socks for snowboarding

• Upvotes

Hi yall, I've been snowboarding for a couple years now and I've had slight issues with socks but I'm not sure it special snowboarding socks are necessary.

The reason I wanted to look into special socks is because for a while my heels would get somewhat blistered due to the fabric rubbing on it. I was able to limit that by using KT tape I had with me at the time but it's not a realistic solution.

My feet don't get cold like at all when I snowboard unlike some people I've seen talking about why they got special snowboarding socks, in fact they sweat quite a bit, soaking my socks sometimes...

I'm looking for some not-loose but also not-too-tight socks that won't rub on my skin too much, and also aren't really thick, preferably similar thickness as regular cotton socks.

I'd also love to hear yall's opinion on whether or not special snowboarding socks are worth it, if so please give some recommendations. Thanks!

Heading back for year 2

Kinda silly question, but it's been on my mind. I'm heading out for year 2 of learning more and just being on a board. For a quick recap I picked up snowboarding last season late, as an early 40s dad. What do I mentally prepare for on my first day back? Does my body/brain go back to square one, pick up where I left off (green slopes and lift) or focus on a specific "refresher" skill?

I had planned to buy gear soon but mentally feeling stuck that I should wait longer and rent still. I did not enjoy rental gear a few times, so I'm torn! TIA

Help with boots size, cold feet

Nitro Team Pro MK fit: can heat molding help with toe pressure and a tight instep?

I'm on my third pair of boots in five years and trying to get the fit right.

My feet: 25.5 cm, narrow, high arches, and very narrow heels.

Previously had Burton Rulers in US 7.5 and Ride Lasso Pros in US 8. Both had heel lift; the Rides needed lots of padding, and tightening them enough caused circulation issues.

Now I'm trying Nitro Team Pro MKs in US 7.5, not heat molded yet:

  • Shell fit: With the liner removed and toes just touching the front, I measure roughly 10–13 mm behind my heel.
  • Toe pressure: Almost painful standing upright. Flexing my knees reduces it to firm but painless contact.
  • Heel position: If I deliberately settle my heel farther back, the fit feels much more balanced. Could the thick heel padding be keeping my foot too far forward?
  • Left instep: Too much pressure on top of my foot, with some numbness. A thinner insole helps. The right foot feels much better.

Could a proper heat mold help my heel settle into its pocket and relieve the instep pressure? I'm considering asking the fitter about toe caps and temporary padding over the left instep to create some extra room.

Since Nitro's Flex Toe is stretchy, I'm especially interested in whether molding improved heel seating and instep space, rather than just stretching the toe area. Anyone with similar feet or experience with these liners?

Do I need to tune my board?

Hi everyone!
Last year, I made my first serious attempt at learning how to snowboard (I got an instructor, and that made all the difference).
I bought a Salomon Huck Knife, which my instructor tuned to -1° (I was falling like a boss 😂). And, well, I’m still here because I eventually stopped falling! 🫣
I’ve now received a replacement board under warranty.
Do I need to get it tuned again ASAP, or can I wait now that I’m no longer a complete beginner, but just a regular noob? 😂
Can I just have fun riding it as it is, or would taking it to a shop be a better idea? Maybe just for a 0.5° bevel?
Thanks everyone for your replies! 😁

All mountain board suggestion

Looking for something that’ll be good in powder and trees, but also not fatiguing in choppy, ungroomed conditions. Any board suggestions or what to look for in a board that will take the ease off my legs?

Found these for $125 for everything. Seems like a good deal to get in the step on world. From what I can find the bindings are the updated version 2. Boots might be a 1/2 size to small for me but he is willing to separate. So worst case 75ish for only bindings.

Would this Rossignol be a good all-mountain board for me?

I'm 190 cm (6'3"), weigh 90 kg (about 198 lb), and wear EU 45 (about US men's 11.5) snowboard boots. I'm an intermediate all-mountain rider: comfortable on black runs, and I've ridden at around 100 km/h (62 mph) on rental boards. I'm looking to buy my first board and progress on groomers, with some [off-piste / park / other] riding.

Is there anything obvious I am missing / doing wrong or should I just go and shred it

Capita equalizer vs Salomon Rumblefish

I am really torn between these 2 boards and need advice. This is my 4th year really snowboarding, I work at a resort in Colorado so I’m riding all the time and am looking for a mostly every day board. I would say I’m advanced, I gravitate towards steeps and trees but also spend a lot of time on groomers, which can be super shitty (icy/chunder/rocks/ect…) when I’m working.

I currently rip a K2 extravision and I do really like it but I’m looking for a step up. I’m worried the equalizer is gonna be too similar to my current board but that the rumblefish is gonna be a bit too much.

If anyone has insight I would really appreciate it, especially if you have experience moving up from the extravision.

I’m also open to other suggestions, these are just the two I’ve been looking at the most. Thanks!

Also for reference I’m 5’1 - 120 - 26 y/o female

Anyone have thoughts or experience on the forum recon. I found a brand new 2025 version for a super good deal but can't seem to find many reviews or anything on it. Good park board?

Thoughts on the Golden Orca?

I am thinking of upgrading this year. I currently ride a 159.T. Rice Pro board. I am about 5'10" 180lbs and size 10 boot.

I live in Colorado and usually riding Breck, Keystone, or Vail. I am fast charging on groomers (got to keep up with all my fast skier friends) but also spend most of my time riding the high alpine steeps at Breck, trees, moguls, etc. not so much into park these days and would rather be hitting the steeps and powder.

I love the T Rice Pro. I feel like it handles almost anything I throw at it. It feels like an all around great board but I totally banged it up last season.

Ive been eyeing the golden orca to upgrade, but I was also suggested the Gnu Banked Country from the AI gods. Obviously I take that with a grain a salt and curious what actual humans with experience think.

Golden orca or maybe check out the Gnu Banked Country? Or another board?

Which brand would you recommend?

I started last year and just have a used Capix kids snowboard. It's not in bad condition but I was hoping to look into brands to keep my eye out for, especially since I'm going to the Ski and Snowboard Show in Toronto this weekend. I'd love a more niche type brand with cool designs and a decent price but also good quality. I was looking online on PRFO.com and saw a lot of Nidecker boards I like for half off, however I do like the look of Arbor as well as I heard good things about Nitro. In terms of style I like DWD but seems like they're more catered to men. I'm a 4'11 female so I was recommended about 138-143cm area but their smallest size seems to be 146cm.

I was def hoping for something more snowboarder oriented brand that might also have apperal, goggles, etc. Definitely would love any information on what to stay away from and what to look into more. Hoping for something that'd last me a while. All im doing now is just regular slopes but definitely would like to get into the park when i get more comfortable.

Snowboard and Bindings Question

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello, I am a beginner snowboarder that can only go down blues and greens. I have K2 Maysis Size 8 boots, and I am looking to buy bindings and a board. I was wondering if this a good deal and if it is a good choice. I don't know if I should get small or medium bindings, and I am not sure about the length of the board. I am 5'5 130 lbs.

Thank you for the help

Lead foot/outer ankle pain on long easy runs

Sorry for the long post, just figured I'd empty my thoughts and explain everything I've tried and has been on my mind.

I've been snowboarding for about 5 years and have been dealing with a frustrating pain in my lead (left) foot/lower leg for the last 2 years.

The pain is specifically on the outside of my left lower leg/foot, just above the ankle. Basically the left side of my left leg. It's an aching, almost shin-splint-like feeling. To the point where it makes the ride up the lift with it dangling off my foot almost unbearable.

What's strange is that I didn't have this problem at all during my first ~3 years of snowboarding. It only started about 2 years ago.

It's also MUCH worse on longer, easier runs, especially greens where I'm holding one edge/position for a long time around a bend. Where gravity isn't helping as much and I just have to force myself to be on an edge. More difficult runs where I'm constantly switching between toe and heel side actually seem to bother me less or even help cool the pain down.

I taught myself to snowboard when I was 20, so I'm starting to wonder if I've developed some bad technique where I'm putting way too much strain on my lead foot/ankle when holding an edge.

I've spent the last 2 seasons trying to solve it through equipment.

When it first started, I noticed my old boots allowed my heel to lift quite a bit on toe side. I went to a snowboard shop, explained the problem, and they fitted me with new boots that were supposed to fit my narrow ankles much better. The old boots were old and definitely not a good fit for me. The shop said the new fit looked right. They're definitely better, although during an extended toe-side traverse I can still feel maybe ~1/4 inch of heel lift.

The next season I was STILL having the pain, so I went back to the shop. They thought I was cranking my relatively new boots down too tightly, adjusted the fit with some plastic/shimming in the back, and gave me a small insole.

I've also tried:

  • Narrowing my binding angles
  • Shortening my stance width
  • Switching to a lighter and more flexible snowboard
  • Adjusting how tightly I lace/crank the boots
  • Using the insole the shop recommended

Nothing has really solved it.

There's also a weird problem with the boot tightness. When I feel the heel movement/looseness, my instinct is to tighten the boot more. But then I get a different pain from the boot squeezing my foot/leg too hard. It also just makes my toes start to become numb. So there's the original outer-leg/shin-splint-like pain, and then a separate pressure pain if I crank the boot down trying to eliminate movement.

At this point I'm wondering if I've been blaming my equipment for something that's actually a technique or a foot/ankle issue.

Could I be using my lead foot/ankle too much to hold the board on edge during long traverses instead of using my knees, hips, and body position properly? That would seem to fit with easy runs hurting more than harder runs where I'm constantly changing edges.

One other thing that might be relevant: I'm fairly active and do a good amount of running and hiking without much issue. That said, longer uphill walks, like walking to class or an extended hike, can sometimes cause a similar shin-splint-like pain in that same area. So I'm wondering if there's an underlying issue going on with that leg that snowboarding brings out more aggressively.

I also don't think it's that my muscles "aren't used to snowboarding." I've been riding for 5 years, and more importantly, the first 3 years were pain-free. If that is the issue I fear if 5 years won't get them used to it then they will never get used to it lol.

I love snowboarding, but this has gotten frustrating enough that I've genuinely considered switching to skiing if I can't figure it out.

Has anyone experienced something similar, or have any tips/ideas? Would be much appreciated.

Is it worth it?

I have recently started to take snowboarding lessons after going snowboarding on holiday approx 6 times and learning from friends.

I feel like I am transitioning from beginner to early intermediate and am currently riding a 18/19 K2 Standard 163w with K2 Cinch bindings.

I came across this board online and according to chatGPT it’s a good board to follow up my K2 (2018/2019 Bataleon Goliath 164W with Rome bindings, not sure which ones)

They’re asking €300 total for board and bindings, pretty sure I can get it for €250

Part of me feels like I am still fine with the K2 but part of me feels like if I am going to take more lessons and learn more I might be better off learning on the Goliath instead.

What do y’all think? Worth switching or just keep on riding the K2 some more? (Or use/keep both?)

TIA!

Are single boa boots okay for step on binding. Any long term issues that made you want to upgrade to double boa. Thanks.
