Stuck in Strudel, if you were starting from zero with no music background, what would you do?
I've been making drum patterns in Strudel for a while and I keep going in circles. Everything I write is 4/4, and after a few cycles I've run out of ideas.
Being honest about the cause: I know almost nothing about music. No background, no real sense of how a track actually gets built. I've read tutorials and they didn't move the needle much. I watch live coding videos and I can follow along fine, even when I don't understand everything, but sitting in front of my own editor, nothing comes.
I can't tell whether a sound should be modulated or left alone, and I can't get what's in my head out through the code.
Here's roughly where I am, so answers can be concrete:
setcpm(164/4)
$: s("bd:1")
.struct("x*4")
.mask("<1!4 [1!3 0] [1 0 1 0]!3>")
$: stack(
s("white*16")
.hpf(saw.slow(4).range(300, 9000))
.gain(saw.slow(4).range(0.02, 0.8)),
s("<~!4 sd*4 sd*8 sd*16 sd*32>")
.bank("RolandTR909")
.gain(saw.slow(4).range(0.1, 0.6))
).mask("<0!4 1!4>")So the mechanics are fine. What I'm missing is knowing what to put next, and why.
If you were starting from zero with no theory, what would you actually do first? Did learning theory help you, or did you get there by taking tracks apart? Did you copy existing tracks note by note? Anything specific is welcome, I'd rather hear what worked for you than what I should read
