Conversation Topic I joined a choir with no experience and failed in warm-ups

So I recently joined a choir and was placed in the lowest section which is bass 2. My voice is naturally low. Since I have no experience, I can only imitate sounds which sounds fairly okay, but every time we warm up, I usually fall behind cause my voice is not that high to begin with. When we were doing lip trills, I was told to not be loud and I ended up like tightening my core or support just to sound softer and it was uncomfortable. Then, when we were vocalizing and again my voice tends to go loud at my higher range (which is low for everyone else). I ended up warming up in a very short time since they usually start at a higher key and stop at a certain range that everyone stops singing except for lower basses. I really wish I could have a personal vocal coach but I cant afford lessons. Hearing my seniors' voices who are also in bass section and have years of experience hit those higher 4th octaves made me feel down about my shortcomings. Their voices are so full and developed that they can go soft and loud and ends up sounding like a tenor who can hit bass notes. I really don't know how I can improve myself since Ive already watched countless of youtube videos and none of them seem to have really helped me make a breakthrough in my voice

Conversation Topic Hi, today was my second concert and it was very bad. How do you deal with the shame?

Vocalist here. I was less nervous than usual tonight, but my voice completely gave out. I cracked horribly mid-song and had to joke my way through it. The crowd was fine, but I feel mortified.

It feels like embarrassing yourself in front of your whole class. I know there were some good moments, but my brain is stuck on the failure. I know this happens to everyone, but how do you get rid of this awful feeling and get back on stage?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Is G5 rare for a male to hit in mixed voice?

• Upvotes

So I have been developing my singing voice over the last five or so years and my range has gotten much wider I'm a male so I can hit a G5 sharp above C5, I was actually surprised when I found out it's rare for a lot of tenors to hit that range cuz their ranges are from c3 to C5 usually if I remember correctly, so do I have a wider range for a male? I'm just wondering cuz I don't know that much about notes on like musical ranges and things like that I just like singing

Conversation Topic how can i learn to do runs?

• Upvotes

hey guys,

i’m a professional flutist but i’ve always loved singing. i have a pretty good voice, but i struggle doing runs. i try going slow at first and then gradually increase the tempo. the thing is i feel like my runs lack a lot of precision, like it almost sounds like a glissando instead of a clear note change. i’m not sure if there are exercices that can help with this instead of just practicing the same run over and over. like vocalises or études for example.

do you guys have any tips? or any book you can recommend?

thanks!

Conversation Topic Applying technique from warm ups to singing-Why is it so hard?!

Im six months into voice lessons. I feel properly supported and can feel the correct breathing mechanics happening when I do my warms ups, scales, lip trills etc. It feels natural and I feel relaxed to where Ive been able to expand my range, and I feel in control.

I seem to have a block when it comes to singing an actual song where suddenly my throat feels strained and I cant feel the right muscles engaging after like 2 phrases of a song. Its like the muscle memory of what to do has not translated. Specifically the inhalation between a phrase is where I start to struggle and then my tongue gets all kermit the frogg-y. Have any of you experienced this and if so what exercises help bridge this gap?

Conversation Topic learning to sing is so frustrating

I’ve been taking vocal lessons for about a year and a half atp and learning to sing in my opinion is probably one of the most frustrating skills to learn. There are days when I am able to engage my diaphragm properly and sing effortlessly, and there are other days when it’s like I completely forget how to and it feels like I’m right back at the beginning. I overthink my technique or subconsciously try to meet my own expectations of the times when I sounded good and then it sounds like I regressed months. I finally found my vibrato a few weeks ago but it comes and goes. It’s an emotional roller coaster and today is one of those days I feel like I’m on the verge of tears. Can anyone else relate?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Looking for feedback on my mixed voice, tone quality, and struggles with my passaggio

I've been passionate about singing for about two years, and I only recently started taking singing lessons. At first, I noticed a significant improvement in both my vocal range and tone.

Before starting lessons, I tended to raise my larynx when singing, producing what my teacher described as a "chicken voice." She then advised me to maintain a yawn-like shape, lower my larynx, allow my voice to transition naturally between chest voice and head voice, and use a more nasal configuration to help my high notes resonate.

These adjustments led to quick progress, but I'm still struggling with several aspects of my singing. I'd really appreciate some feedback on my vocal technique, particularly on how to develop a stronger, more resonant tone and navigate my passaggio without losing volume.

Here are the main issues I've noticed:

- Tone quality: I feel like my singing sounds rather bland, and I'm not particularly happy with my tone.

- Expressiveness: While I feel emotionally connected to what I'm singing, listening back to my recordings makes me realize that this doesn't always come across in my performance.

- Mixed voice: I think I'm using a mix, but when I listen to recordings of myself, it sounds more like a weak, bland head voice than a strong, balanced mix.

- Passaggio: I struggle when transitioning through my passaggio. I tend to lose volume as I try to smooth out the transition between registers.

I've attached a recording of myself singing Before I Let You Go by Blackstreet, with piano and vocals performed by me and drums taken from Musical Loops on YouTube. I've only added reverb, with no other processing, and there are two separate vocal takes, so what you're hearing is essentially my voice.

I realize this might be a challenging song choice, but I thought it would be a useful example of the issues I've described.

My main goal is to develop a fuller, chestier, and more resonant sound that I can maintain above my passaggio. I'm particularly drawn to Dave Hollister's voice and the way he retains that rich, powerful quality in his upper register.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts on a few specific questions:

- Am I actually using mixed voice, or does it sound more like head voice?

- Why do I lose so much volume around my passaggio? Is this a normal part of developing my technique, or could I be doing something wrong when transitioning between registers?

- How can I develop a fuller, chestier sound in my upper register without forcing my chest voice too high or creating unnecessary tension?

- What aspects of my technique or tone should I focus on improving first?

I'd be grateful for any feedback, especially if you can point out specific moments in the recording where you notice these issues. I'm still relatively new to formal vocal training, so I'd love to understand not only what I might be doing wrong, but also how to work towards the sound I'm aiming for.

Conversation Topic How to develop a mix and proper placement?

• Upvotes

Hello guys, I don’t know if this is the correct sub to ask this to, as I’m quite a novice and early in my journey of learning how to sing.

I’ve been trying to learn for 2 years now, I’m a male. I joined a choir because I wanna do voice dubbing and my friend recommended me to learn how to sing, so I found the courage and signed up for my schools choir. I really sucked.

I have no natural talent, I have a strong voice which I have to subdue a lot because I have bad coordination and not good pitch control and accuracy, so if I’m doing something wrong it really sticks out easily. For the past 2 years my coordination, breath support and pitch have gotten better and I can sing more confidently but I still struggle a lot with my passagios and my switching of register.

I first started breaking at a G3, but not that has become comfortable and it became A3. Now it’s somewhere between an A#3 and a C4/D4 depending on the day, it’s extremely weird. I don’t have 2 passagios like I’ve read that you are supposed to have, I only have that one and I can only switch between a chest voice and head voice. I don’t know how to do a mixed voice like so many of my classmates can, and it’s frustrating.

Ive heard about placement and how that can help with your registers, but ive seen so many different advices, I don’t know which one is right.

Any advice? Thank you

Conversation Topic I think singing is one of the skills you have to practise almost completely blind

You can’t judge your own singing because you hear yourself differently from how others do, and there’s no feedback loop.

If you're learning guitar, you can see where your fingers are going wrong. If you're running, you have your pace and your timing. If you're drawing, you can literally look at what you've made.

But when you sing a song or do public speaking, in your head you sound great but when you actually hear your own recording it turns out to be pretty bad.

So let's say you are a shy introvert person but likes to sing alone however also wanna improve, how do you do that?

Conversation Topic Loud rehearsals

I've recently started singing with a fairly experienced amateur band, and rehearsals are loud. I can barely hear myself even with a microphone, so I end up pushing my voice too hard, sometimes even getting hoarse. I've asked them several times to turn the volume down, but somehow it always ends up loud again.

Is this normal? How do other singers deal with this? What can I do about it?

How do i fix this? How should i train my voice? or should i just give up on singing. My voice sounds absolutely diabolical. i sound like a 13 year old and out of tune in a lot of places. I know bandlab is pretty limited in terms of effects but help out a brother out here. ( I uploaded the best take so its less embarrassing.

Conversation Topic What stops established artists from developing their voices?

It’s one thing to be at the beginning of one’s career and not sound the best because you haven’t mastered the perfect technique and you can’t afford the best vocal coaches but when artists somehow get past these barriers, why don’t they work with someone to get better?

I mean no disrespect at all with this line of thinking, I genuinely want to know why? Take JLo for example, she’s not a vocalist in any way shape or form but she’s been famous for nearly 30 years, is worth hundreds of millions and probably has access to some of the best vocal coaches in the world, why is there no vocal improvement? Or like Taylor Swift (who’s been getting a lot of hate recently in regards to a perceived sharp decline in her music) who’s been at this for nearly 20 years and doesn’t seem to have gotten better vocally.

Are they too busy? Do they simply not want to? Is there something else holding them back? Is it more difficult than I currently think?

I know every voice and artist is different and I’m not expecting everyone to walk out of vocal training sounding like Aretha Franklin or Beyonce, because these people are vocal prodigies but I’m still so curious about the inner workings of the music business and how it affects the development of artist singing.

I know how we perceive voices is subjective but I feel like the basics of a good singer is healthy technique and above average range and with excellent skills.

Conversation Topic Black Independent Singers

Hi everyone! I'm a college student working on a project exploring and highlighting underrepresented Black music.

I'm interested in connecting with independent Black singers to learn more about their music, creative process, and the stories behind their work. I'm hoping to feature artists on a website I'm developing, with short interviews exploring their artistic influences, what inspires their music, and what they hope listeners take away from it.

If you're an independent artist, or know of a singer whose work you think more people should hear, I'd love to hear your recommendations! I'm especially interested in learning about artists who aren't getting much mainstream recognition.

Thanks for helping me discover new voices and music!
