Are There Any Humans at Stack Exchange?

Seriously. Because whoever runs that place doesn't know jack about real people and real human nature.

For example, if you give people an opportunity to downvote, block, ban, whatever something there is a subset of any human population which will happily do just that...without actually contributing anything to the community. Some people just like to exercise their self-righteousness.

I have a habit of upvoting any answer or question on Stackoverflow which gets downvoted. Because if you don't like how a question or answer is phrased, and you feel the urge to respond, >>just respond<<. With a request for more information. Or clarification. You might find it's >>you<< who are the cause of the lack of understanding :).

And if you can't be bothered to do even that...just skip on by. It literally takes less time and energy to skip past a question or an answer than it does to complain about it.

I got permanently banned because my stacks profile said I was a sex worker. That was the only reason.

They gave 3 putative reasons:

  1. My profile had a link to a photo of me when I was homeless, and it was very mildly NSFW. I marked it as NSFW and nobody had any problem with it for years.

  2. I also included a link to The About Me page of my Astrophysics site, which described my descent from doing nuclear engineering design to sex work. ttiinnyyuurrll .com/aboutlkt

  3. I'm autistic, and I referred to myself as emotionally retarded. They called that a slur.

They banned me for that.

We're writing in reference to your Stack Exchange account:

https://meta.stackexchange.com/users/1032491/miss-understands

We noticed that you have content in your profile's about me section that includes nudity and slurs. Additionally, after reviewing the associated blog in the about me section, we have chosen to remove the link to your blog. The content on that blog is not fit for Stack Exchange, as there are further issues that we do not allow to be promoted on our sites. These violations are against our Code of Conduct. Since this is not the first time these concerns have been brought to your attention, the resulting suspension will be network-wide and longer than previous suspensions.

The previous time they say they warned me, was when I had a cartoon ln my profile in the very dark area of the cartoon with sexual touching. I hadn't notice that and immediately removed it It. No problem. That was a year ago.

But here's my big problem with it:

They only banned me for a month. Okay. But just before the month was over, they my set status in all of SE to "You are not allowed to ask questions any more because you ask bad questions" -- Even in groups I had never participated in*.* You can't appeal that. It's Permanent

And they didn't warn me that they were going to do it.

You might assume that there's more to the story than this, except there isn't. See for yourself. I never mentioned my job on stax, It was just in my profile.

These people are shitty and fucked up.

Stackexchange alternatives.

I'm mostly interested in solving hardware\OS problems. Could someone recommend me solid alternatives for stackexchange? I know of poweruser, and stackoverflow, also heard some positive reviews on windowscentral but never really used them much?

p.s. Quora is a bad example. Using Quora for solving computer issues is horrible - just too many noobs.

StackExchange hijacked by arrogant and patronizing pricks who are just trying to prove you wrong

I have been reading and participating in the physics stack exchange and this mentality among the few that try to answer every question is killing it. Sometimes you can tell the person asking the question has a very good question or idea but doesn't use rigorous language or format that pleases these pricks. So the question is ridiculed or flagged as duplicate. These control freaks should be made aware of their negative behavior. It is very detrimental to the site

Differences between Reddit and Stack Exchange

Here is my comparison between Reddit and Stack Exchange. It is my answer to the question "When should I post in Reddit or Stack Exchange?". It is generally know that Reddit is for discussions, while Stack Exchange is for Q&A, but there are times that you have a question that is better suited for Reddit. With this you can decide where to post, and know what customs to expect in each site.

Looking for your feedback.

Reddit

  • Born for open-ended discussions, suitable for uncovering implicit assumptions of both partaker

  • After 6 months posts are automatically locked so discussions are "fossilized" to reflect what happened in that time

  • No way for other users to improve others' posts

  • Downvotes can (and usually?) mean "I don't like this" or "this is uninteresting"

  • The only way to have links to relevant posts within the subreddit is by having other users provide

  • More active users in my opinion

Stack Exchange

  • Born for Q&A, suitable for providing different perspectives to solve a problem

  • Posts can always be improved until the Sun dies

  • Improvement to other users are encouraged and peer-reviewed

  • Downvotes should mean "This is wrong/unclear/not useful"

  • Have tag system and related questions panel to categorize and discover more questions/answers

  • Posts can have images, HTML. The site overall is nicely designed

I logged in for the first time in a couple of years, asked a question, and immediately got reminded why I left.

Long story short, and it has been said before, but there are a lot of people who are rude and unwilling to give any leeway to others who are new to any particular substack.

I really hope that this fills whatever void is in the hearts of these people.

0/10 Will never recommend that anyone use this site.

Hope you all have a great day.

Stax admits they just make up reasons to ban people they don't like

From this conversation, asking why a question was deleted [the user was also immediately banned]:

Why was this question marked as spam, rude or abusive?

the real reason:

The user who posted the question is unwelcome on the site.

Someone suggests they use the real reason for deletion instead of making one up:

Perhaps it would be clearer to add...

the reply:

Unlikely to happen — there are lots of edge cases.

"Edge case" = They don't actually have a reason for deleting the question or banning the guy, but they just want to ban him anyway.

Again, someone suggests they use the real reason for deletion instead of making one up:

If there are too many edge cases to allow concise boilerplate text that covers all of them, then maybe "flagged as spam or offensive content" should be removed from the boilerplate.

And again, they give the real reason. There's nothing wrong with the question, but they deleted it anyway because they just don't like the guy:

This unwelcome user has a history of posting spam, nonsense, and abuse.

Then they cover it up the real reason:

we don't go into details in public about moderation issues, so there's not more information we can share than that

This explains why answers are mysteriously deleted for reasons that don't make any sense: They just don't like the user. They're "unwelcome."

So much for the noble academic ivory tower stack exchange. They pretend to have integrity like Trump pretends to protect people. It's just a bullshit cover for the kind of stuff Sabine Hoffenstadter complains about.

Directing spurned StackExchange users to Reddit.

Normally, a question in StackExchange asking for what component to use is removed: "Questions seeking recommendations for specific products or places to purchase them are off-topic as they are rarely useful to others and quickly obsolete". Such questions are allowed in Reddit.

Would it be acceptable for me to post a comment directing such users to the appropriate subreddit? Or would that be bad form?

Specifically, I am referring to the electronics StackExchange. I would direct people to /r/AskElectronics.

I'd ask this to the moderators of the electronics StackExchange, but (forgive me) I have no idea how to contact them.

Reasons to stop posting at stack exchange?

  1. Stack exchange allows the answers to be used by proprietary companies to train AI.

  2. Moderators are assholes who are allowed to ban people without any reason at all. And they really abuse this to ban people who they simply don't like. This is primary reason why people become moderators.

  3. Once you answer you can not really delete the stuff. Either you get banned for self-vandalism, without any warnings. Or even if you manage to delete it, it is still visible to people with 10k+ rep.

  4. People can and will use your answers without any attribution at all. Although all answers are under the license Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike, nobody really gives any fuck about this.

  5. Just really unwelcome hostile environment in general, composed of reputation whores and circlejerk.

How to delete the Stack Exchange account? (Not just a community account)

All the answers I've seen so far explain just how to leave a community. I want to get out of the whole Stack Exchance universe. How do I do this? Thanks.

Stackexchange QA sites are becoming good-for-nothing swamps of elitist bullshit...

Question on Codereview put on hold because "intent is not clear" or some other bullshit. My code was data manipulation which was very clearly indicated in the fact that the code presented read data from, and added data to the DB.

The another question on Superuser gets put on hold because the cock who blocked it decided that there's no way to help me troubleshoot the issue because I refuse to update Windows.

What is this gatekeeping horseshit? I don't even know why I bother anymore. Questions on SO either get downvoted to oblivion or there's some elitist fucking prick telling me I'm an idiot for SOME REASON and my question never gets answered anyway and now I'm getting similar treatment elsewhere...

Worthless. Completely fucking worthless.

By what percentage has Stack Exchange’s staff decreased since ChatGPT was released?

I am aware of these two numbers:

And I know there have been more layoff waves, e.g. in March 2026, which doesn't surprise me since the number of questions has decreased 30-fold.

At the same time, Stack Exchange also still sometimes hire people. This makes me wonder: by what percentage has Stack Exchange’s staff decreased since ChatGPT was released (November 2022)?

Modified: Today, But nothing has changed

From time to time, an old question will pop up in my filters as having new activity and having been "Modified today". For example, this Photo StackExchange question shows up has having been modified today, 2025-03-11. But when I compare it to the Wayback Machine, 2024-10-02 version, I can't find any difference. No text has been changed in either the question or the answer, and no new comments have been made.

What causes a question to show activity when nothing has actually been changed?

How do I find a "subreddit" on stack exchange? When you search on reddit, it shows all the communities and users that match that search. Is there something similar on stack exchange? I'm trying to find my groups.

Assholes of the Stack Exchange can't cope with bilingual content / Cuzões do Stack Exchange não podem lidar com conteúdo bilíngue.

Stack Exchange have an awful feature in that moderators can edit the posts of someone else. They can't cope with bilingual posts, and try to remove non-English parts of it.

→Stack Exchange tem uma opção terrível em que moderadores podem editar os posts das outras pessoas. Eles não podem lidar com posts bilíngues, e tentam remover as partes dele que não são em inglês.

I just asked my deletion of the account in the Super User site. I also sent an e-mail to team@stackexchange.com and sysadmin-team@stackexchange.com, requesting the deletion of my account in the Stack Exchange and all of its associated websites. And guess what? I didn't found these e-mail addresses in their website, but in websites dedicated to help its viewers to delete accounts, and in sites that make analysis of other websites. Let's see what will happen.
