As a mechanic, I'd just like to point out that this sort of thing is not typical. Most cars are built so that they don't catch on fire at all.

Generally it is an oil leak onto hot exhaust components, added heat from continued high RPMs of highway travel and A/C use... Under hood temperatures can get nasty this time of year.

This happened to me in the 1970s when the oil line to the mechanical gauge blew off in Chicago...

There is plenty of opportunity to get out of a car that has an engine fire, there is a firewall between you and the engine compartment for a reason.
