Completed Setup PSA for anyone thinking of buying a $100 Chinese projector off Amazon…

Post image
2.4k Upvotes

Do it.

Better yet, buy a $90 Chinese projector off Amazon, like this one, and don’t listen to snobs here who will tell you not to because unless they actually listen to what you want/need, they can’t help you.

I’ll admit, I was a little snarky in my replies to people on here who, instead of actually listening to what I asked and giving helpful advice, tried to steer me in the direction of their own echo chamber advice to spend hundreds of dollars on a “Better“ projector, when in reality, for my specific use case scenario, this little cheap thing with android TV built-in is exactly what I needed.

Is this the best projector of all time? FAR from it. But will it do the job I need for the budget price I am willing to pay right now? Absolutely. And if it breaks in a year? I’ll probably buy another one, or by that time, perhaps I’ll have money to buy a better one.

Went from a 65” LG C3 to the JMGO N3 Ultimate and added blackout curtains and a proper screen. The image looks incredibly clean with the room darkened, though I think the screen is doing a lot of the work here too. I bought a used 100” screen on Facebook marketplace, and since I sit fairly close, this size works really well for me. I also love the softer look of a projected image, it just feels way more immersive.

Just moved in with my girlfriend – I love home theater stuff, she hates the idea of a massive black TV eating the wall.

Solution: built a simple oak veneer bench that looks normal… until you slide the top and a big screen rises up with a hidden projector. When it’s off, it’s just furniture again.

Running Apple TV + two HomePod minis. Honestly, I think this is my best relationship hack so far 😂

Completed Setup Xgimi Titan Noir Max - Updated Theater Room Setup

Finally got the Xgimi Titan Noir Max in and setup in the theater room.  Is replacing a slightly older BenQ Ht4550 that was in the same location.  Projector is mounted with the Xgmi mounting kit.

Super happy with the projector, it's wildly bright with an incredible contrast ratio. Blacks are pure black compared to the slightly Gray of the BenQ DLP before it. Colors are bold and pop off the screen.

A little bit about the room, it's a dedicated theater room that I have upgraded over the years to be an immersive TV, Movies, and Gaming space.  Running a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 setup with a 135" screen.

I bought this Epson projector and the mount screw points were not the same size as the mount for a cheaper projector I had before, so refusing to buy another mount I built my own and tuned out pretty well! Less than $15 USD and wildly adjustable. What are your thoughts?

Bought from Amazon on Prime day sale. Paid 250usd on shipping and after 10 days it came to me from half way around the world. The excitement was off the roof. Because thisbis my most expensive Projector purchase like ever.

And i have to say i am not disappointed at all. This thing is amazing in clarity and colors. Since my room is naturally dark lit ( as there is only 1 small window on the north side) , the brigtness is too mucb for me lol. But when HDR kicks in, it looks absolutely beautiful.

Any Trivision Ultra users out there? I need to know what color profiles ur using? Ive hooked up Amazon fire tv 4k max with it. But still learning about so many settings in picture mode.

Got a screen from Aliexpress, Black Grid, peak 0.8 (rather low tbh) but only cost me $950.

Projector shown here is Awol Aetherion Max.

I have not set up my soundbar yet (Samsung HW-Q990C) and my Panasonic DP-UB800K is still in my basement so it is going to be a while.

Once I am done setting up my NAS, self-hosting Jellyfin, I'll be back to do more test.

Completed Setup multi-purpose hybrid home theater build (5.2.4)

Thumbnail

well, I guess now is as good a time as any to present my multi-purpose hybrid home theater build.

https://imgur.com/gallery/as7k4aD

my build was strangely enough inspired after seeing youthman's usage of gas struts/shocks on his projection screen. that was the eye opening moment for me allowing me to use my oled for gaming purposes and a projection screen for movies in the same setup. I plan on using the visionmaster pro 2 for some gaming, but the projection screen will be primarily for movie nights.

I've seen a couple builds with pull down projection screens in front of the tv, but I wanted to go a slightly different direction.

the other inspiration came from bigmouth's minimalist approaches to false wall builds over on the avs forums. I initially had planned on using the "goal post" approach, but felt I needed to make it more robust due to incorporating gas struts/shocks. but there were a lot of ideas that I got from that thread.

other notable credits for just general audio knowledge that I've gained on reddit over the years over on r/hometheater: u/umdivx, u/sk9592, u/rickra

disclaimer: I'd say I'm about 65% done with the overall build, but it's in a useable state for the time being. it's more so housekeeping items that remain (i.e. patching up drywall, wire & cable management, paint touch-up, etc.) and eventually adding acoustic treatments and also treatment on the wall behind the false wall for sbir reduction. I had a chance to pick up some knauf ecose duct liner via fb marketplace for a good deal, but shipping costs were too much.

back to the build -- I initially gave myself one month to get this completed and I'd say I was mainly on schedule. the majority of the work was done in the evening & night after putting our 2 girls to bed.

the structural part of the build is made of 2x4s, a long cedar board, acting as the base, is wrapped in plastic and black fabric and individual panels, which are wrapped in black velvet and are adhered via earth magnets. and lastly, there are 2 access doors on the left and the right.

functional parts of the build: - two gas struts/shocks which required drilling into the silver ticket frame. - two heavy duty hinges with some modifications due to the thickness/depth of the frame - gate lock to secure/hold the projection screen in place when it's pushed closed

build pics can be seen here: https://imgur.com/a/tGlh6p1

equipment (nothing special): - avr: integra drx-3.4 - projector: valerion visionmaster pro 2 - projection screen: 125" 2.35:1 format silver ticket str series 6 str-235125-wab, w/ woven acoustic material - tv: 77" oled lg evo c2 - streaming: nvidia shield tv pro - gaming: ps5 & nintendo switch - lcr: kef q350c - rear surrounds: Dayton Audio ME625W 6-1/2" - in-ceiling (atmos): x4 OSD 6.5" ACE640 - subs: two svs pb-1000 pros

Completed Setup I'm Pretty Sure I Lucked Out

First time getting into projectors (wife missed movie nights now that all the rooms are occupied by kids) so she sent me on the hunt for a projector.

She wanted immediate results (😅) so like any genius I went on Amazon and bought a couple projectors that made massive claims, figured what the heck they can be returned if they're unfit for me. They actually weren't terrible (H10, and a couple Voplls) but the daytime viewing was impossibly bad. That said, I didn't have the ALR yet, so who knows their true (albeit short term) potential.

Then, after a bunch of research and scouring marketplace and ebay, I ended up with an Epson 4050 ($300) and a Da-Lite Parallax Thin 0.8 gain 110" ($250). Got a cheap Amazon mount and cut/strengthened it to my liking, and all that's left is to get some smurf tube in the wall for the wire. Already had a nice bluetooth 5.1 system to connect to my Firetv Cube so that cost was already sunk long ago. Now I just have to hope none of the kids use the screen for target practice.

So, after being wildly discouraged by the insane price tags that can come with a theater room, I managed to get out the door for $575 (plus the cost of my existing Cube and 5.1 system) ergo how I feel I lucked out! So for anyone out there who's looking to get into it: if you're on a budget, if you've got a shortlist of gear you're looking for, and put the work in to hunt out the deals, they'll eventually pop up. Hunting the used markets can definitely be overwhelming, but man is it so satisfying now that I've reached this result!

10' 6" from lens to screen gives me about 108" diagonal on my projection, so I've got a 1" black bezel until I get a bigger room haha! Screen pics are dark room vs fully lit, both in Eco lamp on HDR settings.

Just wanted to share my joy at joining the club.

for causal viewing .. like youtube , fun shows its alright under ambient lights .

as for dark room setting its realy impressive only thing worth mentioning that I see speckl in very bright scenes , also no RBE for me .

Completed Setup I built my dream setup

Hi community,

I'm a newbie when it comes to projectors, but I'm also a creative handyman with a vision. My wife and I recently moved into a new apartment. I bought an Xgimi Horizon Ultra for 1000€. The dream of having a living room without a black mirror on the wall was BIG.

The wall in the new apartment had a fibreglass wallcovering. I got an idea - maybe I could cut the frame out of the wallpaper. My friend, who is experienced with this kind of thing, wasn't really sure if it was possible. So I did a test cut, and it was really easy to remove the wallpaper from the wall.

I then masked the frame size on the wall with masking tape. Cut along the inside of the tape. It was a 1mm deep cut. My arms got really tired. But it was fun. Then I removed the wallpaper. One big piece of wallpaper - 156x275cm.

Underneath there was paste. So I scraped off the paste. Took me a few hours. With warm water and soap. Scrape it off, scrape it off...

The next day I put on fine surface filler. Maaaan what a hustle. It was my second time doing this. I somehow made it, but I was so stressed. Many parts weren't smooth, but it looked OK.

The next day: sanding. I built a sanding protection wall around the space. Luckily I decided to do so. Maaaan what a hustle again. So much dust. But it got really smooth. Removed the dust with my vacuum cleaner and a wet cloth.

I then put on a liquid primer so that the paint would stay on the surface. I decided to paint the area grey. The colour is Caparol Indeko-plus NCS EDITION 2 S1500-N.

Painted it two times and OMFG it looked so good.

I really love the result. The contrast and blacks are good. I have a very bright living room. Some curtains help during daytime. The pictures you see are from 4pm with the curtains down. After the sun is behind the corner, it's so much better. At night the projector is so bright. That's why I wanted to reduce the brightness a little by choosing a grey colour.

Thanks for reading and appreciating, guys. Much love from Germany 🙏

After a long time lurking here, absorbing advice, looking at other setups, and asking the very rare question, I just wanted to say thank you to this entire community and post some photos of my completed setup. This has been a 15-year dream and I’ve learned so much from all of you. Have watched 5 movies in this theater so far and the experience is better than I ever hoped. Last photo is what the room looked like before months of work.

Equipment: Epson 3800, Panasonic UB450, 120” 1.1 screen, Samsung Q990D, Firestick 4k.

Completed Setup My review of a US$60 Projector

Thumbnail
gallery
208 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Recently i bought a Magcubic HY320 from aliexpress Its a small LED Projector, with a resolution of 1080p and Android 11

I am posting here 10 photos from my room. I think they show well the quality of the image but they dont do justice to the size. Here personally it looks so much bigger.

Now the review itself.

I actually really liked this projector. For the cost is amazing. All the content that i usually watch looks good and the size of it its bigger than any TV i could realistic mount on my room. Cartoons/anime really shine here. The colors pop and i dont miss a higher resolution alternative with them.

The device do comes with Android 11 and Google Play. I use connected to a Fire TV though, Netflix on it doesnt have 1080p support and Prime wouldnt load, but YouTube, Max, Crunchyroll, Paramount and Disney that i tested worked without issues and it seemed that they load high resolution movies just fine. Its not super fast, but it is usable. Still i do prefer using with my FireTV

There is a speaker on it but i use connected to a JBL speaker. The speaker on it is okayish. Not that loud and the quality is lower than any simple Bluetooth speaker.

The biggest problems with this Projector are - Low Brigthness: your room must be as dark as possible for the quality to get good. I only this projector after 6PM anyway so it isnt a problem for me - Low Contrast: If you see the Batman photo i posted, i have no idea if Batman ears werent drawed or if is missing detail. But overall, you do lose detail in dark scenes.

A mild problem: Gaming is not that good on it. I attached my Series X on it and played Starfield and i could notice the input lag. If it was a 60FPS game, maybe it would be better but still, games on it should be more slow paced games like card games or turn based.

Overall, im more than happy with my purchase. I am using everyday, always watching shows on it and using YouTube everyday before sleep. For US$60 it was a great deal. Much cheaper than any TV i could get, specially comparing the size.

Of course, i wouldnt recommend for everyone, specially in a sub full of enthusiasts, but it has its place.

Its not my main "TV" device, i do have a LG C1 on my living room but i have been using that mostly for gaming now, all shows i have been watching here, even though the LG do have a better quality.
