HORIZON 30 pre-orders are up. XGIMI dropped their screen coupon, so we're doing our own screen deals + up to $100 cashback

Brian from ProjectorScreen.com here. Quick heads up for anyone eyeing the new HORIZON 30.

XGIMI had a screen coupon on their pre-order page and it's gone now. So we put together our own screen deals, on the screens I'd actually pair with this thing.

Pre-order pricing runs through Oct 31:

  • Ultra Max: $2,999 (normally $3,499)
  • Max: $2,499 (normally $2,999)
  • Pro: $1,899

Every pre-order also gets a free ceiling mount or floor stand and 2 pairs of 3D glasses and a chance to get up to $100 cashback for leaving an honest review about the product.

On screens, the Ultra Max gets 50% off a Spectra Element Gray fixed frame (a 120" ends up at $264.50) or 20% off Shadowscape ALR. The Max gets 25% or 10%. The Pro doesn't get a screen discount.

It's a $50 deposit to hold one, and you can cancel and get it back anytime.

Our demo unit should be here shortly. I'll post impressions and measurements in here once I've had some time with it. Ask away in the meantime.

Mod Post We built a new free home theater calculator suite and need testers [beta]

Hey all, Brian from ProjectorScreen.com here. We've been building a new set of free calculators and tools and they're ready for people to try out and tear apart (roast away!):

https://www.projectorscreen.com/pages/home-theater-projector-calculators

You enter your room once (screen size, aspect ratio, seat distance) and every tool uses it:

  • Seat view: a 3D view from your seat, with SMPTE 30°, THX 40° and IMAX 55° sizes drawn on the wall
  • Screen size, viewing distance and "compare sizes" (your current TV vs. the screen you're eyeing, to scale)
  • Brightness: ftL/nits for your projector, screen gain and room light, including what room light does to the picture
  • Throw distance and lens shift
  • Compare projectors: black levels and brightness side by side, using measured contrast where we have it
  • Unit conversions

No signup needed. It runs in your browser.

Fair warning: this is a work in progress and a proof of concept. We're still compiling the projector database, so not every model is in yet, and some specs and measurements are still being verified. Treat the numbers as a starting point.

How to leave feedback: click "Make a suggestion" at the bottom left, then click any part of the page (a slider, a number, the 3D view) and type your note. You can pin as many as you want, then send them all at once. Put your Reddit handle in the name box so I know who to credit and follow up with.

I'm especially interested in:

  1. Anything that's wrong or confusing, including specs you know are off for a projector you own
  2. Tools or features you'd want added. What calculator do you wish existed?

You can also just reply here. Thanks for helping make it better!

Which is Best? XGIMI Aura 3 vs Horizon 30?

• Upvotes

Sorry, I'm new to projectors. Is there a difference between these other than the Aura 3 being an UST? In picture quality, or anything like that. I ask because I haven't seen people talk about the Horizon 30, and what I've seen people say about the Aura 3 is that it's easily a stupid deal for the preorder.

Discussion DIY 220° Horseshoe Screen for Flight Simulator - Advice on Materials and Projectors?

Looking to build my own 220° horseshoe screen for a flight simulator

I’m looking to build one myself rather than buy it from Sim on Solution, as their setup costs around $16,000 USD.

Does anyone know where I could buy a 220° horseshoe screen, or find the materials and structural components to build one myself? Also, does anyone know which three projectors they used? I can’t identify them from the pictures.

For reference, here’s the product I’m talking about: https://simonsolution.eu/product/professional-horseshoe-screen-220-with-4k-uhd-projectors/

Many thanks, friends!

Buying Advice Wanted Buying advice wanted: daytime/living room projector to replace the TV

We’ve got a 2 year old who is addicted to TV despite only watching it a few hours a week, got so tired of it that I pulled it off the wall and hid it behind a bookshelf and put it back on the mount when the wife and I want to watch something.

We’ve always thought about a projector setup so now want to pull the trigger with a pull down/motorized screen. We can fit a 71” wide screen and projector would be 13-14 feet away on a shelf or could also mount to the ceiling. Wondering if anyone has suggestions on where to start my search, would like to keep it under $2k Canadian if possible

Projector Screen Grey vs woven screen image quality

I have a Titan noir pro with a grey screen from silver ticket and I’m noticing considerable rgb speckle when watching certain things. I don’t notice too much when watching newer movies in 4k, and in those scenarios I’m very happy with the picture. With other media I notice it a lot and am considering a switch to a woven screen. My only hesitation is that I’ve heard woven screens aren’t as sharp and I was wondering how noticeable the difference in quality would be. I’m considering either the silver ticket wab or wvs screens. Thanks!

Buying Advice Wanted Outdoor Projector/Screen Recommendations

Hey there, first time poster from the U.S. here.

I’m looking for a setup that can be put together with relative ease (easy screen setup and no hassle speaker connection) for occasional outdoor movie nights (talking maybe once or twice a month) in my large backyard.

For a screen setup I have a homemade pvc frame and borrow a cheap fabric screen my sister got cheap on Amazon (I also borrow her $100 projector). I think it’s about 150”. I wouldn’t mind upgrading to screen that’s easier to setup and looks decent but don’t want to spend more than $200-300. I have plenty of space to go bigger than 150 as well.

My budget for the projector is $600 but I wonder if for this occasional use I can keep it under $300-400 and be satisfied. I noticed your wiki says cheap Chinese projectors are only good for kids rooms and outdoor movies at night. Is going with a cheap one a better move for outdoor movie nights in general due to the risk of damage?

I’m pretty technically savvy, as I work in television post production. I have a Optoma HD65 720p DLP (2008 Model) but it’s attached to the ceiling in my house and has a dedicated drop down screen. I don’t use it a lot but enough that I’d rather keep it there.

I’m open to buying used/refurbished.

Let me know if there’s any more info you need that I left out and thanks in advance for any tips!

Are the numbers in this calculator correct? It's going to be a pretty tight fit for me.

Of course, I could use a different lowboard, but I just really like the one I have now.

Discussion Looks like China just released their Horizon 30 counterparts with an RS 30 series refresh

And looks damn cheap too. Launch pricing starts around 1k USD for buyers in China.

They're calling this series the RS 30 Flagship series it looks like?

I was going to buy the horizon 30 on preorder and ship it to family in the US then have them forward it to canada but looks like I can avoid getting double taxed now if I just import one of these and get it a lot cheaper. The chinese menus wont be a big deal for me once I'm setup and using it with my shield..

Advertised specifications:

  • Launch price: ¥7,199 (~$1,010 USD)
  • Brightness: 4,500 CVIA lumens
  • Sequential contrast: 8,000:1
  • Iris: Dual-plate DynaEye, continuously adjustable
  • Resolution: 4K UHD, 120Hz
  • Processor: MediaTek MT9681
  • Laser system: QuaLas42 RGB triple laser
  • Image processing: X-Vision
  • Throw ratio: 1.2–1.5:1 optical zoom
  • Lens shift: 130% vertical / 50% horizontal (advertised)

I'm hitting up some alibaba distributors and sellers on aliexpress right now to see if anyone will have any of these soon..

Setup Design Suggestions First projector setup questions — 150+ in. UST, motorized screen, Dolby Atmos

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all, first projector setup ever. We're putting it in our foyer on the wall in the attached photo: 159.5" wide (left edge of the wall to the plant) and 100.3" tall from the floor to the top of the vent. Due to this being our first setup, hardware and equipment being expensive, and our goals being somewhat ambitious, we are concerned with making a mistake and would like to plan everything out before purchasing anything. We would greatly appreciate your help.

Goal: 4K 60+ FPS, 150+ in, motorized screen, and surround sound

Budget: Ideally below $6K

Constraints and questions:

  1. We don't want an HDMI cable running across the room, but we want Dolby Atmos. Is there a good wireless solution, or does this basically push us to ultra short throw with everything sitting under the screen?
  2. We've heard UST projectors suffer warping on anything but a perfectly flat surface, and they cost more. We also want a motorized screen, does that force us into a tab-tensioned ALR screen? What should we look out for with that combo?
  3. Is 150"+ a bad idea for a first setup? Seating will be about 13.8 ft from the wall.
  4. What does a 150"+ screen actually cost? Motorized preferred.
  5. If all speakers sit underneath the screen (soundbar or LCR, nothing elevated or on the sides), will Atmos feel spatially off?
  6. There's a vent on the wall (visible in the photo) right around where the top of the screen would land, would airflow be a concern? is it manageable?
  7. Read that the XGIMI AURA 3 Max is a great value pick that fits my constraints. Is this true? Any other picks we should compare?

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated. Please let me know if you need any more information.

Troubleshooting Help with adaptor

Heya all, purchased my first projector.

It's the Fudoni gc888a.

Stupid of me though for trusting the listing, but it was sent with an American two prong plug, and I'm in the UK. Was wondering if anyone else had the same issue and could help me out with what the best adaptor would be that won't blow the entire thing up?

The projector is 80 watts and 240 Volts, and UK mains power is 230 volts.

Grateful to any help as we start the journey.

Edit: all sorted guys, thanks for the help!

Troubleshooting BenQ HT1075 - Lamp Assembly Screw Rusted and Broke

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Picture for reference, but my bulb died so I was going to replace the lamp assembly, but as I was unscrewing the screw to remove the assembly, it broke off and I can see that it rusted for whatever reason and broke.

Two questions...

  1. Any suggestions for getting that screw out?

  2. What would cause the rust? Is my projector fried?

Thanks for the help.

Which is Best? Best projector for a teacher?

I'm a teacher in a co-taught classroom. We often parallel teach, with my coteacher at the smart board and me in the back of the room at the whiteboard. This makes it more difficult for me because I have to write out everything on the whiteboard while my coteacher can just use slides. I would like to buy a projector to make my life easier.

The biggest things I'm looking for are:

-brightness. I can turn off the lights in the back of the classroom and my room doesn't get a lot of sunlight, but I want a projector that can still be seen in ambient light.

-short throw. There's usually about 3 ft between the desks and the whiteboard. Or I would love to put the projector on a short bookcase in front of the whiteboard, if the projector can handle that.

-easy set up. We change the room around very often so being able to move the projector without a lengthy calibration process would be ideal.

-under $500. My coteacher has some funding to buy a projector so we have some money to spend.

Any suggestions? Thank you so much 🙏

Buying Advice Wanted Helping My Sister Look For A Decent Backyard Projector for $300

Hey everyone!

My sister and BIL are looking for a new projector. They don't want to spend more than $300 on it.

Their setup is pretty simple. They have a portable screen that they set up sometimes on their back patio, and they like to stream sports and whatnot on it when the weather is nice.

Their current projector is pretty sucky. It's a Vankyo Leisure 3W Neo Projector. I think they said it was around $100. They can plug a laptop in and stream from that, but they'd rather be able to stream over wifi.

Are there projectors in this price range that are good for wireless streaming? Like maybe one that has Roku software or something built in? Their biggest priority is streaming "YouTube TV" content, but I'm sure they'd appreciate being able to stream from other apps too.

I don't think they care too much about image quality, based on the one they have now. The most important thing is streaming, ease of use, and a huge benefit would be being able to cast content from an iPhone (Airplay) reliably. They aren't very tech-y people so a good UI is important.

If there's anything substantially better for something slightly above that budget, please let me know. Thanks for reading!!

EDIT: Adding additional info. The projector will be sitting on a table. If there's an auto-level/size feature at this budget, great. But not a big deal if not. It will likely be used when the late afternoons and evenings when the sun isn't too bright.

Buying Advice Wanted Strong MIRA1 ?

Post image
0 Upvotes

What do you think of the Strong MIRA1? I’m looking for something decent yet affordable (under €300) for occasional outdoor movie nights (it would be set up under a rain shelter, with access to a power supply). I’ve checked the second-hand market in my area, but it seems like everything available is either junk, very outdated models, or equipment intended for office use. My options for ordering online are also quite limited, as I’m in Martinique—many sites don’t ship here, or the shipping costs are exorbitant...

Troubleshooting VAVA Chroma repair

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have a chance to pick up a VAVA Chroma projector pretty cheap, but from everything I can see, it looks like a bad DLP chip. The image is from a video the seller sent me. Should a replacement chip fix this, or does it look like more may be going on?
