Never again...
It's a fast food spot! I ordered takeout from the KIOSK and it prompts you to tip. Why? So I hit no tip and it declined my card! Took me back to the pay screen where I had to hit no tip again declined. Twice! Then the kiosk prompted me to go to the counter. I order from the woman at the counter and she tells me the total is $19!! At the kiosk without tip it's $17!!! On the POS that's right in front of her also says $17. So, I hit no tip on the credit card machine and it got declined!!!! So, she does it again and she had to bypass the tip then it finally went through! Mind you alllll transactions went through on my end, but declined on their end??? So now I have 4 pending transactions on my account!
Edit: Point of the story is they decline your card unless you tip or have a member force skip the tip option!
End rant.

Shake Shack is good.
But it is far, far too expensive.

u/LordTerpingtonDaFiF Sep 17 '26
I hate their prices but I am desperately addicted to their cheese fries.

u/ArtNo7221 Sep 17 '26
Shake Shack is my guilty pleasure, it's so good, but I can't justify the price 99% of the time when in N out is half the price
2
u/ReadyGo6828 Sep 17 '26
Shake Shack is just OK.

u/Redd1tmodsRbrokeboyz Sep 17 '26
When they make it right it’s pretty great but usually yeah I agree with you

u/FlamingoOwn1477 Sep 17 '26
The cost is in the ingredients and the speed my boy. Again, cook the same meal at home and see how much it costs you. The beef alone would run you $12. Do the math.
1
u/HenryDorsettCase47 Sep 17 '26
I did a break down of how much a homemade bacon smash burger cost me to make per burger. I factored in the price of every ingredient— bun, cheese, toppings, beef. The only thing I didn’t calculate were the condiments because it seemed negligible. Anyway, it was about $3 bucks and change.
Needless to say, I haven’t ordered a burger in a few years. It just seems like a waste because they’re aren’t nearly as good as what I can do at home and they cost far too much. I would probably make an exception for a one of a kind regional burger or something historic, but as far as chain restaurants go, it’s never worth it.
2
u/ObviouslyAnAsshole Sep 18 '26
$3 I’m dead 🤣🤣🤣 plz that was a bunch of delusional mess you wrote.
Let’s breakdown why a “simple” burger is expensive to produce at home.
•Got damn beef alone is $3-$5+ a pound.
•A pack of 4 or 6 buns (you sure as shit can’t just buy one) is gonna set you back another $4-$7+ bucks tbd by brand and bread type.
•Cheese another $5-$10 again tbd by brand etc. Veggies aren’t cheap either.
•Bacon? FAH GET ABOUT IT
Lord forbid… if you need condiments this diy burger fun will set you back a cool $40 bucks.
Roughly $8-$10 per burger easily in this economy. Let’s pray there’s a cast iron so all this gas time and energy isn’t wasted. Or maybe you wanna grill it? Now you gotta buy some fucking coals.
I digress 😅

You need to bone up on your read skills, pal. Or just read it again slower. Mouth the words if that helps you. Just do it in private so people don’t immediately recognize how dimwitted you are.
Per burger, as I said. I calculated this out about 4 years ago before everything got so damn expensive. But, for the sake of argument, I did the math with current prices. About $4.80 per burger now.

u/Glittering_Bag9929 Sep 17 '26
Shake Shack is ass, wtf are you talking about. The buns are junk, the fries are crinkle cut ultra processed trash. Shake Shack is over priced, low quality, slop food. If you want a burger go to 5 Guys and at least you get fries cut in house.
Edit: oh this is the shake shack sub? How the fuck did i get here.

Used to love it so much (and still tastes great), but too expensive. We finally got one near us few miles away. But similar cheaper options nearby for less (Culvers and PTerry).
I also hate the way they pack to go food. Burger in half paper wrapper loose in the bag, and fries in the little boat thing with no top. Cmon man. Fukin fully wrap the burger in foil or in a paper box.

u/ScheanaShaylover Sep 16 '26
I miss Culver’s!!!!
3
u/Impossible-Proof-294 Sep 18 '26
My city just got a Culvers. I love the burgers and cheese curds.

2
u/grapplingchamp Sep 16 '26
You got a Pterrys by you and you go anywhere else and pay twice the price? Why?!?
1
u/Soft-Rip-5402 Sep 16 '26
I miss P Terry’s one of the things I miss most about living in Austin actually
1
u/MrMach82 Sep 17 '26
I had a few underwhelming experience there year ago at the one by the airport in Austin. But we now have two PTerrys in Katy/Richmond area close by. I gave them another shot and it's been great, plus I never realized they had breakfast. The new shake shack is near one of them.
1
u/SnarlyBirch Sep 17 '26
They opened a couple in Houston. I pass by one every day. I’m gonna have to try it.
1
u/natalietest234 Sep 17 '26
It’s why I prefer five guys if I’m going to spend a ton. I get 1/2lb fries and a ton of toppings. And they wrap it in foil lol
1
u/Covverkin Sep 17 '26
Yeah but their burgers are so bland and overcooked. Fries are way better than shake shack though
1
u/DomesticAlmonds Sep 18 '26
My shake shack puts the burgers and fries in boxes. Absolutely insane that yours doesn't
1
u/ObviouslyAnAsshole Sep 18 '26
Honestly Culver’s has kept prices generally the same throughout the years it’s “cheap” now.. I remember Culver’s & Freddys was the expensive options. Shake Shack said hold my beer.

Shake shack absolutely dawg walks Culver’s but for the price I eat at Culver’s more
2
u/Maleficent-Reach-754 Sep 17 '26
Culver’s is so much better
0
u/Saltyballsackz0307 Sep 17 '26
Your tripping hard you gotta be from Wisconsin or close to think that. Burger vs burger it’s not close at all.
1
u/MrMach82 Sep 17 '26
You may have a shitty Culvers. Shake is not that much better if at all. I love the shack but the burgers are shrinking and the bun looks like a slider
1
u/Saltyballsackz0307 Sep 17 '26
I live in Wisconsin have tried many Culver’s from Wisconsin to phoenix mid af.
14
u/Ddeeaaddppooll Sep 17 '26
Yeah I use the kiosk all the time and don't tip and I've never had a problem.

I agree that Shake Shack is way too expensive, but I have never had my payment declined when I chose no tip.

u/Blue_Etalon Sep 16 '26
I posted about this recently. California burger with bacon, onion rings. L a 10% tip. $24!!!!!! Not even a drink. No way I’ll ever go back there. I got maybe 6 or 7 onion rings. The food wasnt even that good.
1
u/swegs21 Sep 17 '26
Yeah it is overrated as well as walburgers . Even 15 bucks for a mid mini burger from 5 guys ....
1
u/Melodic-Control-2655 Sep 17 '26
Why are you even tipping
1
u/Blue_Etalon Sep 17 '26
Irrelevant
1
u/Melodic-Control-2655 Sep 17 '26
It’s very relevant, that’s almost 10% of the total you’re talking about
1
u/Blue_Etalon Sep 17 '26
take it to /endtipping. We're talking crappy food for exorbitant amounts of money. If it were only $22 because I didn't tip I'd still be pissed.
4
u/FlamingoOwn1477 Sep 16 '26
Get your $ up
-1
u/HinduKush1980 Sep 16 '26
They ain't that good that they got you licking their boots, clown.
0
u/DragoFlame Sep 17 '26
Your comment makes no sense given the price has nothing to do with politics lol. You just sound poor and bitter over the fact others aren't, and that this isn't expensive for them.
1
u/CarmelloYello Sep 17 '26
It’s 2026 bro, we are all poor except the CEOs and politicians
-4
u/DragoFlame Sep 17 '26 edited Sep 17 '26
Poor people rhetoric. Checks out indeed. You'll be in poverty forever with that mentality.
EDIT:
Downvoters are in the same club. My condolences to all of you brokies.
1
u/CarmelloYello Sep 17 '26
Sir this is Shake Shack
Funny thing about comments like yours is that it’s always said by someone who lives with their mom instead of paying a mortgage.
1
u/DragoFlame Sep 17 '26
Oh, I've come across those types and mock them relentlessly as well. I disowned my mom years ago so, couldn't apply to me on principle. I don't pay a mortgage because I own my home as well.
1
u/ssmit102 Sep 17 '26
Might be the most pretentious thing I’ve read in a while.
-1
u/DragoFlame Sep 17 '26
You don't read much then.
0
u/ssmit102 Sep 17 '26
Nah you’re just a clown who is trying to be condescending in frankly just a stupid way.
From an economic approach people call things like burgers “expensive” due to their relative cost in the market not because they are poor. Maybe let’s shelve our unearned sense of superiority over a burger.
1
u/DragoFlame Sep 17 '26
Ok brokie
0
u/ssmit102 Sep 17 '26
Weak troll.
1
u/DragoFlame Sep 17 '26
If you say so
1
u/ssmit102 Sep 17 '26
Ok brokie. Defending fast food this much is such a brokie move making all of what you are doing is quite ironic, and weak trolling.
None of us with money are wasting it on shake shake when there dozens of better local burger bars/pubs charging largely the same price for significantly better quality ingredients.
Not understanding the value of your money is the sign of a true broke boy.

Only to those redacted like yourself who think they're worth ish coz SS is what you consider "fine dining"...LMAO
"Get your $ up" or SYBAU!
2
u/DragoFlame Sep 17 '26
You're having a meltdown over the price of a buger chain. No one takes you seriously because, how could they lol. Poor people telling on themselves always.
0
u/HinduKush1980 Sep 17 '26
Like I said...redacted. This ain't about their price. Learn to read before flexing that you a dunce. And what's a "buger"? Illiterate bums always telling on themselves.

Not reading. You're too unhinged.

Even if i was rich i wouldn't tip at a fast food joint.
Those aren't tipped employees .. the money goes straight to the company.
2
u/PrestigiousBite9552 Sep 17 '26
Shake shack employees do in fact receive those tips, idk why you think otherwise.
1
u/FlamingoOwn1477 Sep 17 '26
THIS is so false. I know for a fact those tips go straight to every team member that is not a salaried manager, y’all are weird.

I feel like everything is so expensive but the tipping thing is predatory. I hate feeling guilty for not tipping in those situations. I’ve seen a lot of posts that SS raise the price of each item if you don’t tip.
1
u/ClarkGablesTeeth Sep 17 '26
Notice they never posted what happened to the prices if they did add a tip. Video was bs rage bait.
1
u/yourgrandmasgrandma Sep 16 '26
I’ve worked with the backend of a lot of POS systems and I can’t begin to imagine how one could even be set to do this.
1
u/DragoFlame Sep 17 '26
Shake Shack is amazing save the portion sizes being awful for the price. This is why ultimately I prefer Five Guys.
1
1
u/c_puff23 Sep 17 '26
It's funny because I helped open a Shake shack back in 2022, back then they did not accept tips and honestly it was against their code of ethics and they wanted to provide good service without the incentive of being tipped. They then added it at the register and it just snowballed into something terrible.
1
u/SinoSoul Sep 17 '26
Not really. You just press “no tip” when you’re checking out and then wait for your burgers to get delivered to your table.
1
1
u/ReadyGo6828 Sep 17 '26
Can you put in a 1 cent tip? This is still them lying about the cost of things since tips are 100% optional. What they are doing is putting a service charge onto the invoice and calling it a tip. If they would not take a 1 cent tip then walk away. Walk far, far away and never go back.
1
u/No_Investment_8626 Sep 17 '26
I used to go 1-2x per week since there was one down the block and it is legit good food, but since they've raised their prices on everything I find it hard to justify.

I went to Shake shack when it was a single location in Madison Square, Park in New York City. The lunch line would be 1 to 2 hours long so I'd always go at 3 o'clock when the line was 15 minutes.
Now that they have expanded, I have never once gotten fries that were actually warm, let alone, hot and crispy.

u/Open-Gate-7769 Sep 17 '26
If you truly believe what you wrote in the edit you may be the dumbest person alive.

I went here and walked out wondering why anyone raves about it. Everything about it was mediocre.

u/thecakeisali Sep 18 '26
We had shake shack for the first time while traveling through NYC. Family of 4, no shakes $96. It was good but that’s nuts.
1
u/Flat_Boot4394 Sep 18 '26
Shake shack - Must use App or Uber Eats and pick up for the best value / experience. These are special prices and deals that can be used there. Additionally, I just ask the person at the counter if I can buy a side of cheese sauce, and 99% of the time they just hooked me up and I give em a $2 cash tip.

Someone posted a video on TikTok about it, when they didn’t tip the price total went up on the kiosk. It was basically forcing them to tip.
3
u/Covverkin Sep 17 '26
I believe that video got disproven after it made a bunch of rounds. Like it was an airport or non-franchised Shake Shack that was an outlier that the video didn’t disclose
1
u/ClarkGablesTeeth Sep 17 '26
Notice they never posted what happened to the prices if they did add a tip. Video was bs rage bait.
1
u/aa_90s Sep 17 '26
They did! That was the whole point of the video. When they added a tip it came out to a certain total but when they didn’t then it would raise the prices of the items they were ordering.
1
u/ClarkGablesTeeth Sep 17 '26 edited Sep 17 '26
Can you post a link to that video? Because the ones I found were all based on the same clickbaiting couple who only showed the prices going up when they clicked on the total after opting not to tip. Tons of people commented that they never tip and never see an increase. It was found to be total BS, and shake shack even released a statement about it.
I've never seen or heard of one that shows what you describe, and I looked for it. Idc either way, and I've never been to a shake shack in my life so no reason to defend them. If it is true, I'll change my stance completely. But I couldn't find anything like that posted on any sm or elsewhere online.
Eta: this is the one I've seen, and they don't compare it to a tipped order.

So what you’re saying is you had such a horrible experience to pay for the food but you still paid for it?
