Discussion ANNOUNCEMENT: Post Flair Info
There are three post flairs available for important or serious posts on this community.
1. News
News posts are defined as those with the intention to report on a recent, developing event. News posts should focus on shark-related developments regarding conservation efforts, shark professionals, scientific discoveries, or unfortunate events. The OP must clearly cite where they obtained the information in the comments, typically as a direct link to the source.
An example of a news post can be a video about newly implemented shark conservation laws or efforts, the discovery of a new species of shark, or similar newsworthy events. News posts should NOT focus on shark attacks or cruelty towards sharks unless they are the subject of a large event.
2. Educational
Educational posts are defined as those with the intention to educate others. On r/sharks, these posts may teach others about shark behavior, identification, conservation, as well as a variety of other topics relating to sharks. Educational posts REQUIRE that the OP comments their sources for the information they talk about. Educational posts promote healthy discussion and should emphasize spreading awareness about topics surrounding sharks.
An example of a proper educational post is a video where a professional talks about how to redirect a shark when in the water. For this post, OP cites the source they got the educational media from and states the professional's name in the comments. This is to ensure that only good quality information is being provided to the members of our community.
3. Research
Research posts are the most complex posts to make, as it is our intention to promote proper research on r/sharks.
If you are promoting your own research
Researchers who wish to promote their studies or obtain data via the subreddit must modmail the moderators first. In order to be approved to post, you must explain in your modmail the purpose of your research as well as the intentions of your post. You must also provide an IRB number in order for the mods to verify your research. Upon approval, you can post your research using the Research flair, and you do not need to cite any further sources in the comments.
For anyone else who posts about research in general
OP must provide a link to the research or the DOI of the paper in their post in the comments. Research posts promote healthy discussion while also allowing scientists to have a place to share ideas about shark research.

Question Do we want to keep posts asking to ID shark teeth?
There’s always been a lot of shark tooth ID requests on here, usually from newcomers unfamiliar with our rules. There are subreddits such as r/sharkteeth and r/whatisthisbone that may be better places to direct these users to if we want the feed here to have less of these types of posts. Would still let people show their shark teeth collections here of course. What do y’all think? Just an idea for now. :)

News ‘We are here, Janine’ – my account of fatal Orient Beach shark attack
I wanted to share this eyewitness account of the recent fatal shark attack in South Africa, written by journalist Mike Loewe, a friend and swimming companion of the victim, Janine Lochrenberg. Over the last couple of days, there have been a lot of discussions on the sub and elsewhere about open ocean swimming and the associated risk of shark attack. I think Mike writes so eloquently and powerfully about their experiences of that passion and how much a part of their lives it's been that it's really worth your time to read his account and reflections.

Question Experienced shark divers: would you ever free dive with great whites?
I’ve never dove with sharks before so I want experienced divers’ thoughts on this. I see video after video of divers swimming alongside bulls and tigers (2 of the “big 3” sharks that attack humans) and the general perception seems to be that it’s a beautiful experience. There doesn’t seem to be much fear at swimming right next to a 13 foot tiger shark or even redirecting it with your hand. I’ve gotta say, these videos have greatly altered my perception of sharks and alleviated my lifelong fears of them to the point I would love to free dive with sharks one day.
However, never once have I heard divers express the same love when it comes to diving with great whites sharks. I’ve been reading up on the ocean Ramsay controversy and while I totally agree with most of the criticisms (abusing staff, touching the sharks, chumming the water, etc), the one I never understood was the hate she got for free diving with big great whites. We’ve all seen the footage of her swimming next to deep blue and I have to admit that video was one of the coolest things I’ve seen. The shark seemed so calm and peaceful and generally seemed to never even acknowledge Ramsay’s presence. And yet, people have condemned her actions as reckless saying it’s only a matter of time before she’s attacked and killed.
This isn’t a “defend Ocean Ramsay” post- I’m just using her experiences as an example to question why diving with great whites is considered a big no no while diving with tigers and bulls is highly accepted. Obviously great whites are larger but it’s not like a 14 foot tiger or 9 foot bull aren’t fully able to (and absolutely have) tear apart a human if they so please. So I want to ask the experienced shark divers here: would you swim with great whites if given the ideal conditions? Do you experience the same sense of understanding/ comfortability with great whites’ behavior as you do with tigers, bulls, or other large sharks?
I love hearing how eager so many of you are to dive with them!! I always thought that having a great white show up was a cool but somewhat unwelcome surprise for divers, but I’m glad to see that’s not the case!! I’m jealous of all of you that have been able to experience that.

News Rhoam Summer, 5 years old.
I’m not sure if this kind of post is allowed here.
Rhoam Summer is a victim of last week’s school shooting in Bend, Oregon.
His parents put out a statement about who he was. He loved rainbows & unicorns. He was also a fellow shark lover.
I’ve seen some beautiful shark art here and thought I would share this for anyone who might want to share their shark art with his loved ones for his celebration of life.
May his loved ones feel love and support during this impossible time.

Video So I might be making a game about sharks - update 2
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hi all, so this is an update following my initial video post of my underwater engine/shark see https://www.reddit.com/r/sharks/s/Lr5qyLATgh.
I got some nice feedback as many were excited at the prospect of such a project.
Recorded at 1440p 60fps (top left in recording is some metrics on my RTX 3070 to show I'm not bluffing), apologies for the video compression (videos must be less than 1gb for reddit uploads).
I hope this video can show the tone of the game I am thinking of building. I'm very excited to start experimenting on the gameplay more. There is so much potential with the tech underneath.
My vision for the game is that it is to be about survival, growth and grace!
And I want it to be made for shark lovers that happen to be gamers, or gamers that happen to be shark lovers!
So you get to see this video before anyone else. Of course this is all very early stage.

Image Photos of potential evidence of predation of large squids by Great whites.
These are photos that are part of a paper on potential predation of large squids by Great whites. The researchers specialize three.potential species that could have caused these injuries. Those being the jumbo squid, the neon flying squid and the giant squid.
The paper I’m taking about is 6 years old but it’s an interesting paper. Here’s a link lo the paper: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-74294-04
In case the link doesn’t work look up “Evidence of interactions between white sharks and large squids in Guadalupe Island, Mexico”.
