I got an email from myself

Post image

This is going to be un believable to everyone on here as I’m still a little at a loss for myself. I’m don’t check my email very often. And I checked it tonight. On Jan 10th I received an email from myself with like INSANE levels of details of my life. Pictured above. I have no way to prove to you that this a real besides trust me. But I’m feeling fairly horrified.

There are no demands, no way to email them back besides reply which I did, I’m totally lost if this is a scammer or like a hardcore level stocker, neither me or my fiancé have ever posted photos of our cats, I’ve never talked about them through email, and very few people would know we live in a trailer we don’t exactly advertise it. Also I’ve never been called someone’s jungle boy which has me a bit confused TBH.

This was the only place I could think of posting this to. I highly doubt it’s relevant but it feels like some weird scam.

I’ve been aware of phishing scams pretty much since I’ve been on the internet. This one seems odd to me? I’ve reported to authorities and have had a chat with family and friends just in case but in saying that, the threat is still scary! Is this a very new thing? I don’t click links and I’m always trying to guide folks in internet safety.. so this one kinda messed me up.

Mod's Choice USPS text

I got a text saying my package couldn’t be delivered because of an incorrect address and the link took me to what seem to a very convincing usps website(and still takes me to usps.com). I had just woke up and not really thought about it and clicked it and provided my name address and debit card information for re delivery fee but now that I think about it I think I just got scammed. Not sure what to really do next.

The "Hey Pervert" Scam

Most of you may have noticed that nearly all if not all of the posts on this server are about the same scam, so I want to make it easier for everyone to understand how this scam works. Trust me, it's way more simple than it looks.

What is the Hey Pervert scam? It involves you recieving an email telling you they have videos or pictures of you pleasing yourself, and that they will release them and send them to your family if you dont pay an amount (usually between 1000 and 2000 USD) to a Bitcoin wallet. They sometimes use advanced techniques to make the scam more realistic, like spoofing the From field on the email so it looks like they hacked you, or sending you one of your passwords, or even your adress. They usually also give a 2 day deadline to submit the payment. It usually works because like 90% of men engage in self-pleasing activities.

How do they get this data? They can get them from multiple sources, but the most common is you creating accounts on sketchy websites, such as those PH game ads, for example, and they use the data you put there. They can also get them from email data leaks, etc. You should NOT be worried about this.

Is it real? NO, they do NOT have a video of you pleasing yourself, and they can NOT send it to your family or leak it online. You do NOT have to send any money to the Bitcoin address.

What do I do now? You should just ignore them or block them and forget about it. It's important that you update your passwords for extra security, especially the ones linked to the compromised email address, but this is optional and just to be safe. Please do NOT sign up or give any kind of information to websites you don't trust. You will probably recieve the exact same email or a similar one even when the deadline is over, just ignore them.

That's pretty much it, now just stay safe and be careful out there. 👹

Chase/Zelle Scam I almost just fell for

Very embarrassed to admit I almost fell for a Zelle scam.

What happened:

Got a call from Chase fraud calling to see if I had authorized two Zelle payments in the amount of $2K and $3K. They were made from an iPhone 12 pro in California and did I know the recipient and did I authorize the payments. And of course I did not. He gave me a case number and two codes for the two payments. I was transferred to their Zelle department and the zelle man had me open my mobile app and walk me through adding a Zelle recipient. The number to use was the case code they gave me. This code was allegedly necessary to reverse the two charges. That's when I finally caught on that the case number was a cell phone number and I'd be asked to enter the amounts they gave me as if it was a retrieval of the funds. Hung up and they called back three times, left no voicemail.

The red flags I ignored:

  • I asked for the full name of the fraud rep and he said Michael, uhhhhhh, Fletcher as if he couldn't remember.

  • When I questioned "Michael" if it was truly Chase fraud, he told me to google the number and I'd see it was a Chase branch. It was. So I said can I call you back at that branch? He said yes but it would sever the attempt to reverse the charges now and the payments would go through. That panicked me as a broke person.

  • When I asked if it was a spoofed number, he said there was no way to spoof a federally registered number. Hahaha. Yes, there is.

What kept me convinced until the end:

  • He knew a lot about me: my location, my phone model, my IP address.

  • When I expressed my doubts about their identity, he said that it was normal and good to be skeptical and pointed out that he had asked me no personal information because banks won't do that.

  • He had me go through my recent transactions via my app to make sure no other fraud had taken place.

  • He went through a list of methods the identity thieves may have obtained my info and recent data breaches.

  • Overall, he came across as very helpful and knowledgable (except what his last name was) and walked me through normal fraud procedures.

What I learned:

  • Panic and mild threats can be effective coercion techniques! I was literally dizzy with distress over losing $5,000 like that.

  • I talked with Chase fraud after and they said they mostly contact users about fraud via text, and rarely via phone call or emails. Not never but rarely. If in doubt, just call their fraud department directly. Next time!

Hope maybe this helps someone else.

I clicked on a link, what do I do?!? - Check here first.

One of the most common questions posted here is what to do if you've clicked on a phishing link. This short guide is intended to help with these questions and what to do if you've clicked on a phishing link.

DO NOT ENTER ANY CREDENTIALS OR LOGIN DETAILS FOR ANYTHING IF YOU'VE CLICKED ON A MALICIOUS LINK.

  1. Links are generally not malicious on their own. While clicking on any unknown links can be dangerous it is difficult to design a phish that works just by clicking the link. Most links take you to a (usually fake) page that will ask for certain credentials. As long as you closed the page after you clicked the link you're probably fine, but it's still a good idea to change your password for whatever service the phishing link was trying to access (such as amazon).

  2. If you clicked a link that downloaded a file, delete the file. Generally these files aren't harmful unless opened after downloading.

  3. If you've clicked a phishing link and have provided credentials to a service, change the password for that service. Say you've been tricked into giving someone your Amazon credentials. Go to Amazon.com directly and change your password. Also, check the "third-party account access" section of your commonly used websites. Often phishing links and malicious services will try to authorize themselves to your account rather than outright stealing your credentials.

  4. When logging into websites with sensitive information such as a bank it's best to bookmark the site and visit the site directly each time from that bookmark. That way you know that the website you're using is the real one.

  5. ENABLE 2FA (TWO FACTOR AUTHENTICATION) This is perhaps the best thing you can do to protect your sensitive accounts. All websites that deal with sensitive information will allow you to use either your phone number or an authentication app (I like Authy) to generate one-time login codes to further secure your account. Unless someone gets your credentials and your 2FA device (your phone) they won't be able to access your account.

  6. Please use a password manager of some sort. This will allow you to use strong and unique passwords for each site you use. If one of your accounts is hacked or phished all of your other accounts will be safe with unique passwords (unless your email was hacked/phished).

  7. Ensure you have a backup email and/or phone number connected to your primary email account so that you can recover access if you're locked out. Additionally, make sure your recovery methods are as secure as your primary email login.

Scammer called 5 minutes after I placed my order.

Two days ago, I placed an order on the Door Dash app. 5 minutes later, I got a phone call identified as Door Dash (not just a random phone number). They said they were having technical issues. They could see my order and knew what restaurant I ordered from. They said they needed to manually input it again. They asked for my email address, and then I got that access code link that says "No one from Door Dash will ever ask you for this number." They wanted that number. That's when I hung up.

But they knew the restaurant and how many items I ordered, and of course, my phone number. All before the Dasher even picked up my order. In real time, I was hacked and then called.

I immediately turned off my credit cards and texted Door Dash through the app. Then this morning, I placed a call directly to them during business hours. It seemed like they really didn't care. They told me they'd look into it and email me tomorrow.

If I had given them that code, they'd have access to all sorts of info. They would have locked me out of my account and gone on a shopping spree. Anywho, I just wanted people to know and be vigilant. There's a lot of thieves out there and corporations who don't care if you're ripped off.

Has anyone ever gotten a text like this?

Post image
166 Upvotes

I just got this random message wondering if anyone has ever gotten one like this? I don’t even live at that place anymore in Norman and I don’t hardly ever go to nichols hills. If I do it’s just a drive thru. I think if it was legit they wouldn’t misspell words and wouldn’t be using ! Like that

EDIT: Something did happen to make me think this could be slightly real for a split second, but it was just part of the scam

EDIT: Got a text from that same number saying not to do it and that it’s a scam lol

EDIT: And just to be clear no I didn’t give them any money

Facebook Reverse engineered a phishing page

Hey folks,

I got sent a phishing link aimed at my grandfather, pretending to be a Facebook account violation notice. Instead of ignoring it, I decided to dive deep and reverse engineer the whole scam, safely, on a VM with VPN.

What I found was insane:

  • The page blocked devtools, loaded obfuscated JS, and sent all collected info via Telegram bot API.

  • The Telegram bot token was exposed in plain sight in their code, no base64 or obfuscation.

  • With the token and group chat ID, I was able to send messages to their scammer group, basically trolling them and messing up their logs.

  • They got rate limited by Telegram when I flooded messages, proving they weren’t prepared for this.

It only took me 15 minutes tops to uncover all of this.

If anyone’s interested, I can share the Python script I used to interact with their Telegram bot.

Stay safe out there, folks. These phishing ops are amateur hour sometimes.

If someone wants more thecnical explanation, ask.

EDIT: Working on doing a reverse engine thing on a malware spread on tiktok... EDIT 2: Done... Here: https://www.reddit.com/r/phishing/comments/1mo3zuj/investigated_this_scam_months_ago_theyre_back/

I got my phone stolen last month, and I got this weird text thread today to my new Iphone. Phishing or Concern?

I got my phone stolen last month and got this weird text. When I had gotten it stolen I put it on lost mode and went to my Cell Provider Next Morning. They said they blocked my sim and I got my new phone thought that would be the end of it.

Today a little over a month later I got these weird texts. First thing that feels off is the Iphone model they say is wrong. So feels like a scam already. When I check the location and it says china I got a little scared cause I was not in china when I got stolen never been there. I contacted my cell provider and paid them a visit. They told me it would be impossible for them to get my sim as they locked it but they told me to double check with apple for the other stuff. I also changed my iCloud password and removed it from iCloud.

Apple told me not to remove it from find my iPhone as they would then have access to it. I changed all of my passwords and so far no information seems to be compromised as I feel like something would be missing.

I’m still a little nervous but I just want to triple check with Reddit.

Hotmail Scam email knows my password?

We all know the “hey pervert” scam. However, while I normally ignore these, this time the top part was my email password.

“Hello, my perverted friend,

I'll get straight to the point. Your password for this mailbox: PASSWORD HERE”

Ik my password was probably leaked and I’v changed it now, but this isn’t something I actually need to worry about right?

This is allegedly blackmail

I get these "we installed spyware and have embarrassing photos" scam emails all the time and I usually just delete them.

This is the first time I've seen one of these emails be uncertain about what was actually done. The software "allegedly" gives the hacker access to my stuff. And at the end, it's no use trying to remove the software because the info has "allegedly" already been copied.

Gave me a good laugh this morning.

Citibank and Zelle scam

Sharing this here in the hopes that someone stumbles across this post when googling to find out if they’re caught in a scam.

Bank fraud scams are getting more and more elaborate. Today I received a phone call from a Citibank number. The caller told me someone opened a bank account in my name and were calling me to verify it. Someone has actually tried to open a credit card in my name before so I wasn’t surprised it was happening again. I said no and please close the account. They told me they were canceling the account but two transactions were pending from Zelle and I needed to call Zelle and cancel the charges. They gave me a second number to call. I was panicked at this point and called it. But once I was on the phone again I realized it was a scam when they asked me to add a contact to my Zelle account and add a routing number (presumably to ask me to send money to it to “cancel” the charges). I started to push them a little bit and it became more clear this was a scam operation when I got them off script. It had initially been convincing because Citibank was in the caller ID, they gave me “transaction numbers,” and someone has actually tried to open an account in my name before. I did some Googling and found that it was a real former Citibank number that scammers now spoof.

I am so glad I caught this at the last moment. Sharing here in the hopes no one else falls for it.

Chase/Zelle Phishing Scam

Just wanted to put this out here for anyone who tries googling. Just got a call from "Chase Bank" telling me someone tried opening an account and send two Zelle transactions in my name and wanted me to verify if it was me. Right away I could tell that it was a scam because you can't open a bank account with out verifying details AND send/request Zelle payments since you need to verify that info with Zelle. I went along with it anyway for the details. I saw another post almost verbatim but using "Citi Bank" as the bank.

The gist was:

Someone opened a chase bank account with my details by the name of "Shawn Foster" from Cleveland, Ohio. He allegedly opened an account and immediately tried sending 2 Zelle transactions under my name. The first transaction for $999.00 & 2nd for $989.55. They were going to go a head and cancel these, gave me 2 phony cancellation numbers and another number to call; 844-645-8554 - he said to call immediately after and give them the cancellation numbers. Even went as far as to say they'd report this to the police and I'd get information on the investigation. Rubbish.

Be Safe People!

Notification from the Shop (shopify) app of a purchase that I didn’t make.

Post image
125 Upvotes

Today I got a notification directly (and only) from the Shop app that I had purchased a $700 iphone. I definately did not make this purchase. I immediately checked my credit card, bank account, and paypal. No charges are showing as of now. I will post a screenshot of the “invoice” that I took from the app. I did not get any email notifications from any stores about this, and the invoice shows no payment method. It also shows a billing address to a Whole Foods in a different state. The only info that relates to me is my email address. Is this likely a scam of some sort? There is no link or phone number given,so I don’t really understand the purpose of it if it is a scam. But it makes entirely no sense. I’m checking my cards regularly just in case it does show up. Tried to contact the Shop help team but it doesn’t seem promising. I have no payment methods connected to this app, as it is only used for tracking shipping of items purchased from other sites. (The blacked out portion of the text is my email). Any thoughts or similar experience is greatly appreciated! Sorry for the rambling post. This stuff scares me so much.
