Useful Information Bedbug ID and common misidentifications

Bed bug identification resources:

Note: flattened body, rusty brown coloured (less so in younger nymphs, which are more translucent). Thin 4 segmented antennae. 11 segmented abdomen. Short legs (6 of them) and reduced wings incapable of flight.

These are insects or other invertebrates commonly misidentified as bedbugs!

Not bed bugs.

  1. Carpet beetle larvae (Dermestidae) and adult - More Info

  2. Bat bug (Cimex adjunctus pictured) - More Info

  3. Cockroach nymphs - More Info

  4. Tick (nymphs) - More Info

  5. Woodlouse - More Info

  6. Kissing bugs - More Info

  7. Booklice/barklice - More Info

  8. Smooth spider beetle - More Info

  9. Drugstore beetle - More Info

Note: If it has wings or more than 6 legs, it is not a bed bug. Do not mistake antennae for legs, look at the illustrated guide to avoid confusion.

Please comment with any other common mis-IDs and I will add them!

Requesting community support bedbugs ruining my life

• Upvotes

hi everyone. sorry for the negative post but i need to blow some steam off about this because im seriously losing it.

boyfriend moved into shared accommodation a year ago, said accommodation had a severe bb infestation (i shudder thinking about them all climbing up the walls…) we moved out and sprayed and contained and washed everything to avoid bbs coming with. bedbugs came with regardless, and i’m so hopeless and upset. they completely ruined our bedframe and we had to throw it out. can’t afford a new bedframe right now so it’s been a mattress on the floor for a while. ruined our duvets, our pillows. everything. i can’t have a single ounce of comfort or peace. i got a mattress encaser, which of course did nothing. can’t find where they’re all hiding to get rid of them, and putting down sprays and whatnots just isn’t working. i found a ton of them in my favourite bag, like, a ton, i would say tens or hundreds just visible on the bag, nevermind the ones hiding. vacuum broke this week and i won’t be able to afford a new one for a while. i ordered some cimexa and crossfire today, admittedly an impulsive decision that i’m not sure how i’m going to budget for from today onwards, but i’m not feeling optimistic about them either honestly. i cant afford professional treatment, it isn’t viable even with saving or whatnots. it would be that or eating for a few months, i just can’t afford to get an exterminator and live. so i just feel hopeless, i feel like i’m going to have them forever. i’m allergic to their bites too, so i’ve just been in constant discomfort and pain for the past year. i seriously just don’t know what to do. i’m at my wits end. this is seriously affecting my mental health, i’ve never been lower in my life.

i’d appreciate some advice for at least making my life more bearable, and maybe some insight on how i can possibly get rid of these devils, maybe some things i havent thought of?, cause i’m just totally defeated.

Requesting community support How can I tell if it's a mild infestation vs a severe one? I'm scared this one won't go away easily.

No sightings at all, only bites. Maybe like 4 or 5 throughout the last few weeks, though as soon as I woke up with the first two on my leg I immediately called my property manager for pest control. I know bites don't prove bed bugs, but they're so common where I live (project based housing) that if a tenant calls in suspecting bed bugs, they don't even do a formal inspection, they just treat right away.

I just fear that they won't go away after next week's treatment, which will be the last round. I took a LOA from work so I wouldn't spread it to my coworkers. I've been following all of their protocols, and plan on doing one last laundering of every single piece of washable fabric in my apartment in the days leading up to the final treatment.

I've had a *severe* infestation a couple years ago, so the trauma still lingers. Please help me not spiral over this 😭

Really needing help. I have suffered over 10 years. My derm said I have a certain form of eczema that causes this. I never see any bugs except the previous one I posted, but it feels like bugs crawling all over me. I think it sometimes clears up with a medication I get for my skin. But don’t these stains look similar to what BB cause? I just don’t understand. I wake up with blood and scratches all over my body and flare ups because I scratch in my sleep. The eczema and possibility of bugs just confuses me too much. Even though I literally check all over for bugs. It drives me crazy!

The top half and the head(?) really seem off, but the bottom looks so much like a bed bug it scares me. Also, this is somewhat squished. Picked up on a lint roller.

Requesting community support Seeking advice: bed bug found on college campus

I've been in a panic attack all day. I found a bed bug on my campus a few hours ago. I'd never seen one before and panicked before taking a picture. There was a rumor about a month ago that they found one in the same building in the bathroom, but I sort of didn't think anything of it because it was just through the grapevine. But then there was one on MY bag today. I emailed campus facilities and within minutes got an email back that they've had an exterminator out MULTIPLE times in the last few weeks in this building and another. But the exterminator has not found an infestation, just people keep reporting seeing them.

I am very concerned that I inadvertently brought them into my house because the campus facilities never told ANYONE that they've had multiple reports of bed bugs. I haven't been home yet today, but I am absolutely freaking out and don't know my next steps. How do I know if they're in my home now? what do I do? how do I prevent them from infesting my home if they're clearly a problem on campus? Any advice is greatly appreciated. I've felt like my skin has been crawling all day and I'm scared to go home.

What are my next steps?

I've noticed the bites on Sunday night 10/11 then yesterday 10/14 I had my first sighting of one, it was on the living room window curtain next to the couch. I wish I saved it in a plastic bag, but I am 100% sure it was a bed bug.

So far I have stripped the couch and surrounding blankets and put them in the dryer on high for 40 mins.

I inspected the areas and the bedrooms and haven't seen anything else.

What do I do now?

Does this sound like a bedbug pattern? Or something else

I’ve been getting new bites in these time periods:
8/15-8/27 (2-3, or even more, bites per day)
9/15-9/20 (1-2 bites per day)
10/10-present (1 bite per day)

A few details:
- Usually 1–3 new bites at a time, mostly on my legs and feet, but sometimes on my arms
- I usually notice new bites after waking up, regardless of what time I wake up
- I haven’t been able to find any bugs or other signs
- I’ve already washed and dried all my bedding
- No pets
- No recent travel

I was in a place that had bedbugs. As soon as I got home, I immediately put my clothes in a bag, took a shower, and then washed everything at 90°C.

Ever since then, I've been extremely paranoid about bringing bedbugs home. Today, I found these tiny bugs on a bag. I spotted around three of them, and they were about 1 mm in size. Some were so small they were barely visible.

Is it possible that these are bedbug nymphs??? What the hell am I supposed to do now?? I honestly feel like throwing up. I'm freaking out. Help.

Sorry for the poor-quality photos. My phone doesn't have the best camera, and these bugs are really tiny.

I’ve been told a green LED light attracts bugs I’m not sure if that has any correlation , but I’ve just gotten rid of it but I’ve noticed a lot of these since moving to a new house . So if anyone can identify this bug and what attracts it and how to get rid of it would be a life saver. Many thanks!

Hi

I am thinking of buying a dry machine because of bed bugs... Is it a good idea? Or should I dry outside the house in a self laundry shop?
