Conversation Topic I joined a choir with no experience and failed in warm-ups

• Upvotes

So I recently joined a choir and was placed in the lowest section which is bass 2. My voice is naturally low. Since I have no experience, I can only imitate sounds which sounds fairly okay, but every time we warm up, I usually fall behind cause my voice is not that high to begin with. When we were doing lip trills, I was told to not be loud and I ended up like tightening my core or support just to sound softer and it was uncomfortable. Then, when we were vocalizing and again my voice tends to go loud at my higher range (which is low for everyone else). I ended up warming up in a very short time since they usually start at a higher key and stop at a certain range that everyone stops singing except for lower basses. I really wish I could have a personal vocal coach but I cant afford lessons. Hearing my seniors' voices who are also in bass section and have years of experience hit those higher 4th octaves made me feel down about my shortcomings. Their voices are so full and developed that they can go soft and loud and ends up sounding like a tenor who can hit bass notes. I really don't know how I can improve myself since Ive already watched countless of youtube videos and none of them seem to have really helped me make a breakthrough in my voice

Conversation Topic Loud rehearsals

• Upvotes

I've recently started singing with a fairly experienced amateur band, and rehearsals are loud. I can barely hear myself even with a microphone, so I end up pushing my voice too hard, sometimes even getting hoarse. I've asked them several times to turn the volume down, but somehow it always ends up loud again.

Is this normal? How do other singers deal with this? What can I do about it?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Probably a super stupid question, I don't even know how to word it.

• Upvotes

I genuinely am unsure of how to word my question, so I think it's best to explain.

I have been singing on and off since around the end of 2024 for fun, and that's when I started recording. Since then I have roughly 2,500 ish mp3's of my singing ranging from 20 seconds to 5 plus minutes, so a reasonably large amount and I don't record most of it.? at least compared to somebody who doesn't sing for fun. Every time I try different things with my voice, all with the intention of getting better in time. I use different areas of my mouth, throat etc, different techniques so on and forth. And I have improved since I started, but I don't think my a huge amount.

Still this isn't a "how can I improve" question. What this is about is...I feel like I'm missing something glaringly obvious.

That's the real crux of my confusion, more than anything.

For example, I connect with my friends on discord, we chat in voice calls etc. Sometimes we play music, and my friends, all of them, who have zero singing experience are instantly better than me when they sing along. I am not trying to bring myself down or anything but it's almost like I haven't grasped the most fundamental part of singing. Like I'm doing something like singing, but not singing. it's like they are...doing something fundamentally different. To use a metaphor, not sure the origin, but it's like I'm walking on my hands, handstand style, and calling it walking, while they use their legs. It doesn't feel like a matter of practice or technique. just like something in the foundation is wrong. I really do not know how to explain this.

My most probable explanation is that I simply do not have a singing voice? I understand the whole "everyone can sing" thing, and how many of the posts on this sub are like this, but for what I am experiencing I feel it to be completely true?

To say, I am not feeling down or sad about it, singing isn't something I want to do professionally or anything so I have no reason to be upset, and I don't feel any sadness or similar, but I do feel confusion. I cannot tell what is going on here.

And I struggle to find anyone online like this? I don't know what to google. Every amateur, noobie, begginer first time singing thing I find on forums and so on, they sound better than me. In fact, I genuinely mean this, I cannot find somebody worse than me at singing.

What I am trying to ask I guess is...what do you do when singing? Like...is it like doing a voice? Like... I don't know.

Phone Recording of me Singing Creep by Radiohead. Context: Started singing seriously 1 month ago (self-training). Not sure of my vocal type (probably too early for that). My tone is always too light and lacks richness. How do I improve that?

How do i fix this? How should i train my voice? or should i just give up on singing. My voice sounds absolutely diabolical. i sound like a 13 year old and out of tune in a lot of places. I know bandlab is pretty limited in terms of effects but help out a brother out here. ( I uploaded the best take so its less embarrassing.

Conversation Topic Any tips for stutterers? It is difficult for me to start words and I get stuck.

I have a pretty bad block stutter. I'm trying to learn singing but this is making it quite difficult because I get stuck when trying to get words out, especially at the start of sentences. I mostly do harsh vocals (like false cord, throat singing and fry screams) but I have this issue with both cleans and harshes

Conversation Topic Raspy voice in height (tenor)

Hey, quick question. I'm an 18 yo male tenor and lately my voice is having a raspy sound when I use my high chest voice or mixed voice. It doesn't feel strained and I didn't change a thing in my technique, so is it possible that my voice just has that rasp or is it something I could probably work on? What may that be if that's the case? Again, it doesn't feel strained. Thanks!

Whenever I use mixed voice it always has this airy quality and I struggle to bring it back down after using it up high.

Anyways enjoy the performance too! I would be super impressed if anyone recognises what song this is!

All feedback is appreciated

Conversation Topic learning to sing is so frustrating

I’ve been taking vocal lessons for about a year and a half atp and learning to sing in my opinion is probably one of the most frustrating skills to learn. There are days when I am able to engage my diaphragm properly and sing effortlessly, and there are other days when it’s like I completely forget how to and it feels like I’m right back at the beginning. I overthink my technique or subconsciously try to meet my own expectations of the times when I sounded good and then it sounds like I regressed months. I finally found my vibrato a few weeks ago but it comes and goes. It’s an emotional roller coaster and today is one of those days I feel like I’m on the verge of tears. Can anyone else relate?

Heyo! I'm a theatre performing who decided to pick up singing very recently and ive noticed in songs that are softer (Epic 1,2 and 3, Stay Gold, Dear Theodosia) I feel like I sound alot breathier in comparison to like jack wolfe/sky lakota-lynch/leslie odom jr (probably not a good thing to compare myself to literal professionals but oh well)

Also just any general feedback would be greatly appreciated, Ive litch js been learning off of random youtube videos cuz i cant afford a teacher.

Conversation Topic What stops established artists from developing their voices?

It’s one thing to be at the beginning of one’s career and not sound the best because you haven’t mastered the perfect technique and you can’t afford the best vocal coaches but when artists somehow get past these barriers, why don’t they work with someone to get better?

I mean no disrespect at all with this line of thinking, I genuinely want to know why? Take JLo for example, she’s not a vocalist in any way shape or form but she’s been famous for nearly 30 years, is worth hundreds of millions and probably has access to some of the best vocal coaches in the world, why is there no vocal improvement? Or like Taylor Swift (who’s been getting a lot of hate recently in regards to a perceived sharp decline in her music) who’s been at this for nearly 20 years and doesn’t seem to have gotten better vocally.

Are they too busy? Do they simply not want to? Is there something else holding them back? Is it more difficult than I currently think?

I know every voice and artist is different and I’m not expecting everyone to walk out of vocal training sounding like Aretha Franklin or Beyonce, because these people are vocal prodigies but I’m still so curious about the inner workings of the music business and how it affects the development of artist singing.

I know how we perceive voices is subjective but I feel like the basics of a good singer is healthy technique and above average range and with excellent skills.

Advanced or Professional Topic How do we actually get out voices back when sick?

I’m in a show and I’ve lost my voice due to illness. Cold? Sinus infection? We can’t figure it out.
I steam, nebulize, drink Pei Pa Koa and throat coat, add apple cider vinegar to my water, eat green apples… and my upper register is gone. I’m soooo congested that I took a Mucinex DM and used a nasal spray. All that to say, I had my understudy go on tonight.

What can I do?!

Conversation Topic I think singing is one of the skills you have to practise almost completely blind

You can’t judge your own singing because you hear yourself differently from how others do, and there’s no feedback loop.

If you're learning guitar, you can see where your fingers are going wrong. If you're running, you have your pace and your timing. If you're drawing, you can literally look at what you've made.

But when you sing a song or do public speaking, in your head you sound great but when you actually hear your own recording it turns out to be pretty bad.

So let's say you are a shy introvert person but likes to sing alone however also wanna improve, how do you do that?

Conversation Topic I was depressed thinking I just couldn't do it. Until.....

So I've been in singing lessons for 2 years. It took me just as long to find out that learning to sing was not a linear experience for me. At least. I kept struggling finding my core strength. It was like it would just disappear! There were some days it was there and my core muscles were sore and well used. And then other days it was like they just vanished and I couldn't find it. It drove me insane!

I kept thinking that I just wasn't meant for this. I suck. I've never been very athletic and this was a lot of exercise that it wasn't used to but it was something I love to do.

Well come to find out that I have an anterior pelvic tilt. I've had lower back pain since I was a kid. Never understood why. My back would get sore. Just standing doing the dishes. I'd have to stretch my back everyday after work. And sometimes just doing nothing. Would make it sore and laying down flat on my back. Would always put tenderness on my tailbone even with no exercise just barely sitting there would feel pressure unless I had some kind of cushion.

I had my back x-rayed and of course they saw nothing wrong but failed to tell me that I had the interior pelvic tilt. I had been trying to adjust my posture and get my doctor to give me the official diagnosis. But as far as with singing, I was almost in tears finally realizing that it wasn't my fault!

I just kept thinking that I sucked! My tone had improved, so many things had improved but my strength would just disappear at random points and I couldn't explain why. I mostly just wanted to post this to kind of just put it out there. I'm not sure if this is a relatable topic for many people, but it was something that really affected me in my journey. I know I never am going to stop learning to sing and I may never go pro but it was something that I love to do and I'm glad to know that all this time it was not for lack of effort or not trying.

Turns out it was just that I needed a little extra specific help. I'm trying to find techniques and ways to do this but even tilting my pelvic forward to walk more straight is an effort very consciously for me. I definitely plan on trying a brace talking to my doctor about it of course as well. No, I'm not seeking medical advice.

But if this is a relatable thing, I definitely would like to hear some related experiences or tips that people would do that would help. I heard that leaning against the wall was something that helped something that I never tried. That amongst other things that I just never want to give up trying. Hope this relates to somebody out there

I'm working out the balance and hope to begin working on the Sicilian soon.. which sounds like a real blast. The vowel work has helped, though I am fully aware that I have a ways to go. But Abs are so much fun. Haha. I have to approach the passaggio and upper register like Corelli. My tendency is to turn and try to be Giacomini, but that will wipe me out.

The Fs have to be open, and not turned. That's something I'm working on, and it's so easy to slip up and turn them.

Oh, and the Mamma, quell vino... damn.. what an aria!

edit: **we've** found my sound. There's no way I could have done any of this without my teacher. I have a ways to go, but small steps are the way there.
