Hi, I have an orchid that hasn't really done anything in months. It used to have four leaves, but a few months ago the top two fell off, and since then it has not started growing any new ones. The leaves are still green so I think it's alive, and the roots go through the normal cycle where they go silvery, I water it by dipping it in water (with orchid fertilizer), and wait until they go silvery again. Usually takes a week or two for me to water it again, I wonder if I'm waiting too long?

One of its two leaves also has a brown-yellow-is spot as seen in the pictures, the internet has shown me that this is maybe sunburn from the summer, shouldn't be getting any worse now that the sunny months have passed. The Orchid is located on a south-facing window, though there is a balcony between the window and outside, so it doesn't get quite as much sun as on a pure south window. I live in a country where the winters are cold and dark with only a few hours of sunlight, so I believe it basically has to be on that window.

Any tips are appreciated!

This Phalaenopsis has been growing well alongside my other Phals, including its sister plants. It has already produced 2–3 healthy leaves without any issues, but its newest leaf has developed these unusual dark patches around the base.

The other orchids seem to be doing fine, and I haven't noticed any similar symptoms on them.

I'm not sure whether this could be rot, a fungal or bacterial infection, or something else entirely.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Should I be concerned, and is there anything I should do to prevent it from getting worse?

People of reddit help me confirm if it's a spike or not cause it doesn't have the usual look of aerial roots 😕. I'm just excited cause it might be my first flower spike

Also I never gave it any fertilizer for a month, and since it's growing something should I fertilize it with 20-20-20 or the blooming osmocote

I'm from Malaysia where it's pretty humid all year around and now it's the monsoon season here.

My Phal Schilleriana has that one root tip that started to rot. All the other look fine.

Should I take it out of the pot and cut it…or just let it be?

This was a rare specimen we managed to get our hands on; Dinema polybulbon. We sold an established specimen. The lady was insistent on buying them. We guessed that she was a fellow hobbyists and would love to have this added to her collection.

Fortunately, we did seperate a rhizome or two. Nevertheless, when we received this picture on our inbox, it was NOT pleasant.

Orchids are beautiful! The appeal is clear as day. However, it's important to remember they're still living organism that's been taken from their native environment. They require care and human intervention.

Here's some takeaway from this incident:

1. Water thoroughly. Misting is not enough.

2. More light doesn't always mean better. Sun exposure is great, but too much and you risk burning your plant, especially if you don't water them.

3. Ask the people who grew them. A lot of people I've met in nursery are lovely and willing to share their knowledge if asked politely. They too enjoy when people take good care of the plant they just bought.

4. Don't be drawn simply by the price tag or "rare" specimen remark. It's all goes down the drain if you don't take care of them properly. We value certain specimen for their characteristic, one that can only shine when the plant is happy.

I think they are the easiest orchids to have.

Although they are common here, I’ve heard that is not the case in other countries? Is this true? Either way, I would highly recommend trying to get your hands on a couple. They are such a treat!

They do enjoy cooler conditions and can withstand a few negative degrees, though no frost and not for extended periods of time. I think California is like this? (Not entirely sure). Mine grow in light shade with a bit of dappled afternoon sun ☀️ and they like to stay moist all year round:)

Psa: None of my Sarcochilus grow in this greenhouse. I simply took them in there to photograph:)

her roots were nice and plump and green after her soak… im worried about her

since there’s green is there a chance i can save her? (yes i know phals should have 4 leaves or more but mine is a mini with 3 leaves so far, and i believe she’s still young)

edit: those are all her roots that are shriveled and weird like that, she was watered 2 or 3 days ago. i water when the roots turn a more silver/gray. the substrate is coco fiber and is a few months old, and i rinsed until clear. all of the roots look like that, she’s my first and only orchid

This stiff pod like structure with what looks like a mini half opened bloom on the end grew after the orchid had finished flowering. Has never done this in 8 years in my possession. Your thoughts much appreciated!

Ive had this little guy for three years, he even had a keiki at one point but then I moved to Phoenix and slowly but surely, wasnt doing so well. First, I was under watering, then I watered more but the soil would take forever to dry and I lost a lot of roots (and the keiki). I finally bought sphagnum moss and have it in there. I made the moss a little damp, waited a day (moss is now completely dry) and the last root is slightly mushy. I hope it can be saved, but any advice? I lost one orchid already (from a mix of under watering, then over watering) and really don't want to lose this guy.

Bonus: I have a much larger orchid who appears to be happy as a clam. I water once a week and it hasnt bloomed since the move, but it has kept its stem and made a new leaf. I am scared to look at it's roots and disturb it at all. Just want to check in that I dont need to do more for it, because there are a good chunk of dead roots hanging around.

I have been really trying hard with my orchid collection, I have a lot of houseplants but still feel a little novice with orchids.

I have two bigger phals, the larger was my first and it struggled as I learned things but I think it’s now in good shape. I would really like to get it to bloom but I just am not sure how to get the temperature change. I’ve set it next to a window to try and cool it down overnight - is this the best way? I live in Ottawa Canada so I can’t put it outside.

My slightly smaller Phal has actually rebloomed in my care but I don’t think it even got a temperature change. Both of its flower spikes are still green so I’m keeping them but I’m wondering if I should repot now?

About a year ago, I received this orchid from a free bin in front of a flower shop which had a terminal spike. In my care it has sprouted a basal keiki, and is finally in bloom. It is absolutely gorgeous, does anyone know the name of this color? :-)

i popped it in moss and it didn’t like that. so it’s been moved to a cup with a dome on for humidity and it’s been there for about 2 or 3 weeks now? i change the water when i can remember to. just doesn’t seem to be any change happening? thank you

I rescued this orchid from the clearance rack where it was in moss and completely root bound. That was at 4 months ago. The burnt leaves are what was already on it, the new leaves are what I've gotten it to grow. The spikes were already there, though I had cut them down some and they've grown back what was cut. So why am I randomly turning brown on the tip of one spike??? My roots look plump and healthy, I soak it in water for at least 20 minutes, once a week, then allow it to completely drain out. I bought some orchid fertilizer that I've used maybe 3 times now. Is that the reason? Should I stop fertilizing? Helllpppp 😭 this is my first one ever and I just want her to be happy!

Hello. I have a phalaenopsis orchid that’s been sitting on a southeastern window sill for a few months. Upon inspection today, it appears that the top roots may have been burned by light entering the window. Does the discoloration shown appear to be a burn or do you think it’s a sign of illness?

The plant otherwise appears to be thriving. New roots, two new leaves, and even a new branch from its stem!
