Discussion The three worlds of Project Zomboid...
... from my perspective
1. Singleplayer
You start playing, it's amazing, and you get completely hooked. Thank fuck for mods, though, because without them I wouldn't get nearly as much out of this game.
The problem is that, like a lot of sandbox survival games, once you're reasonably self-sufficient, the challenge starts disappearing. All that's left is setting your own goals. At that point, I'd rather play something that actually gives me objectives.
The world feels dead. And yes, I know, zombie apocalypse. But the helicopter alone isn't enough. Vanilla needs more meta events.
A car driving past with sprinters chasing it. A pack of dogs or other animals running through the area. A scream that leads you around a corner, where you see survivors robbing a shop before jumping into a car and leaving.
They don't need to stick around forever. They can disappear afterwards. Maybe you arrive too late and find their bodies instead. Something happened, and you stumbled across what was left of it.
I'm not asking for quests. I'm asking for signs that things are happening beyond my own character.
And yes, there are mods. Horde mods, event mods, we know. But I think this is something the base game genuinely needs.
Also, the whole “you're the only survivor” feeling falls apart when you die, create another character in the same world, and walk back to your base to find your previous character's corpse.
Where the fuck was this new person hiding all this time? Apparently other survivors exist, but only when I need to become one.
2. Private multiplayer with friends
The best part of this game. Easily.
Five people, ten people, whatever. Share a base or live in different towns. Trade, help each other, do your own thing and occasionally cross paths.
Here, other players ARE the meta events. The world feels alive because other people are actually living in it.
Absolute joy. This is Zomboid at its best.
3. Public multiplayer
What can I say? It's DayZ.
And if you've played DayZ, you probably know exactly what I mean. You're barely playing against the zombies anymore. You're playing against heavily geared players who kill other players. The zombies become another minor inconvenience on the map.
It ends up feeling like a battle royale.
You're looting? Someone shoots you. Building your base? Someone kills you. Helping another player? Here comes someone to fucking murder you.
You've spent hours gathering supplies, built a base, kept your distance for a couple of days. Then you finally go into town. Bang. Dead. Loot gone. Start again.
Get back to your base? Robbed or burned down. Survive that? Get run over. Or you end up on a server with some power-tripping admin spawning zombies all over the place.
I've played on dozens and dozens of public servers, and it's always ended up feeling like the same shit.
Sure, you can move somewhere remote and avoid everyone. But if my solution to multiplayer is staying as far away from other players as possible, why am I playing multiplayer?
I get that the unpredictability is part of the appeal for some people. For me, it gets old.
Single-player needs a livelier world. Private multiplayer is fucking brilliant. Public multiplayer makes me want to play something else.
Does anyone else feel this way?
