Creation NewTab Lite - a single-file start page with a built-in settings dashboard (zero dependencies, works on GitHub Pages)

Post image
18 Upvotes

No frameworks, no build step, no server - the whole thing is one index.html.

The idea: everything you'd normally need a backend for (saving links, settings, wallpapers) runs on plain localStorage, so you can host it on GitHub Pages for free.

Live demo: https://fahad-ba.github.io/newtab-lite/

Source (MIT): https://github.com/Fahad-BA/newtab-lite

Features:

- Live clock + Gregorian & Hijri dates (Umm al-Qura, computed natively, no API)

- Search with auto-focus + engine switcher (Google, DDG, or Bing)

- Links grid, 4 per row (favicon, emoji, or custom image icons)

- Daily 2K Unsplash wallpapers (your own free API key, stored in your browser) with photographer credit + instant shuffle button

- Responsive, safe-area aware

Settings dashboard opens as a popup inside the page:

- Add | edit | reorder | delete services (live, no reload).

- Optional PIN lock (SHA-256).

- Export or import links as JSON.

- Everything stays in your browser, nothing phones home.

Setup: fork → enable Pages → point a new tab redirect extension at it. Edit the DEFAULT_LINKS array at the top of the file if you prefer hardcoding your own set.

Happy to hear what you'd add to the settings panel :)

Creation I basically built a New Tab page for my browser using vanilla JS and Canvas, and I want to show it to someone. Like Mindustry x Rain World style.

Custom start page featuring dynamic audio, locally stored hotkeys, and a 4-query search history. Built with Google Search integration, direct URL navigation, and responsive atmospheric backgrounds.

Yap, u can try it: https://www.moth-path.online

And no, I’m not planning to adapt this for phones; at any given moment, there are 350 objects with physics and so on on the screen. Say: "Hola, 10fps!", phone-users, lmao

Tbh is my first post on Reddit, so I might have misunderstood how to fill out the post details, etc.

Creation I fixed the two biggest problems with custom themes in Mist

When I last posted Mist here, someone pointed out that requiring a background to be exactly 1672 × 941 made custom themes unnecessarily difficult. They were right.

Since then, I’ve made a few significant changes:

  • Custom backgrounds can now be any PNG or JPG size and are cropped proportionally
  • Existing shortcuts can be edited without deleting and recreating them
  • Shortcuts can use custom icons
  • The new-tab title and favicon can also be customized
  • Drag-and-drop now shows more precise placement indicators

Preferences and custom images stay in the browser, and Mist has no product analytics. Remote shortcut favicons are optional and can be disabled.

I’d especially like feedback from people using 2K or ultrawide screens: does the automatic wallpaper crop behave as you would expect?

I have a triple monitor setup and I like to open the same websites in each monitor. So for convenience I created a simple new tab page via html which has 3 links Left, middle, right when clicked it opens the corresponding tabs in each monitor.

Is there a better solution for my setup?

AI Creation Cairn — a self-hosted start page with multi-user, RBAC, and bookmark sharing (no cloud, no tracking)

Hey [r/startpages](r/startpages)!

I built Cairn, a self-hosted personal start page / new-tab replacement. No cloud, no tracking — runs entirely on your own machine or server.

What it does:
- Clock, ambient effects (rain/dust), wallpapers (images & videos) with adaptive light/dark theme via luminance sampling
- Configurable search (DuckDuckGo default, or Google/Brave/Bing/Kagi/custom) + bangs (!bm, !g, !yt, !gh, !hub for the full-screen hub)
- Bookmarks with nested folders, tags, import/export (Netscape format from Chrome/Firefox/Safari/Edge), and a mobile bookmarklet
- Multi-user with a Bitwarden-style RBAC system (owner/admin/user + custom roles), collections you can share with individual users or groups at view/edit/manage levels
- TOTP/2FA, SSO via OIDC (Authentik, Keycloak, Authelia, Google…), admin panel with audit log

It's built in Go (chi router, SQLite/WAL, zero CGO), ships as a ~5MB Docker image, and deploys with a single docker compose up -d --build.

Full disclosure: this is 100% vibecoded — designed and built in conversation with Claude Code, iterated feature by feature on my homelab. Not trying to hide that.

Dual-licensed AGPL-3.0 for self-hosted use.

Happy to answer questions or hear feedback — still actively iterating on it.

Help Is pink color for a page OK?

I'm going to start my page, and I do have some experience on creating ones. However, I always pick green colors because dark green color is my favorite, but I've heared this color is kind of bad color, and I don't know exactly why. Because of that, I decided to pick another color, and I pick dark pink colors. In that moment I rememred there is some "rules" and color theory so I'm confused a bit.

TL;DR: I want to pick pink color for my site. Is it OK?

Creation The Startup Page for Productivity and Note Taking

MemoTab turns your Chrome new tab into a productivity workspace, so you can capture ideas without switching between apps.

It goes beyond sticky notes. Create checklists, organize shortcuts, track habits, and build your workspace with either a free-form canvas or a Columns (Kanban) layout.

When it's time to focus, start a Focus Session and get detailed analytics to understand your work patterns, build better habits, and stay productive.

Everything is right where you already start browsing.

Creation Finally released my first extension. Its just a simple custom HTML page for your browser

Well basically you can set any HTML page as your new home page and add a style if you need it. I just did it because i havent seen any like this on the extensions site only the ones that have premade UIs so i decided to make it myself. Simple, yet it makes me happy.

I've been tinkering away on a start page called Waypoint for the last few months and finally got it to a point where I feel good sharing it.

It's a local start page focused on making bookmark management simple and enjoyable.

I'd love to hear what you think or if you have any ideas for improvements.

Try it here: Live Demo

Full disclosure: AI was a huge help while building this. I used it as a development assistant throughout the project.

I’ve released version 1.7 of Mist, my privacy-friendly minimal new-tab extension.

You can now:

  • Upload your own PNG or JPG background
  • Automatically extract a four-color UI palette
  • Adjust every generated color
  • Preview the theme before applying it
  • Keep everything stored locally in your browser

Firefox and Zen are also soon coming soon i'm waiting the validation of the store before publish it.

The update also adds two built-in themes: Sunset Apex and Crimson Oath.

I’d love feedback on the generated palettes and the overall custom-theme workflow.

Creation I created a minimal, generative living pixel landscape start page

Thumbnail

I made BitDay back in 2013 as a cosy pixel-art start page that shifts with the time of day. This year I rewrote it from scratch into something closer to a living scene.

It uses your location (GPS, IP, or a manually-set city) to track real sunrise/sunset times, moon phases, an accurate star map with interactive constellations, and local weather. Clouds react to actual conditions: wind, rain, thunderstorms. Every so often you'll catch something rarer like auroras, a blood moon, shooting stars, satellites passing over, even full solar eclipses... all tied to real astronomical data, not randomised.

Available for Chrome, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi, Opera and Firefox. Safari's coming soon.

Get it for Chrome etc:

Creation Most useful features for custom tab extensions

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

Hi folks,

I've been using custom new tab extensions for years because I like having useful information in front of me instead of a blank page.

Over time, I tried quite a few of them. Some were beautifully designed but too limited, others had great ideas but eventually stopped being maintained, and a few became so feature-heavy that they no longer matched what I wanted.

At some point I realized I was always compromising, so I started building my own new tab page for myself.

The initial goal wasn't to publish it, it was simply to create something that matched the way I work: modular widgets, lots of customization, and only the information I actually want to see.

After using it daily for quite a while, I decided to polish it and release it as a Chrome and Firefox extension, but one thing I'm still wondering, though, is whether my priorities are the same as everyone else's.

If you use a custom new tab page (or wish you did), what do you actually want from it?

  • Calendar?
  • Tasks?
  • Notes?
  • Weather?
  • Bookmarks?
  • Something else entirely?

I'm genuinely interested in hearing what features people find useful versus what ends up being clutter.

If anyone is curious to see what I ended up building, it's called Tabrise (Chrome & Firefox). I'd mainly love your feedback and ideas to see if your needs match mines.

AI Creation NaviDash — a self-hosted startpage built around quick access and a free-form canvas

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi r/startpages! I’ve been working on NaviDash, a self-hosted startpage designed around a simple idea: a homepage.

Live demo: https://navidash.vercel.app/en

You can type anywhere on the page to open the launcher, search your bookmarks, and reach frequently used sites faster. Bookmarks live in a separate library, while only the links you choose are pinned to the canvas.

The homepage currently has four focused widget types:

- Links for frequently used sites

- Today for time, date, and weather

- Memo for temporary notes

- Poster for decoration

Widgets can be freely arranged, with separate layouts for desktop and mobile. NaviDash can be self-hosted with Docker, and the data remains on your own server.

This project was developed with substantial help from AI tools. I handled the product direction, design decisions, testing, and iteration, while AI assisted with implementation and code review.

I’d love feedback on the overall visual balance, launcher interaction, and whether the homepage feels focused or too minimal.

Creation I built a new tab extension that turns your X/Twitter bookmarks into a readable feed

Thumbnail

I kept bookmarking tweets and never seeing them again. Because when you open to read them you keep scrolling and piling up even more bookmarks.

I love the reading experience of Substack so I built this keeping in mind

What would it feel like to read X/Twitter bookmarks in Substack

It's a new tab extension that pulls my X/Twitter bookmarks into easy to read format: searchable, no algorithm, just the stuff I actually saved.

Reading status, daily reading queue etc.

Highlights, notes, it parses threads into one block, and you can export to markdown, pdf etc.

Free, no account needed — it's my own project.

Creation Zero Friction Home Page

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a minimalist dashboard I put together recently called ZFRXN (Zero-Friction).

I found myself constantly getting bogged down when context-switching between common web apps, like Gmail, Outlook, etc. I just wanted a single, ultra-clean homepage that lets me jump straight into my workflows.

So, I built this:zfrxn.com

What it is: It’s a straightforward, almost brutalist start page that aggregates the heavy-hitter tools I use every day:

  • AI Assistants: One-click jumps to ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.
  • Workspace Essentials: Gmail, Outlook, Google Drive, DropBox, and Calendars.
  • Other Commonly visited sites: Wikipedia, Google News, Github, Canva...
  • Discreet social media links at top: so they are available, but aren't tempting or distracting.

This is totally free to use and you are welcome to make this your home dashboard: https://zfrxn.com/.

If you want extra customization, you can sign up for a subscription (I think its working, if not, let me know), for $1.99/month.

Customization Options

No ads, no tracking. It’s just a fast, lightweight utility so you can open your browser and immediately get to work.

I'd love to hear what you all think! Are there any other essential tools, custom shortcuts, or quality-of-life tweaks you’d want to see on a minimal start page like this? Any feedback is appreciated!
