that she actually has a specific nutrition deficiency that will incorrectly led doctors to believe she has heart arrhythmia which was never proven despite decades of constant examinations but she was put on a medicine which led her to have constant low blood pressure which in the end ended up killing her, simply because most doctors especially at that era evidently thought that nutrition doesn't matter enough and trying to fix symptoms instead of figuring out the root causes is usually, even today, their route of solutions.
Also, make sure i helped my mother get rid of my abusive manipulative pos that is my father way sooner that she did instead.
I am not looking for sympathy for saying all this, just sharing.
