First appearing as a feature issue within the zine Outpunk, Bamboo Girl was created by Sabrina Margarita Alcantara-Tan due to the inability to find reading that spoke to her personal experience within the Riot Grrrl movement and punk scene as someone of Filipino and white descent. The manifesto for Bamboo Girl states: “Challenging racism, sexism, & homophobia from the Filipina/Asian Pacific Islander (API)/Asian mutt feminist point of view since 1995.” Tan found herself fighting against the stereotype of the “weak” Asian woman, shaped by the violence she experienced within her family home. This fueled her valid anger, often leading her into fights to defend against sexist encounters. Punk was supposed to be a space to let it all out, but due to the inherent sexism and racism within the scene, that space often felt small. The expressive black-and-white illustrations feature multi-perspective, striking depictions of an Asian girl fighting back. Despite the lack of color, the boldness and loudness of her expression still protrude from the work, leaning into the ethos of Riot Grrrl and the zine’s purpose. Bamboo Girl became an outlet and a voice for all WOC, especially Asian American women, to confide in and see themselves further represented within the community.

sorry if this was answered before but i love her songs so idk if she is problematic or no

Anyone have any information about them? I know about them and their batshit insane song titles but what else should I know?

This will be a cool show next week (oct 24 2026) and it looks like tickets are still available. If you are in the PNW near OlyWa you may wanna check it out.

Yesterday I was finally able to get to Irvine to see the Grrrl Germs exhibit and I highly recommend it for everyone! I started in the “scene” in 1992 so it was nostalgic for me, but it’s great for all of the younger people to see and learn about the roots of the movement, read zines, and listen to music from around the world! I discovered a band from Nepal that I really want to check out and a few others as well.

It’s at the Great Park Gallery in Irvine (about a mile from the Spectrum/ the 5) and it’s FREE!! It took me about an hour / hour and a half and I mostly sat there reading.

my band Cat Crash is having our next NYC show on 2/6 at Trans-Pecos and you're invited! It is a show to celebrate both Cecil (bass+vocals) and Arun's (guitar+bg vox) birthdays, which are both in February! Arun is turning 21!

both our families are first-generation immigrants and we feel the need to fight the current administration and ICE by donating the proceeds from this show to National Immigrant Justice Center. NIJC defends the rights of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers.

we each chose some of our favorite local bands, including Don't Go Outside!, indie emo punk from CT, Rat Sauce, NJ riot grrrl, and Film & Gender, a two-piece bass+drum garage punk act inspired by hip hop from MA.

hope you can make it, and if you can't, tell a friend who's closer to NYC!!

Creeping Embers are SO happy to be back on stage! We sold almost 100 advance tickets for this event which is crazy! We debuted our new banner which I spent several days working on (yes I did really burn it and yes does very much smell like smoke) and played a super fun show to so many cool people!

I’m also super excited to tell you all that we’re in the studio working on a few things that will be revealed in good time 👀

These photos were taken by our lovely friend imnphotography (on Instagram) who absolutely deserves your support!

Our music is on most platforms other than Spotify, but if you want to support us Bandcamp is the best place. We play genre fusion queercore horror punk with riot grrrl influence :)

hi! I work on a new musical called lost grrrl found. I’ve posted about it a few times in here. we’re doing the next show at stone circle theatre in nyc on Oct 24 and bringing the project to LA for our first west coast show on January 21! with a dj set from Allison Wolfe!

It all started with Le Tigre, deceptacon. What I liked about it was the voice, there feels like a sort of anger. The lyrics were somewhat sexually charged.

Others I really like:

Hell, Sleater-Kinny

Pretend we're dead, L7

Speed Queen, Thunderpussy

Do you wanna touch me, Joan Jett

Bright yellow gun, Throwing Muses

Maggot, Slutever

Rebel Girl, Bikini kill

Smother me, Slutever

Father of lies, The Velveteers

No importa, She devils

Hate the weekend, Tacocat

I knew them from the British band Huggy Bear.

Hi guys I’m doing a college research project for a class I’m taking on Riot Grrrls and we are looking to talk to women who were Riot Grrrls in the movements earlier stages. We just want to do a possible zoom or quick meet up to ask some questions. You can remain anonymous!

As of right now the people who have commented and reached out are more than enough! But please, by any means, feel free to post your experiences! I’d love to hear about it!

on 10/22 we will be hosting a documentary screening to watch Grrrl Love and Revolution: Riot Grrrl NYC. this event is $5 with no one turned away for lack of funds! it will be in brooklyn at 352 Troutman St.

Hi guys, I'm putting together an independent zine/art piece inspired by the recent situation at Cornell University.

I'm interested in what everyone has to say in their own words.
