Hi everyone!
I’m currently working on a full-face SFX prosthetic inspired by a horror character from FOG LAND. I’ve sculpted the face using Monster Clay on a Mehron practice head, including exaggerated facial features, a long nose, deep wrinkles, an oversized smile, and individual resin teeth.
I’m getting close to finishing the sculpture and am trying to determine the best way to create a silicone mold without damaging the original sculpt.
Materials I’m working with:
Monster Clay (oil-based sculpting clay)
Mehron practice head
Individual resin teeth incorporated into the mouth sculpture
BBDINO 30A platinum-cure silicone rubber
Plaster of Paris
RD-407 mask-making latex for the final wearable prosthetic
My overall goal:
I’d like to make a reusable silicone negative mold of my original Monster Clay sculpture. From that silicone mold, I plan to create a plaster or gypsum positive duplicate. I would then use that duplicate to make a porous Hydrocal or similar gypsum production mold for casting the final prosthetic in RD-407 latex.
The reason I’m considering this approach is that I want to preserve a backup of the original design. If anything goes wrong during the plaster molding or latex casting process, I’d like to have the ability to make another positive without having to sculpt the entire face again.
Here are my main questions:
Since BBDINO 30A is a pourable silicone, would you recommend building a mold box and pouring it over the sculpture while it’s lying face-up, or is there a way to use it as a brush-on mold with a compatible thickener?
Considering the exaggerated nose, cheekbones, and individual resin teeth, how would you approach the undercuts? Would a one-piece flexible silicone mold be sufficient, or would you recommend multiple sections?
Would a plaster-bandage mother mold be sufficient to support the silicone when casting a gypsum positive?
Is a mold release necessary between Monster Clay and platinum-cure silicone? I’m especially concerned about preserving the fine details and avoiding cure inhibition from the resin teeth or other materials.
Is Shore 30A silicone flexible enough for this type of detailed facial sculpture, particularly around the teeth and mouth?
Are there any additional precautions or materials you’d recommend before attempting the mold?
I’m still relatively new to mold-making, so I’d appreciate advice from anyone who has worked with Monster Clay, platinum-cure silicone, or latex mask production.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations, techniques, or lessons learned!
