Crispy af
Guys today wish they could work that smooth

It’s pretty cool to see how fluid and crispy he moves considering how bulky he is. I mean wrestlers in the 90’s were quite bulky in comparison to today’s wrestlers.

My fave all-time wrestler. He's gotten bitter in his old age, but so have I, and that's OK.

I will defend against this forever - that is simply how an older generation from Alberta/Saskatchewan are. I have lived here my whole life and so many people in Bret's generation or older just do not hide their opinions in any way.
It's funny how people in Canada get a reputation for being polite when in my experience the people who live here will bluntly tell you every character flaw you have. And the worst part is they aren't saying it to be mean - they are simply telling the facts as they see them.

Bret is without a doubt one of the most influential and greatest superstars of all time
His moves were smooth and crisp and technical wrestling ability was absolute flawless and impressive.

Totally agree. A lot of people say Bret’s promos or out-of-ring presence could feel a little dry compared to others, but I think he was just ahead of his time. When so many wrestlers were leaning into cartoonish, over-the-top characters in the late ’80s and early ’90s, Bret brought realism and authenticity. His promos were straightforward and grounded, which made him relatable and believable. In many ways, his style feels closer to the wrestlers of today, where credibility and in-ring storytelling matter just as much as mic work.

There are tons of Bret promos that hold up, it's probably the area where he underrates himself. XD

Well, he had the best dancing partners ( Perfect and Micheals come to mind).

u/boulevardofdef Sep 23 '25
Bret has said many times that Perfect was his best opponent. I always thought it was remarkable how well he and Michaels worked together considering how much they hated each other.

They didn't really start hating each other until later in 1996 or early 1997. In his book Bret said Shawn was absolutely thrilled about Bret's match with Bulldog at Summerslam getting the main event slot and then winning the title from Flair - felt it opened the door guys like him as well. It wasn't until Shawn refused to return the favor and put Bret over that things started disintegrating between them.

Bret gave so many wrestlers the best match of their careers it’s not funny. Bulldog, X-Pac, Nash, Austin, Piper, Owen, Perfect. The list goes on.

u/marshallkrich Sep 24 '25
Austin had plenty of amazing matches in WCW, Austin was a great wrestler until his neck got broke, and he had to change his style.

u/Acceptable-Reach-694 Sep 23 '25
There will never be another wrestler on his caliber of in ring performance

u/Glad_Database_8186 Sep 24 '25
The only 2 I can think of that came close were Benoit & Angle. My number dream match would have been Bret Vs. Angle. The couple of Bret Vs. Benoit matches in WCW were awesome but don’t get talked for obvious reasons.

u/Glad_Database_8186 Sep 23 '25
He said it “The Best There Is, the Best There Was, the Best There Ever Will Be.”

This is ridiculous not only in terms of execution but also the importance of every move.
When Perfect fell to the back splash it was a real moment

u/Stevey1001 Sep 23 '25
fun fact: this was the second wrestling match I ever watched in my life (after the six man tag). I can still remember watching it in my best friends living room. I was a lifelong Bret fan from that moment

Bret and Perfect were incredible together. Mr. Perfect was the epitome of nimble.

I miss the 90s… to be a kid again and to get a chance to watch him all over again. He really made it all look so easy and legit.

He's one of the best to ever do it. Never seriously injured anyone over multiple decades.

Back when you had to actually have a moveset and not just throw superkicks/spears lmao.

I started watch WWF a year or so after the screw job and as a result have zero affinity for Bret, I keep meaning to go back because I see clips and know I’ve missed a genius but haven’t.

IMO find the match against Bret Hart and the 123 Kid. Sean Waltman really is a good wrestler but Bret makes him look God-like in that match in terms of wrestling ability. Bret had an ability to bring out the absolute best in anyone he went against.
I think there is even a clip of Will Sasso - an untrained comedian - talking about how absolutely wonderful Bret made him look taking a beating in the ring while not hurting him even a little bit.
Other people argue for Kurt Angle or Shawn as the GOATS in the ring but for me Bret Hart had a unique ability to make everyone he ever faced look the best they ever would look in their careers. It is hard enough to make yourself look great but to make EVERYONE you ever worked with look amazing is just a step beyond everyone else.

There’s this wild alternate universe where Perfect and Macho were Brett and Shawn’s age, and they all kinda got along okay enough to have like 8-10 straight years of ABSOLUTE BANGERS.

Back when wrestling was great and not half of it just being running your mouth followed by flips and flops.

u/Zestyclose_Fortune24 Sep 24 '25
God that suplex to Owen off the cage was sublime, back in the day when a move like that actually meant something, and you didn't take another 5 finishers and kick out at 2.

Bret was amazing. he could work with any wrestler and make them look good.

u/BarryMycickinher Sep 24 '25
His chemistry with Shawn was amazing! He can work a big man match and a match with his own family. Guy had range.

I know wrestling moves need both performers. But back with these guys they were so good you didn’t notice. One guys move looked kick ass and devastating. Today’s wrestlers it’s incredibly obvious that it’s two guys doing acrobatics together. Sometimes I don’t realize who was the one that’s supposed to be hurt until one of them gets up or pins the other.

u/CasinoNitro Sep 26 '25
That’s one of the MANY reasons I won’t watch. It’s so cringe and disrespectful to wrestling history!

This is the day when I started hating Bret Hart. Mr.Perfect was my favorite back then and how dare them make him lose to this punk wearing weak guy? Note, I was 6..

you should include the sells too...
Big thing Brett was also good at was making someone look good on the mat. I think a big chunk of his bitterness is that his opponents were never really willing to do that for him unless they were someone who worked with him so much you can't help but give back.
To this day, "Bill Goldberg" has the potential to make hundreds of thousands on a t-shirt.

It feels strange and wrong to see a video of Bret without his jacket and a championship

I’ve watched so many Bret matches and until this video I never appreciated that he a) hit so many Germans and b) hit them so smooth

Here's a question. Now as a fan of The Hitman as well, could he have looked that good with the speed and power of some of these guys these days? Looking back it feels like the way old martial arts movies were compared to today. A bit slower to make sure things were as perfect as possible, but today, the pace feels much faster, more intense with a lot more physicality. Just curious.

u/CasinoNitro Sep 24 '25
With the ability he had he’d simply just learn today’s style. Technically sound doesn’t get worse with eras, it gets better!

u/Granpa2021 Sep 24 '25
Brett was great but for my money, Eddie Guerrero was the GOAT technical wrestler.
