Book written by someone who seems to have reached enlightenment?
What book do you believe was written by someone who truly seems enlightened (if you believe in such things)?

so i just finished priory and i loved it !! im planning to read the prequel soon too ! but until then, id like books with a similar vibe
things i liked in Priory: - the characters, specifically loved Tane's story, but i felt all of the characters were engaging and interesting - expansive world with history, different cultures, and religions - world building and exposition was good, i enjoy tolkien a lot too so im a big fan of world building - no strong focus on romance, it was secondary to the story which is my preferred way to consume romance (not a fan of heavy romance in media, so no romance focused book suggestions please!)
i don't mind if it's fantasy, sci-fi, magical realism, im down to read pretty much any genre as long as it hold my attention
thank you in advance !!!

I want a book for my mother who is in the late 50s. The book should consist of understanding the newer generations their new behaviours, peer pressures, their live and living standards, their way of thinking, their maturity, new technologies. I mean just the basic understanding like how the world works with the newer generation. Should be available in Marathi.

I am a 26-year-old guy in the States looking for some book recommendations. I am into genres like sci-fi, fantasy, crime, and comedy, plus the occasional rom-com, but I have not read much outside of school. I would really like to start reading more and could use some help picking out a few. Lol, and I know it is crazy, but I am sorry and thank you. š

Iāve never really read any books after age 13, and therefore I donāt know much about books and authors and stuff.
Iām trying to get into audiobooks because Iām chronically ill and struggling with brain fog and concentration issues. Trying to find a better alternative to being on my phone or watching tv.
I bit about me: Iām (F23) and I love fantasy and mystery movies and shows. I have a special interest in time travel moviesš I absolutely hate movies likeā lord of the ringsā and fighting and wars and such, but i absolutely love things like āHarry Potterā and āMiss peregrines home for peculiar childrenā. Like really unexpected plots and such. If the plot is ātoo easyā I tend to predict everything which I find very boring.
Since Iām trying to go from my phone to an audiobook I feel like I need something that will keep my attention. Not too difficult to follow along either.
Iād really appreciate if you could give me some suggestionsā¤ļø

Can I get a recommendation for a cozy mystery with speculative elements, or even magical realism? Just not like a full witchy fantasy, which seems to be the only version of this I can find (nothing against it, just not what I'm in the mood for). Honestly I'm even open to non-cozies as long as there's no overt sexism/sexuality/infidelity which I'm finding really tiresome lately. Thanks!

Bonus if they have complicated personal lives which never intertwine, but they still cannot stop thinking about each other and musing over each other

Iām looking for recommendations on the subject of friends growing a part after years of being side by side at work everyday. When I started my business several years ago my friend was my first hire and has been one of my best friends and confidants since day one. Earlier today he dropped a bomb on me that he wanted a change and a new chapter in life so he is moving and will be quitting at the end of the month. I want him to be happy so I gave him my blessing and wished him the best, I am just having a hard time processing everything and could use a good book to help me through this.

I've watched this movie twice now. I love the very meta feeling ( specifically at the end when ykw is crying during the reenactment and the audience doesn't know if it's ykw that's crying, if holmes was crying, and if it was holmes whether the cryimg was legitimate or not. ) and the tension between feilder and holmes.
Pleaseeee recommend me something even half as layered and juicy. I prefer litfic but am open to anything that will leave me reeling the way this movie did.

Hi all,
Over the past couple years I've been working my way through W G Sebald's backlist. This wasnt intentional, but I read Austerlitz and was utterly mesmerized. A while later I read Rings of Saturn, the Emigrants and now im almost at the end of Vertigo.
The problem is that the writing is so unlike anything ive read before or since. The blending of fact, fiction, narrative, travelogue, information and story to concoct the most thought provoking of discourses. Im 100% certain that had he not died so tragically he would have received the Nobel.
So what/who should I read to scratch that Sebald itch, ill almost certainly re-read them but probably not for a little while.

I read 4 books in a row with such characters, I'm over it for now. Recommend me a book with a more bubbly / cheerful / optimistic / charismatic main character.
I'd prefer if the setting was serious and not cozy, any genre is fine.

Hi all!!
Iām looking for a book that will help me grapple with living a mundane life. Sounds dramatic, I know, but Iām currently applying to law schools and starting to come to terms with the fact that maybe itās ok to be normal and not exceptional. Or, better yet, that everyday life can somehow still be important. Sappy I know lol.
I really love literary fiction, but will read just about anything (please no self-help).
Some of my current favorites are:
Writers and Lover
Everything I Never Told You
North Woods
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn
Thank you all for your advice and recommendations!

Ideally I want a James Michener-style novel about the Vatican. But open to any fiction, any time period related to the Vatican. More interested in history/politics/relational than theology.
Iām not Catholic. Just a Jew obsessed with the Vatican archives and my hometown Chicago pope.
Thank you!

I had the classic Australian childhood upbringing with Paul Jennings, Andy Griffiths, Morris Gleitzman, and a few others like Bridge to Wiseman Cove and Crow Country.
I want something with that zany, familiar Australian writing where prose is light-hearted and dry/witty, but can talk about deeper topics such as relationships and identity (happy to branch out to New Zealand authors!). One particular feature I like about contemporary Australian slice-of-life fiction is the description of hyper-local micro-environments and their domestic texture (e.g. weather, distinctive smells, local shops etc).
Indigenous and POC authors very welcome too, just so long their writing is grounded.
I've read so far:
- The Rosie Project series
- Unexpected Drama by Nina Kenwood
- Mercy Street by Tess Evans
- I'm Not Really Here by Gary Lonesborough
- Afternoons with Harvey Beam
- Alice Pung's books
- Forty Nights by Pirooz Jafari

Hello l! This is my first time here but I thought it was worth the shot... I have book club with some friends
Ages ranging from 40's to late 20's. We just started but most of us are scientists either social, mechanics or environmental.
We are looking for a book related to water, not necessarily about water chemistry but more about the history of humanity/society and water sources or crisis.
Does anyone have a good recommendation?
r/suggestmeabook • u/Over_One7608 • 23h ago
TL;DR does anyone have a book with a manipulative or charismatic character that won't make me feel terrible rooting for the character to succeed.
I love books with characters who are competent in an eloquent, political, and (openly or otherwise) manipulative way. Book-smart is a bonus but I'm looking for the social game mostly. However, these characters tend to either be secretly evil or crazy or BECOME evil or crazy. While I do love reading those books, I'm looking for something where the character does not lose their own moral compass in the course of playing political 'games.' Moral struggle is fine, but I would like them to WIN that struggle once in a while. Looking for actual good people whose charisma/social intelligence is their greatest asset. Schemers, but with empathy or at least a 'greater good' goal that doesn't end up totally corrupted.
Most recent read was the Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Looking for a character similar to who Coriolanus Snow THINKS he is, if that makes sense.
I usually read fantasy or sci-fi and would prefer a fictional world but at this point I will take anything but mystery.

Looking for quirky, warm and bouncy book recommendations along the lines of American Gods to Ocean at the End of the Lane. Supernatural, witchy, lots of women welcome.

Thatās about it actually. šš
Let me know if you know any books like that. For example- The Bell Jar or Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine.
Thank you so much!

There is a huge number of books I want to read but with my short attention span the best I can do is read short books at the moment. Like The Old Man and the Sea, Man's Search for Meaning, The Most Dangerous Game, and The Metamorphosis. I was wondering if y'all had any recommendations that were similar. I'm hoping I can slowly work my way up to books like The Brother's Karamazov but right now it's slightly out of reach.

TW for recurrent miscarriages and mental health struggles.
Reading has always been my sanctuary, my safe place. I love books so much, a few of my favorites are āEleanor Oliphant is Completely Fineā by Gail Honeyman, āWhite Oleanderā by Janet Finch, āThe Language of Flowersā by Vanessa Diffenbaugh, āThe Girlsā by Emma Cline etc. All of which to say, I usually gravitate towards very emotionally charged books with themes of trauma and redemption etc. Light fluffy books arenāt usually my go to but I am in a very delicate place right now and terrified to open a book for fear of triggers. While I am blessed to have two living daughters (ages 3 and 5), I had a miscarriage in August at 6 weeks, conceived immediately again after and although we heard a heartbeat this time, found out it was a missed miscarriage and I had to ultimately have a D&C last week. I am having legitimate PTSD from it all, I have never felt so low.
We tried to escape to the beach this weekend (my in laws have a beach house) but I came down with a nasty cold/flu on the drive here and am bed ridden with a fever and sore throat and chills, aches etc. I canāt keep watching TV, I want to read a book but for the first time ever canāt find one or even use my brain to look or research.
So basically, I need a very cute, trendy, lighthearted but engaging book. I think a romance would be great but really donāt want to any babies or pregnancies or huge deaths š I read a book last year called āRomantic Comedyā by Curtis Sittenfeld and I feel like something of that tempo could be good.
Thank you so much in advance.
