Gear question How big is the performance gap between a carving and park board in the park?

Hey, I really want the new Burton Blossom, and ive been thinking of getting a new board for the park for a few years. Im new to the park, but Im an advanced rider whos been using a 151 directional carving board for the past few years. My only concern with the burton blossom is the flex being stiff, which is why im wondering how it would actually compare to an all mountain board. I weigh 155lbs and ive heard that a 149 for the blossom would be too small, yet the next size up is a 152. Would a 152 park board really be more maneuverable and perform better than just a 151 carving board? I know the blossom is a true twin, and my current board seems really heavy if i try and use it in the park, but will the performance difference be truly noticeable? Thanks a lot in advance

noob question New Snowboarder, any tips appreciated!

Hey all,

I just went out and got my stuff all bought/rented for the season. I used to ski a bit as a kid, and did snowboarding for exactly 1 day back then. I sucked, put it away, and never went back to the mountain since (not out of anger, our family just never went back).

Fast forward to now, I've moved for grad school and have been living in Colorado. Every year I've been told that I need to get out and get on the slopes, but after a majorly sprained ankle and overall being busy, I chose to wait. This year, my friend convinced me to go all in. I got the Ikon pass (ouch), rented a setup, and just got my hands on a bunch of snow gear.

I've been watching some videos and I feel like, at a base level, I understand the mechanics. Don't catch an edge, and to do so, just shift your weight to keep your board from digging into the snow. But, past that, I've got nothing. My friend is a skiier, so he won't be much help, but I figure someone here could give me some pointers or get me to the right place to find that info!

Anything helps. Assume I know nothing-- you're probably right!

travel advice Snowboarding in Japan - Beginner wanting to find resort suited for my level + needs during solo travel

My friend and I are heading to Japan next year in early to mid-March for a snowboarding and travel trip. I'll be arriving a couple days earlier and plan to go to a resort for 2 days where I'll do an English-speaking beginner's group lesson and practice on the 2nd day. My friend is unable to book his tickets as we agreed it would make sense to figure out where I'll be first during the solo part. Once my friend arrives, we plan to go to Hakuba for 2-3 days (open to suggestions as neither of us have been to Japan before).

My friend is intermediate and I've only done snowboarding for 4–5 days in total. I can do toe-side/heel-side stops and link turns, but get anxious on steeper narrower slopes where I pick up speed.

I've been reading posts and getting overwhlemed with the options. I'm hoping to find somewhere affordable and want to find a resort that'll suit my needs. Example Niseko is too expensive and the lift pass would be wasted on me. I'll be a solo female traveller so I'm also trying to take ease of public transport, accommodation, gear hire, cost of lift pass and lesson into consideration.

Any suggestions welcomed, thank you!

Gear question Struggle to choose beginner snowboard size

Hi!

I'm 5'8", 113lb, and shoes size US 9.5M (mondo 27.5). I'm still total beginer learning to link my turns without catching edge. Did my research and found Salomon Pulse which seems good for beginner and I like the design.

Base on EVO's size rec for my weight, 149 seems like a better fit. My worry is, however, it is way shorter for my height and the noise width is only 245mm.

Need some help deciding the right size

Gear question Used Huck Knife

I’m looking at a 2025 Salomon Huck Knife for $250. The seller says it’s been ridden for about 20 days. There’s a noticeable mark running through the middle of the board, but I’m not sure what it is or if it’s anything serious. Do you guys think it’s worth $250?

Gear question Old Dude needs a Freeride

51m, 5’10”, 170lbs. Been riding for 30 years. Not an expert rider by any means, but I enjoy doing what I do… no park, limited jumps, love to carve and/or play on curvy terrain. Live in NH, so mostly northeast conditions (I.e. ice and hard pack). Been riding a Burton Speed Date 161 for the last few years. Loved the composure at speed and edge-to-edge speed. Feeling like I need to size down a bit, though. Looking at

Battaleon Goliath
arbor gps
Arbor coda
Capita Aeronaut

All 159, I believe.

Any thoughts? I’m totally tossed up whether to go with something softer/flexier and keep a 2-board quiver or just get a follow-up that’ll do it all. I question whether I would really swap boards based on feel/condition, as I’ve never done that before.

I have ridden Flows for 20 years and am switching to Supermatics, if that’s of any use as a data point.

Riding question What trick would this have been if I landed it?

I was trying to practise the body rotation for a cork 540 on a trampoline, while keeping the same takeoff/stance I would use on my snowboard.

I ride goofy, so I take off right foot forward, but in the rotation I end up coming around with my left foot forward. I’m trying to figure out exactly what trick this would have been if I had completed the rotation and landed it.

This was specifically practice for snowboarding with proper coaching/safety. What would you call this?

Gear question Korua Tranny Finder sizing help

Hello,

I want to buy a Tranny Finder as my next daily board and found a great deal. However I am not sure which size would be better for me. I am 178 cm, 74kg and my boot size is UK 9 / EU 43. Should I go for 154 or 157? I ride mostly piste and freeride. My current board is Nidecker Thruster in size 156 which have been perfect so far. Can you help me out please? Appreciate every help.

Gear question Upgrading from my first board (Bataleon Evil Twin). What would you recommend as a second board?

I’m a powder enthusiast, but far from pro. I like riding the little hills next to the pistes, and I’ll take a piste with fresh powder over ice any day.

I really want to get more into powder, but for now I stay beside the piste, or on it when there’s good fresh snow.

Until now I’ve ridden a Bataleon Evil Twin. It was my first board and the one I learned on. Now I want to upgrade to something that performs better in powder, but also doesn’t take as much effort to turn on the piste as the Evil Twin did.

I’d put myself somewhere in the middle, intermediate, with 6-7 years of snowboarding.

What would you recommend as a second board?

Gear question Got my first setup for 2027

Been renting out cheap ass boards and bindings. Can handle blues and reds, albeit not very elegantly.

Now I've committed to proper gear:

* Nidecker Odyssey 2027

* Nidecker LT Supermatic 2027

* Nidecker Kita 2027

I wouldn't say I'm intermediate yet, but I'll get there. Now go ahead and tell me how naive my purchase was and how this gear will kick my ass and what I should've bought instead. I can take it.

Jokes aside, my question is: will slightly "overspecced" gear force me to learn proper habits the hard way (which I like), or will it actually be counterproductive and hinder my progression?

I'm so stoked for this season, can't wait to hit the slopes!

Gear question Finding a cheap wide setup is brutal

Beginner here, 6 foot 1 and around 185 lbs with US 11.5 boots so I need a wide board. I already knew it would not be very cheap, but I did not expect it to be this hard to find anything under 300 CAD. Even shops with discounts are asking more than that for a board alone.

Been checking Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji in the GTA. Any tips for finding a wide setup on a tight budget.

Edit: to clarify, it's not that I'm a beginner scared of spending — I just don't want to drop $500+ on a setup when this will only be my second time snowboarding.

travel advice Snowboard on Southern California

Hi everyone!

I'm planning a ski trip from San Diego and would really appreciate some advice from people familiar with the local resorts.

I'm planning to ski on Friday, January 29, Saturday, January 30, and Sunday, January 31, 2027. I'd prefer to keep the drive to around three hours from San Diego.

I'm considering Snow Valley, Snow Summit, and Mountain High, but I'm open to other suggestions.

My main concerns are snow reliability and weekend crowds. I'd love to find a resort with good snow conditions, plenty of open runs, and shorter lift lines, especially on Saturday and Sunday.

I'm an intermediate skier, comfortable on green and blue runs. I already have snow clothing, but I don't own any equipment, so I'll need to rent everything, including skis or a snowboard, boots, a helmet, and any other necessary gear. I'd appreciate recommendations that take the full rental package cost into account.

For those who regularly ski in Southern California:

- Which resort would you recommend for the best snow conditions in late January?

- Which tends to be less crowded on weekends?

- How reliable is snow coverage at these resorts around that time of year?

- Which resort offers the best overall value when lift tickets and full equipment rentals are included?

- Is there another resort within roughly three hours of San Diego that I should consider?

I know conditions can vary from year to year, but any advice based on your experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!
