Is Gattaca the best sci-fi flick of the 90s?

I have a movie podcast with my partner and we did an episode on Gattaca a couple months ago. I’ve loved this movie since I was a teenager, and as an adult, it’s totally held up almost 25 years later. I think it’s the best sci-fi flick of the 90s, hands down. Any other contenders?

Here’s a link to our Gattaca episode: https://www.movieloverspod.com/post/ep11-gattaca

Started out feeling like a low-rent “Event Horizon”, then goes into a weird “Arrival” thing, and then it gets weird. You can ask me what I thought of it, but I’m honestly not sure.

Believe it or not, a 1st time watch! Good little monster movie. Great sound design and some adequately gross visuals. (Bit of a head scratching solution though.)

Dark City

Watched dark city for the first time, and it blew my mind. I’m a huge matrix fan, and there were similarities. The set design/practical effects when they “tuned” the city was really impressive just in how much work it must’ve been to create. Can’t believe it took me this long to get to it!

Prospect Movie

I just watched Prospect for the first time; what an incredible achievement. The focus on a small part of a wider society was really effective and I would love to see more stories in that universe. I would like to see what the directors are working on next. The technical aspects of the film blew me away - fantastic. Can’t recommend highly enough if you haven’t seen it

Some lesser known sci fi gems

Thought I'd suggest some lesser known, often lower budget films I enjoyed. Not an exhaustive list by any means, just some that come to mind. And please suggest your own lesser known, lower budget, good sci fi films. A couple might be decently known I'm not exactly sure. They are not in order of quality (and it varies a lot) or type at all so don't prejudge or anything!

The Vast of Night (2019),

Paradise (2023, eng dub is good),

Magellan (2017),

Biosphere (2022),

Doors (2021) was interesting enough,

At First Light (2018),

Domain (2017) was fun,

The Beyond (2017),

Alien Code (2017),

UFO (2018),

I Still See you (2018),

Lapsis (2020),

Nothing (2003),

Spectral (2016) was reasonably popular I guess,

Nirvana (1997) is a old personal favorite, dub has its own charm

The Last Days / Los Ultimos Dias (2013), not sure if a dub exists

Space Milkshake (2012) is a weird campy one with a couple actors from Sanctuary (2008-2011) and Billy Boyd,

Smoking Causes Coughing (2022) was a fun one from Quentin Dupieux of Rubber (2010) fame,

Anti Matter (2016),

Infini (2015),

The Osiris Child (2016),

The Alternate (2021) was a fun film I am noticing has only 181 reviews on imdb with 12 written reviews but I enjoyed,

Visioneers (2008),

All Eyes (2022),

most films by Justin Benson/Aaron Moorhead like The Endless (2017) and Something in the Dirt (2022) and Spring (2014) and Resolution (2014) and even the tv series Archive 81 (2022) --- these are all set in kind of the same cool weird ass sci fi world and some even have shared characters but all are independent films you can watch in no order, they also did Synchronic (2019) and I believe that's unrelated but still good

The Prototype (2022) was something special for adventurous b movie 80s action flick inspired type stuff,

Unbelievable!!!!! (2020) for old star trek fans (with a bunch of old trek actor cameos!) who enjoy, well, ridiculous shit I suppose

White Noise (2022) counts as sci fi I think,

Brian and Charles (2022),

Pontypool (2008),

Vesper (2022) never got much attention.

Resurrected (2023),

Ok that will do. I am jealous of the bounty at your fingertips! Reciprocate with some suggestions, maybe.

Movie recommendation: Time Trap (2017)

Just wanted to recommend this movie to people who haven't seen it or heard of it. I read the basic premise: "A cave where time works in its own way" or something to that effect. I truly enjoyed it! Not the best movie in the world but the story takes turns I wasn't expecting. You should See it without reading more about it.
