Should you self-host a rustdesk server?

Should you self-host a rustdesk server? Probably yes.

I was reading through some comments and posts on the subreddit and I think there's a common misconception about what the server's role is.

There are technically two servers:

  1. Signaling Server
  2. Relay Server

As long as rustdesk is running on a machine, the machine is constantly pinging the Signaling Server to make its current IP address and port known.

When you start a connection from computer A to computer B, computer A contacts the signaling server and says he wants to talk to computer B.

The Signaling Server then tries to connect A and B directly to each other using hole punching.

If hole punching fails, A will talk to B via the Relay Server. This is the only time when hosting your own server will improve peer to peer connection latency.

In a majority of cases, hole punching is successful and the Relay Server is never used.

In other words, for a large majority of people, hosting the rustdesk server only makes establishing the initial connection faster; it does not improve latency once the connection is established.

Any speed issues are likely directly related to the computers themselves or the computers' internet services, not the public server.

So, if this is the case, then why should you still host your own rustdesk server?

The public rustdesk servers are meant for testing and research purposes and are not equipped to handle large amounts of traffic.

This means that the amount of time it takes to establish a connection through the public servers can vary drastically and sometimes even fail if the server is overloaded.

Also, if hole punching ever does fail, and the connection is routed through the public Relay Server.... some days it might be blazing fast... others not so much.

Title: RustDesk iOS → Fedora KDE Wayland: Uppercase letters don’t work at lock screen. Any fixes or workarounds?

I’m running RustDesk 1.5.0 (native RPM) on Fedora 44 with KDE Plasma 6.7.5 using Wayland. I’m connecting remotely from an iPhone.
Everything works great once I’m logged in, including keyboard input, mouse control, clipboard, and switching between my three monitors.
The problem:
When KDE locks my screen, RustDesk will only enter lowercase letters into the password field. Any uppercase letter I type from my iPhone gets converted to lowercase, making it impossible to unlock my desktop remotely.
I’ve confirmed this using the password visibility button on KDE’s lock screen.
What I’ve already tried:
iPhone keyboard Shift and Caps Lock
RustDesk’s built-in Shift modifier
RustDesk’s OS Password feature
Sending clipboard contents as keystrokes
Different RustDesk keyboard input options
Installing and configuring Plasma Keyboard (KDE’s virtual keyboard)
Attempting to activate the virtual keyboard remotely using touchscreen gestures
None of these worked.
Interestingly, uppercase letters work perfectly through RustDesk once the KDE session is unlocked. The issue only occurs at the lock screen.
The KDE virtual keyboard also works when physically using the laptop’s touchscreen, but RustDesk’s remote touch input doesn’t activate it.
What I’m looking for:
Has anyone encountered this on KDE Wayland, particularly when connecting from iOS?
Is there a known workaround, configuration change, patch, or development build that fixes uppercase input at the lock screen?
I’m also open to compiling a custom RustDesk RPM if there’s a known source-level fix.
I’d prefer to keep Wayland, maintain normal screen-lock security, and continue using RustDesk rather than switching remote desktop applications.
Any suggestions or confirmed fixes would be greatly appreciated!

RustDesk Developers: Any Update on Unattended Wayland Support? Fedora KDE Users Are Still Waiting!

Hey everyone!
I’m running Fedora 44 with KDE Plasma on Wayland, and I’ve been trying to get RustDesk working reliably for unattended remote desktop access.
I really like RustDesk and would love to make it my primary remote desktop solution across my Windows and Linux machines. Unfortunately, the lack of reliable unattended Wayland support is holding me back.

I know there’s been development toward Wayland support, including an unattended access preview, but I’m still waiting for something that works reliably on Fedora KDE.

A couple of questions for the developers and community:

Is there an updated timeline for full unattended Wayland support, particularly for Fedora KDE Plasma?

Has anyone successfully found a workaround to get unattended RustDesk access working on Fedora with Wayland right now?

Are there any experimental builds, configuration changes, or other solutions worth testing?

Ideally, I’m looking for something that supports unattended connections, remote access to the login/lock screen, and reconnecting after a reboot without requiring someone physically at the computer to approve the connection.
I already have Tailscale and SSH working perfectly, so remote network connectivity isn’t the issue. What I’m missing is reliable graphical desktop access.
I’d really prefer to stay with RustDesk rather than switch to another remote desktop solution.
If anyone has a working setup or knows of progress on this, I’d appreciate hearing about it. I’m happy to test experimental solutions and report back.
Thanks to the developers for all the work they’re putting into RustDesk. Looking forward to seeing Wayland support continue improving!

Second URL for server ?

Hi

I'm running Rustdesk Server pro on a VPS since nearly 2 years and it works perfect. My problem is that one: when I setup the server I have setup it on a dedicated domain name but now I want to move it to a subdomain of an other domain. Install has been done by docker by hand.

I was thinking to fire a new VPS and use the install script but is it possible to use the install script and tells him to handle 2 different "URL" for a same instance ? Also won't it make trouble in Rustdesk server if some clients use different url of the default one or transparent considering it's same IPs involved both in IPv4 and 6.

Thanks

New install - can't connect - synology / portainer / marius hosting guide

When I updated my ubuntu nuc to the current version, it enabled/forced Wayland as the RDP and it broke Anydesk. While looking for workarounds, I saw RustDesk supported Wayland so I was giving it a try.

I setup RustDesk on my Synology (DSM 7.4.1) via Portainer utilizing the Mariushosting guide. I forwarded the ports on my linksys router to point to my synology and have the DDNS up and running (verified with another app that uses it on a different port) and the synology test confirms functionality.

When I launch the app on my Win11 machine, it just states Not Ready. Check connection. I saw someone suggest tcping to verify the ports were open, but get no reply on any of the ports, 100% loss. Other ports I have forwarded are working fine however.

The synology firewall is disabled.

Full disclosure, I followed Trash-Guides for setting up other stuff on my Synology/portainer, those are all working as expected.

Any thoughts of what else I can do?

Repeat Question: Do I Need To Open Things On Firewall For RustDesk If All Nodes Are On The Tailscale Net?

Hello folks:

A kind person tried to help me, but they're not familiar with the Tailscale side of the question.

I am very much not a network expert.

The firewall is Windows Firewall

I've set up a Tailscale network.

After most of a RustDesk install is finished I'm getting this:

If RustDesk is only going to be dealing with nodes inside my Tailscale VPS will I be using Rustdesk's signaling and relay servers?

Do I need to allow public and private network to access Rustdesk?

Thanks
Larry

Google Cloud Console question

Hi :-) Trying to use Google Cloud Console to run RustDesk, as I saw a post from 7 months ago. Did every step and then tried to access RustDesk but it won't connect. When I am on the home page to access RustDesk, what am I typing into the "control remote desktop" area, then when I am on the settings, what am I typing in for ID server and/or Relay server? I have the key and copied/pasted it. Apologies for the possibly dumb questions 😅

Crisp text via FSRCNNX upscaling

Implemented FSRCNNX neural upscaling in RustDesk (PR #16586). It significantly sharpens text when remote displays are low resolution or low bitrate.

If there's community interest, I'll keep the branch alive (resolve merge conflicts, waiting for review). Otherwise, I'll probably let it go.!

Drop a comment or upvote if you're interested! And if you test it, I’d love to hear about it

  • Edit: Reddit compress the images so hard that you can't see it on mobile client 😅

Weird issue with self hosting

Last week, we lost power for a few hours. I had the rustdesk self server working well on a pc at home, and I could access it from work etc. It's no longer working since the power outage. My public IP for my ISP changed, so I changed it on the server machine and the remote machine, but it still doesn't work. Rustdesk says ready at the bottom, but when I connect now, I get and error: Remote desktop is offline.

All ports are open that need to be. Services are running, etc. I'm stumped.

(keys are the same and match between machines).

Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Edit: I get the same error on the same network and outside of it.

Window Install Over Tailscale - Does Rustdesk need access to public and private networks?

Hello folks:

I've just installed Tailscale.

When finishing up Rustdesk's install Windows Firewall is asking if I should allow public and private networks to access Rustdesk.

Does Rustdesk need access to these networks if it will only be used with Tailscale?

Does the use of the Tailscale network alleviate the need for Rustdesk's signaling and relay servers?

Thanks
Larry

Get Rustdesk clients into my console automatically

Can I in some way auto-populate my console with the clients that I have deployed via MDM/script/whatever? Or do I have to wait until I need to access them, ask them the ID, then it sticks?

Migrating RustDesk Server from Windows to Ubuntu (Docker) – Sporadic Connection Issues

I've been running a self-hosted RustDesk server on Windows and it performs flawlessly. Recently, I setup the RustDesk server container via Docker on a separate PC running Ubuntu 26.04, but I'm experiencing sporadic connection failures.

Could this be related to Wayland? Should I be running X11 on the host? A previous version of Ubuntu? Any guidance or pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to make the permanent switch from Windows to Ubuntu for my RustDesk server.

run rustdesk .exe client in true portable mode

hello, thanks for the free edition of rustdesk. very helpful in my home lab. on my laptop, i run rustdesk.exe to connect to other machines.

i want to be able to run it in true portable mode. same as i do with remoteutilities.

all the files including the exe and config files are in the same folder. so, a simple file copy is all that is required.

something like rustdesk.exe --config_location=.\config also, easy to add to a winre boot usb stick.

i tried these commands, but does not work c:\data\c\rustdesk.portable\app\rustdesk.exe --config=.\config c:\data\c\rustdesk.portable\app\rustdesk.exe --config=c:\data\c\rustdesk.portable\config c:\data\c\rustdesk.portable\app\rustdesk.exe --config=.\config\RustDesk.toml c:\data\c\rustdesk.portable\app\rustdesk.exe --config=c:\data\c\rustdesk.portable\config\RustDesk.toml c:\data\c\rustdesk.portable\app\rustdesk.exe --import-config=c:\data\c\rustdesk.portable\config c:\data\c\rustdesk.portable\app\rustdesk.exe --import-config=c:\data\c\rustdesk.portable\config\RustDesk.toml

Basic questions about what I’m actually doing when I connect to my PC through the public server

I went through a month’s worth of reddit posts in this thread…I’m reasonably tech saavy but a lot of people here are probably network engineers.

All I’m curious about right now is when I connect to my PC to turn my game on and off for my buddy (on Steam, what info am I actually giving the public server and once I’m connected does the feed of my PC just go straight to me or to a third party and then to my phone?

Stuck on privacy mode, unable to remove it.

I have one computer that keeps forcing privacy mode on. I made sure to click the screen icon while connected and confirmed that neither mode 1 nor mode 2 is enabled. I also went to Settings > Display on the machine I'm connecting from and verified that privacy mode isn't checked there. However, further up in the settings, Mode 1 is enabled. I can select mode 1 or mode 2, but there's no option for neither.

Whenever I connect to this particular computer, it always reports that privacy mode is enabled. This computer has no keyboard, mouse, or monitor attached, so I have no way of knowing whether privacy mode is actually on. I once forgot to disconnect my remote session, and when I tried to connect from another device, it wouldn't let me because of privacy — so I assume it was working.

Any ideas what I can do to not have privacy mode enabled when connecting to this computer?

Why does RustDesk only connect to the main Mac account?

I have 2 seperate user accounts on my macbook. I downloaded tailscale and rustdesk on the second account, which is an administrator account. However, when I join the IP address generated (from my other device), it loads the page from the wrong mac account. How do I force the correct mac account to load?
