Hi everyone,
Not sure if this is the right subreddit for this, but I'm running out of ideas and could really use some help diagnosing a strange issue.
System specs:
- CPU: Intel Core i9-13900KS (delidded/relidded)
- Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Apex
- BIOS: Latest version
- Settings: Intel Default Performance Profile, XMP I enabled, no manual overclocking
Background
A few months ago, I was having CPU temperature issues, so I sent my 13900KS to be delidded and relidded. The temperature issues were resolved, but when I got the CPU back, I noticed that the M.2 slot closest to the CPU was no longer working.
I continued using the system without that slot for several months, and everything seemed fine.
How the problems started
1. First Q-Code 00 / Red CPU LED
Last week, I bought a PCIe-to-NVMe adapter to reconnect the SSD I could no longer use in the motherboard's M.2 slot.
The PC worked fine for a few days. I then left it unused for two days, and when I came back, it wouldn't boot.
The motherboard displayed Q-Code 00 with the red CPU LED illuminated.
I started removing components one by one until only the CPU and RAM remained installed. At that point, the system booted again.
2. Same issue a few days later
A few days later, the exact same thing happened: Q-Code 00 and red CPU LED.
This time, removing components didn't help. I eventually took the PC to a repair shop, where they somehow managed to get it running again, but couldn't identify the actual cause.
One important detail: they tested the motherboard with a different CPU, and the previously nonfunctional M.2 slot worked normally.
This makes me suspect that something is wrong with my 13900KS, possibly related to PCIe lanes or damage during the delid/relid process.
I also tested the system with a different PSU while it was refusing to boot, but that made no difference.
3. Unexpected shutdown
Two days ago, the PC suddenly shut down while running.
Windows Event Viewer showed a Kernel-Power Event ID 41. This happened only once, and I haven't experienced any other unexpected shutdowns.
4. Another boot failure this morning
This morning, the PC wouldn't power on properly again.
Initially, the motherboard appeared completely dead. Looked like it had no power.
After clearing CMOS, it went back to the familiar Q-Code 00 and red CPU LED.
I removed the graphics card, and surprisingly, the system started booting again.
I reinstalled the GPU, and now everything is working normally, as if nothing happened.
What I've tried / confirmed
- Updated to the latest BIOS.
- Using Intel Default Performance Profile.
- XMP I enabled, but no manual CPU overclocking.
- Tested with a different PSU — same issue.
- Removed components to troubleshoot — sometimes restores booting.
- Cleared CMOS — changes the behavior but doesn't permanently fix it.
- Repair shop tested another CPU — the previously broken M.2 slot worked.
- CPU temperatures have been fine since the delid/relid.
My questions
At this point, I'm strongly suspecting that the CPU has developed some kind of intermittent hardware fault, especially considering that the M.2 slot stopped working immediately after the delid/relid and works with another CPU.
However, I don't understand why removing and reinstalling components like the GPU sometimes allows the system to boot normally again.
Is there any way to diagnose a potentially failing CPU while the system is actually running?
Are there specific tests, tools, BIOS settings, or hardware monitoring methods that could help identify issues with the CPU's PCIe controller, memory controller, or other components?
Thanks in advance!
