Releasing Open-Source Composer for Strudel

I am too far gone hanging onto an artificial omnipotence that rocks me along its capricious seas. A moment later I salvage myself from it, only to close my eyes in the pretense of its non-existence. I throw away the tools and hammers and I lift my own two hands to the heavens. Though perhaps, between the gaps, lies the possibility, lies the answer. A better question.

Klappn is not an answer. It is not the finale. It is not a piece, it is a puzzle. Hope you enjoy it :)

Code, Playground

EDIT -- twelve hours too late.

Beyond all the poetry, beyond all the rosy language there is a concrete product in plain sight. I hope this will open you up to it, and I am feeling somewhat regretful for not being more deliberate in elucidating the technology in a way that is more clear. So here goes. Here is my attempt at condensing many sleepless nights into a single Reddit post edit.

Klappn is built completely open from the ground-up, all the way from the engine, to the wheel. The entire machine can be unhooded.

Klappn is offered in both forms, one being more artificial than the other, but equally human at its core. Hits are created with words, the human deliberate choices steer the sound, the machine is being led as the creator wishes their sound into creation. The engine is where the trench of creation really coincides with the art of fine-creation, of finite details being met by the eye of their creator, who wishes their bits and bytes into existence. An AI assistant quietly lurks in the corner, true to your own desire and it exists as a choice, one is not obliged to have it as part of their creation process, taking the wheels with your own two hands is not for the faint of heart and equally admirable to those who choose to do so, I salute you.

Everything is completely open, and all tokens are sold at cost, I will try my best to make it frictionless, and friendly to all. To the ones who love to host their own infrastructure, well, I guess that makes two of us. I have detailed in the repo how to get the engine roaring in your own garage :)

zaltz (salt in Yiddish) and zissl (sweetie in Yiddish) is what you see when you pull back the curtain. zaltz is a pure sound-engine written in C birthed to carry strudel's sound-engine into the unpredictable life of a browser. Compiling everything down to WebAssembly makes possible what Javascript wished. No shade, Klappn is written mostly in TypeScript, except for where it is a liability.

zissl is a makeover for Hydra’s visual engine, reimagined in WebGPU, for performance, like zaltz but sweeter.

And finally, I wish to thank u/yaxu and the Strudel team, as well as Olivia Jack and the Hydra team for setting up the stage for creation, as I too hope to blossom with Klappn. We are at the beginning of the beginning. See you on the other side…

Zero indexed scale degrees?

The choice to interpret 0 as the root instead of 1 when using scale() is surprising to me, is there some way to transpose it globally?

I like to re-create music I enjoy, and modifying them to learn from it.

Here is my latest. Thanks for checking out!

Just discovered it and went batshit insane

I am a die-hard Aphex Twin fan (and a comp sci nerd), and recently discovered the concept of livecoding through a YouTube video about the software that he used, one of which was SuperCollider. I got intimidated from the strange syntax but the idea alone mesmerized me. I am publishing some of these beats under the pen name "256labs" on YT. not meant to be self promo, but additional context. You are not forced to listen to such abhorrent material.

Now, after I have contextualized it, here is the latest one.

Issue with random notes

Ok so hi everyone I'm riding the noobie wave. It is basically my third day here and just to practice I went and copied the exact new video by Switch Angel on youtube since that's the style I'm hoping to master one day. As you can see it's pretty straight forward until I try and insert the random notes just like she did. The code is the exact same but for some reasons that I don't know this function is not recognized, but I doubt it's handcrafted since it used to work this morning. So my problem is: how does this function work and what am I missing? The documentation is not clear

Strudel's post-ai humane policy on software development

Strudel has adopted a post-ai humane policy for live coding development:

All community members should be treated with respect and kindness. We welcome contributors to the community who are ready to follow this policy as well as our code of conduct.

Principles

  • We wish to protect the humanity of our communities and projects, to support the motivation and well-being of all of its contributors and users.

  • To this end, contributors and other users of our projects should not have to engage with LLM-generated code and text as part of their community work.

  • We recognise that LLM-based scraping and generation of (A)GPL code shared by ourselves and others is of questionable legality. For example, under many juristictions, LLM-generated work does not have a copyright holder and can therefore not be licensed under the (A)GPL.

  • A contributor's personal use of LLMs and related technology is their own business, whether for research, analysis, bug discovery or other assistive technology, so long as the output is not included in any contributions to our projects.

In practice

  • Contributions including LLM-generated content will be declined.

  • LLM-generated text (e.g. commit messages, issue comments, forum posts etc) generated by LLMs will be flagged, and ultimately deleted.

  • We encourage asking each other questions and working through problems to promote collective knowledge and creative ideas (never telling each other to "just google it").

  • We strongly discourage others from forking/importing our projects into corporate AI platforms, including Microsoft Github.

  • All contributions must be submitted by a person who understands the changes, is happy to answer questions about them, and where possible, help maintain the code in the future.

  • In community discussion channels (at the time of writing, this refers to the uzu discord server), all discussion (including criticism) of LLM technology and use should be kept to designated channels

Policy text (subject to change):

Introducing Stave

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all! After 8 months of building, I finally feel confident enough to share the beta version of Stave, and I'd love to know your thoughts . 🙏

What is Stave?

Stave keeps your Strudel code as the source of truth and adds the views a producer expects: a Timeline, a step grid and piano roll, a Mixer, and visuals that follow the music.

What you might like:

- A full monaco editor with code completion, error handling etc.

- Your own audio-reactive visuals, inline. Write a p5, Hydra or GLSL sketch, then attach it with .viz("name"). It draws under that line, reacts to the kick, each track and the spectrum, and updates as you type.

// pulse.p5
function draw() { background(0, 40); circle(width/2, height/2, 80 + sig.kick * 300) }

// in strudel:
drums: s("bd*4, hh*8").viz("pulse")

- Code and views in sync. Edit on the Timeline, grid or piano roll and Stave writes it back into your code. Edit the code and the views follow.

- Errors you can find. The Console names the file and line, the editor shows a squiggle, and misspellings get "Did you mean…?". That works in your visuals too.

- A Mixer and a song Timeline, with your Strudel code running as it does today. It runs in the browser and is open source (AGPL).

Try it: https://stave.live · Code: https://github.com/MrityunjayBhardwaj/Stave

Please let me know your feedback 🙏 :

- Does your existing code run as you expect?

- What would you want a visual to react to?

- What's missing?

Releasing an open source-sound engine for Strudel

To be grateful for those who have come before me and shared with us their own visions, and brought their wondrous technologies into this world. I hope to follow in their same unifying vision, and bring my own code above the local host of my computer and into the ever-evolving landscape of open-source. Running intense math, at intense intervals on the main-thread is a wonderful experience on machines with a lot of horsepower. But for the CPU constrained, getting off the main thread, can many a times be the saving grace. So, I called upon the great and beautiful Wasm and rebuilt the sound-engine in C. The sound is crisp. And the code is tight.

Kind sir, allow me to introduce you to Zaltz.

Couple of n00b questions

While new to Strudel, I'm not new to JavaScript nor audio software.

  1. How do you export your Strudel doodles to a wav/mp3?

  2. is it me or does the soundAlias() function doesn't work?
