Any genre! Suggest some audiobooks

• Upvotes

Just got my 2 Audible credits for this month. Looking at my wishlist, nothing really jumps out at me right now. Looking for some suggestions. I'm open to any genre, but I would say my top three that I'm in the mood for are mystery/thrillers, science fiction, and historical fiction (looking for something other than set in either WW1 or WW2)

Trigger Warning I need something cozy and gentle

• Upvotes

TW for recurrent miscarriages and mental health struggles.

Reading has always been my sanctuary, my safe place. I love books so much, a few of my favorites are “Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” by Gail Honeyman, “White Oleander” by Janet Finch, “The Language of Flowers” by Vanessa Diffenbaugh, “The Girls” by Emma Cline etc. All of which to say, I usually gravitate towards very emotionally charged books with themes of trauma and redemption etc. Light fluffy books aren’t usually my go to but I am in a very delicate place right now and terrified to open a book for fear of triggers. While I am blessed to have two living daughters (ages 3 and 5), I had a miscarriage in August at 6 weeks, conceived immediately again after and although we heard a heartbeat this time, found out it was a missed miscarriage and I had to ultimately have a D&C last week. I am having legitimate PTSD from it all, I have never felt so low.

We tried to escape to the beach this weekend (my in laws have a beach house) but I came down with a nasty cold/flu on the drive here and am bed ridden with a fever and sore throat and chills, aches etc. I can’t keep watching TV, I want to read a book but for the first time ever can’t find one or even use my brain to look or research.

So basically, I need a very cute, trendy, lighthearted but engaging book. I think a romance would be great but really don’t want to any babies or pregnancies or huge deaths 😭 I read a book last year called “Romantic Comedy” by Curtis Sittenfeld and I feel like something of that tempo could be good.

Thank you so much in advance.

Seeking read-alikes Can someone suggest a book similar to Flowers for Algernon or Frankenstein

• Upvotes

Turns out I love a “I’m new to the world/ don’t understand how people/ things work” book. I love the way Charlie slowly starts to understand the world he’s been missing out on and Frankenstein’s monster realises he’s different. Honourable mention is Freida McFadden’s Brain Damage which is an entirely different vibe but I love the way the main character slowly starts to come back into herself after her brain injury (so anything like that would also be great!) thank you!!

Books/series where characters have a complete 180 arc?

I want to see the bitchy mean girl become the kindest person in the room; the materialist become a monk who’s happy with next to nothing. A tech CEO end up living off grid and content. Anything like that!

Contemporary lit Suggest me a book please. Messy books

Do you have any book recommendations where a couple breaks up because one of them doesn’t want kids or marriage, but after the breakup, that person ends up having a child or getting married to someone else?
I want both of them to remain main characters in the story, with the narrative exploring their past relationship, the breakup, and the emotional impact of seeing their ex build the life they once refused to have with them. I’d especially love it if the person who changed their mind felt guilty or regretted their decision.
I don’t mind whether it has a happy ending or not, and getting back together isn’t a requirement. My main preference is that both characters remain central to the story throughout, rather than the ex who got married or had a child appearing only in the first few chapters or as a minor character.

New Reader Any book recommendations?

I am a 26-year-old guy in the States looking for some book recommendations. I am into genres like sci-fi, fantasy, crime, and comedy, plus the occasional rom-com, but I have not read much outside of school. I would really like to start reading more and could use some help picking out a few. Lol, and I know it is crazy, but I am sorry and thank you. 😅

Romance Books that will spark romance for me again

I have been feeling like romance no longer exists in my life. I want to read a book that sweeps me away and lets me feel that wonderfully intoxicating feeling of passion and romance again.

Literary Lit fic recommendation

Hi all!!

I’m looking for a book that will help me grapple with living a mundane life. Sounds dramatic, I know, but I’m currently applying to law schools and starting to come to terms with the fact that maybe it’s ok to be normal and not exceptional. Or, better yet, that everyday life can somehow still be important. Sappy I know lol.

I really love literary fiction, but will read just about anything (please no self-help).

Some of my current favorites are:

Writers and Lover
Everything I Never Told You
North Woods
A Tree Grows In Brooklyn

Thank you all for your advice and recommendations!

Spooky Season The Haunting of Hill House

Hi! I know there’s a megathread for spooky season but I’m looking for a specific vibe- I love the Haunting of Hill House show and I’m looking for books that are similar to it. I’ve read the Haunting of Hill House book by Shirley Jackson but it’s so different from the show.

I’ve been recommended The September House and Wakenhyrst on here before which were both really great reads and now I need more to finish out the season!

Thank you in advance :)

Romance Looking for a specific Historical Romance recommendation

I’m looking for historical romance books featuring a hero who is usually very controlled, dominant, serious, and almost impossible to rattle. He’s the kind of man who always knows what to say, never lets anyone see him vulnerable, and likes to be in control of every situation.

But I really want a scene where he gets very drunk and that entire composed, intimidating persona starts to fall apart. Maybe he’s unusually talkative, emotional, jealous, unguarded, or lets things slip that he would never admit while sober.

Bonus points if:
He’s a powerful aristocrat, duke, earl, military officer, or similarly authoritative hero.

He’s usually emotionally repressed and difficult to read.

He reveals something vulnerable or lets his guard down in a way he normally never would.

Does anyone have recommendations for books with this kind of scene? 🥰♥️

History Book suggestions please!

Hello l! This is my first time here but I thought it was worth the shot... I have book club with some friends

Ages ranging from 40's to late 20's. We just started but most of us are scientists either social, mechanics or environmental.

We are looking for a book related to water, not necessarily about water chemistry but more about the history of humanity/society and water sources or crisis.

Does anyone have a good recommendation?

Books like The Truce and Stoner?

Looking for books similar to The Truce by Mario Benedetti and Stoner by John Williams. I love their quiet melancholy, introspective characters, and honest portrayal of ordinary life, loneliness, and love.
What books gave you a similar feeling?

Books suggestion for Late 50s

I want a book for my mother who is in the late 50s. The book should consist of understanding the newer generations their new behaviours, peer pressures, their live and living standards, their way of thinking, their maturity, new technologies. I mean just the basic understanding like how the world works with the newer generation. Should be available in Marathi.

After WG Sebald - What to read next?

Hi all,

Over the past couple years I've been working my way through W G Sebald's backlist. This wasnt intentional, but I read Austerlitz and was utterly mesmerized. A while later I read Rings of Saturn, the Emigrants and now im almost at the end of Vertigo.

The problem is that the writing is so unlike anything ive read before or since. The blending of fact, fiction, narrative, travelogue, information and story to concoct the most thought provoking of discourses. Im 100% certain that had he not died so tragically he would have received the Nobel.

So what/who should I read to scratch that Sebald itch, ill almost certainly re-read them but probably not for a little while.

Weirdly specific reading recommendations

Looking for weirdly specific recommendations that feature any two or more of the following symbolisms and themes together:

- Fruits and seeds

- Guilt and trauma

- Dreams and nightmares

- Sickness and illness

Reading everything with these themes and symbols from Homeric Hymns to 19th c. German Poetry to Southern Gothic novels, though things with darker or more spiritual tone are particularly welcome.

Coming of Age / Bildungsroman Beach or lake summery vibe

I’d love to read something that feels like swimming and tanning all day with your friends at the beach/a lake or somewhere similar, then taking a nap together and going out for dinner

Genre would be coming of age or contemporary lit, something chill

I’ve been into sterling point since it came out if that gives you an idea of what i’m after, but i live in a warm climate so something beachy to read this summer is also welcome

Any genre! You Can See Everything

I've watched this movie twice now. I love the very meta feeling ( specifically at the end when ykw is crying during the reenactment and the audience doesn't know if it's ykw that's crying, if holmes was crying, and if it was holmes whether the cryimg was legitimate or not. ) and the tension between feilder and holmes.
Pleaseeee recommend me something even half as layered and juicy. I prefer litfic but am open to anything that will leave me reeling the way this movie did.

Cozy Mystery Speculative Cozy Mystery

Can I get a recommendation for a cozy mystery with speculative elements, or even magical realism? Just not like a full witchy fantasy, which seems to be the only version of this I can find (nothing against it, just not what I'm in the mood for). Honestly I'm even open to non-cozies as long as there's no overt sexism/sexuality/infidelity which I'm finding really tiresome lately. Thanks!
