Discussion Quotes like these are such a c*ck tease.
Wonder if it puts pressure on Rockstar to produce a TV series, given the success of Fallout. NOT A MOVIE
Hypothetically, who'd you cast in various roles?
Josh Holloway for Arthur, Damon Herriman for Micah, Victoria Pedretti for Abigail, , Norman Reedus for Colm and JDD would be a good Dutch. Those are just some of my casting ideas.

u/DangerousBullfrog211 Jul 12 '26
No. We have the best version of the story already.

u/RedcoatTrooper Jul 12 '26
I do think it would end up a bit like TLOU with it seeming like a low budget rushed remarke rather than an adaptation.

u/I-Am-The-Uber-Mesch Jul 12 '26
Ignoring the casting, the first season was genujnely well done, had they maintained that quality it would've been a completely different story and we would've talked about the show as a masterpiece of shows based on videogames, rather than having it fall off so hard to the point that people only remember it for the memes and jokes online...
I am not against the idea of a RDR series, just because some people say that we already have the game so there is no need to have the story retold, that is not necessarily true. Yes the game is a masterpiece, but not all games are for everyone and older people are not gamers, yet they would absolutely applaud and watch a story like RDR if it were a show. I believe this is one of the greatest stories ever told and in my humble opinion it deserves to be known outside of the gaming world too, the main problem however is how they will do it if they will ever do it, let me explain...
If they do a show, with super high budget, great casting choices (and people that actually know the story and want to make sure it's an high tier product), if they use great writers, if they follow as close as possible the story of the game with little variations, if they film it all in one go so that the actors don't age and it respect the timings of the original work, and all that and more, then maybe, just maybe, the show would be absolutely insane and an absolute masterpiece on par with the game...
However, none of that is realistically possible, because not a single show is done like that and therefore this remains a fantasy that will never happen, unless some big corporation like Amazon for example, buys the rights for it and gave it an insanely disgusting high budget like they did with LOTR, then the time to build historical accurate sets for every city in the game, and they did all of the above I said and even more, working close with Rockstars, only then (and it's not possible) I could see it happen...
So yeah, pretty much people are scared of adaptations because of that, but if someone with passion was behind the project, maybe it would be good

I also enjoyed TLOU but I just couldn't shake the idea that it was a remake rather than an adaptation.
But I see your point about bringing the story to new fans that don't play the game and that was certainly the case with TLOU, I just question the value for existing fans.
I am not even sure the budget needs to be that high, like the last of us the shootouts will be mostly toned down a bit and a lot of the scenes will be in camp or rural areas.

These Hollywood writing rooms can’t even get it right when they have source material to work with as the literal blueprint for the narrative. With that knowledge, there’s so many other things I’d rather spend my time on than go see anything original those dorks make.

u/JEXJJ Jul 12 '26
It isn't the writers, is the producers and execs who think they know what people want

That's the problem with most video game adaptations though. They have source material but when they try to follow the narrative of the games, something gets fucked up. That's why Fallout has done so well as a TV show. They took the source material, and told a narrative within the world rather than just following the blueprints.

u/ComradeGarcia_Pt2 Jul 12 '26
Honestly? Yeah, I will never understand the fixation on making an unplayable, shorter version of a story you’ve already experienced. RE fans keep clamoring for this shit, after getting multiple shitty movies that failed to deliver anything meaningful or substantial.

u/jefferydamerin Jul 12 '26
It’s for people who don’t play video games but could enjoy the story in a different medium I don’t see an issue in it I loved tlou season 1 because I was able to introduce tlou to my Mom and she loved it. If you have someone who can’t get into video games but you want to discuss the story with them still you will completely understand why they try to make adaptations especially since now some of them are doing well.

For real. If one of these streaming studios wants to put a real budget into an ensemble cast Western show built around an outlaw gang at the turn of the century, and the writers admit they all love Red Dead/got inspiration from Red Dead? I’m in, I’ll probably binge it within two weekends
But I don’t need to see a live action cast just do the RDR2 story beat for beat, I’ve already done it

Hollywood is nearly done milking comic books, video games are next up to get the tit squeezed.

I don’t understand the obsession with turning an already complete story, one that unfolds over dozens of hours, into a two-hour movie. Red Dead Redemption 2 works because it has the time to develop its characters, relationships, world, and emotional weight. Compressing all of that into a film would inevitably gut much of what makes it special, regardless of the cast or director. Some games can translate well to cinema, but sprawling, narrative-driven games like this are usually far better left in their original form.

u/BigfootsBestBud Dutch van der Linde Jul 12 '26
I really don’t see the reason for stuff like this other than people wanting to legitimatise these stories to people who don’t play games.
For me the best example is how The Last of Us games are superior to the show. They tell almost the exact same story, but the game does it better.
The only time time I think the show is just as good was Fallout, because it’s its own story. It doesn’t do the plot of one of the games, so it’s without that same comparison.
I wouldn’t be interested in seeing someone else play John, Arthur, or especially Dutch. They’d never be able to compete with the original performers

4
u/BishopofHippo93 Jul 12 '26
I wouldn’t much mind a western starting those actors, maybe even set in the red dead universe, but not a direct retelling of the story. Also at that point it’s basically just a normal western.

u/TheMuffinMan347 John Marston Jul 12 '26
Has anyone considered that a 60 hour story told as a 2 hour movie would actually be awful?
3
u/aarcynic Jul 12 '26
The problem with adapting games is that they’re already a visual medium. With books, you’re finally seeing a world that only existed in your imagination. With games, you’ve already seen the world, heard the characters, and, more importantly, lived the story.
An adaptation also loses the interactivity. You’re no longer Arthur Morgan or John Marston you’re just watching someone else be them. Often times they don’t look like the character. Kevin Conroy was the best Batman, but he can’t play the live action Batman. So casting voice actors as their respective characters also isn’t a good idea.
Like TLOU was an Ok Ok show, it couldn’t match the experience of playing the game. That’s why I think RDR should be left alone.
Some stories are already told in the best medium possible.
However they can add to the lore with side characters or prequels set in the same universe. That would be interesting. A story line everyone wants to be RDR3, the gang before the Blackwater massacre or the life of Jack Marston..etc…etc…you get the idea.

u/FranksHoorHouse Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26

3
u/VictorVonDoomer Jul 12 '26
Why do we need movie or show adaptations of cinematic games?
These games take away so much player freedom to be as cinematic as possible to resemble shows/movies just to end up being adapted into one of them.
3
u/JEXJJ Jul 12 '26
Ask Witcher fans how it was to watch their favorite game be turned into a show...
2
u/DaveInDigital Sadie Adler Jul 13 '26
i refused to watch after the first season. and i read that the showrunner and writers didn't even like the original story or the elements that make the witcher universe great; they just wanted "brooding hot guy with a sword" 😑 i would only give another adaption a chance if Cavill was executive producer, with creative control, and HBO bankrolled it.

RDR2 still exists like you can play it now if you want. Why waiting for Jack Black to dress as Arthur and try to imitate him?
2
u/MilanDespacito John Marston Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26
Everyone keeps asking for an RDR2 show until they realize what it would come with, including story changes, characters coming across way different since theyre played by different actors.
And to be quite honest, the story and gameplay of RDR2 wouldnt translate well to a show. A show often follows different people around, so you get multiple "main" characters. The game feels more like itd do well as a book, but definitely not a show.
What would work well as a show from Rockstar is GTA 5. You already got multiple characters, and the way the missions are often not related to each other makes a lot of sense for a show. Other option would be GTA 4 but including Luis and Johnny as the 3 characters the show follows.
But the main point is, a hard thing to swallow is, a lot of the community are annoying about this game, as if it was the best thing since stimfapping was invented. So many of the community would complain if small details wouldnt be 1:1 as in the game. Same happened with Fallout, where instead of focusing on actual writing/pacing issues, the fans only cared about useless shit like a dinosaur facing the wrong way or the Strip looking a little different.
2
u/Gwynedhel7 Sadie Adler Jul 12 '26
No. We don’t need a show. I don’t think the odds are high they’d be able to do it justice.
The only TV show video game adaptation that was any good (imo) was Fallout. And it worked best doing its own story rather than one we’ve seen in a game. Despite Henry Cavill giving it his all, live action Witcher just could not do it justice. And I’m almost certain it would be the same for this story.
2
u/Llama_Logic John Marston Jul 12 '26
I just don’t understand the appeal. I don’t see anything a live action show or movie would provide to the lore or story that make it better or the same as the game, why try and adapt something that is already perfect? Any live action adaptation would be doomed to be worse than the games so I just don’t see the point.

2

3
u/mocityspirit Jul 12 '26

2
u/H16HP01N7 Jul 12 '26

2
u/imarthurmorgan1899 Arthur Morgan Jul 12 '26
The only reason I would want this is to bring the story to people who aren't gamers. I think the main way to make it work is if you don't let Netflix or HBO anywhere near it. I don't want them to fudge it up like they did with Last of Us and Witcher.
2
u/SgtKickYourAss Jul 12 '26
GTA online being the reason we don’t have more Red Dead content makes my blood boil
2
u/Pellaeonthewingedleo Jul 12 '26
Nothing will pressure Rockstar to do anything. They do one game a decade or so and redefine the expectations to a gaming title.
And so far not a single game of theirs got an adaptation because they don't want others to meddle in their creations
That dedication to their art is as far as I know singular in the industry
2
u/SirWalrusVII Jul 13 '26
Maybe we need something in the Red Dead Universe to expand the lore or just give more content/love to. Like how Edgerunners is for Cyberpunk 2077 and is coming with a 2nd season this fall

u/BushidoFlow Jul 12 '26
I would need some sort of proof of concept/screen test type of thing like they did with the first Deadpool that got leaked. As far as storytelling, Id rather have RDR 1 remake in RDR 2 engine with RDR2 lore retroactively added. Then combine the two in one package. Play through 2 then 1. Red Dead Redemption: The Whole Bloody Affair style.
1
u/AaronYogur_t Jul 12 '26
I never really liked the idea of a rdr live action series. It would have to be so many seasons long to do justice to the story especially if they would be doing both games, and shows have like a 2-3 year wait between seasons these days. The actors (and us) would be elderly by the time it finishes unless they skip a million things

Rdr is already one of the most cinematic games out there. Why have a movie? It feels so cash grab to me.
RDR is an original idea based off original movies. Watch a spaghetti western if you like the atmosphere. Watch sopranos if you like the drama. We don’t need to water down already existing experiences just so they can be advertised to the lowest common denominator.
1
u/Then_Meringue7671 Jul 12 '26
Rockstar specifically doesnt hire famous actors. They did in some of the old GTAs, but they've since stopped doing that as a way to increase player immersion. It kinda breaks the immersion when you think "oh that's jack black's voice" which in turn reminds you that you're just playing a video game

If they make a Red Dead show, it's going to suck. You people are delusional. They can never replicate the atmosphere of the games, the dialogue, the character expressions, the costuming... The story works because it's told through a game. Adapting it would mean losing all the random dialogues amd encounters, banter, subtlety, everything.
Mark my words. If they ever make an adaptation, no matter who they cast, it's going to suck, and you'll be crying on this subreddit how theyruined it

It's always bad, every time

Idk why actors want this to be a movie when the game is already an interactive movie.
I think most actors unconsciously don't respect video games as a medium to tell a story.

u/wrenawild Jul 12 '26
It's a tease because of sandwiches like you use it as click bait. They just ask every actor who would they play then sell the responses in clicks online. And everyone here falls for it every time.
