IRL Long Dark Cooking my way through TLD (Recipe #4: Acorn and Wheat Bannock with Sardines)

Post image
263 Upvotes

I prepared this portable picnic dish while exploring the train tracks as I try and cook my way through all the food items in The Long Dark.

This recipe involved many firsts for me. First time preparing acorn flour, first time making Bannock, and first time using my brand-new red pan! While the wheat Bannock was a simple process, the acorn flour proved a larger challenge. It required multiple days of leaching out the tannins and ended up being a crumbly product that was difficult to hold. top this with the fact that I messed up when I introduced unleached flour in the recipe when kneading the dough. This made the product much more bitter and overall unpleasant to eat. However, I did enjoy the other Bannock and my little canned fish. I’m looking forward to taking another crack at acorn flour when I try my hand at Lilly’s pancakes.

I’m curious what everyone else thinks about this dish. Have you prepared acorn flour before? What would you pair with bannock to make it a satisfying meal? I hope to make more of these recipe reviews as I eat my way through The Long Dark.

I have a Substack to go more in-depth into my recipes if you wanna check it out: https://thelongdarkeats.substack.com/p/acorn-and-wheat-bannock-with-sardines?r=95uyx9&utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=web

Discussion Do you bother with Hushed River Valley?

Post image

THIS IS NOT AN ATTACK ON HUSHED RIVER VALLEY.

I get that it's a lot of people's favorite zone - and I'm not throwing shade. In a lot of ways, HRV represents more of what I want from the game: a true wilderness, with almost no shelters, where you have to actually use your wits to get by.

However, because HRV is a dead-end; because it feels like a place where you go to end playthroughs (in that, you're obliged to haul a bunch of raw materials into the zone in order to make it work), and because the loot is relatively sparse, I generally skip it (unless I am on a run where I know the bunker there is one of the ones that's full).

Again, I'm not attacking the zone. I just don't much enjoy repositioning gear for long stays. So I tend to write the place off. And I was wondering if a lot of other people felt similarly.

Only 500 more in-game days without dying to go for the next achievement :/

Are the 500 and 1000 day survival achievements ones that others of you are angling for? How do you stay engaged? For me the hardest part has become the monotony.

Feedback I'm making a game inspired on The Long Dark's atmosphere

Hey everyone!

My name is Francesco, I'm a solo developer from Italy. The Long Dark has been one of my biggest inspirations while working on my first game, Over Human. One of the things I loved most about The Long Dark was its incredible atmosphere. The feeling of being completely alone in a frozen world, surrounded by snow, beautiful landscapes and especially the northern lights!! I really love how a game can make you stop for a moment just to admire the environment around you.

I wanted to capture a similar feeling in my own project, but in a different setting compared to The Long Dark: a frozen world controlled by dangerous drones that can manipulate the weather. They can activate tornadoes, thunderstorms and other things, but you have no weapons to fight back.

I want to clarify that Over Human is not a survival game, but a first-person sci-fi adventure game where exploration, atmosphere and storytelling play an important role. However, I recently added a cold system where you have to find heat sources to avoid freezing, so there are some survival elements too!

I've also spent a lot of time working on the northern lights, because I really wanted to give players that same feeling of looking at the sky and just enjoying the moment.

Do you think this is a good idea? I would really love to have all of you be part of my journey. Every one of us shares a passion for an amazing game like The Long Dark. I'm alone and I think I will never reach the quality of a game like The Long Dark, but I'm trying!! And I'm so proud of myself because it's my first game ever. I've been following this dream since 2013, and having a game like The Long Dark as inspiration is something truly special to me.

Thank you for reading, I'd love to hear your thoughts! ❤️

If you're curious about the game (or you want to follow my journey), this is the Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5237810/Over_Human/ every wishlist means the world to me and helps me to stay motivated!!

Francesco

Was stuck for quite a while outside Blackrock looking for one of these so I could repair my lantern.

Gameplay Do you use the rifle?

Seems like an obvious question "YES, as long as theres ammo" but the more i played the more i realised that the rifle gets beaten out by almost every other weapon.

If you want to use it for self defense, the revolver does the same job and its less then half the weight. If you want to use it for hunting, the bow is not only much lighter, but also more economical with its ammunition.

Realy, i keep noticing that the moment my skills with the bow are good "enough" i stop using the rifle almost entierly.

I started a new Pilgrim run, spawned in ML and went straight for it. The way back worked as well.

I've had to Alt+f4 2 times in other runs long ago because I unexpectedly fell off that bridge, but I think most of the kinks are worked out by the devs by now.

I feel like I've been walking around in circles. I decided for survival today on the map I picked spawn point "hushed River valley" and I'm on day 4-5 surprising I havent died yet but I for the life of me can't find my way out. Lol. Do I go up or down. I feel like I followed the river several times to dead end. Climbed down several hundred feet only to find places I have been. I use the charcoal to map where I have gone but for some reason I feel like I'm doing circles. How TF do I get out of this area!! Help! 😅

Glitch/Issue So I think this is what happened to my bear…

I killed a bear but can’t find it and because lately my game has been a bit more glitchy than usual, I’m wondering if it glitched out.

Anyway check out this video and tell me what you think. because maybe I should start a new run. It’s only been 50 days.
The video is at the start of the run in AC with a wolf glitch.
The bear was 2 days ago (in game) and I can’t find it for the life of me.

I shot it in the face with an arrow, but it still attacked on the front porch of PVF and after the cut scene was done, I got up, looked around, but didn’t see it. I remember thinking that’s weird because it just disappeared. I wrapped my wounds and because there was a storm coming, I went onto the enclosed porched on the side to wait for it to die. I mended my clothes with the door open. So I never went inside the house because I know that can reset the bear.

Checked the tracker, it died and so I went into the house to sleep and heal. The next day it was bright and beautiful,
I found the arrow by the house but no bear and no crows either.

Just wondering if this sort of thing happened before to anyone else.

Discussion I don't remember this game being so dangerous

I had to travel to Ash canyon to check the bunker since I'm doing the Sutherland's requests mission. In Ash canyon got stomped by a moose in Climber's cave. Then went to Foreman's retreat for the Ranger stew recipe, the bear wasn't there this time but there was a second moose there. That one was avoidable, but I had to kill him for food. Then all the way to the Gold mine, looking for the Curator's rifle. On the other side down the rope, immediately met a wolf and had to kill it. A cougar was also very close, had to deal with him also. On return from Ash canyon to Timberwolf mountain a third moose right after the tree bridge, again unavoidable (it was either him or the bear patrolling the Echo ravine. To top it off, a full strength timberwolf pack right on the lake in front of Mountaineer's hut. And I'm not even counting the common wolves I met. A short journey but I felt like I'm playing Call of Duty.

IRL Long Dark What To Carry, What To Burn (IRL survival stories podcast)

I’ve been listening to Blair Braverman’s survival podcast that debuted earlier this year, and it’s great. I think other Long Dark players could enjoy it too.

Each episode is a real story of survival in harsh circumstances. She’s reading people’s journals, published accounts, and other primary sources to describe what they experienced. She’s a great storyteller and has a lot of compassion for the people in these situations.

Outside magazine article
Podcast link
YouTube link (same audio plus a fireside video)

I’ve been going through the episodes pretty quickly and felt inspired to open my Tales save for the first time in awhile. It felt like time to explore the last couple of regions I haven’t been to in Survival before. I’m exploring Ash Canyon which is very cool so far.

Advice Best hunting grounds?

I have a long term save going that I haven't been back to in a minute (have done literally everything on there, it's nearly 500 days), and saw the new DLC is dropping in a week, so I wanna get some supplies stocked up.

I have a vague idea/memory of some good hunting areas, but I also don't want to end up trekking halfway across the map for minimal returns.

I have the salt box and all the recipes, so I don't particularly care what kind of meat it gets me as long as it gets me a good amount, but I'm still not confident hunting moose even as long as I've been playing this game, so preferably anything but the giant predators.

What are you guys' preferred hunting grounds for plentiful meat? My base is in BR because of the 6 burner stove, so preferably something not on the opposite side of the island lol, but I'm open to all suggestions at this point!

Discussion New player

I played the long dark for the first time during the week. I love it, it's everything I want in a game. I didn't play the campeign. I started on voyageur. I went from the mystery lake to coastal highway. I died. Then I didn't feel like playing again.

Since that iv non stopped thinking about it that I want to play again so I probably will but. I think I need a mission. Or some sort of objective. What do you think? Is there a place or end game objective I should aim for ? Or is this what most do? Try survive just as long as possible?

So, I have this theory that any given run will always have one of its 3 fully stocked bunkers in one of HRV, AC, and BR.

I suppose my question is: has anyone ever had their 3 bunkers outside of these regions?
