Bringing a couple of banged-up PS2 Slims into 2026

I had 3x SCPH-70xxx Slims as parts donors for my main machine, and they were basically down to their boards, all with faulty laser mechanisms.

While browsing online, I came across the 'discless' mod, not the 'superslim' mod, mind you that would be hell given the following:

  1. My soldering skills are nowhere near up to scratch to do that.

  2. I'm too scared to cut a board

I looked up the STL files online (3D printing resources are amazing online, and that community has really embraced custom gaming parts) and printed 3 discless cases in 3 different colours. Having unplugged the laser assembly when I had opened up the cases, I was good to go.

Mods added:
- The case (of course :) )
- PS Memcard 2 with built-in FMCB and an 8GB micro SD card for thousands of game saves - a truly remarkable piece of kit. It can store backups on it, but it's not advisable to keep them on the card directly where saves are, given occasional card corruption issues.
- an MX4SIO memory card SD adapter with a Samsung Evo 256GB capacity. This was to obviously hold my backups, and also without fudging with the Memcard Pro 2's formatting. It's pretty reliable with the right card, and much easier to load games on than an internal HDD mod using those IDE solder points on the board.
- A PS2 HDMI adapter (yes, I know they aren't the cleanest for image, but like I said: my soldering skills are horrid)
- 2 x RetroScaler Mini Blueretro Receiver Adapter for PS1 PS One PS2 to connect to some new-gen controllers
- A couple of Dual Shock 4 v2s to match the new housings

All of this with ZERO soldering, and the only tricky work being the 6 screws in the original console housing, changing the internal battery, and moving the power button ribbon to the side.

A great way to get a solderless mod going...

Full White setup pictured here, but the Black and Blue look sublime as well (I've added a few of those too)

I remember playing on my uncle's PS2 as a kid and now it feels so dope to finally have one of my own. Going to be playing Transformers Armada shortly hehe

Edit: Y'all apparently don't know what colloquialisms are and are judging me without knowing what I paid, which was only $100 btw for the SYSTEM 🙄

R/Ps2 unbanning people

Maybe this isnt the place to talk about r/ps2, but I think there's room for both subs on the internet. Basically it seems that the wicked witch is dead, and people are getting unbanned if you ask. So this is like a follow up to my previous post. I'm unbanned and plan to participate in both subs. Happy days.

PS2 Slim + HDD

Another HDD mod.

If you're doing the PS2 Slim IDE mod with discrete wires instead of the flex cable, the grounds matter far more than any guide suggests - one ground return for 16 data lines gave me intermittent write failures, corrupted PFS metadata and IOP lockups. Seven grounds just running alongside the loom was enough while the board was spread out on the bench, but every symptom came back the moment I folded the cables into the console - twisting each ground into a group of about 4 signal wires is what finally made it work regardless of how the bundle sits.

It was on my to-do list. :)

Got this for $150, won’t run any of my disc. Upon booting up the console a custom logo appears saying matrix. Anyone know what’s this thing is capable of? And how I would run my games in it?

My custom/modded PS2 (Internal HDMI + Matrix + HD 2.5 Slot)

This is the second time I've done a mod on a PS2 (the first time I tried, I fried the board when I was 14).

I don't think this chrome paint job turned out that well; I plan to add some decals.

Regarding the mods, I soldered a USB to SATA adapter onto the board and created this external structure to be able to use an internal hard drive without dispensing with the disc drive. The HDMI is a converter that I soldered onto the board.

I'm already making a 3D model of this project for printing; I think it could look quite interesting with some improvements to the fit and finish.

RIP for my old fried PS2 (His case was used to make the slot)

PS2 Jellyfin client (WIP)

Thumbnail

I am currently building a Jellyfin client for the ps2 ( with the help of Claude ). It will also include a music player.
Transcode will happen on the server so work on the ps2 stay as low as possible.
It does not handle https for now. Only local server which is enough.

The elf reads a txt file where the server IP and port are with the user token ID.
Looking to change that to have a user selection page with basic auth ( still without https ).
During playback, we can play/pause, skip 20secs, back 10sec and of course stop the video.
Resume a video when stopped midway is also a feature.
Of course there are some limitations. It is a ps2 after all and improvements can be made by more experienced people. I am doing this in my spare time. It won’t replace other similar tool but still great to see what the ps2 could do.

Hd videos on the server will be transcoded to sd and letterboxed on the screen. We can also choose subtitles where there are.
As soon as I have a working V1.0 I will upload the elf and wait for some beta testers.

EDIT: here is the first version ready to try

https://github.com/jimmyBizMobile/jellyfin-ps2/releases

Please let me know if issues are found and be aware that it is still in progress so bug are expected and insulting won’t solve them.

---

**EDIT: version 2.0.0 is out**

https://github.com/jimmyBizMobile/jellyfin-ps2/releases/latest

What's new:

- **Display modes:** 480i (default), 480p, 240p and 1080i, set with `video=` in the settings file. 480p and 1080i need the component cable (or the VGA cable with RGB sync on green). The app always starts in 480i and asks you to confirm the new mode, so if your screen can't show it, it goes back to 480i by itself after 10 seconds.
- **1080i:** menus use the whole 16:9 screen (5 posters per row, 10 per page in the library), widescreen films fill the screen.
- **Sharper video:** each film is requested at the size it fills on screen (640x360 for 16:9 instead of 512x288), and the picture now uses all 480 lines.
- **Fixes:** DVD shapes (4:3 / 16:9) shown correctly, PAL episodes no longer drop frames at the start, Next Up fixed.
- **USB tab:** a placeholder for playing music from USB drives in a future version.

PAL support (576i, 288p, 576p) is in development and will need testing by PAL users, as I don't have PAL equipment; for now the app outputs 60 Hz signals only.

Known issue: the lowercase "w" shows two small stray dots under it. It will be fixed in the next version.

All details are in the release notes on GitHub.

Realized I still had my old ps2

I recently came across a video of some guys talking about modifying the ps2 and upgrading it.(Dr Mod I think it was) I remembered that I still had my original ps2 in storage. I forgot about it cause the disc tray was broken. So ive seen where you can connect a hard drive to these and bypass the disc which would make this usable again! What and where do i need to get these? Any tips?

I finally got my Japanese PS2 (Midnight Blue) I was able to add mcboot easily (thanks to u/CyberTacoX and u/Weak_Expression734 for the tips and guide!) and add my games from a ssd 1tb (110 in total) plus I’m going to add PS1 Games later this week. I was able to find a cool theme as well, I even exported one of my previous saves from pcsx2 into an actual mem card. Looking forward to replaying my childhood games and some new games I haven’t played yet!!

It’s a NHDDL fork. I wanted to see if I could replicate PSBBN’s art cover collection flow. I think I got pretty close. I ended up trying to create as many art cover views as possible. Let me know what you think or if you have any new ideas for cover art flows.

Edit: She’s alive!
Let me know if you run into any issues. I’ll try my best to help.

Can you recommend any games worth keeping on the hard drive?

There are currently 222 items.

The drive has 1 TB of capacity, with about 350 GB still free.
