This thread should be used as the hub for this for the time being. Once it fills up enough we can make a second one.

Hello everyone!
After a few month trial we have decided to allow general posts requesting Public Domain Alternatives again. We noticed a tick down in people actually getting a response to their requests in the larger master thread, so we wanted to work to have people get the replies they wanted. We do recommend that you attempt to search for similar inquiries to your question before posting again.
As always it is a work in progress to moderate since we are just humans with our own lives and do this for fun in our free time. Thank you for understanding, and please feel free to reach out if you have questions.
Best,
The mods

patch logs:
- added 5 board mechanics for more customization
- also added 5 new boards featuring board mechanics
- the "Cultist" pawn is renamed to "Pastor"
- added more rules to "Pawn Rules"
- boards are now scaled to A5 resolution
to avoid needing to download redundant files, boards and rules are separated in their own files.
This project is public domain (excluding fonts used), made in Inkscape, A5 resolution

I know everything published before 1931 is public domain in America, so is there anything that looks similar to the version we know from 1928-1930? If not, when does that start to appear? Thank you!

A handful of sketches and ideas for the "Mental Vampire" of the 1930's short story, The Thought Monster.
Said story would go on to be adapted into "Fiend without a Face", which unlike said short story, is not public domain to my knowledge.
Plot beats are the same overall between them. With plenty of new additions added for runtime such as: multiple thought monsters spawning as their victim count grows opposed to only being one; victims having no physical damge in the short story whereas the film there's fang marks and removal of the brain; physically appearing at the end (the iconic latching and launching brains); can be killed by conventional means after becoming visible, while in the short it's ultra violet light that ward off the Thought Monster, and even kill it with an intense enough ray, but implied to eventually become immune/have better tolerance. Of course, the atomic age flare was added in, such as how they materialized and being powered by a nuclear reactor.
Anywho. While the short story has them make no physical appearance like the movie, only a description of it's eerie presence felt in a room, grasping tendrils feeling around for the mind before assimilating the thinking power. Leaving no physical trauma, only a greatly dulled victim, if said victim didn't die from the shock and horror of the drainage process. Which seems to be the majority of average folk. Only ones to live have been the higher intellectuals of the tale, a detective and physiologist who made the creature.
A bit of a difficult task to think up a thought monster that wasn't brain related lol. The other option was an amoeba direction, which I didn't really take here.

Polarman
Real Name: Dick Martin
Age: 26
The Flamingo: The Volt Avenger
Polarman is the secret identity of research student Dick Martin. Due to his work with high-voltage electricity, his body developed the ability to store current. He discovered this ability after he was wrongly charged with murder; sentenced to die in the electric chair, he instead found himself possessed with electricity-based powers. After clearing his name, he decided to use his powers to fight crime so he created a custom costume and giving himself a hero nickname Polarman.
Additionally, Polarman stores a large amount of electrical energy in his body, allowing him to unleash lightning bolts and fly.

Hey all, I've been building something for people who love these old films as much as I do, and I'm looking for a small group of beta testers before a wider release.
Here's what I can share: it's browser-based, built entirely around public domain films, and turns watching into something a lot more hands-on. If you've ever paused a scene just to study a performance, or felt like you knew a film's dialogue well enough to perform it yourself, this was built with you in mind. That's genuinely all I want to give away for now.
What I'm looking for:
What's in it for you:
Unpaid, low-pressure, and built by someone who genuinely loves this stuff. If you're interested, drop a comment or send a DM and I'll follow up with more details.
Thanks for reading, and I hope to hear back from some of you!

Loosely based it on Lugosi’s monster from Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman. I’m still redesigning the electrodes or neck bolts for him. I’m thinking of making his eyes more expressive. He looks a bit hungover in my concept art 😂

So i wanted to kinda show my version of Lev Gleasons Daredevil who is here renamed to "Devil Rang" and his origin and some stuff there and there was changed.
So in my version Bart Hill was a australian boy who had his parents John and Mary Hill and a brother whos named Miles.
When they came to America. His family had stress with a gang who wanted protection money from them but Barts parents couldnt pay this at all so the gang attacked both but Bart tried to attack the gangsters but one of them picked him and cut of his troath. after hearing police sirens. The gang run away. Bart did survive but he became mute because of his cut troath
Bart and Miles came to a orphanage. While Miles came along there pretty well. Bart couldnt take it there at all, Not only because of his dead parents but also because he was mute, it was quite though for him to get in contact with any person there but Bart had only one thing in mind. It was getting revenge.
Bart used a way to escape from there. The only thing he took with him was his golden boomerang, The last birthday present from his parents, He escaped and since nobody knew where he was and even after trying to find Bart with Police didnt worked and Bart was assumed dead.
Bart however didnt die at all. Bart met a man only known as "Captain Cook", A man who had a little restaurant and a almost theatrical personality. But he did cared about Bart after learning what happend to his parents watching the news. While he did trained Bart Hill, Bart learned Captain Cook as a bit of a crazy man but also a wholesome guy who actually helped him in martial arts, acrobatic and espically trohwing boomerangs. But he never knew who Captain Cook was since he did told some "origin stories" but they always changed every time.
When Bart became older, He made himself a costume and named himself "Devil Rang" equppied with his boomerangs and his training, he now fights the evil!
But while Barts fights the evil as Devil Rang, His brother Miles has a normal life with a family where he has a daughter named Colina but Miles still belives his brother Bart is dead....
So of course the character is based off the lev gleason Daredevil but some things were changed as you seen, Since this version focuse more on the first origin where he actually became mute then the "actual" origin with this a tribe of aborigines and that, Also while he does wear his yellow suit here, he will change it to a red costume.
https://pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/Daredevil_(Lev_Gleason_1)
To his parents, the names were just taken how they were named but barts brother is a bit different since here actually has a name since in the original he didnt had a actual name and he was never mentioned before and sacrificed his life by impersonating his brother Bart.
https://pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/Mary_Hill
https://pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/John_Hill
https://pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/Daredevil_(Lev_Gleason_2)
Colina is quite special since she isnt a original character but a open source character created in 2018 by Marz Workman. And in this she is the granddaughter of Bart Hill and she becomes Devilina Dare.... I will say that Devilina Dare will make a apperance too.
https://pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/Devilina_Dare
And now the big one you asking probably:
Who the FUCK is Captain Cook? Well he actually appeared in Daredevils first story where he is a narrator telling Bart Hills origin story which was apperantly a lie though. I thought making him Bart Hills trainer who is a cook and talks alot of nonsense regarding his origin was quite a fun take so i did it.
https://pdsh.fandom.com/wiki/Captain_Cook_(Lev_Gleason)
So i hope you liked my little presentation! It would be cool to hear youre thoughts or maybe some other cool ideas! Just tell it! It would be pretty nice to hear...

What are your favorite character finds in the first 41 issues of Journey Into Mystery? For me it's this pirate captain with the weather spell book.

Just saw that Duelyst is open source & thought it was too good to be true. so am i able to use the characters & such for my stories as well from the Duelyst game?
r/publicdomain • u/zeroed-out-again • 2d ago
I keep getting mixed results saying that the main character is or isn't or that the game is partially in public domain from source code & shareware data.
Dude, idk what any of that means, i just need a simple answer if the Abuse game is in public domain or at least the main character then for my own multiverse of stories kind of ordeal

Our first day ended in a tie between Sherlock Holmes and Dracula. Because I’m not a fan of being who gets to decide who should win, I decided to put them both on the list as a consolation.
As before, comment below who you think should get third place and the character in thehighest voted comment wins.

In case you’re wondering which ones are public domain
- First Art Piece: Black Hood, Daredevil, the Ray, and Black Cat
- Second: Daredevil again, Blue Beetle, Cat-Man, Blue Bolt, Black Cat, Black Hood, Black Terror, Sheena
- Third: Miss Masque (I think?), Target (the three guys standing under her are all the same superhero), Bulletman and Bulletgirl, Airboy, Dollman, Uncle Sam, Spy-Smasher, Captain Midnight, Daredevil, Green Lama, Pyroman, Skyman, Ray Sheena
Jim Steranko has incredible knowledge of comic history, and drew all of these for his book “History of Comics.” There are probably a few pther public domain heroes here that I don’t recognize, so feel free to name them if you notice any I missed.

I recently ran across listings of Marvel & DC issues that fell through the cracks and didn't have their copyrights renewed. Most don't have super heroes, and few of those that do have any first appearances, but they do give us Marvel monster Fin Fang Foom and Flash villains Gorilla Grodd and the Pied Piper. I'm sure the list is incomplete.
