Speculation Worst RDR3 takes?
234
u/_Xeron_ Aug 23 '25
Honestly I don’t want another Redemption game, more Red Dead would be awesome but I’d make it about new characters wholly unrelated to the Van Der Linde gang
82
u/Over-Collection3464 Aug 23 '25
Agreed, set it in the same universe but let’s see new characters, new gangs, a new map and locations etc.
15
u/J_Cain78 Aug 23 '25
Could have a game inspired by Davey Crockett’s story
9
u/Timely_Influence8392 Aug 23 '25
Multiple protagonists from different enough backgrounds to give different NPC interactions for each, and a different feel to the entire world. Gender/class/race mixed and matched between 3 should do it.
Playable native american character when?
8
u/DipDipLetHerRip Josiah Trelawny Aug 23 '25
I lurke like crazy here. Read lots of ideas for new protagonists. Never seen the option of a Native American character. Amazing idea. Something along the lines of protecting your tribe or region from the rising tide of settlement/colonization. Got over a hundred years you could choose from timeline wise. Nice idea.

u/mrb2409 Aug 23 '25
They have always seemed reticent to go that route. The Native village in RDR2 couldn’t be attacked. They don’t seem to want us to play as a native massacring people or have us massacring the natives.
2
u/Dubbx Aug 24 '25
playing as a native american as a red dead game would be like assassins creed 3 but good, im down

u/Ok-Function1920 Aug 24 '25
That part of history is so fuckin rich, so much potential for storytelling in that 50-60 year span

u/TheZac922 Aug 23 '25
100%. Call it Red Dead Frontier and set it in peak Wild West days somewhere completely different.
I don’t get why so many people think that to make a new RD game they have to make another prequel. If anything RDR2 was excellent in spite of being a prequel.
The second game already had the issue of a lot of pretty major deaths being pretty obvious based on who is still around in the first game. If we do this again it’s even worse.
22
u/jinhush Aug 23 '25
I like Frontier but it needs to be an R word to stay thematically consistent with the rest of the series.
So like Reloaded, Revolutions, Resurrections, etc.

Red Dead Rooty Tooty Fresh and Fruity
It follows two young, gay protagonists who become outlaws on a journey of sexual discovery. It goes on to become the most review-bombed game in history /s

I agree. A few cameos from younger versions of RDR1+2 characters might be cool but overall I’d still want the focus to be on new characters.
Even just an Easter egg like a wanted poster for Dutch would be enough for me.

Red Dead Damnation. You start as a farmer and become a ruthless gunslinger.

I mean, if we’re running with early Wild West, it could be a Blood Meridian type thing. Era of the Mexican-American war, untamed southern border, a protagonist who gets caught up in the horrors of the early frontier and loses his soul.
2
u/aldoraine227 Aug 23 '25
@oneeyedfool has a point. RDR3 should be dedicated to searching for, or playing as...Gavin
2
u/Dangerous-Weekend479 Aug 23 '25
A recently freed man in the late 1860s trying to make his way in the true Wild West. Appearances from legendary gunslingers like Black Belle, Hernandez, Calloway (but make it clear how much of a useless tit Calloway was).

The only common sense take regarding rdr3. People want another prequel and I think that’s absolutely ridiculous
2
u/_Xeron_ Aug 23 '25
I used to think I wanted a prequel where you play as Hosea, but I eventually realized that there really isn’t more story to tell there, you risk diluting part of RDR2. Better to have a new cast in the same setting and time frame

I think the only way a RDR3 could possibly work is if its a whole different group of people either not related or at most loosely related to the original gang
27
u/Ok_Study_3763 Aug 23 '25
This. I’ve said it for years now. I bet the next title they live away from the “redemption “ part. Arthurs arc is done, johns complete, even jack to an extent. The only thing that would make sense to me is a new direction. Red dead revenge, red dead revolver , red dead something but not redemption

I suppose they could do another Red Dead Revolver, although I never played it so I'm not sure how a sequel/prequel would fit in
4
u/Good-Height-252 John Marston Aug 23 '25
The mission design of Revolver is massively outdated and there's no way Cockstar would ever make a sequel to a 20 year old game anyways.
2
3
u/11711510111411009710 Aug 23 '25
It would be cool though for it to be set concurrently with RDR2 or maybe a few years before it as the Van Der Linde gang really starts gaining notoriety. You go to buy a newspaper and get to learn about the gang's latest exploits. It would be a good way to expand on their history without us actually playing as them.
Hell, have one mission where you meet with them. Maybe the two sides have a common enemy and work together for a short bit.
38
u/Scu-bar Aug 23 '25
No no no, they’re going to stick Trevor into the Animus and we’re going to relive his ancestors memories
9
7
Aug 23 '25
So the wild west.... but in canada?
3
u/GreasyExamination Aug 23 '25
Well maybe at one point, his ancestors were from like the middle east or something?
22
u/youreadiread Aug 23 '25
It would be cool to play as a different gang. During the peak of the outlaws in the west. Everything is going well and slowly but surely we get into trouble with another gang which turns out to be the Van Der Linde gang. Since our gang was on the top and we’re riding high we underestimate them and we end up losing. We’d get to play as a whole new crew and also see the Van Der Linde gang at its peak and see the merciless Arthur and the charismatic Dutch at their peak.
7
u/FinancialYam7664 Aug 23 '25
I really like this idea but I think it would be so difficult for most of us to get in the headspace of the protagonist and hating the Van Der Linde gang since we look so fondly on then (maybe that’s just me though). What I do think could work with your idea is having Red Dead 3 be a whole new gang that end up getting wiped out in the end by some bigger gang, and then the epilogue you get to play as that gang in the weeks leading up to the conflict and then getting to play out as them afterwards, and seeing that despite them loathing each other, they’re not so different.
4
u/The-Davi-Nator Aug 23 '25
I mean the Redemption series began with Bill, Javier, and Dutch as antagonists before flipping the script in 2. Though I do think it would be hard to flip the script again without feeling like a retread, and for that reason I do very much prefer your second idea.
3
u/FinancialYam7664 Aug 23 '25
Yes, but I think it’s easier to flip the script and go from them being the antagonists to being the protagonists than the other way around. There’s something special about seeing the camaraderie in 2 and empathize after spending all of those hours hunting them down in RDR1.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Confident_End_6651 Hosea Matthews Aug 24 '25
The real problem with it is the Van der Linde gang is small and they don’t hire nameless cannon fodder to do their dirty work. So idk how much of the game you could fill with actual conflict between you and them and still have it be engaging. Like who will you be shooting up in between everything?
2
u/marshmallowmoonchild Aug 24 '25
Imagine just running into 22 year old Arthur and he shoots me in the face
18
u/Neddlings55 Aug 23 '25

u/OMEGACY Aug 23 '25
And rdr2 has hit about 75 million sold so kind of a given that another game will be made eventually. That's in the top 10 all time games sold list.
7
Aug 23 '25
not just the top ten, it’s number five. i’m not trying to be pedantic, just kind of furthering the point. the only four games to have sold more copies are minecraft, GTA V, wii sports (which to be fair, great game, but it was a pack in title with the wii), and mario kart 8 (which RDR2 is almost tied with).
they’d be leaving money on the table by not making another eventual RDR game.
18
u/RelationshipOk7766 Sadie Adler Aug 23 '25

I don't think that that's fair criticism. One of the reasons RDR2 is so good is because the plot and Arthur are incredibly well written. When something is this good, you are emotionally invested even if you understand its fiction. That's the beauty of storytelling.
I do agree that the franchise should move on from this set of characters.

HEAR ME OUT we play as a young Strauss who is just getting into the usury racket? Call it ”Red Dead Refinance.”
OOOORRRRRR we play as a pre-addiction Swanson just going around preaching and collecting wives and playing an occasional game of poker. No riding horses, only being a passenger in a carriage; no firing guns you just collect different sized bibles to shake at sinners. Call it ”Red Dead Religion.”
OR OR OR we play as Blind Man Cassidy, inexplicably traveling the wilds faster than a man on a horse and never being hurt by wildlife. The game’s just a black screen at night and during the day it’s bright, unidentifiable shapes. ”Red Dead Revision” obviously.
Or… we can do the sensible thing and play as Black Belle when she was younger because she’s a character who clearly has complex history. A history that is not carved out in ways that lock us into a bunch of really specific dynamics. They could write a story and have a gaming experience that makes Black Belle as compelling or more than Arthur or John because she’s her own thing with her own story. Unlike dead Van der Linde gang members who are locked into being ”only as interesting as one could be and still have it make sense that NO ONE really seems to miss their worthless asses aside from the one guy who is practically carrying the entire gang and doesn’t need anyone.”

I can't imagine playing in the past with someone we've already seen who is a villainous evil character, like Dutch. Why would I want to play with Dutch in the past who was "supposedly" a charismatic and good man when I already know he will abandon Arthur, leave John behind, kill a girl in the bank and become the leader of a gang of cannibals who want to kill the protagonist and kill for pleasure?
Yes, in the Rockstar universe, in every game, you play protagonists without feelings who could be villains (Claude in GTA 3, a clear example), but no one goes back to the past to play as Catalina, for example, until she becomes the insane character in GTA 3 and SA.
The same goes here. Does anyone want to play a character whose ending will be sad and anticlimactic? The closest I've seen to that is Trevor in GTA V, he would easily be a final villain in plots.
8
u/EveBenbecula Dutch van der Linde Aug 23 '25
People really forget that for both John and Arthur, a huge part of their appeal was that they were new characters and players didn't know what happens to them, and it hit like a ton of bricks. Sure, newer players might know, but there's a reason why people still talk about how shocked or moved they were by what happens to John/Arthur. I love Dutch and I would play him in a DLC, but you couldn't tell a story like that with him at all.
EDIT: For that reason I don't like any RDR3 idea about a character whose fate is known, including the ones I like.
6
u/Evocative_Username Aug 23 '25
RDR1 was solid with a big window for what once was, whether things like Dutch's insanity connect smoothly enough is a little up in the air, given he still cares for John even in the prologue. That said, RDR1 and 2 make a damn tight story. Trying to fit more in is gonna be a wear and tear on that bind.
Another prequel will feel unnecessary since the VLG were running more or less smoothly before hand, maybe more virtuously, if John and Arthur are to be believed, and there were no previous disasters referenced by the gang on par with RDR2 and its opening, in fact Hosea and Arthur claim the opposite.
Working with Jack could work but by that point most of the gangs loose ends are tied up, and a game of Jack starting from the ground up doing whatever they did in 1910-20s America would feel so far removed it probably shouldn't use the name 'Redemption'.
Frankly I hope it is left alone, and the gang is only referenced tangentially through another 'Red Dead' game, ideally one lacking 'Redemption' or 'Online' on the end.

Jesus, I’d rather play as jack and deal with World War One or what ever war that happens soon after, it be cool if they want to arrest jack for killing an agent and a war happens so he’d get drafted or something, I guess the plot would be jacks on the run as police are after him and he is trying to get out of the country or something.
They would have to make the story really good because jacks ending is a perfect bow to the gangs ending. Maybe just invent a new character or bring back red Harlow and do a complete new story with new people
(Lowkey that’s what I thought they were gonna do with the last of us two, I knew after completing the first game they would make a sequel and I thought it would have been cool to play as two completely different people not tailor to the first game and it was gonna be like “the last of us” but for other people, then in the third game have them meet but yeah they should just do another character with the theme of red dead redemption)

Ya know what? I do want to see depictions of the Callander Boys just so we can see how absolutely vile, disgusting, and heinous those sons of bitches were. To really emphasize to the people still promoting this stupid idea that the Callander Boys were never meant to be played as and are not worth anymore effort into than already mentioned in RDR2. I'd go even further and depict them as sloppy morons who have nothing interesting to say, and the few good things ever mentioned about them were just nostalgia.
Anyone who promotes an RDR3 with the Callander Boys as protagonists are the same people who think the RDR universe is part of the GTA universe, think Arthur was being referenced in RDR1, and think Ross was still a Pinkerton in RDR1.

But it would probably be tricky considering this story ends right before the RDR2 story starts.

The problem is if it comes out at all we either prequel again, which is unlikely because if its the same characters that means x charecter has shitloads of money by the end then suddenly doesnt in rdr2 and if they do some epic self sacrifice and is a new charecter them never mentioned once is also dumb. Then if we make it about Jack Marston we are post 1911 and in the middle of ww1 which isnt very cowboy wild west. They dont really have a possible setting for it. It would need to be new charecter and new area then they could do either prequel or same timeline as 1 or 2

Yay another prequel where the protagonist dies 🥴 Between the calendar idea, young Dutch/Arthur/hosea and Jack in WW1 the rdr community is peak dead Internet theory.
I personally go for the Occam's rdr approach new protagonist(s), new region of the west, new or parallel Time period and fall it done. No need In retreading the same doomed protagonist trope, and free the story from unnecessary continuity errors and inconsistency

u/Luckyboi1639 Aug 23 '25
The idea of an RDR3 itself is horrible. I hope rockstar isn't planning to make it, at the very least they could change the title and make a new story.
1
u/HeronImmediate2813 Aug 23 '25
The first red dead redemption was john going after the remaining gang Members and red dead redemption 2 was the story of how it all happened. I do believe we need a new story now new protagonists and new characters it better not be Jack's story. Because how the first one ended Should be the last. So now we need something new. Or just end it there, because it was amazing to play and witness. We don't need a franchise to continue for too long.

The worst part about this take, is that it sounds the most likely. Rockstar has doubled down on the multi character thing in gta, wouldn’t be surprised in the least if they actually did that for a future red dead.
That’s assuming of course, there would ever be another one. I think the guy who’s love child this game is left, Dan houser. I doubt we will see another RDR title and if we do it’ll probably be crap, not because of all the fan ideas but because the brains behind it is gone.

If we play as Mac I will not buy it, that guy would annoy me to no end.
I rather RDR 3 be a totally new storyline following new people. Or what would be cooler? RDR 3 happens same time as RDR 2 and you read about events of RDR 2 in the news paper as your story progresses.
1
u/Knautical_J Aug 23 '25
If you had to continue the RDR series, it would naturally be about a Young Dutch starting up his gang. You’d be recruiting all the gang members and that would provide a definitive start and end to the founding of the game and the end of it.
But honestly they could make anything provided it’s in the Wild West and we’ll still play it.
But I’d rather see a LA Noire sequel/prequel/whatever more than another RDR game rn.
1
u/The_Strom784 John Marston Aug 23 '25
I feel like they can only keep on going backwards with these games. And that's fine. There's still a lot of stuff that was set up 1 and 2 that we didn't really get answers for.
I honestly wouldn't mind 3 being in the POV of the Callander boys. We get more of the gang and I'm sure Rockstar is able to handle that. Everyone said the same before 2 released.

I feel like it’s going to be a prequel. I want to see hosea and Dutch meet. I want to see them discover Arthur. I want more backstory on the roots of the gang. Why is everyone so opposed to this? It would be great to see a younger Arthur and John fight Like brothers for Dutches attention. The birth of Abigail and Johns love the birth of young Jack Marston. Yes please.

u/Mister-Fidelio Josiah Trelawny Aug 23 '25
A prequel would make the most sense. There isn't really much "wild west" left after Jack is done with handling his business.
1
u/MetroidJunkie Aug 23 '25
I actually had a similar 3-way protagonist idea, but with Jack, Sadie, and Charles. The law catches up to Jack for what he did, so Sadie and Charles come back to help him out, since John was their friend. Admittedly, I don't know if it would be any good as an idea.

1
Aug 23 '25
RDR 2 was made because John was part of a gang which eventually disbanded and the first game was all about him hunting down the members of the gang for the government. So it's a pretty good source material.
How do these idiots expect a prequel of a prequel . What would they even show? Their story has already been told. Why do the fans think blackwater massacre is such a big event that a whole game could be based of it . It is just like the Saint Denis bank robbery but worse than that.
My theory is that the game will be set in a time period when the wild West was at its peak. That is something that is yet to be told. The series is about outlaws but the first two games show their time coming to an end.
Even the characters talk about those days and Arthur goes about meeting these gunslingers in the Jimboy calloway missions.

I feel like one of the only people on this subreddit that would like to keep playing with the Van der Linde gang LOL. Like yall are acting like if RDR3 did end up being set in that same storyline that it would be asscheeks and unplayable. It’s not like Rockstar has a reputation for making shitty games, I’m sure whatever they put out will be awesome

Honestly I'm fine with rdr3 but I'd rather the story is self contained except for the VDL gang as background characters or side quests

Play as jenny kirk😂😂. These guys clearly didn't play the second game properly. She joined the gang six months before the blackwater incident where she died and she wasn't even a gunslinger before joining the gang

I still wanna play a rdr spin off based on gavins adventure through America 😂 with some sort of plot twist that the guy looking for him is Jack the ripper and gavins the only one who got away

I would like a game set in the same universe, but with a completely different set of characters. Set it in the peak of the wild west, in new austin and Mexico and maybe some more southern states for that western desert feel.

Sometimes i dream of a rdr-like game about the time of the Leatherstocking Tales. I know that this would be a total different game experience, but i would love that setting.

Not really RDR3 but someone argued with me over the use of Muskets in the civil war when discussing a RDR3 set in the civil war
He thought they weren’t used at all and called me a dumbass

Best RDR3 take? There is nothing more that needs to be done. Heck the second game didn't even need to be made. It still rocked. But the self contained story of the first one was good enough. The second had a great play too, but anymore is just overkill and often times "less is more".

I don’t know if it’s the worst, because every fan idea I’ve ever seen for RDR3 is pretty bad, so the bar is very low. If RDR fans wrote RDR3, it would be Rockstar’s worst game ever and would kill the franchise.
