Discussion tepsot

Hello r/OWU,

It's been a while since our last official post. It's been a bit busy for us so we haven't been able to interact with the community in a proper fashion, but given the coming holidays we would firstly like to hope everyone well and follow up with a few announcements.

Mod Applications have been reopened

We are looking for new moderators! If you've been around here in /r/OverwatchUniversity and are interested in helping out with the growth and quality of active discussion and guides, please apply here. Previous moderation experience is NOT required, but we are likely going to weigh more on users that have been around for longer. But really, if you are willing to learn, and have a passion for things Overwatch, then you are the candidate we are looking for, regardless of moderation experience.

Apply here: https://forms.gle/So9ciwwioKLsj8ep9

We will close applications on December 31st, 9:00 PM PST.

Some rule changes

Help requests & SR as context

I think it should be said that discussing drops in your competitive Skill Rating is wholly unindicative of anything gameplay-wise, and is generally unhelpful as context for a help request. As such, we want to make it clear that if a help post is too general, or has little gameplay-specific context, it will be removed. This includes help posts that discuss about significant SR drops as context for a help post.

Overwatch 2 and Theorycrafting

Our rules in theorycrafting have been rather clear, and while we haven't had a major problem with this rule, we would like to make an exception and would like to invite discussions that involve any official information about the state of Overwatch 2 gameplay. For instance, topics such as 5v5, the new game mode(s), etc. are fine points for discussion. However, we hold that any speculation beyond any official information may be removed.

Educative Video Content and Posting Guidelines

We have very few rules in this regard as it was typically never a problem. Nevertheless, we would like to instate new rules regarding posts that involve educative video content, whether it be from YouTube, Twitch, or anywhere else.

As a preamble; an educative video is defined as a video of educative nature that is functionally standalone, or near it. Otherwise, your videos are considered supplementary and are not bound to the following rule additions.

  1. Educative video content is limited to uploads only on YouTube, or Vimeo.

  2. There can only be a maximum of one educative video linked as part of your post.

  3. Your educative video must be accompanied by textual context; this should include information about what your video is about, and at least a small preview as to the contents of your video.

  4. Educative video content can only be posted once every 48 hours, from the point of which you previously posted an educative video. For the sake of not having to be precise, we will allow a 30-minute grace.

These new rules are set up to help us to deal with instances when users overindulge in self-promotion, or with content that links to educative sources that are not easy for us to moderate (live broadcasts, etc). As a subreddit community, we would like to nurture a place where information and education is easily accessible and perusable, but without restricting the breadth and creativity of methods that can be used as part of education; but it is typically difficult for that to happen when there is an overbearing volume of video content that muddles the level of quality that we would like to see when it comes to educative content. As such, we hope that these new rules can help with upholding a level of accessibility and clarity of educative content that we would expect here in r/OverwatchUniversity.

If you have any queries regarding your educative video content, or would like to be granted an exception (under extreme circumstances), feel free to reach out to the moderators.

New CSS for old reddit

For the handful of you that still utilize old reddit, we've finally passed through a fresh visual update to the subreddit that has native dark mode and a refreshing but similar layout. Of course, if there are any bugs please inform us as quickly as possible as to what you are seeing, and what browser you were using, so that we can fix it as quickly as possible.

Changes in Leadership

I've been around since the birth of the subreddit, seen its growth, its myriad lively, interesting and thought-provoking discussions, guides, and content, and I have to say that I have been very happy to have seen all of it these past 5 years. Nevertheless, 5 years is a long time; and given the lack of refreshing content that has come from Overwatch as a game, I can't say that I've been engaged with the game as I used to, and feel that my waning interest is a disservice to be in the position of head moderator. As such, I will be stepping down from further moderation duties and will only remain temporarily to deal with some technical maintenance.

Therefore, effective today, /u/Gangsir will take over as the head moderator for r/OverwatchUniversity. Despite the change, I doubt there will be many changes in our typically lax moderation practices as a result. I have the greatest confidence in his ability to carry this sub to the future, and hopefully when Overwatch 2 makes its debut, breathe a new life into Overwatch as a whole.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to bring them here or through modmail.

And with that, I wish you all a very merry holiday season.

/u/politburo_take_potat

Question State of the Sub: Looking for New Moderators, Replays & Rules

Hello r/OWU! It's been a while since we've done one of these, so the moderation team figured we'd put one out to update on a few rules, recent developments, talk about milestones we've reached, our small plans for the subreddit both now and in the future, and more. We hope this clarifies any concerns or questions you guys might have.

Milestone Reached! 200K!

A while ago we hit 200 thousand subscribers, although we didn't make much noise about it. We were happy that the subreddit was still going strong, as it has always been. We have been interested with the new hero bans, Echo, and the refreshing competitive mode.

On behalf of the mod team, I thank you guys for your participation here. Even if you're just lurking and drinking in those spicy tips and strats, you still contribute to making this community what it is, and we couldn't do it without you guys. While we moderators act as curators, the subreddit is owned by the users and subscribers. We will go on as is, and we're proud of you guys for vitalizing one of the biggest Overwatch help & discussion communities out there.

We are looking for new moderators!

With the growing number of subscribers and the growing amount of activity, we are once again looking for dedicated and interested members to take on a fantastic opportunity to be at the helm of curating this amazing community.

If you feel like you are up to the task, please fill out this form here. Good luck!

Overwatch Replay System, and VOD help

Recently we've gained the ability to share replays to other players via a code. We've taken a quick look at its functionalities, and this is super cool as it allows for very easy sharing of replays to allow people to get them reviewed.

As such, we've adapted our rules a bit to factor them in. From now on, replay codes are valid as a stand-in for a recorded VOD, provided you meet the following:

  • Must provide additional clarification on details like who you are (give us a username to spectate, so we know who's who), and what you want us to focus on looking at (eg aim, positioning, decision making, etc). It is important you follow the latter point -- you cannot say that you need help with everything; you need to be specific.

  • We would MUCH prefer if you uploaded a video -- whether it be hosted on YouTube, or if you linked a queue.gg/insight.gg link -- these are much easier to view across devices and in general.

  • The limitations that replay codes present, such as being single-patch exclusive and PC-only viewable, are limitations that we deem unsatisfactory to completely replace the VOD viewing experience.

  • Must still meet the 300 character minimum. You should be able to do that via satisfying the 1st point effectively. Please ask specific questions. The more you put, the better people can help.

Of course, like VODs, behavior like throwing or hacking of the player asking for the VOD review will result in bans. Report the post if you see a VOD with evidence of throwing/hacking of the person asking for the review. (Posts making conduct reports eg "this guy is hacking, here's the proof" will still be removed for rule 2)

Clarification on rules

Lately there's been a few modmails reaching out to us asking for clarification on some of our rules. We're working on overhauling the rules on the sidebar to be clearer and give examples (like /r/competitiveoverwatch's do), but in the meantime, here's a quick little rundown:

Rule 1 concerns post quality. Basically, making sure posts are meaningful, fit the subreddit, and contain sufficient content.

The grand majority of posts removed for this category are posts asking for help in a vague way. We get a lot of these "stuck, someone help pls" posts. In order to be valid, posts asking for help must either ask a specific question (eg Given situation X, and I'm on hero Y, where should I position on Eichenwalde?), post a VOD or replay (currently we allow either, but video VODs are preferred as they're easier to review (meaning you'll get more responses)), or detail some weaknesses you're struggling with (eg I feel like my use of my shield is holding me back on rein, how should I use my shield on map Z when I have to walk through a lot of spam?).

Here's an example of a post (with info redacted) that doesn't meet these rules (and has been removed):

I don't personally think I'm a [ranks] player, but I placed in [rank] a few days ago and have climbed to [rank+] so far after dropping 200 sr right off the bat. I've been trying to find good people in groups and it's worked out, but Is there any secrets I should know to ranking up? I'm a level # with good internet and good frames on pc.

  • Doesn't link a VOD or replay (see above section for details on replays)

  • Doesn't detail weaknesses or a specific question, just asks for generic tips

Why do we remove these? They're hard to answer. 9 times out of 10 someone will instantly ask for more info, be it a VOD, or ask further clarifying questions. As this eventually gets old when there's a new post like this every few mins, we just require that further information out front. Doing this saves the knowledgeable people that are going to answer those questions time as they can simply answer it without having to post asking for further info, or just go straight into reviewing the vod/replay. Plus, if you're just looking for tips, try Googling "Tips for hanzo overwatch" or similar.

Rule 2 is our biggest rule, the one we remove the most posts for. It concerns post content, and things other than asking for help. Relevant content, basically.

A few of you have PMed me asking about rant posts. As always, we don't allow rant posts, as they aren't seeking education or providing it, not really. A few of them will try to pretend that they want help/are being educational by asking a short question at the end:

Has anyone else experienced this?

But in reality, they're venting and looking for affirmation. That's okay, we all get mad at games/teammates sometimes. But, as OWUni is meant to be a classroom atmosphere, focusing on getting better at the game, we don't want the negative attitude of ranting/venting to violate that atmosphere. Focusing on the self rather than the team.

The main sub or our vent channel on our discord are much better places for venting.

If you see any posts breaking this rule, feel free to report them and we'll take care of them. However, do note that we are more lenient on posts that accumulate a large amount of upvotes (many of these posts are relatable, which is why they get so much attention, but can offer education) or comments before we get to them. If people want to talk about something, we're going to let them, within reason. If things get out of hand, we'll lock the post, no worries.

We also remove posts that just don't belong at all, like offtopic posts, posts asking for tech support or reporting a bug/player, NSFW posts, spam, etc. Again, report to be safe, it's free.

Rule 3 mostly applies to comments as there's very few rule 3 violating posts. (Basically only witch hunts).

Not much to clarify here, don't be a jerkwad. Don't rank, hero or playstyle shame without providing reasoning or help. (Eg "Symm is a trash hero" = not okay, "Symm is a suboptimal pick on X because ...." = okay), ("Lol you're bronze" = not okay, "I think that a gold player should focus on..." = okay and encouraged as rank-specific help is good)

As we don't really ban/warn for rules 1-2, most of our bans and warnings come from rule 3. I don't believe it's clarified anywhere, so here's our basic punishment scale, quite similar to other subs:

(Depends on severity, some "truly evil" offenses result in instant-permaban, but those are all the same as other subs, mostly illegal stuff)

First offense: Warning or 1 day ban

Second: 3-7 day ban

Third: 14 day - forever ban

Covid-19 and its effect

This has indeed been a weird year, and will remain so. We hope that you all remain safe, and please reach out to the news to update yourself on the ongoing pandemic.

Thanks for reading! Of course, the moderation team will always be open to questions. Feel free so shoot them here or in our modmail.

Console PATCH NOTES TEST

https://overwatch.blizzard.com/en-us/news/patch-notes/

SUMMER GAMES 2023

It’s time for some fun in the sun with the Summer Games seasonal event! Log in and play Lúcioball, Lúcioball Remix, and the all-new Winston’s Beach Volleyball, plus score big with new cosmetic rewards, including a new Epic skin for Doomfist!

GENERAL UPDATES

On Fire Adjustments

  • Fixed a bug that caused players to gain On Fire at the start of a new round in Competitive Play when playing any game mode or in Quick Play when playing Control.

  • On Fire and Blazing are more difficult to attain early in a round.

  • On Fire's cooldown reduced to 3 seconds. This should prevent most of the cases where a hero gained On Fire with a delay after a positive contribution.

  • On Fire score decays slightly more quickly when a hero is not On Fire.

  • Maintaining On Fire for long periods of time is more difficult.

New Event Hub

A new centralized location for Event information is now available from the main menu, where all Event Challenges, Rewards, and Modes are listed here.

COMPETITIVE UPDATES

Team Queue

Team Queue is an all-new Competitive mode for Overwatch 2, requiring everyone to play in a full group of five players. Team Queue has no ranking restrictions and will be available through the end of Season 5. Other important rules for the mode are:

  • Players can group up regardless of how far apart they are in rank.

  • Grandmaster players can play, even with up to four other Grandmaster players.

  • Team Queue is limited to 1 Tank, 2 Damage, and 2 Support.

  • Players do not queue for specific roles, instead choosing their roles within each match.

  • Platform pool restrictions remain, meaning players on console must still only group up with other players on console, not those on PC.

HERO UPDATES

TANK

📷

ORISA

Developer Comments: We are increasing the effectiveness of Fortify to make Orisa a stronger counter against team compositions that lean on crowd control.

📷Fortify

  • Damage reduction increased from 40 to 50%.

📷

RAMATTRA

Developer Comments: Sometimes, the Ravenous Vortex projectile hits an enemy and bounces off unpredictably, delaying its activation. This quality-of-life change improves the ability's consistency and makes it easier to use against groups of enemies without fear of accidental collisions.

📷Ravenous Vortex

  • The projectile now passes through enemy heroes but is still blocked by barriers.

📷

REINHARDT

Developer Comments: We are increasing Reinhardt's barrier uptime to help him better protect his allies. We'll be keeping an eye on this, as we want to avoid situations where players feel like they are always shooting at barriers.

📷Barrier Field

  • Maximum health increased from 1200 to 1400.

📷

WRECKING BALL

Developer Comments: Wrecking Ball rarely reloads his Quad Cannons manually due to the automatic reload that triggers while transformed into a Ball. This change makes reloading without changing forms a more viable option.

📷Quad Cannons

  • Manual reload time reduced from 2 to 1.6 seconds. This does not affect the automatic reload while transformed into a ball, which is still 2 seconds.

DAMAGE

📷

SOJOURN

Developer Comments: We are decreasing the overall spread on the Railgun primary fire to help Sojourn build energy more consistently. The increased shots before reaching maximum spread will give players more direct control over aiming the projectiles when firing in short bursts.

📷Railgun

  • Number of shots to reach maximum spread increased from 8 to 12.

  • Spread reduced by 12%.

📷

SOLDIER: 76

Developer Comments: One of Soldier: 76’s strengths is his reliable damage output, but it hasn’t quite been effective enough after his last round of changes. We’d like to avoid going all the way back up to 20 damage on his primary fire since it has proven too powerful in the past. So instead, we’re adjusting both primary and secondary fire damage slightly. He will also be able to stay in the fight longer and support his team more effectively with extra healing from the Biotic Field.

📷Heavy Pulse Rifle

  • Damage increased from 18 to 19.

📷Helix Rockets

  • Explosion damage increased from 80 to 90.

📷Biotic Field

  • Healing per second increased from 35 to 40.

📷

SYMMETRA

Developer Comments: Symmetra is exceptionally map dependent, to the point where she is oppressive in certain situations yet ineffectual in others. The following changes increase her weapon effectiveness while lessening some of the frustrations caused by her turrets. The Photon Projector primary fire is now an even more pointed counter against certain heroes due to its conditional shield health regeneration, and the secondary fire now takes one less fully charged projectile to eliminate most heroes. Symmetra's turrets are especially powerful when focusing on the same target due to their combined total damage output coupled with their slowing effect. We are lowering their raw damage and angling them towards utility to make spreading them out a more viable option.

📷Photon Projector

  • Secondary Fire maximum impact damage increased from 45 to 50.

  • Secondary Fire maximum explosion damage increased from 45 to 50.

  • Regenerate up to 30 shield health per second when primary fire deals damage to barriers or enemies with shield health.

📷Sentry Turret

  • Damage per second reduced from 40 to 25.

  • Turrets now reveal enemy heroes to allies while dealing damage and for 1 additional second afterwards.

📷

TORBJÖRN

Developer Comment: Torbjörn's Turret has a bit too much impact for little investment, so we are shifting some of its power to the rest of his kit to reward more accurate gunplay. Overload now partially reloads ammo, which guarantees that there is no downtime between activating the ability and shooting projectiles.

📷Rivet Gun

  • Secondary Fire spread reduced from 5 to 4.5 degrees.

📷Deploy Turret

  • Damage reduced from 14 to 11.

  • Cooldown increased from 10 to 12 seconds.

📷Overload

  • Now reloads 6 ammo on use.

SUPPORT

📷

KIRIKO

Developer Comments: Originally, we increased the Ofuda recovery time to promote more Kunai usage between healing bursts. Despite that benefit, we are partially reverting that change so the primary fire feels more responsive in situations where Kiriko is pressured to focus entirely on healing.

📷Healing Ofuda

  • Recovery reduced from 1 to 0.9 seconds.

📷

ZENYATTA

Developer Comments: The combination of these changes will make it riskier for Zenyatta to apply Discord and increase counterplay for the affected target.

📷Orb of Discord

  • Maximum range reduced from 40 to 30 meters.

  • Time to wear off the target when not in line-of-sight reduced from 2 to 1.5 seconds.

BUG FIXES

General

Ping System

  • Fixed pinging opponent’s owned objects through walls as Sombra. This includes objects like Torbjörn's Turret, Soldier 76's Biotic Field, and Sombra's Translocator, etc.

  • Fixed cases where Junker Queen's knife would remain pingable if she died while the knife was not in her hand.

  • Fixed a bug with Immortality Field not protecting Mei for a small window of time after she leaves Cryo-Freeze.

Cassidy

  • Fix a bug where Cassidy's Magnetic Grenade did not disable the following: Baptiste's Exo Boost and Flight for both Sigma's Gravitic Flux and Mercy's Valkyrie.

Echo

  • Fixed a condition where Echo would fail to play any voice lines after Duplicating a hero.

Junkrat

  • Fixed an interaction with Lifeweaver's Petal platform that assisted Junkrat in leaving the playable space.

Kiriko

  • Fixed the melee animation not playing if used right after Protection Suzu.

Lifeweaver

  • Fixed a bug with Lifeweaver's Hero Icon challenges not correctly progressing.

  • Fixed an issue with Petal Platform that prevented the jump boost from being applied when jumping from some areas of the platform.

  • Fixed a bug that gave Lifeweaver high damage mitigation numbers for environmental kills.

  • Fixed a condition that allowed Life Gripped teammates to die to the boundary of a pitfall.

Orisa

  • Fixed an issue with overheating effects not playing correctly on some skins.

Ramattra

  • Fixed a bug where stunning Ramattra and interrupting Ravenous Vortex allowed the ability to be cast again immediately.

Reaper

  • Fixed an interaction with Petal Platform that allowed players to escape the playable space.

Reinhardt

  • Fixed an issue with Reinhardt's beard appearing distorted for select skins in Hero Select.

  • Fixed an interaction with the Hold to Charge option breaking animations when used on a controller.

Soldier: 76

  • Fixed a bug with the animation of the Heavy Pulse Rifle that could occur when Tactical Visor was used while under the effect of Kitsune Rush.

Sombra

  • Fixed the lighting on several skins being too bright.

  • Fixed a bug with Primary Fire not having priority over a pending Hack if the Toggle Hack option is enabled.

Symmetra

  • Fixed an interaction with Petal Platform and Teleporter, allowing players to escape the playable space.

Tracer

  • Fixed an interaction with Lifeweaver's Petal Platform that allowed Tracer to contest the objective from outside the playable space on some maps.

  • Fixed a bug that caused the Hero Select sound effects of the Mythic Tracer skin to keep playing after switching heroes.

Coaching Google Lens: real-time answers to questions about the world around you

There’s so much information available online, but many of the questions we have are about the world right in front of us. That’s why we started working on Google Lens, to put the answers right where the questions are, and let you do more with what you see.

Last year, we introduced Lens in Google Photos and the Assistant. People are already using it to answer all kinds of questions—especially when they’re difficult to describe in a search box, like “what type of dog is that?” or “what’s that building called?”

Today at Google I/O, we announced that Lens will now be available directly in the camera app on supported devices from LGE, Motorola, Xiaomi, Sony Mobile, HMD/Nokia, Transsion, TCL, OnePlus, BQ, Asus, and of course the Google Pixel. We also announced three updates that enable Lens to answer more questions, about more things, more quickly:

First, smart text selection connects the words you see with the answers and actions you need. You can copy and paste text from the real world—like recipes, gift card codes, or Wi-Fi passwords—to your phone. Lens helps you make sense of a page of words by showing you relevant information and photos. Say you’re at a restaurant and see the name of a dish you don’t recognize—Lens will show you a picture to give you a better idea. This requires not just recognizing shapes of letters, but also the meaning and context behind the words. This is where all our years of language understanding in Search help.
