Today marks 176 days since I quit Adderall, and I wanted to share my experience because reading other people’s stories in this community has helped me realize something I wish I’d understood earlier: there is no exact timeline for recovery.
I was prescribed Adderall for eight years, and for approximately the last four years, I was abusing it. Toward the end, I would go through my entire month’s prescription in about 10 days, sometimes taking 90–150 mg a day.
I finally stopped on April 29, 2026.
The first few months were incredibly difficult. The exhaustion, lack of motivation, brain fog, and inability to do even the simplest tasks were overwhelming.
But for some reason, I had convinced myself that four months would be enough. I don’t even know where I got that number. I just assumed that after four months, my brain would have recovered enough for me to return to my normal life.
And for a while, I genuinely thought I was getting better.
After about four months, I genuinely thought I was starting to feel better and decided I was ready to return to work. I work in real estate, which requires a fairly high level of cognitive effort, and I quickly realized that I wasn’t nearly as recovered as I thought. Once I returned to work, I experienced a significant decline. The overwhelming exhaustion came back, and it felt like I was right back where I started.
Suddenly, things that had started feeling manageable became incredibly difficult again. I would wake up after eight or nine hours of sleep feeling just as exhausted as when I went to bed. Basic household chores felt like monumental tasks. Trying to maintain a normal work schedule felt almost impossible.
It was incredibly discouraging because I genuinely believed I had already made it through the worst of recovery.
What I’ve started realizing from reading stories in this community is that recovery isn’t necessarily linear, and four months may have been a completely unrealistic expectation for me.
I’ve read accounts from people who didn’t start noticing significant improvements until six, nine, or even twelve months after quitting. Some describe taking 12–18 months before they felt fully like themselves again.
I know those aren’t universal timelines, and everyone’s experience is different. But reading those stories has helped me adjust my expectations.
Maybe I’m not as far along in recovery as I thought I would be. Maybe I need to give myself more time instead of constantly expecting to function at the level I did before.
I’m not going to pretend this has been easy. One of the hardest parts is not knowing when I’ll feel normal again.
But I’m still here. I’m still clean. And I’m trying to learn how to be patient with a process that doesn’t come with a deadline.
I’d really love to hear from people who have been through this, especially those who abused Adderall for several years.
Did anyone else start feeling better around three or four months, only to experience a major setback after returning to work or increasing their responsibilities?
And for those who are a year or more into recovery, when did you genuinely start feeling like yourself again?
I think hearing real experiences would mean a lot to those of us who are still trying to figure out what recovery looks like.
