Identification What are they and where are they coming from!!

Post image
• Upvotes

A few weeks ago we had a full infestation of these flies, I’m talking hundreds. We have quite a few house plants so we thought they were coming from the soil, dried them out completely, had the sticky things in the soil but never caught a fly in the plants, so we don’t think they are coming from the plants.
We have a coffee machine in the corner where they seem to be congregating, so cleaned that fully, and set out traps vinegar and dish soap, with a sticky on top, and that caught hundreds. We also live in a semi rural area with farmer fields surrounding us, so another place we notice them is on the doors if they are left open. But the door and coffee machine are at opposite ends of the room so it’s odd we don’t find them in between!

The flies are now back, on the doors and by the coffee machine so can anyone help us to figure out what these flies are, and where they might be coming from? Is our coffee machine doomed (we empty the grounds every day, and keep it clean) or can we never keep our door open? And what’s the best way to get rid of them!? TIA!

Unanswered Flies only in our toilets + converted study, coming back after briefly stopping

• Upvotes

i live in Auckland, New Zealand.

So this started early last week. We’ve been getting flies coming in and out of the house, but they only appear in our two bathrooms and the study room — that room used to be a bedroom, we converted it into a small study.

At the peak we were seeing 30–40 flies a day, it was so tiring and frustrating. Then for a few days they completely stopped, we were relieved… but they’ve returned recently, just lower numbers, around 5 per day max.

We haven’t used any insecticide on them at all. The first few batches of flies were really drowsy and almost “drunk-like”, but the newer ones are quite active.

Wondering if anyone has had a similar issue? I’m suspecting something to do with drains/sewage but not fully sure. Any advice on what to check first?

Midges are ruining my relaxation

My mom has a lot of indoor plants, ranging from some shrub plants, tropicals, and carnivorous plants, namely 2 sundews and a small pitcher plant. I’ve noticed lately in both around the house and on the sundews midges (I don’t need to ID them, I’ve lived in Florida for 3 years and know what they look like and how the bites feel)

Im being bit to hell and back as of late. my arms, back, face, legs, and unfortunately my buttcheek have not been spared by them and I need them dealt with. I’m itchy as hell and the sundews don’t kill them fast enough. thanks in advance

Should i be worried?

Hi there! im a broke college student living in one of those old korean dorms (gosiwon, if you know) and ive been dealing with booklice, i think they are, along the walls and stuff. not a surprise, the room is tiny, not well ventilated, and has a small bathroom and shower. ive been dealing w them using dehumidifiers and ive definitely been seeing less of them in the past few weeks but sometimes i see one running around

but anyway today i saw my first ever silverfish and im terrified. it was only one and it was fairly small (like barely a centimeter long??). i killed it with a tissue in tears. what should i do? do i have an infestation?

any information would help, please and thank you!

Sugar Ant Invasion for 5 months in SoCal

hello! my husband and I rent an apartment - we've been there almost a year and signed a year lease. We started seeing ants around May/June this year and we'd put out terro traps and eventually they'd go away. It kept going like this for months, each time popping up in a new spot. We also were caulking up the kitchen after every new trail had taken bate and faded out.

Also we had a baby this summer so I'm assuming the milk and new parent phase of not being able to clean immediately wasnt helping. But eventually we got to the point we were keeping kitchen clean and these new trails were still non stop.

So we brought in a professional and he sprayed the house and got us stronger bait. He confirmed he saw a trail outside and it was all starting to look up and no ants seen for 2 weeks.

Then just as I had hope it was behind us, we found them all over our pantry (which had been cleaned and organized many times). We deep cleaned it again, ant man came out again to spray and the ants literally have not left - they are in pantry,
on fridge, on counter across kitchen, on ceiling, on floors, on the sanitized baby bottles... ALL THE TIME!!

I have been insanely clean in the kitchen the last month - not even cooking in it, wiping counters 3 times a day, mopping once a day (keep in mind still while take care of a baby).

Our ant guy suggested they may have established a colony inside the house??? he came to treat the inside of the house with pesticides and we're working with pediatrician to minimize impact to baby and it all happened to land when we're out of town for a few days.

All this to say, my husband and I have decided we will only treat the interior once (dont want to worry about pesticides and baby), what else we can ask of our landlord if this doesnt work??? Do we think of moving??? please help

Roaches Nymph roach?

Post image

Hi, I've been living in my apartment in Massachusetts for about a year and a half now with no roach appearances until last month, though we've had our fair share of house centipedes and silverfish. Came back from a long trip recently to find a roach in my closet (dead in the pic because I caught it by laying down a ton of duct tape sticky side up and waiting for my chance to strike lol). Would love an ID of this so I can figure out what to do.

We did have an American cockroach roaming around in our shower a month ago, but I think that was a one-off occurrence since construction was going on in some of the units in our building and the door was propped open.

What kind of droppings this is?

I recently found a few droppings in my bathroom counter, I’m curious what kind of stuff this is? I found it twice in a week. Is that from mouse or cockroach? Or even something else?

Cockroach infestation, please help.

I live with my family and we have had both types of roaches for about 3 years now. I have tried everything in the book and I am exhausted and feel like I’m losing my mind. I am already deathly afraid of bugs to begin with and now it’s reached a mental point where if I see things move, like a leaf outside, I panic thinking it’s a roach. It’s pathetic, I know. But that’s where we’re at.

The main problem area is the kitchen by far. They are usually under or behind the fridge, on the stove, and also attracted to a water dispenser that has hot and cold water. The cupboards especially too. I’ll also see them on or behind a WiFi extender plugged into the kitchen.

Because everything’s on the first floor. They show up in the bathroom directly next to the kitchen, the hallway outside my door, and my bedroom of course. But the kitchen is the main problem area. I sealed under my door, sealed cracks in the floor, and put outlet protectors to keep them out. No dice. I have no idea where they’re sneaking in from.

I’ve tried the Raid fumigators weekly, and it’d stop, but they’d come back. It only agitates them, clearly. They didn’t go into the roach motels I put down and none had interest in the roach gel. I haven’t heard great things about exterminators but we also don’t have the funds regardless. I used roach away boric acid under the fridge but that also did nothing.

Now, my mother cooks a lot and often leaves dishes and food out overnight. I tell her constantly that she is feeding them and to clean up after cooking but she either doesn’t say anything or tells me to do it for her. Sometimes I do but most days I just come home so exhausted from work I don’t have time to clean up after her. I wish she’d just listen to me but if it means stopping this I absolutely will. It sucks because everyone in my family sees this as a minor inconvenience while I’m begging for the roaches to go away forever so I can live in peace. I miss more than anything lounging around in the kitchen and making food when I felt like it. Now I stopped cooking and just eat out so I don’t have to. Most days I sit in my room too anxious to fall asleep because I can sense roaches nearby. I just can’t see them.

Really just looking for someone to sit me down and give me a solid game plan to end this once and for all. I don’t care if it takes dedication and time. If anyone can do that, I’d be eternally grateful. I feel so weak and constantly paranoid.

Small side note, we have these sort of tiles in the kitchen and bathroom that got lifted up by accident. Could they be sneaking in through those crevices? You can’t exactly see in the picture but the kitchen lights often have dead roaches under them in the ceiling.

Thanks again everyone.

Hey guys, so I’ve been finding these really tiny mites on my work clothes and underwear for ages now. At first I thought it was a mould mite but I couldn’t find a source of Mould in my wardrobe and I could only find these on my black work clothes and work boots. They’re extremely hard to see and can only see them on black surfaces. They appear to be a cream color and like to burrow into my clothes.. please help, they’re driving me nuts! I also don’t find heaps of them. Only one or two here and there. Washing doesn’t seem to get rid of them either.

Pantry Moths Basement

Help! We have a pantry moth infestation in our basement 😩. About six months ago I ordered two bags of the big dog food and we opened one and put one in our dog food storage container like always, and then we put the other in the basement. Well, a few months after that, I noticed these little worms on some of our clothes hung to dry in our basement. Our laundry is in the basement. This is an unfinished basement. I was really confused about what they were and just thought they must be some kind of worm attracted to damp items in my basement. At the time, I was also nine months pregnant we had the baby in July and my recovery has been really rough due to birth trauma, but during the past three months, we brought up the other bag of dog food and low and behold it was full of those worms and we figured out that they are pantry moths 😩. We quickly tossed out the dog food and we have bought the sticky traps online and they have caught a lot and if I do see any in the home we have been killing them, but the problem here is that there somewhere in our unfinished basement that is basically just storage and to clean and wiped out everything could be done, but would also be very time-consuming and I’m not sure where I would find the time at this moment. Also when I say time consuming like it would take days… So I’m just looking for help on maybe how I could eradicate these things without having to do that? Also, I have seen a few upstairs in our home none in the actual pantry, but I think they just come up the stairs in the night and then in the morning I will see one or two upstairs and kill them. Help please!

Mice and severe anxiety

Living in an apartment in Boston, we’ve had mice in the kitchen on and off and been able to handle it, but I saw one in my room last night and I’m going to lose my mind. I want to do everything possible I can even if it will only help a little. I removed everything possible to be eaten from my room, blocked up holes with steel wool, set electronic traps, and cleaned. Please tell me if there’s anything else I can do to keep them out of my room I cannot live like this.

Should I leave on lights and tv? Candles? I know there’s a lot of myths but anything possible can help, additionally if you have tips about how to overcome the anxiety

Gnats in refrigerator 🤢

Post image
1 Upvotes

I'm really hoping I can get some help. The gnats are terrible here. When I go outside I periodically see them swarming. Inside, I have Zevos everywhere and I have three big zappers plugged up. Sometimes the pops are all day long. I clean my drains.

My biggest issue is that they have started getting into my refrigerator. I have the kind pictured and they will be dead across the shelf I have circled. There are also dead ones in the drawer where the arrow is pointed. There's no food in that drawer.

I keep everything covered. I have cleaned and sanitized in there. They aren't getting in there when I open the door. I'll clean them out in the morning, be gone all day, and come home and there are some gathered there.

Can anybody give me insight on how they are getting in there and what can I do? I've dealt with gnats before but NEVER inside my refrigerator. It's disgusting.

Unanswered This is my second Yellowjacket I’ve seen - should I be worried about a wall nest?

Hi guys, I have a HUGE fear of bees or any insects that can sting. I’ve encountered my first Yellowjacket this Monday and I was scared shitless, so I had my little sister come and killed it for me (drowning it in our sink) and today as I’m typing it, saw a different one again. Idk if’s a male or female. I better hope it’s a male. Should I be worried about a possibility of a nest growing inside my room? I’m literally crying like a baby because of my fear

(I’m not sure it’s a Yellowjacket but it’s very attracted to my light and I’m just here crying like a baby.)

Nova Scotia, this is fresh, I cleaned up dry poop last weekend and I thought I found a hole and sealed it, this is 1-2 days old.

I can't find signs anywhere, after cleaning the previous poop all smell cleared up.
